Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore) Now Playing: N/A Worst MMO: FFXIV Favorite MMO: FFXI
On your first point, it may be a weak analogy, but from what i've read the only reason the gamepad arguably makes the experience better is because the game is designed around it, and as a result they havent properly fleshed out the keyboard/mouse side of things to make it as playable as it should be. This is something PC gamers have dealt with for a long time with crappy PC ports of console games. Smart developers realize that this is a sale killer for the PC port and spend the proper amount of time fleshing out the PC side of things to ensure they dont hose their sales on the PC side.
On your second note. I can safely speak for people who are strictly PC gamers. Now, nowhere in that post does it say or imply that i am speaking for all gamers, i only implied im speaking for people who are stricly pc gamers. Now, i am primarily a PC gamer, but i do on occasion play consoles, and will readily admit that a controller is an advantage for certain types of games. Fighting games for example, racing games, platform games. Some guys are unplayyable on a controller, RTS games like starcraft or Age of Empires, for example would be unplayable on a controller. FPS games, though doable, are horrid on a controller. MMORPG's by nature of their complexity and need for social communication are simply better suited to a mouse and keyboard.
On your third point, i as well have used ventrilo and teamspeak, and both are INFINITELY better than the one used in WKC. The other advantage is because PC's are designed not to be proprietary, you have dozens of mic options, so while you get the occasional bad mic, as you said, generally the mic quality is better. Also, the bandwidth of the codecs tends to be higher.
Consoles on the other hand are very limited, you generally can choose from the Sony / MS branded mic, or at best, logitech and madkatz, for other options. Invariably the mics are designed not with sound quality in mind but with cheapness and "cool looks". As for FFXIV rewuiring a gamepad, i only was posting off what i read in here, there were a half dozen posts that said it was required.
Now, reading further i realize the issue is that the mouse/keyboard side of things is so bad that it might as well be required to have a game pad.
You can use only the keybaord and forget the mouse
Anyways, to touch on one last point you made, i think you underestimate the core PC gamer and how important the mouse and keyboard combo is. For the person who is 80% or better a PC gamer, they wouldnt give up their mouse and keyboard for anything.
Im im mostly a PC gamer i rarely touch consol. I dont even have a PS3 or a xbox360, but still i dont care to play with a controller if this is better. I dont limit myself to a keyboard or a mouse these are merely tools, that just doesnt make sense to me. Here an example:
Let say I like painting and i mostly use a brush and oil paint If i follow your logic i will never use pastel because im a brush painter? No sometimes i will use pastel if i want i dont limit myself to only 1 tools.
Anyway i dont mind using a controller in FXIV but that just me.

