I think there is some issue with the game and SLI. Might want to disable it and see.
The first time I ran the game, sli wasn't working so I tried a fix in a forum. The sli is working now because I run EVGA Precision and it shows what the cards are doing and the fps. If the SLI is actually doing anything it's hardly noticable because I've tried single and dual cards. I have the newest drivers. I'm going to say that it is just nvidia cards because it seems like everyone who has it running nice is on ATI.
The benchmark is completely incorrect as far as I have seen. I received a score of ~1500 yet I can run the game completely fine with near-highest settings.
Objectivity is delivered with a lack of personality made for the mainstream but never used for the mainstream.
Honestly, it runs like total crap on my computer -
Vista
i7 2.6ghz
2x gtx295 - sli enabled
12gb ram
I set everything to the lowest setting and it is playable, but it is honestly choppy at most most time and it really makes the game even less bearable.
I want to like this game but at the moment it is making it very hard because running on these setting really takes away from a major point that the game has to offer.

The biggest thing I did was get ATI Tray Tools (ATT) and went through and disabled some things such as Catalyst A.I., made sure that I had Use Application Settings on everything since I used to have to force things through the control panel. Also made sure that I put Multi-Sample AA on instead of Super-Sample and that seemed to bump my FPS from 15 to 30. The 30 is now my MINIMUM.
Of course you can do this through CCC/ATI Control Panel, but I decided to use ATT that's all.
Mouse lag is pretty much gone.
Currently running lowest settings I can @ 1920x1200 and resolution buffering. I'm going to see what I can do about upping all of the settings at this point.
Not sure what you're all talking about with Alt-Tab not working though. That crap is working on my Windows 7 x64.

Not bothering with the SS as I'm not claiming amazing FPS numbers but here goes.
I'm getting between 20-35 FPS in towns depending on the amount of people around. It does take a few seconds to load everything if I log in at the adventurers guild and a ton of people are there. When out in the world killing I'm getting about 50 sometimes seeing 60. The worst has been about 45 with a fair amount of people around.
Well I found my HSF (CPU Heatsink/fan) was partly broken which led to my PC eventually completely turning off after a few minutes. Replaced the HSF, updated FFXIV, now instead of 7FPS on lowest settings, I get smooth gameplay at high/highest settings 1900x1200.
1GB ATI Mobility 4670 (i think though am pretty sure thats what it is)
had to turn down shadows to low, buffer is set to resolution, textures are both set to high, no AA, ambient occlusion off and whatever the depth option is turned on.. donno what my FPS is though but it is deffinatly at a playable rate
edit: forgot to mention that closed beta run well on my pc which is
The game runs really well on my rig. I run the game on full screen with AA X4 and set my card for balanced instead of maxing quality and the resoloution is set to 1680x1050. I am sure I can pump up the settings higher but the game looks great as is. No need to make my pc work extra hard for no reason at all.
It ran OK, but rather poorly for its visuials and techniques used.

The only time I get lag is if there's like 50 ppl standing around in my screen, but even then it's minimal.

Never argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level, then beat you with experience.
It seems the patch the other day made a big performance difference. Though I think there can still be some more compatibility done which should boost the performance further. The game looks OK, but I know that my computer should handle much better then what it currently does. At least it is looking like they are focusing more on performance issues nearing release.
From what I hear from threads on other forums, open beta FFXIV does not utilize hardware as it should, pointing to it being a quick PS3 port with little optimization between. Whether this will change any upon release, time will tell.
On a Core 2 duo extreme @ 3.0ghz with GTS 250 (stock) , 4 gb ram and windows 7 x64, my cpu usage sat roughly around 80%, gpu usage around 37%.
FFXIV settings:
1280x720 - Windowed
FSAA, Ambient Occlusion, Depth of Field: Off
Buffer Size: Resolution
Shadow detail: Standard
Texture Quality: Standard
Texture Filtering: High
Physics, dust, etc: On
While staring at a city wall inside Ul'dah such that it fills my entire screen, I get 36 fps. While in the adventurer's guild staring at the levequest npc with the usual amount of players around, I get roughly 15 fps, moving around the room causes it to fluctuate to 11 at times.
There's a bit of discrepancy between the descriptions of what is considered to be fine and smooth gameplay. I wholly agree that people are more helpful when they post rough fps numbers, their settings, their rig, and their location to where they are taking the shots
Edit: Turning resolution down to 1024x768 with buffer size at half, and everything at off or minimum, I have a 3-5 fps increase. Gpu load is at 25%.
I have an older machine (2 GB RAM, Geforce 7900GS 512MB, Athlon 64 X2 4200) and run it on 1024x768. I play in Gia-something with textures on high and it looks awesome and is mostly very smooth. Some hicups pretty seldomly when I run through the city. The npc and player chars load a bit late when I leave or enter an instance and the movie cuts take a while to start. Apart from that I'm fine.

Overall things were slow for me even with settings on low. I poked around with the buffer size under Video Settings in the Config tool. When I went to Double, I couldn't play at all (though the screen was very pretty). When I dropped it to Half, as soon as I logged in I was zooming along at perfectly normal speed. The downside was that the edges were somewhat grainy/pixelized. I pushed the buffer to 3/4s and the video was less grainy and still playable. That where I left it. Went through the first few quests, no serious lag or delays (a few stutters in populated areas, of course)
Turning off the Dust and Distance rendering via the in game config (main menu) seemed to help even more.
Most of the time, the game runs at about 60FPS or somewhere around that number. However, in cities, the FPS can drop to about 30-35, which doesn't bother me.
Settings:
resolution: 1920x1080
AA: 8x
Buffer Size: Resolution

Ambient Occlusion: Off
Depth of Field: Off

When I turn of Ambient Occlusion, the FPS drops to about 20. I don't really see the difference with it on or off, so I just keep it off. With Depth of Field, the FPS drops to 40 but I don't like the way the effect looks, so I don't use it.

Overall I'm verry satisfied with how it runs.
I cant seem to get a finger on what makes performance better or worse in this game.
Judging from the specs posted and the resulting framerates, it seems highly inconsistent.
Would one say this is a more CPU bound game or GPU?
Does it favor ATI over Nvidia? It does seem to dislike SLI.
Does it use quad core and hyperthreading?
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.
