LoL@20fps. This is truly hilarious xD An average of 20fps means your min is prob 7-10 and your max is 60 looking at the ground. I would be checking into changing some settings if that truly is your average bub.

You can add this picture to your copy and paste arsenal. GOD is a lazy f*** isn't he?
Naw, not lazy. Fiscally responsible. Running the world ain't cheap you know. After all, the cattle on a thousand hills might sound like a lot of capital but it actually doesn't go as far is it used to. Just be glad He doesn't charge us to play His game.
No need to repeat what has already been written. ; )
You can add this picture to your copy and paste arsenal. GOD is a lazy f*** isn't he?
I wanted to do this but was too lazy. That. Is. Awesome. Well done.
Basically, in a game you'll have a lot of pre-rendered assets to use because manually creating unique assets for every hill and dale is neigh impossible.
You guys are clueless. Grasping at straws with toothpicks. If I were to take that picture seriously which is impossible I would still point out that you can plainly see the shapes although SIMILAR, are not EXACT. At a 30 degree angle you are pointing out shadow features and calling it evidence? HAHAHAHA Furthermore that is a panarama of a background view obviously and not FOREGROUND + MIDDLEGROUND. Comon guys seriously! LoL
Your emotional outburst betrays you know you've been foiled.
All that work you did, pointing out what we already knew was there but was masked well enough you'd have to be looking for it to see it, only to come back to pointing out that technically such patterns can be found in nature as well - not as frequently, certainly, but it happens.
The eye can only register around 30 FPS. Movies are shot at around 29.97 FPS or so. The more you know. Yay, randomness.
A common misconception, please read up a bit before you get all arrogant, otherwise it get's ridiculous fast.
FPS have nothing to do with optical perception in RL. Sure you can't "see", meaning distinguish, every frame but you very well can see when they are missing. That's whats called a "Framerate Drop" and that's exactly why framerates matter. At 30 fps your impression of the moving image in a computer game is "smooth", at 60 fps you'll notice a significant boost in overall responsiveness on top of it and a certain "snappiness" of camermovement. Everything above that it negligable. Ask a First-Person Shooter Player or Racing Gamer if they "can't see" more than 30 fps. You'll probably be surprised.
BTW: 35mm-Movies are shot with 24 frames. Yeah, the more you know... .
I didn't go into what affects computer programs and responsiveness. I also don't remember being arrogant though perhaps that was you as you were writing. A common misconception.
And yes, I have played first person shooters and 60 FPS is better than 30 FPS. The game is simply more responsive and it's good to have leeway in case the frame rate drops. If it drops between 60-30 you don't notice nearly as much compared to sitting at 30 and then going lower when stressed. Not surprised.
When theatrical movies are mastered they are most usually playing at 29.97 FPS. It may be 29.93 or something silly, but just below 30 FPS. It's also what televisions run at and.. most other things.. if you'd go to film school you'd be taught to save out your mastered files at ~29.97. Stop being such a jerk.
Objectivity is delivered with a lack of personality made for the mainstream but never used for the mainstream.
So Deivos posts a very well-written, thoughtful post. Congrats on that.
But what makes it more than anecdotal? There's no reference for the information, and no reason to believe that this (if the profile is accurate) 20 y/o is any real authority on the subject. The fact that you like FFXIV and want to agree with it? Nothing against Deivos, but I have to question the information's accuracy.
Sorry, but forget liking or disliking FFXIV. I'm not one to just believe everything I read, and how noone else has questioned it is beyond me.
Furthermore, the repeated myth that the human eye can only see 30FPS has really gotten old. In reality, the answer is far different, and completely depends on the source that you are viewing. With gaming (PC or otherwise) the difference depends on many more factors than just how many frames are displaying on the screen within any given span of time. In online gaming, there are even more things to consider. The results of consistantly playing a game at framerates that are too low include headaches, nausea, and increased stress (if that sounds familiar, see: motion sickness). Furthermore, running a game without Vsync enabled is completely out of the question for folks who are more sensitive due to the tearing/splitting of the images. Just for fun, I enjoyed this article on the subject as well.
Anyway, too much misinformation out there on all of this right now. I just don't care much for the spread of such nonsense.

Ok, I don't know a lot about graphics and terrain and such not being the artsy type but I was under the impression that the maps art was not intended to be a precise, google maps satelite image kind of map but a stylized representation of a hand drawn map. Now in as far is it is not exactly actually hand drawn I can see the grip. But I haven't noticed the terrain in these areas appearing to be exactly the same. So , yeah, I guess they are cutting and pasting some map artwork but are you sure they are doing the same for the actual environment? Because I haven't seen it.

