It would have been smarter to just release the game on consoles first and then maybe later port to PC when they could find the time to make it play better.
That *would have* been the smart thing to do. I believe Rockstar did that with their GTAx games and I was never dissatisfied with the result. What was the normal delay .... six months? You can do that standing on your head. And from what I recall, a lot of people ended up buying both versions so they could play the console one until the PC version came out. There were few complaints, everyone was satisfied, and Rockstar made a few extra bucks because some who were impatient, bought two copies.
If the PC version simply isn't as polished as the console version, hold back the release until it is or at least have the decency to put out a disclaimer so people know what to expect.
The PC version is more like an extended beta for the PS3.
The PS3 version was pushed back just as the game entered beta on PC, which leads me to believe that they want to make sure the game is as polished as possible for the PS3 release at the expense of the PC players. The game as is right now plays better as a console game than a PC game (which when it comes to being a port, the first system a game is released on is usually the one that it runs better on, UI is designed for, etc. The second system is the one that usually has the poor control schemes and awkward control/UI)
To those saying the UI is different (better, deeper, or what ever buzz they wanna use on it) than the standard 'hotbar mashers', I call BS. The game is still a hotbar masher (or button masher) just a bit slower and less intuitive than others in the genre. It's not new, its just a slightly different, slower, clunkier take on the standard.
The rest of the game (Story, setting, ambiance) are all top notch, as are the graphics (not usually one to really give a damn about graphics, but OMG sunset and the sky over the valley I was in was AWESOME).

Just like in final fantasy 11, i feel 14 is a much more immersive mmo then anything out there right now, i dont know why people find the combat slow, what games are you coming from? You attack as fast as you want as often as you want based on your fatigue...
Every MMO ive ever played low level combat is slow, why? because you have no skills, no items and no variety, the game has a cool combat system with the battle regiments which im guessing 90% of you have never experienced because you arent high enough level and you dont have enough skils.
I like the game, i felt pretty relaxed playing it, and i actually enjoyed not having my entire focus be about leveling to the max level as fast as possible, i was exploring the city, trying out the classes, i didnt even do the quest because i didnt want o ruin it come launch, i still made it to level 12 just mining a ton of ore.
Can some people give me some examples of fast paced combat.?
PS, i played ff11, that game had very slow combat compared to 14, how could you like 11 combat and find 14 combat to be slow?

For the buyer I think the best option would be to buy the console version, I have a feeling it will play much better on that platform. Ports are rarely any good and most times than not the PC version gets the worst end of it.
Exactly. If you were to use a XBox controller for this game, it feels about right. I hate playing with a controller though and with the keyboard and mouse, it seems very laggy and clunky. Controls are way off unlike any other MMORPG. I guess I'll be using this money to buy TERA/GW2.

I think what most people mean by 'slow combat' is the pacing of the attacks. You hit the skill, wait, it goes off. The mob waits a few seconds and then hits you back. You then hit your skill again and wait a few seconds and it hits the mob.
Its not so much the combat being slow as it is the dance. Other games just feel like there is less time wasted between 'turns' if you will. Even old EQ felt faster.
Again I have a feeling the whole response time was slowed down for the console players (where we can just hit 1-0 on the number bar they have to physically select the skill). So combat will feel fine for console players, but a tad on the slow side for keyboard jockeys.

People just seem to be ingoring the dev announcement sabout fixing the mouse controls outright.

Is it a new announcement or the one from about 2 weeks back when they said 'sometime after release'?
Because it took them almost a year after the NA PC launch to do the same thing with FFXI, and from interviews the devs don't sound too worried about letting the issue sit on the back burner for a while.

FFXI was slow placed and i loved it. The beta slow-pace seem like "lag" and it is very annoying. If it remains like this, i'll hold off on getting the game for a few months.
Thats because it is lag. I have yet to see the link indicator be anything but yellow/orange. It makes playing casters nearly impossible as you cast a spell, then have no idea when that spell actually finished and end up having to spam your next ability and get "cannot be performed at this time" over and over. Half of the time you end up getting one or two attacks off in a time span where five or six should have been possible. If they're stress testing, thats fine, but they need to handle that stress before it goes live or this game is going to be a nightmare to actually play between the UI/controls and the lag.
I'm not saying the game isn't more paced out than other games when it is running lag free, it certainly is slower paced, but the jittery walking and crazy hang time after abilities is not normal.
I agree with the OP. This game is sooo slow. EQ1 was slow, but here's the big difference. In EQ1 you hit tab (or click a mob), hit a button and you're in combat. Not only that, if you're melee you're auto-attacking along with the skills you use. In this game, there is just too much work JUST to get into combat. I started with mouse+keyboard, and then ended up going with a controller. The controller was easier, but still... I felt like it was a ton of work to just initiate combat, and once in combat there's no auto-attack. It's just, hit skill 1...repeat until dead. If you have more skills, hit those and repeat till dead.
Combat worked like this with a controller:
1) Find mob for quest
2) Run up to mob and get as close as possible as fast as possible to beat other players to it
3) Press a direciton on the direction pad to initiate targeting
4) Press a direciton on the pad until the mob is targeted (if there are players around it might have to cycle through them as well)
5) Press R1 to initiate active mode
6) IF noone else has beat you to all of the above, hit the skill button to initiate combat
7) Keep hitting the skill button ever 1-2 seconds until the mob is dead
.....
Seriously, how is this comparable to ANY other game out there???
Most games require hitting tab to target nearest mob, then one attack move to pull...bam, you're in combat...
I'm surprised they think this much effort will fly in this age of gaming. FYI, I'm ranting b/c I was REALLY hoping this game would be remotely good enough to help me through this stale period of mmo gaming. However, this is not the case. As bored as I am, this game doesn't even come close to providing entertainment. It is more work than fun...
I'll never understand complaining about something that you didn't pay for. You don't need to make a thread about it. Just stop playing.
However, if you paid for it and are unhappy, blog away.
I'll never understand people who don't understand the internet and opinions...
He's not complaining b/c he bought a bad product. He tested the game, and is sharing his opinion about the game. Whether you believe it or not, a LOT of people read through forums (such as this one) in order to read people's opinions and review of games (whether bought or tested for free).
Complaining and sharing a negative opinion are two different things.
2) Run up to mob and get as close as possible as fast as possible to beat other players to it
As far as I knew, when you are doing a quest, no one else can claim your mobs. Just you and your party.
It is true that you have to be on the quest to claim the mobs; however, it does not mean all mobs for the quest are yours. If i am on the same quest that other people are on (which is a sure thing), I have to compete with those people for the mobs.

The Final Fantasy threads are becoming almost as intertaining as the early Darkfall posts.
I remember holding onto the antenna with one hand and waving the other around in the air like I was doing a really bad 'YMCA' dance routine.
Some say, "Ah, the good old days!" The truth is, I don't miss them so much.

Please remember it's Beta. The good thing is things can change, we just need to hope game developer's listen (take note from Hi-Rez)
