Hey there MMO community, I just wanted to share with you all a bit of my experience with FFXIV recently. For months I had doubted if this game could make me like it even close to as much as I once had enjoyed FFXI or enjoy WoW. I was very concerned about all the things i had been hearing and all the leaked information had made me even more so. When I was lucky enough to get an open beta I was still rather excited I must say...
When I first logged in I was extremely saddened by how awful the mouse control lagged, I immediately though how game breaking and annoying this was and how everyone was right... I recalled a lot of people had mentioned that using a controller had made the game far more enjoyable so I spent the rest of the night trying to find a controller that would work with my system, finally picked up this glowing green thing from my local walmart esk store.
Once I had managed to get my new controller working my opinion of the game changed entirely, it was like I was playing FFXI on Xbox once again, I ran around the city and explored and went outside to go test out how fast the combat was with a controller.. which I must say its extremely fast compared to 11.
Long story short, if you have tried the game out and the mouse lag is killing you...
Pick up a controller, you will be impressed.

I have the dual shock logitech that i've had for like 6 years, works perfectly for the game. If you are a final fantasy player it feels exactly like playing ff 13 or whichever on the play station.
Yes the mouse is beyond terrible, took me about an hour to get used to the controller controls but once I did it made the game a lot more enjoyable.
Sorry but I use a computer and not a game console and I have no desire to use a controller as I see it as a step backwards. I've pre-ordered the game and will give it a shot but if the developers don't feel that keyboard/mouse players are worth the effort of writing appropriate drivers and software for then this game will end up on the shelf.
Oh I wonder if some people that are so much into I have a computer so I use a controlelr relaize that some years ago controlelrs were pretty common on for the computer: I guess I become old.
They said they are working on the mouse controls, everyone who was in closed beta says they're DRASTICALLY improved, so they are working on it but apparently its not as easy as we all think it is to fix.
I understand you don't like using a controller, not everyone does, I was only suggesting if you DO like the idea of using a controller then whoever does should give it a go, because in this game it will be a major benefit to have one at least at this point in its current design.
So ignorant. That is all.

I thought the same thing when the fact is, the controller is the only thing to evolve in the past 20 years. Keyboards a Mice... not so much. That being said i thought the i needed to have a keyboard in order to play correctly and this is just not true. The Controller is by far the better option and will indeed set a new standard on how other games think about incorperating it into future games. It also depends on the game on whether you should use keyboard mouse.
About the mouse Lag, I have been doing some testing. This may not reflect every system but it comes out about the same on all 3 of my PC's
Its related to the FPS your system is putting out for it, and the DPI on your mouse.
As long as you have a mouse thats over 2000dpi (thats pretty standard now for entry level mice that can be used for gaming) and your FPS stay around 50+ you should not get hardly any notitcable lag at all.
Even if you have a 5800 DPI mouse you would still lag if your FPS drops below 50. And if your mouse if below 2000dpi do yourelf a favour and upgrade. Get a DPI switching mouse if you like the way it currently handles in other games and don't want to have to "relearn" he handling.
But saying all that, the game is still very menu driven. I have mapped the keyboard as well as possible. But it just feels natural on a gamepad - sadly so, as I realy don't like consol gaming. If you have played any of the PS2 FF's you will know how controls work almot straight away.
Again But, it was nice being able to step away from my PC and "occasionally" sit on Sofa and play it on 42" TV
I feel like im playing Last Remnant again, but that did keep me going to the end - even with a pad!