Sure, but the really toxic ones are a minority and easily ignored. Personally I find the fanbots more irritating and illogically arguing black is white. Ignoring the extremes you have the rational majority. The majority of the rational majority clearly have some (valid) issues with FFXIV, lets all (well all rational) hope they are addressed sooner rather than later. Personally I can't see it much before the PS3 release.
Woah, I feel like I'm in the minority on these FFXIV forums because I *gasp* actually like it. /sigh.
Okay, things need some work, yeah. That patcher is awful. The UI could be a lot better. My personal experience with the software mouse hasn't been too bad overall. A bit frustrating, but the mouse is still quite usable for me. Targeting isn't terrific, but I'm gonna stick around for launch because I love being able to explore a really gorgeous world without having my hand held every step of the way. FFXIV is the first MMO in a while that actually has made me have to figure stuff out for myself. Crafting looks fun, deep, and challenging. Lots of different classes to choose from on the fly. Variety = Mmm. The animations are top notch and yeah I like the /cute factor I more typically find in Asian games than western ones.
As with any MMO, one day I'll stop having fun, will log in and go "meh", and then I know it's time to leave. FFXIV as it stands has some problems with it, for sure, but nothing that's so broken to me that I would run out and cancel my preorder. Some people figured out the game is not for them during the OB. Okay, fine. You can move along now. ;D
i'm pretty hyped about FFXIV. People judging it on Beta content are hilarious and huge rookies. As a 8 year FFXI player i'm PUMPED about FFXIV after getting ti play beta.. beforehand not so much.. I also played FFXI Beta.. I'm well aware of SE development routines and know how they work. It isn't for everyone, but for the people who like this type of game its going to be A LOT of fun over the next 8 or so years.
I was worried they were going to dumb it down with all their, "We're making it for the casual gamer" talk. I'm ok with making it for casual gaming because I'm pretty casual about my play, but I didn't want it dumbed down with ? ! and being lead around by my nose. They've managed to build a great world, which is going to have great crafting and economy once all the kinks are worked out. It will be one of the best PvE games of the decade I think for those willing to get to end game. FFXI still has some of the best end game content of any MMO out there. Not only really good content but A LOT of content.
I remember when the only thing to do in FFXI was kill Serket, Roc, and Simurgh... Thats it.. Level cap was 50.. Of course even most of the americans didn't start playing till after CoP. FFXIV will have 10x's the content of FFXI @ launch..
It's not like the "hype meter" at MMORPG.com means something in reality.
The meter partially works by how many people click on a topic to show how "popular" it is and how "hyped" I believe.
I've been on this site long enough to see how "hype metered" Darkfall was last year, but that was only because people were allowed to log into that forum and keep posting these negative "Order of the Border" threads which was doing nothing but ridiculing the game. It was known that Darkfall wasn't the favorite MMO of certain people back then (not saying who lest this gets.. you know) but there was no way Darkfall was a hyped game. It was just a big pinata back then and got allowed to be trashed daily. Surprisingly, the game survived even all that "hype".
So when someone makes a "This game will FAIL!" post and trolls join, then fans join into a big flamefest. Or when someone makes titles like the OP did, it draws in people.
On the other side of that coin, Warhammer Online. A complete fail of a MMO overall was happily pushed day/night by "hype" for months/months on this site even after the game was released and was not popular with anyone who actually played it after 1 month. But for some reason here at MMORPG, the "hype" lasted long into 8 months after release when numbers in the real world showed people were leaving that game faster than rats left the Titanic.
But to address the hype meter it's almost a badge of honor when a game comes off the radar here based on posters's tatses of bad games.
There are only 4 weeks remaining until the launch of Final Fantasy XIV. Can you believe it? This week shows a steady increase in Pre-Orders with 12,945 for the week. The PC version continues to be on track for a minimum of 200,000 launch for PC in NA only.
Please take into account that these numbers are from America only and do not include ALL pre-orders. Also the figures are taken from VGChartz. They are not to be taken with 100% accuracy as there is a margin of error but will be fairly close to the real deal.
I would guess the reason the hype is down is because most people who are fans of the game's forums here are actually playing the open beta right now and having too much fun to post here.

