DC Universe Online: The Lack of Crafting

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Last week, MMORPG.com writer Bill Murphy had the opportunity to interview DC Universe Online's Chris Cao. One of the more interesting pieces of information to come from that interview was the revelation that crafting as it is traditionally known in most MMOs will not be included in DCOU. Bill has some thoughts about why devs made this decsion and about some of the pros and cons of excluding crafting. See what Bill thinks and then add your thoughts on our forums.

Last year the developers were still aiming to include crafting in their game, perhaps in combination with the mysterious Secret Identity system they’re working on behind closed doors. But as we get closer and closer to launch, it’s come out that crafting as it’s traditionally presented in MMOs won’t be a part of DC Universe Online. The question is… does it need to be?

no crafting no sub or box purchase

    pretty darn simple

there will be comments about the game may be fun anyway but i'll never know - again, simple

No crafting I think will turn out to be fine. I often see commits about being “wow clones” on every new mmo that comes out. Before we all throw in the towel before trying the game let us remember that the DCUO folks are doing their best to think outside the box.  Big high five guys, can’t wait to play the game.

As a long time player of CoH I'm sure I'm in the demographic that SOE would like to attract with DCUO.  This news tells me the game is under-developed.  If they had announced some new way ot doing crafting or some innovative alternative then I would be intrigued.  But this just smacks of shallowness.  Granted crafting drives grinding but it also lends depth.  We take the bad with the good.

I probably won't be buying this but will try it out if a trial is available.  I've already failed to be captivated by CO.

couldn't care less about this news.  Crafting in MMO's is usually a pretty stupid simplistic affair anyways.  And i hate how the game design always has to cater to the crafting community somehow making you forced to buy crafted crap instead of questing or fighting for your stuff.

Kinda glad they are leaving out crafting.

When last did we actually see crafting being fun, useful and integrated with the bigger game ? Like never. Almost every MMO just tacks it on just to say "we have crafting" , but it's usually utter tripe.

So i prefer they make the core game good, if your game is not going to do crafting 110% as in the "full monty" right down to Vendors,Auction Houses and such, don't add it. Most mmos lately i literally groan when i see i need to level some sort of crafting [which is never useful while you level anyway] .

Good! I think crafting ruins adventuring fun.  Requiring an adventurer to depend on a crafter or to craft themselves to advance adventuring is stupid.

DCUO just got a huge bump in my Hype meter

Not too many complaints.  Could it be that the people posting in this forum actually LIKE the game they're following?

    Is it 2012 already?

When was the last time you saw superman or wonder woman collecting bits/resources to make a new gadget or powerboost? Have you ever daydreamed about your favorite comic book doing that?

Didn't think so.  Even if mmorpgs think of it as a sacred cow, it doesn't really fit the genre. Now collecting trophies does fit, just take a peek inside the batcave or fortress of solitude. And guess what, that sounds like what they are doing.

So if you want buffs/upgrades, it looks like you're covered. If you want to become miner 49er, you might want to look at something outside the superhero comic book genre.

Lost my mind, now trying to lose yours...

Or Batman, The Green Arrow, or to take a step outside the DC milieu, Spider-man, Iron Man, Reed Richards, the Tinkerer, Punisher, none of those have EVER been known to, you know, BUILD anything ever.  No crafting turns Iron Man from a brilliant technical genius who designed and built his unique armour, to just some dude who knows how to pilot it.  Batman invented, designed, and built EVERYTHING in his arsenal from scratch.  Take that away and you pretty much have a ninja in a funky costume.

As long as there is enough other things to do in the game and in the end game it's all good.

Hmm make macaroni necklaces for 2 hours or pound Solomon Grundy's face in with a bus? I am truely perplexed what to do!

Honestly half the MMOs i've ever played never keep pace with crafting right and it's impact on player progression is moot unless it's a consumable or some sort of augment.

You spend 2 hours working on making kevlar capes to get to make the reinforced kevlar cape, use it for about an hour and go do a group only for the super reinforced kevlar cape to  drop.

Or the devs finally get off their ass and have some good crafted gear but you didn't keep up with your skill because you wanted to actually enjoy yourself, so now you have to grind for 5 hours to raise your skill up or spend 20,000 credits to do so.