Ok, so you agree with me, contradicting your assumptions from the first post. Okay, so you DO notice differences between 30 and 60 fps. Good, that's all i wanted to get across. Secondly, if you talk about technicalities at least try to be more precise next time, because technically speaking TV has nothing to do with film and digital mastering is again something different. Makes no sense to generalize here but it's derailed enough as is, i guess.
well my new pc runs it maxed settings and get occasional screen tears but usually very high fps.. still looks like crap. some of the textures are okay, but the feel is so bland and generic. scenery is uninspired. Sure a lot use procedurally generated terrain, but they tweak it to not look like cut copy paste same textures over and over again.
and dont even get into the fact that it takes 5 seconds to execute a command. yeah it must be my 11mpbs downstream DSL line.. thats the problem. This game is amateur. No good ideas, class switching is neat, but been done before, and better.
Shadowbane, while not technically great, was the best conceptual MMO. if they had a sony or blizzard budget it would kill wow. but its pvp based so i'm sure the pve carebears would never go near it, and rightly so. they would get their feelings hurt.
I don;t know how people can find this game visual stunning, but to me this game is horrible in most cases because what i see the most (grassland) is horrible. I think FFXII had freaking better ground texture then this game and it was on the PS2
Jeez... If i had ownership of an IP like that and the devil told me: "Well you can do a decent job for 150% investment return or you can cut corners and count on the IP to carry you through with the fan zombies and do 300+% profit and FINALLY retire..." (forgive my pun) Well I'd be severely tempted I must say.
Lol. It is sad but it is the nature of things.
When I think of it, I would pick option B and get meself a new yacht.
I BETA'd FF for all of about 15 muntes before unstalling it for good; and this was after days of downloading (mostly from 3rd parties due to the horrible distrubition solution they had).
I'm going to have to stop you right there. You spent days downloadng a beta only to give up 15 minutes in?
I'm sorry, but anyone who does that is apparently so self-harming instant gratificatory that I take their complaints the game failed to please them as poorly heeded at best.
IF it takes you more than 5 minutes to realize wether something is worth it's weight in salt, you're a crappy tester; giving it an extra 10 minutes is was being generous.
If the creation sucks, the UI sucks, the movement sucks, graphics are sub-par, etc. (stuff you find out in 5 minutes) why should I bother wasting MY time on a product that was ill-thought out.

I can't help but agree. Someone who plays a MMO for merely a 15 minutes has an opinion that doesn't mean much to me, whether it be super enthusiastic or overtly negative. 15 minutes is simply ludicrous.
OK, apparently none of you have ever played a game and knew instantly you didn't like it or there was something seriously lacking/flawed.
Or better yet... you just KEPT playing it hoping it would get better... sorry THAT is ludicrous.
Heh, that's why I resisted signing up on this forum for so many years. All just whining and fightingabout peoples opnions. UGH

first off, i said shadowbane was a great concept, and it is. and i said its not for everyone, but its clear to see creativity within that concept where when implimented in FF 14 would be revolutionary, but its not.
why would you NOT want to do the following Build your own city with your guild. complete with vendors. build your own city for you, i had 2 people and plopped my city right in the middle of the best farming area.

I look at this game, i see generic all over it. With three races, consensual realm based pvp would be logical, and added value, if you dont like it dont play it. and you could tell me the same, and i wont be playing this game. i been playing since UO i know when u look at implimentation it can tell you the future of a game.
I dont even play wow, but i did in beta and it was enough to be released with more content than this game.
and aweesome graphics, like AOC, dont make a game. while these are great, i have ran across the whole island i started on and saw nothing but the same. and the graphics arent even bteter than aion or aoc.

too few quests, my friend said its a game where you grind monsters as a group. and its just not for me cause i've done grinded every mmo since 99, its old news.

Everythin looks good on pen and paper. You have to be realistic when trying a new thin.Of course i would whant every kind of customisation to every aspect of the game, but that would be unrealistic. To many games have tryed that road and failed becouse when adding to much to do all at once it only means trouble in the long road. Maybe for 2020 we will have a game like shadowbane well done . Atm that is imposible.Anyway you look at it.
I look at this game, i see generic all over it. Generic FF setting is appeling to me and many others. I understand completly if you whant a diferent setting , but i love FF setting. Personal taste once again.I wont argue that theres not much to do in beta, but this is as intended. Not becouse is the end product. Let me correct you in 1 thin, there is not 3races, theres plenty more and subclasses of each. There are indeed 3 starting cities/areas, but FFXI already have provend it works great from a PVE perspective.Do some research on ffxi and you see how it works out. The only diference is story line. On ffxi all stories linked together at some point. Nobady knows how exactly will work out on 14 at this point.
About graphics , well i find the cities and characters/enemies stunning , while i find everythin else standar.I played aion quite a bit and this 2 thins i mentioned are nothin alike, but ill agree with you graphics do not make a game, but is a nice add into the mix.