I do have a controller but I simply prefer to use keyboard/mouse. That being said the best thing I've done so far is to learn all the keyboard shortcuts and basically never use the mouse. Occasionally I will use it to click on someone in a crowd of people or move my camera around but thats about it. At the moment I have no problem with the controls.
Now I do agree with everyone else they need to add a hardware option on the mouse and improve (greatly) on the UI lag, but neither are big enough problems to keep me from enjoying the game.
(On a side note the UI not saving the action layout for each class is really annoying and has gotten me killed once or twice after I changed jobs and forgot to add all my actions back)
Actually turn off Ambient Occlusion. This will solve the mouse lag.
You don't necessarily need a controller to play. If you played FFXI, then you are already comfortable with using keyboard only control settings. ATM in the beta, they don't have the camera configured to the directional arrow keys, but they've already stated it will be in at launch.
Who needs a mouse anyways?
I was in the last CB and the mouse doesnt seem any different now than then. I hardly use it but when I do its still the same. If I buy this game I will definitely pickup a controller but its making me hesitate as now its a choice of spending $100 instead of 60.
Well I'm sure you can find other things to use that controller with too, p erhaps there are more applications than just FFXIV?
I dunno just tryin to help you rationalize spending more for a controller, you're welcome.
I remember those days. Joysticks, controllers, etc.
Controllers were not always "console-only".
I have no qualms using one, personally, I mean, if they make the game a more enjoyable experience why on earth would you not use one? People seem very stuck up and fickle about the silliest things.
Yes, its a PC game. There is mouse/keyboard support. Is it the greatest in terms of MMOs? No. No it is not. Will it work just fine for you? Yes. Yes it will.
Would you like a better experience? Spend $50 and get a wireless Xbox 360 controller or a PS3 controller. I promise, if you enjoy the game now, you won't regret "converting" to our evil controller-wielding ways.
Hey can I ask a question? How did you get your analog sticks to register in the FFXIV config window for controller.
Okay first off, your signature has me cracking up.
Secondly, when you click that portion of the game pad setup, just move your analog stick up down left right and it should fill those in for you.
And I have a question FOR YOU. How the heck do you take screenshots in game? I tried and got zilch. I want some pics of my Lalafell.
So I connected the XBOX 360 controller. All seems to be working well and is way better than keyboard and mouse. The only issue is I still have to use the keyboard to shoot stuff I am an archer. I have to hit 1 on the keyboard to kill stuff. Seems dumb I should be able to hit something on the controller and not have to switch. Can someone help me out with this?
yeah if you set up the controler using SE's config thing (its under the start menu options before you launch the game) you should be able to set a "confirm" button, I made mine "A". It works for me to make my character activate the first action bar button or really any of them just have to scroll through the menu using my D- Pad.
Thanks, thats how I had it set, but I was using A just to target the enemy I don't think I tried to actually shoot with it. I will try it out when the server comes back online.
Sorry ignorant would be to say that I've never used a controller and never will which is not the case. In this case I know the differences and advantages between the two and the cost of a controller for my system is minimal. I do not like using controller on a PC and I find that it does not work well with my overall use of a computer. If I wanted to play a game on a console and use a game controller then I would do so but it is my desire to use my much more advanced computer and if I feel that a developer's choice poorly restricts my enjoyment of a game then I will not play it. This is not ignorance but actually a very informed and rational decision.
And as I stated I've ordered the game and I will see how it works out and I am not pre-judging it or being negative but I am saying that I have a preference and if they choose not to accommodate it then I will move on.
Let me tell you, nothing has improved about controllers since dualshock 2. It's a masterpiece, save for lack of analogous 3D panning. The speed step pan and scan is something that no controllers have replaced so far, though there was one controller planned to have a mouse ball in place of the right analog stick. It never materialized, and if it had, it would suffer the same lag issues as a regular mouse in this game.
I would love to use a multi button mouse and skip the keyboard, or have a second small controller with the buttons and strafing in my left hand, but you can't replace the feeling of mouselook with anything a controller has to offer. That's just the bottom line.
I love how so many people are offended by the thought of using a console controller on a computer. I for one tried this yesterday on open beta, and LOVED how it made the game. Cannot wait to get my CE.
This is like an oxynmoron kind of thing, using a contoller for a pc ? That is like using a keyboard and mouse for the console. Backwards logic ftw!
pick up a free program like motionjoy and a ps3 controller for 15 bucks and bam, you have a gamepad. I use my ps3 controller on my pc for FFXI and it even works with the dualshock. Nothing like running not realizing you have aggro'd something then your controller starts shaking, you turn around and theres a baddie whackin your ass lol.
I don't see it, a console is a computer, I was using a joystick to play flight sim years and years ago and I didn't think to myself "oh how strange this isn't on a console"
Naw, I'm old, and I guess "ignorant" according to some of the posters here, and I'll never play a game that requires the use of controller. (guess that's why I don't have any consoles around my house, except for the ones my children use)
But that's OK, didn't plan on playing this one anyways, not my style of game.
