Did that, tried to talk to the manager, he said I'm "SoL" and that he couldn't do anything about it sorry man. He said he could cancel my pre order and thats about the only option he had, that or keep it instated.
When he told me he couldn't even try to figure out why the employees lied to me or even that they would have any action taken to make sure this didn't happen in the future, the guy just didn't care.
Why do you think I posted on the forums? This is a causionary tale, and I see that a lot of you are on the side of lying and cheating your customers... Ironic.
Or is it possible that the was a planned midnight release, demand was low at that Gamestop and the decision to not to have a midnight release was made at the Corp. level. And maybe your overreacting a bit.
Having been a former store manager, I can tell you from personal experince that corperate would change midnight releases all the time. Its all based on demand.
Don't be quite so quick to judge the store employee for this mistake. There are almost no decisions made at the store level and corp is quick to hang their store level employees out to dry since they(store employee) are the one's that have to deal with the pissed off customer.
They could have told the truth?
"We don't know if there will be a midnight release"
I'm sorry I work for a living, I don't have time to sit around and wait for people to do thigns when they feel like it not when they say they will.
I would never treat a customer the way they do, I wouldn't even think about it, its shocking how horrible their customer service is.
Maybe the it was the truth and circumstances changed it? If that makes them liars then...
You commited to buying the game from Gamestop at midnight and the circumstance changed. If you don't buy it, wouldn't that also make you a liar?
Their employees insisted to me they would have a midnight release for this game, instead I get told it will be available tomorrow at 8am when the store opens.
How wonderful, the only reason I even ordered from them at all was the assurance I would be able to get it the night of the release. So it seems that you can't believe a word they say, I should have went with my gut and ordered online at Amazon. I'm going in to go get my money and leave them stuck with two copies of 14 that are not spoken for.
You do know that you can't blame *all* Gamestops for that right? I've dealt with Gamestop a lot in the past and they deal with midnight releases funny.
My Gamestop here in town had a Midnight release of FFXIV.
~Miles "Tails" Prower out! Catch me if you can!
I'm not blaming them all, I'm saying that the gamestop I went to lied to me, which is sorta an informative statement, so now others can check to see if they will be able to get theirs when they were told they would.
you might be cutting your nose off to spite your face. I'm pretty sure you can still pre-order it from amazon today for a release date delivery of tomorrow, but whos to say what time you'll get that shipment in tomorrow? Also, theres a chance that you might not be eligible for a release date delivery at this stage.
If you go to the store, speak with them again. Try going at a different time so you dont speak to the same person, they may be able to resolve this for you.
The day before release isnt a good time to start redoing your pre-order options. Maybe just take it as a lesson learned, go in to the store when they open tomorrow and forget about it.
I'd rather not give them my money after they lied to me.
Wouldn't really mind having to wait if I was told the truth from the get go.
well, first you need to find out if theyre going to give you your pre-order money back. They may only offer you in-store credit which I believe is the case. Then you need to hurry up and go to amazon and see if "release date" delivery is still available.
and for what its worth, I do understand where youre coming from. But logically sometimes emotions get in the way of what the real objective is, and in this case its playing the game when the servers go live. Do you "really" want how gamestop treated you to delay this by possibly days instead of just several hours? Especially considering how queues can be when an MMO first goes live, dont put too much concern into being at the server door the moment it goes live.
If you cancel a pre-order it is your money. They return it to you in how you paid for it. Meaning you traded in 500 games to preorder FF14, you will get store credit. You pay with a credit card, they re-credit your card with a negative charge, you pay with cash you get your money back.
If this isn't the case the ASM or Manager to see what they do. SHOULD be what you paid it in. If not I would make a fuss and punch them in the throat.
You know, technically, the official street date of the Collector's Edition was always the 22nd... Square-Enix was bringing up the servers 6pm PST on the 21st just so they'd be ready by then.
Yes and Midnight tonight is the 22nd.
Ooh, I thought you were complaining it wasn't available Midnight yesterday night.
It's true, not every game is graced with a midnight launch, it seems the retailers save that for the really, really big blockbusters since it stands to reason they need to make enough profit off the I'll-buy-my-games-at-midnight-audience to offset the additional hours they're paying their employees.
It seems the employees who told you it would, indeed, be available at midnight were mistaken. It just goes to show, it's not a promise until you get it in writing.
A lesson learned, again my only beef here is that I was lied to, and they are not even upset with their employees or anything, they handled the whole thing like "whops, your problem not mine."
This isn't how you are suposed to treat customers, its painfully obvious they didn't care.