That's all fine and dandy, except for the fact that GW2 is not like every other clone MMO on this site. I don't give a fuck about that WoW killer crap, but you're either a complete moron that has no knowledge about GW2 at all, or your just trolling when you say that GW2 will not be a success.
It's not another MMO coming from virgin developers, its an MMO coming from people that already have had great success in the MMO business, and the truth is that no other game till now has had as much success under WoW as GW has. No game pleases everyone, but I see an obvious difference in the way ArenaNet approaches it's fanbase and the way other dev's approach their fanbases. ArenaNet are not in it for the money or fame, their game will be F2P, their apps with be free to download, and gamers can always come and go as they please. These are developers that actually care about their game and make this obvious through what they tell players and through how they show it. If you knew anything at all about GW2, you would know it would be the last game on earth to be rushed for release. The devs have kept the game under the lid for ages, and now information is spilling out nonstop. It WILL be released when it's ready.
So you can say what you want, but GW2's mere existence has already rocked this stale MMO pit.
Everyone notice how FF XIV's score here has dramatically dropped since OB? It is disappointing that this game didn't turn out to be what many of us hoped it would be.
Now I need to know, what is the next MMORPG in development to start following and get excited about?
A conversation between my freind and I while playing FFXIV:
Me - Dude, these controls suck
Friend - Yeah man but maybe they will get better after beta
Me - ....Nah, I doubt that, the release is less than 19 days away
Me - What the hell is up with the no auction house thing? why did they think it's a good idea to NOT have an AH??
Friend - Well they have bazzars and a "retainer" system
Me - That's asanine.....
Me - Everything is so spread out, and I have to spend like 10 minutes reading everything and the rest of the time I'm running around to find an npc..... the way the controls are suck.
Me - Aight man I'm logging out, this has failed to hold my attention, this is just nothing like FFXI, infact I'm going back to FFXI and unloading this crap off my PC.
Friend - Aight man I'm gonna do dailies on World of warcraft then, this is kinda boring.
So yeah, many this game just aint for me. FFXI was my first mmorpg and I had high expectations for XIV but it just aint jumping off for me, sorry Square. There will be those who like it though.
OK folks, the hype meter is rated by users who browse to the hype section and give a game a specific score from 0-10. It is NOT based on how many people click on the game's links here. That would be the popularity meter.
People going out of their way to add a low score or lower their vote are those who are trying out the game (which is hardly in beta seeing it is coming out in a couple of weeks) and disappointed.
I just got to try the head start for LOTRO FTP and I had way more fun playing that game than FF XIV. Graphics are dated but at the same time they are more pleasing.

Going back to WoW, sounds like u had to do som work instead of getting it handd to you on a silver platter like in wow and that may contribute to why you dont like it?

So you gave it what, 30 minutes? 2 hours? 4 hours? And decided that going back to what you know was way more fun that trying something new? I can understand that, not everyone has the ability to play something thats new, controls can be confusing, difficult even if its hard to hold your attention long enough to do so. I see you mentioned how bad it was to have to actually spend a whole 10 minutes reading something, and you made it through highschool huh? Thats ok, obviously this game doesn't cater to you or your friend, too complex, too difficult, so not instantly gradifying. Those dailies in WoW you mentioned, not boring at all, at least not the first 638 times you do them huh?
Hahahahaahahahahahaha, OMG sorry, but this post just makes me laugh my ass off. Yuo seriously decided to not play FFXIV with the above conversation? Hahahahahahahahahahaha.
(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)

The open beta revealed one of the more annoying and irritating MMO experiences in my recent memory. This game was made by a bunch of JRPG developers so full of themselves they never bothered to see how MMOs (and gaming in general) have evolved from the 90s.
Then there's the more fundamental problems, like the horrible game camera and sluggish response to the most basic commands. The game is coming in how many days? Coding issues like these should have been fixed MONTHS ago.
My recommendation would be to check out Guild Wars 2. Or if you don't like fantasy there's Warhammer 40K or Star Wars the Old Republic.

Haha, your really funny so I'm guessing your a comedian? Actually I played the OB for three days and a few hours at a time each day and in regards to that high school crack.... I won't even touch on that since it would mean comming down to your level but lets just say I doubt you have completed more degrees (Two) much less collegial hours seeing as though you have time for this . If you got that from my recent post is when I decided not to play then your reasoning skills are pretty shallow, this was actually a brief conversation over loud speaker, not even verbatim. The post was kind of just a way of painting a picture of how uninterested I became after actually trying the game. Not that I'm proving anything to you because your completely not worth the effort but this board is to make comments in regards to the game according to the related topic. However, people like you roam the boards seeking posts to be-little while at the same time not realizing that you are in no way shape or form even relevant to the contex of the topic.
I'm glad you found some amusement out of my post because that was ACTUALLY one of my smaller intents, but next time you decide to take a lashing at someone's post and intellect you may want to start with yourself. People that do what your trying to do has been shown to come from very troubled backgrounds, mentally unstabled etc.
The only reason this game took a dive in hype is because people that played open beta are not getting as good of experience as those of us to played during closed beta. The game when it release will be a lot better. The graphics are pretty incredible and the storyline is great. Just like in ff11 you can level up different classes, which is a whole different part of the game which gives you tons more gameplay hours. People in open beta also think they are playing "all" of the content, this is also untrue. In open beta we are only test 1/3rd the actual content. I would recommend to wait till launch before you judge this game, because open beta really isn't doing it justice.

