Gamestop Lied

Laughing-manLaughing-man Member RarePosts: 3,655

Their employees insisted to me they would have a midnight release for this game, instead I get told it will be available tomorrow at 10am when the store opens.

How wonderful, the only reason I even ordered from them at all was the assurance I would be able to get it the night of the release.  So it seems that you can't believe a word they say, I should have went with my gut and ordered online at Amazon.  I'm going in to go get my money and leave them stuck with two copies of 14 that are not spoken for.

You do know that you can't blame *all* Gamestops for that right? I've dealt with Gamestop a lot in the past and they deal with midnight releases funny.

My Gamestop here in town had a Midnight release of FFXIV.

probably didn't have enough pre-orders to validate opening the store for midnight. I'm not trying to insult the game, just giving you the reasoning behind it.

I'm not blaming them all, I'm saying that the gamestop I went to lied to me, which is sorta an informative statement, so now others can check to see if they will be able to get theirs when they were told they would.

That's the exact reason. Gamestop only does Midnight releases if there's enough demand for it. I had a long talk to my Gamestop in town about Cataclysm and asked why they did Midnight releases for some games and not others.

The guy said it's all based on demand.

EDIT: No, you clearly stated in your title thread: "GAMESTOP LIED"

You should've said "My Gamestop Lied", because this implies all Gamestops are liars. Not taking sides here, but you can't say one thing and then claim another in mid-thread just to make yourself seem right =P

Again the point of this thread is that if you preordered and you were told you would be able to get it at midnight, you may have been lied to just to convince you to buy the game.

Especially if its a store front style gaming venue, they would do anything to save their business considering how bad they're doing right now.

Moral of the story is when everyone asked where to pre order from...   The correct answer was Amazon or some online store that ships it on time.

Edit:   Gamestop DID lie, MULTIPLE employees insisted it would be available at midnight.

Thats a lie, unless they changed the deffinition of lie recently.

Edit2: If your only complaint is by my lack of the use of the word "My" then fair enough.   I'm sorry I didn't just say "my" game stop lied, I assume other gamestops lied too, considering there are several threads that are talking about how gamestop won't have enough games to even give to those who preordered, it seems like they do this sorta thing all the time.

This is not my first bad experience with Gamestop, but it will be my last.

you might be cutting your nose off to spite your face.  I'm pretty sure you can still pre-order it from amazon today for a release date delivery of tomorrow, but whos to say what time you'll get that shipment in tomorrow?  Also, theres a chance that you might not be eligible for a release date delivery at this stage.

If you go to the store, speak with them again. Try going at a different time so you dont speak to the same person, they may be able to resolve this for you.

The day before release isnt a good time to start redoing your pre-order options.  Maybe just take it as a lesson learned, go in to the store when they open tomorrow and forget about it.

lol what a great plan, with many players unable to get a copy your going to cancel and let those copies sit and collect dust...for how long? lol

Gamestop is actually a very  BADLY run franchise of game retailers. You wanna know why a LOT of gamestops are "funny" about midnight releases? Quite simply, they don't give their employees overtime, and that means THEIR EMPLOYEES DON'T GET PAID FOR MIDNIGHT RELEASES *unless* that certain midnight release is a VERY large event in their particular area. Then, and only then, MAYBE they'll get paid overtime.

Case and point, my brother used to be an assistant manager at our local Gamestop, and was NEVER allowed overtime. Not only that, but assistant managers have to do a lot of end of the day closing crap that keeps them there OVER their work hours in order to keep things working properly (so they don't get fired). It's not like their doing something wrong at all, but it's just how Gamestop is run....very poorly.

So imagine, a midnight release for employees that not only do NOT get overtime, but are only getting minimum wage. I'd like to see you sign up for that more than one a year.

If they didn't have enough people ordering it to justify a midnight release, do you really think there is enough demand where I live for them to get sold at all?

I doubt it, I don't know anyone else who is interested in this game at all that I know IRL, sure it might be a great game and attract a lot of subs, but not many where I live apparently.

Or is it possible that the was a planned midnight release, demand was low at that Gamestop and the decision to not to have a midnight release was made at the Corp. level. And maybe your overreacting a bit.

Having been a former store manager, I can tell you from personal experince that corperate would change midnight releases all the time. Its all based on demand.

Don't be quite so quick to judge the store employee for this mistake. There are almost no decisions made at the store level and corp is quick to hang their store level employees out to dry since they(store employee) are the one's that have to deal with the pissed off customer.

