swg coronet was alive 2 years before that.
but it makes little difference anyway.
authors, developers, directors will all interpret star wars their way.
as a sw fan i enjoy some kind of continuity, together with the improved technology today offers.
i'm not good at spotting things in pics, but someone might have picked up a statue? a building? a street? which people from swg can relate to.
it seems its not the case here though.
Continuity is fine, but I say it isn't worth it if the past bit of continuity is honestly not that well known and they also suck (SWG cities are not really held up as great lore examples) -- no offense intended there. There's nothing good at trying to hold onto the Coronet from SWG, imho, because it was just very poorly done. Like many (myself included) have said...it looks more like a city from Earth than one from Star Wars.
by whom?
coronet was never described before swg.
and considering the age of the game, i find cities like Theed, Mos Eisley and Mos Espa very well done and close to what you see in the movies.
all the rest were invented. coronet, the outposts, dearic, anchorhead, etc. etc.
I've met people who've played SWG. There are many on here who have as well. They talk about how great and awesome it was (and others about how terrible it was). I've read articles on the game. You are the first person who has said the cities were even remotely notable. No offense, but if they were great, even for their time, then there'd have been a lot more people talking about them that I would have come across -- and I see this looking at those screenshots you provided and seeing just how poorly done Coronet was. Well, also there are SWG players in this thread talking about how awful the cities were.
I don't care if they invented some of those cities. I don't care if they invented Coronet's look in those screenshots. You can invent crap, and that Coronet from SWG looks like a pretty good example of that.
i see...
Isn't SWG's coronet 3000+ years older than TOR's lore wise? A lot can change in 3000 years, so comparing the two doesn't make that much sense to me. But I guess it is all we have to go on. I like the set up of TOR myself. There should be a lot to discover for explorers. The dev's have done a very nice job from what we can see. But untill we are actually there, no one has a clue. It will look completely different with max res graphics settings. I guess we will all find out next spring ++++.
Thats exactly what I was thinking when I read this topic, cities change in 3000 years, streets, shops and everything else is subject to change in that amount of time. The fact that there have been so many wars between republic and empire in the span of 3000 years also helps the whole things change route, most of the lore for this time period still isn't really covered that well even with the EU so as far as it goes don't hold out hope that a certain sector of a city will still be there 3000 years ago.
On that note of which I prefer? Swtor though the irony is that Swtor looks more futuristic then swg, when it should be the reverse given technological growth but thats just me.
yea, well it looks like an average everyday city(swg's coronet). I don't expect bioware to take short cuts and dumb down their coronet just because it might look more futurstic or different. Bioware actually did that city some justice, where as before the SOE devs with no real imagination just through together a plain old city with nothing in it , lifeless and dull, and told you that was going to be coronet so enjoy it.
TOR definately did a great job with coronet and making it look more like something you would see in the star wars universe. They should be applauded for that.

you can clearly see the visual update on the prequel movies, but that doesn't mean lucas re-invented tattooine, for example.
with a 3000 years difference there was plenty of things one can change, i agree. but it would have been nice if people could at least recognise some areas (albeit updated in visual graphics) to what coronet is.

I'm so excited about Corellia showing up in SW:TOR... It"s always been a favorite planet for me and I didn't think that SWG did it justice. I really like the colour pallet that was used for Corellia, it feels warm and comfortable.
Plus it would appear that Corellia might be a PVP planet... which sounds awesome.
15 planets and counting... next is Dantooine and Dac?

Here's the way I look at it, this game takes place thousands of years before the times represented in SWG. Does Rome look as it did hundreds of years ago? Does the U.S. ?
Many earthly cities have been built and rebuilt over the centuries, they've been torn down completely in some circumstances such as war. I don't see why that would be any different in the SW universe. Especially considering there is always a war brewing in SW lore.
I have to say i prefer Biowares approach, they have a much stronger Star Wars feel in their architecture as well as their vision.

eh, the colosseum might still be there - intact - or the city walls.
the US is a new nation, so we cannot compare. it would be like comparing a world in the outer rim and we would expect perhaps an outpost in contrast to 0 BBY where you would find a major city.
Corellia is in the core worlds region - pretty centric to have been around in a civilised fasion for many centuries.

Well, there may be a possibility of some landmark being present that we've seen in SWG, however, C-net really didn't have anything that popped out if you ask me. The fountain outside of the star-port is really the only landmark I recall in SWG's c-net.
Maybe Bioware see's SWG's c-net in the manner I do, it had nothing unique or impressive enough to re-use.

Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to hate on SWG here, IMO pre-cu was the best MMO I've played. I still don't think they captured the spirit of Coronet or any city aside from maybe Mos Eisley. Which they really couldn't go wrong with IMO. To much copy and paste in their world designs, nothing felt unique or hand crafted.
C-net, was boring IMO, which is why I only went there to buff, nothing caught my eye in my travels there. It was flat, lifeless, did I mention flat? The transition from grass to street was also a major complaint of mine, it looked artificial. There was nothing that screamed this is a huge important city in their design.
Anyway to each their own right?

I think I'm somewhat skeptical on this one, as the developers said there could be "dozens" of planets.. I just, can't believe that, 15 planets now, 4 of these planets are somewhat small, but 11 planets at least 4 times larger than the starting planets. Add content onto the planets they have now, it just seems, unreal. Dozens meaning, possibly 20 planets? They can't all be as big as the developers say.... ... not with the way they are developing these worlds.....
I know how big the starter planets are, .. multiply that by 4, and then by 11, its unbelievable.
There is a reason for this games development costing 150 mill. People think that TOR's costly part is the voice over project but i believe that it's the world design & virtualization.

BW will have what....say 6 yrs of Dev time on this game when it launches. Normally they spend like a yr up front if making their own game engine, but that wasnt the case here.
Being generous and saying they spent a yr on voice-over video, or a yr and a half....that is still 4.5 to 5 yrs of cranking out content.
I have seen haters compare this game to STO.....it just boggles my mind.
STO had maybe 1.5 to 2 yrs of game development time vs 4.5 to 5 yrs for TOR. Not to mention the size of the Dev team I would have to imagine is a lot bigger at BW.
TOR should be an awesome adventure. Had Koster been in charge, all but 4 months of so would of probably went to economic sim development. Thank God he has nothing to do with this game.
Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.

Yup. Instead you got Julio Torres, Dallas Dickinson and Jake Neri.
Naaah, luck isn't needed, they've a lot of talented, professional people working on SW:TOR, easily 150-200+
With all the content and handcrafted areas that have to be produced, it's good that there're huge teams working on SW:TOR. Looking forward to the other planets being revealed, I hope they can really make the full two dozen at release.

I would have been happy with a decent game that gave you choices in your storyline, now i get one that starting to look not only good story wise but visual wise as well. Heres hoping the gameplay is anywhere decent.
As for the city. war is the basically the opposite of advancement. while tech does advance a city, wars usually break it down. It's possible for a city to lose buildings, people. shops. A few wars and 3k years can do a lot to knock a city down. Even change it completely.
As for companies, i'd say BW does look better but then again you got about what 7 or 8 years of time for advancement (without wars :P ) so i'm not too sure it's even fair to compare pics. Althought to be fair i guess SWG could have upgraded their cities.
Personally myself i like the way ToR is going, which is a good thing seeing as i plan to buy it.

While SWG was interesting Coronet seems much more well done in TOR than in SWG.
In TOR it feels more like in the movies. In SWG if someone asked you to guess the planet name you would not answer correctly for sure.