You've seen the game at lauch already? Then you must work for S-E.
Why did you guys use the exact same crappy system for the downloads. Most people now can download over 1MB/second. It shouldnt take 15 hours before you can play.
Why do you expect people to pay yet only level 15 hours a week, not to mention the last 7 are at 50% normal exp?
Also, the fact your OB servers couldnt support visitors and told them to retry at a different time, you lost at least 15 people I know, excluding me as I was lost at the point right above this one. Why at least? Because their guild has 138 members on the forums, 76 of which are still actively playing WoW, serveral of them are just waiting while playing CoD and TF2.
MAYBE you come from the future too... hows that time machine working out for you?
Can you get me some stats on how well GW2 is working in 2014 compares to FFXIV? If not ill just suppose you're too much of a fanboi to admit this game is terrible.

Well if you were smart you would have downloaded the torrent version which only takes a few seconds. And yea your right I don't know exactly how it is going to do at launch but I am really hoping it does. I was just saying that in closed beta this game was awesome, and in open beta it is almost unplayable. You can dislike the game all you want and think that it may or may not be ready for launch all I am saying that this game has a ton of potential. I am really hoping everything is in working order when this game launches, because then even I will quit and I have been looking forward to this game for some time.
* oh and in 2014 WOW is dead, and GW2 and FF14 are second rate games because Tera reigns supreme.*
I predicted this, this was the same reaction FFXI received, not surprising FFXIV is getting the same criticisms. People that don't understand or follow SE don't really understand how they operate. They work very differently than most companies I've seen, I have no doubt this product will be the product we expect at launch, like FFXI they are not releasing the full game till release... They are indeed hiding 6GB of the 15GB file from us during OB. SE is more concerned about stress testing the servers to maximize the stability than they are about marketing their product in OB, which is fine, I rather have a game where the company worked until release day to maximize performance than a company that just spat everything out during the end of CB and said, "We're done." FFXI from the beginning was always a work in progress, constantly getting updates and expansions, and in the end it probably has the most copious amount of content of any MMO i've played so far, dare I say more than WoW? Of course it is a couple years older than WoW too... The reaction which FFXIV is of no surprise because the game is so different in the way it is run and the way it plays that people are not sure what to think. I have full faith that it would live up to the standard FFXI put for and exceed it, it's just going to take time to grow. From what I saw with FFXI it will probably get a new content patch every month or so, and slowly grow until it is what we would call a complete game. I say by the PS3 release it should be what people were expecting at computer release, so for those who are disheartened now, you may want to wait till March and give it a second shot.
Why hide content when it needs to be tested, doesnt make sence.
If its abouth spoilers, then it shouldnt be a issue, beta testers are to test content and see the spoilers, i dont believe there hiding anything, this will be the game on release.
The content does not need to be tested, the servers, log in system, UI and controlls need to be tested. Thats all

Now for the real world "hype meter":
I would guess the reason the hype is down is because most people who are fans of the game's forums here are actually playing the open beta right now and having too much fun to post here.
"TO MICHAEL!"

Probably because, like every other MMO for the past 5 years, it didn't live up to the expectations of the players.
He who keeps his cool best wins.
Poor you.
I would recommend to wait till launch before you judge this game, because open beta really isn't doing it justice.

...yet you still waste your time here posting almost every day. Must be a masochist... or also a troll?

The content does not need to be tested, the servers, log in system, UI and controlls need to be tested. Thats all