i played the succesor of this game for years , i know the company and they have earned my trust, not only with ffxi but with every single player rpg that i have played up to date. I still consider crono triger to be one of the best games ever.So please dont compare SE to companies like NCSOFT, or whatever new companies didnt keep their promises after launch. I dont whant a perfect game at release, i whant a game that gets better after every patch , and after every update. A game that is constantly evolving .The game will be at release a half baked game , released to soon for my taste , whatever they spoke today means nothin to me , on fact, im actually discouraged becouse they talked about pvp and pvp only abilities. It could be fun, dont get me wrong but every single company who tried to cater to both pve and pvp have failed miserably on both aspects. Never the less it could be a pvp sport just it was in ffxi.
While im defending the game i understand your reasons to dislike it.I wont try to change your opinion becouse you and me are world aparts when it comes to tastes. You showed that perfectly on your first posts when you used the word carebears.
What might be the next best thin to you, it might be the next person worst nightmare.

Hey, no problem Deivos. I wasn't aiming to offend you or even really discredit you. There is actually a good bit of factual information in that post give what I know myself.
That said, it's just a bit of a runaway topic based on information that has little grounding - that's all.
Honestly, I'm just still awed by the fact that FFXI - which ran on the PS2 just fine, as well as PC's 8 years ago - has more varied locations, landmarks, and overall a more beautiful look/feel than I've seen thus far in FFXIV. I mean, a little registry editing to increase the texture sizes and FFXI still looks awesome. Considering that, it's difficult to imagine the necessity of the route they took with XIV from this unprofessional standpoint. The reasons given thus far seem like little more than assumptions and hyperbole in an attempt to defend the game itself, which while many may find fun and entertaining, has issues that shouldn't/can't be ignored. From someone on the outside, it definitely seems like a cheap, lazy route to take, especially when you consider just how effecient terrain generation can be using a simple wireframe mesh with a repeated texture. Claims of system strain are hard to swallow when you figure that both have to be rendered in an almost identical fashion, and that's not to even mention other MMORPG's that run perfectly fine - even on low-end systems - while utilising such a thing.
I mean, that people are both confusing this with the re-use of doo-dads, simple models, and textures is just dumbfounding. That people aren't more shocked at this is also a bit disheartening given the context in which this is used. I'm not saying folks shouldn't play the game if they enjoy it and I'm not saying it would completely kill my own. It's just that it's such a poor method to go with.

what are you smoking, shadowbane was released before SWG. that was just the player crafted cities,
it also had the most complex class system i've ever seen, you could have two of the same class, a ranger, based on dex, and dodges alot and uses agi for wepon dmg, or a strength based ranger that hit harder.
and then 3 runes you could take on top of that each with 3 additional abilities, the mix/matching was extraordinary. maybee i just have high expectations.
for example, light thrust, and heavy thrust, as a lancer so far heavy thrust has no use, why give me an ability until i can actually use it? it just wastes TP.

We should all have much higher expectations. Great games bring great amounts of profit including the profit in the future from having a good name. HL, HL2, EQ, EQ2, WoW, Wolfenstein etc. It doesn't have to be the cutting edge graphically to be a winner but it has to have the performance to make it a cinematic experience and the gameplay to keep your brain involved for more than 3-4 hours. If a game can keep me playing past 10 hours then I classify it as a success. If It makes me want to throw my computer out the window then I classify it as a total loss.
"I'm not cheap I'm incredibly subconsciously financially optimized" "The worst part of censorship is ------------------"
Every game makes design decisions that seem good at the time. Once they are implemented they can be hit or miss. Depending what they are using for their toolset to generate the terrain, I'm guessing they could add minor tweaks to make it less recognizably repetitive.
I think people tend to focus on different aspects playing a game.
I look at the details, the jewelry, the stained glass windows, etc. Those things make me say wow.
Alternatively, you can look around at other players near a camp and notice how similar everyone looks. (which is a problem in most MMOs especially at lower levels)
This game actually provides terrain on the Z axis, and lots of it. Quite a few games you basically play on a plain with bumps here and there.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.