They could have told the truth?

"We don't know if there will be a midnight release"

I'm sorry I work for a living, I don't have time to sit around and wait for people to do thigns when they feel like it not when they say they will.

I would never treat a customer the way they do, I wouldn't even think about it, its shocking how horrible their customer service is.

Did you ever think that maybe they where told it was an all-store midnight release then changed by corporate?

As others have said it is based on demand. It always has been. If 4 people pre-ordered it then to conserve employee time they probably decided not to do one. I assume you have not worked at a Gamestop, however please allow me to explain something. Most Gamestop employees do not care if you pre-order or not. Most of the time it is beneficial if you pre-order, however it is not that important. Instead of jumping on the hate bandwagon against Gamestop, why not see it from the associates perspective. They probably thought they where going to have a midnight release, until the day of Corporate decided it was not worth the associates time.

Just an FYI real people have to give up some sleep so 4 people can come get their game because they can't wait 10 hours to play the game. Yes because 10 hours is going to set you so far back from the other 8 billion people who already have the game on the other side of the world.

Alternatively you can ask the associate if they know of any that are doing a midnight release and see if they can set you up that way. Maybe a store transfer to get you a copy at a store that is having a midnight nearby. Most people that work at Gamestop...I know this may shock you...are normal gamers like yourself who understand you needing your "fix" and will try to help you. I had worked at 4 different stores scattered with in 100 miles of each other and they all followed the same moral policies. If a store was local they would go out of their way to help you. Try seeing if there is anything they can do before getting angry.

Lastly you don't think Amazon has had it problems as well? This kinda annoyance sucks I agree with you 100%. Life changes....adapt...move on. Remember you can only level 15 hours before you need to change jobs in FF14 anyways. Gamestop was helping you. :)

(FYI I am not saying Gamestop is a wonderful nice company, but most the people that work there are.)

You realize you just described 80% of all retail. Most retailers don't allow overtime. And all retail has a closing "checklist" that must be done every night. And of course they pay their employees for midnight releases, maybe not overtime but if their under 40 hours its not overtime anyawy.  Having been a retail manger for over 10 years, if it takes more than 30-45 mintues to close down a small speciailty retail store, your doing it wrong.

You know, technically, the official street date of the Collector's Edition was always the 22nd... Square-Enix was bringing up the servers 6pm PST on the 21st just so they'd be ready by then.

@Faded: Lol its really not bad. The job was fun minus the customers that complain about retarded things like this forum post. As EZ said decisions aren't made at the store level. You wouldn't know this though, instead of doing research it is easier to complain.

In addition at least in my area the District Manager was quick to remove any manager that maintained an unhappy staff. It would lead to legitimate customer complaints which mind you can be done through their website. Which when you wrote to those people they actually care about you complaining and I duno, try to fix it. However instead most users come here and complain and expect things to change...Right, no it makes sense. Gamestop is going to peruse all websites and find where you all complain and take what you say there seriously. I have seen associates removed due to customer complaints and seen associates change behavior because of them. There is a place where you can do this. Gamestop.com. It is on the bottom of your receipt or you can ask someone in the store to give one to you if you choose to no longer by anything from them.

Lastly talking to the store manager, especially one such as EZ would make sense. They will try to compensate if they can or work to help you. Or you can flame forums. Whichever you think is going to get you a copy of FF14 CE on time....

well, first you need to find out if theyre going to give you your pre-order money back.  They may only offer you in-store credit which I believe is the case.  Then you need to hurry up and go to amazon and see if "release date" delivery is still available.

and for what its worth, I do understand where youre coming from.  But logically sometimes emotions get in the way of what the real objective is, and in this case its playing the game when the servers go live.  Do you "really" want how gamestop treated you to delay this by possibly days instead of just several hours?  Especially considering how queues can be when an MMO first goes live, dont put too much concern into being at the server door the moment it goes live.

Ooh, I thought you were complaining it wasn't available Midnight yesterday night.

It's true, not every game is graced with a midnight launch, it seems the retailers save that for the really, really big blockbusters since it stands to reason they need to make enough profit off the I'll-buy-my-games-at-midnight-audience to offset the additional hours they're paying their employees.

It seems the employees who told you it would, indeed, be available at midnight were mistaken. It just goes to show, it's not a promise until you get it in writing.

I agree with you on that. It could have been handled better. No argument here. If I was you, I would talk to the Store Manager. You would be surprised what they will do to make customers happy. No argument here. :)