At least games don't generally eat resources like EQ on a fail now, that was always fun when you failed to make something AND didn't get a skill up!

Champions Online had a really pointless craft system, not that it's exclusive to Super hero mmos but it's never going to be priority for this kind of game.

Having played games that depended on crafting and where crafting was crap like WoW, I have to say this might make more business sense. It eliminates a part of the population from playing but then that also means less detractors if the crafting system they had implemented was terrible. Good for them, I won't ever play because I need crafting in my life, but good for them.

Well, it is clear that some superheroes do create their own stuff. But it is also clear that most heroes who actually creates their own gear have little or no powers like Batman. Sure we now of a stretchy guy who crafts stuff (yeah, that a useful power right) and a few others but mostly are gear based heroes people with little power.

I would go so far to say that superhero crafting is more like a power and should be treated as one. To not have it in the game is not great, there are a lot of heroes that uses gear but it isn't a disaster and it is perfect to have as the first expansion.

Not a gamebreaker, Guildwars worked fine with no crafting but it do need other good things to balance things out.

If they are going to wait till it can be done right and add interest and fun to game, them good job:) i am tired of the games that come out that claim to have crafting in it and it is just a joke or even worse, a bother and pain to craft.

Both crafting and housing should be handled as well as the core game. They both can add a huge amount of content and fun to games where they are done right. Cutting and fitting just to add it to the game to say they did is always a bad choice.

No idea what the game will turn out to be like, but i would much rather wait and get a fun and intersting add on down the road rather than just a badly designed filler at launch.

Anyhow, as always, i will check the game out on launch and make my choice then, to give it a try or not.

No crafting huh, well that will pretty much kills long term play for most of us.  Good luck for the few that stay.

I can already hear the death knells of this game.  For those of you who don't enjoy crafting, have fun, expect the population to nosedive a few months after release once many become bored.

  • fansedefansede Member UncommonPosts: 960

Don't forget villans! Lex Luthor, Toy Man, Joker, - how many capers did they create FOR Batman and Superman to overcome?

Crafting could make the game really outpace the other superhero games. The other superhero crafting seemed like pseudo tasks that might as well been from zynga games.

I just don't have faith SoE knows how to make crafting a fun activity, and I would rather not have it if they are going to slap it in for the sake of calling it content.

  • mukinmukin Member UncommonPosts: 80

I enjoy crafting when it adds depth.  Lord of the Rings crafting isn't too bad (afterall, you get to make stuff you can smoke!).  City of Heroes crafting fits nicely with the rest of the game.  But plenty of MMOs have crafting that is nothing short of excrutiating and some of those games would certainly be better off without this painful feature.  So I guess it remains to be seen if this will be a game that would be better off without it.  Only time will tell.

No crafting? THANK god. I hate crafting so much, I always avoiod it like the plauge in every MMO. Xept EQ2. This game peaks my interest more and more...

Also, I'm sure its something they will add in a future xpansion

If crafting is really important, then it will be added post-launch.  Resource gathering and crafting can be a fun diversion, but the races, collections and detective stuff sounds just dandy to me.  I can play EQ2 or even CoH if I want to craft.

I don't see the value in crafting for a super hero MMO. There are better gameplay mechanics that could take the place of crafting grind.

Its one thing to say that a Batman like character makes his own gadgets but it is another thing all together to have to actually make them.

  • zaylinzaylin Member UncommonPosts: 794

CoH did not have crafting when it came out. So I dont really think its a big deal. and like a few of you already said crafting can turn into grinding and what TemplarX said in his first paragraph was pretty much on the nose too.

Honestly I dont see my Super Hero nitting him self a new cape.

    ^ Bingo.

CoH did crafting, and I will admit. As one who doesn't like crafting, it was unique and I dablled in it a bit. but its deffinetly not something that "needs" to be there at launch.

I will be honest, I didn't take the time to read the article since the reasoning for a lack of crafting seems obvious and many posters have touched on it.

How much does anyone associate crafting with super heroes? Outside of batman I can't think of any that I can even relate any form of crafting to. Crafting doesn't really have a place in a super hero mmo, just like many of the posters above me have said.