I acept your decision. Is your expectations and yours only. I expect diferent thins from the succesor of ffxi. They have meet my expectations so far, and im fairly certain, they will keep it just making it better and better, just like they did on ffxi.Is not low or high expectations diference . Is just diference aspects of the game.
You for one strongly belive that the game sux becouse they used copy paste development to the extreme.I am aware of that fact but i dont find it as bad as you actually make it to be in my experience while im playing the game.See the diference? we are both right on our own selfish way.
1 thin i noticed from your last post is you put some games in there that while it might keep you entertained for sure for more than 10h stright , after a short time your basicly done with it .This is not what i expect from an mmo.I expect an mmo that i can play it for many years to come. And thats constantly updated with new content , fixes, patches and expansions.A game i can grow atached to on the long run while i develope my character.A game that when i tought i was done im not even half done. This doesnt have to be what everyone whant. But IT IS what I personally whant. And im finding it atm on ffxiv.
Personal advice to anyone who havent tried the beta yet , is to try it for yourself. There can only be 3 outcomes.
1- you dislike it so much you unistall from your pc 5min after.
2- you like it and you get hooked for life.
3- you are on the fence , dislike somethin , like other thins. My best advice WAIT TILL PS3 RELEASE. Thats when the game is going to be like it should had been at release.

LoL@20fps. This is truly hilarious xD An average of 20fps means your min is prob 7-10 and your max is 60 looking at the ground. I would be checking into changing some settings if that truly is your average bub.

All that work you did, pointing out what we already knew was there but was masked well enough you'd have to be looking for it to see it, only to come back to pointing out that technically such patterns can be found in nature as well - not as frequently, certainly, but it happens.

All die, so die well.
I think FFXII had freaking better ground texture then this game and it was on the PS2
to op:
Yeah, right.
Troll on
OK, apparently none of you have ever played a game and knew instantly you didn't like it or there was something seriously lacking/flawed.
Or better yet... you just KEPT playing it hoping it would get better... sorry THAT is ludicrous.
Heh, that's why I resisted signing up on this forum for so many years. All just whining and fightingabout peoples opnions. UGH
Good post.
If you added IMO at the end of every sentence .Who could ever think a lot of people out there didnt share your tastes. Must be magic.
why would you NOT want to do the following
Build your own city with your guild. complete with vendors.
build your own city for you, i had 2 people and plopped my city right in the middle of the best farming area.
Player cropped cities developing commerce and crafting opportunities.
I look at this game, i see generic all over it. With three races, consensual realm based pvp would be logical, and added value, if you dont like it dont play it. and you could tell me the same, and i wont be playing this game. i been playing since UO i know when u look at implimentation it can tell you the future of a game.
I dont even play wow, but i did in beta and it was enough to be released with more content than this game.
and aweesome graphics, like AOC, dont make a game. while these are great, i have ran across the whole island i started on and saw nothing but the same.
and the graphics arent even bteter than aion or aoc.
call a quest a quest, not a leve, thats just stupid.
you say the interface lag wont be there on launch, and if you were in many betas, you'd know devs promise a whole lot and rarely deliver. so take it at face value.
too few quests, my friend said its a game where you grind monsters as a group. and its just not for me cause i've done grinded every mmo since 99, its old news.

Just so you know, I'm not gonna be playing FFXIV. I have zero investment on a personal level with this game. I think it's a perfectly fine game, I just don't see myself playing it in the long run.
And while you have a valid point in saying I'm not an authority on the subject, I do at elast have a degree from LCAD in game art. I used to be heading towards a job in that field and even interned at a game studio to work on level design and asset creation.
Ended up moving back to one of my favorite old hobbies though, so now happily hammering away on hot metal for a living.
If you'd like sources on the topic I can gather some together for you and send them your way.

It's just that it's such a poor method to go with.

that was just the player crafted cities,
it also had the most complex class system i've ever seen, you could have two of the same class, a ranger, based on dex, and dodges alot and uses agi for wepon dmg, or a strength based ranger that hit harder.
and then 3 runes you could take on top of that each with 3 additional abilities, the mix/matching was extraordinary. maybee i just have high expectations.
for example, light thrust, and heavy thrust, as a lancer so far heavy thrust has no use, why give me an ability until i can actually use it? it just wastes TP.
games made 10 years ago didnt have the UI lag this game has
when they compromised and port it to a console, the PC version will suffer. this is evidence. no arguing that.

Thats when the game is going to be like it should had been at release.
meh
Aren't WoW's buildings all cut and paste? I swear some Norrathian Architect made a killing with his designs built all over the world
I also believe they I have seen the same tree/log/bush/ group of boulders more than once! While running around
And those glowing eyes .. those glowing eyes! ... everywhere!