To be fair, lying isn't lying when it was done by accident, no matter how ticked off you might be you'll miss the opportunity to patch up and play during those initial hours and beat the rush.
Or is it possible that the was a planned midnight release, demand was low at that Gamestop and the decision to not to have a midnight release was made at the Corp. level. And maybe your overreacting a bit.

It seems like the honest thing to do, if I cancel my order I should tell them BEFORE its release right?
Just not showing up and making them eat the cost and then forcing them to refund my money way later would be lying about it. I'm calling them to find out whats up, they never bothered to call me, even though they clearly required my phone number when I pre ordered. Its just plain rude of them to not even bother to inform their customers of changes.
To be fair, lying isn't lying when it was done by accident, no matter how ticked off you might be you'll miss the opportunity to patch up and play during those initial hours and beat the rush.
It became a lie when they didn't call me when things changed.

no, of course not, thats wrong.
Lying is lying.
So we can assume then you filed a customer complaint about them through their website? The website that ALL retailers now-a-days have? A "how did we do" website?
FYI when you file that it goes to corporate and the store. Not who sent it in, but that a bad complaint was filed. Usually makes the DM mad and will head over to visit the store.
And no I am not about lying to customers, the point of what EZ and I have been saying is that it changed probably the day before by corporate.
Gamestop is actually a very BADLY run franchise of game retailers. You wanna know why a LOT of gamestops are "funny" about midnight releases? Quite simply, they don't give their employees overtime, and that means THEIR EMPLOYEES DON'T GET PAID FOR MIDNIGHT RELEASES *unless* that certain midnight release is a VERY large event in their particular area. Then, and only then, MAYBE they'll get paid overtime.
-Faded
Umm do you even know what your talking about? The only time they have Midnight Releases are FOR BIG GAMES... and yes they are paid rofl. My brother just worked a midnight release of REACH. BIG GAME... he'll do the same for the new COD.. BIG GAME. Why waste money on MIDNIGHT RELEASES on employees if their not going to be making a shit load of sales?
I blame 60 Minutes. The customer is NOT always right.
Why aren't we?
So you think we should be treated like a resource not a person?
I treat customers like people, like people I could be friends with perhaps, chit chat with them and respect them, I would go out of my way to make them happy, not act like nothing was wrong and that everything was my fault.
A simple phone call or some respect on the phone when I call in to find out why I'm not getting what I was told I would is too much to ask?

No, a lie is when you're deliberately untruthful. Telling somebody something you didn't realize was untrue is not a lie. Failing to call and correct a falsehood you accidentally told is also not the same as telling a lie, though you should certainly do so at the earliest opportunity to be completely honest.
However, it is particularly forgivable in the event that for some reason you were unable to do this. I think you're giving the GameStop retail workers at your store too little credit if you don't think they had enough on their plate to have forgotten or be unable to do so.
Furthermore, considering you found out before you were waiting around their store at midnight, I would say there should be considered no harm done.

I would have understood the change if the manager had bothered to tell me that I might not even have been mad, however the way I was treated on the phone was like it was not their problem. He didn't even bother to try to sound concerned, he was acting like a surfer... I live in Ohio... we dont' have surfers.
Gahh the whole experience is just frustrating, I really wouldn't be mad if they had simply treated me with an iota of respect or honesty, but I feel like the whole situation was handled poorly and unprofessionally.

I feel your pain. My Gamestop's area manager called me because I complained so bad to a store manager. I'm still livid that I can't get the game until tomorrow when the servers open today. The area manager said non of the stores had a 50 order minimum on the Collector's Edition. He floated the idea to his district manager to have all the Collector's Edition orders in town combined to ONE location so they could do a midnight launch party. Unfortunately, the district manager said no because then one store would be getting volume credit for other store's work, yada yada. So while it sucks, that employee may have expected the launch to happen and then some jackass up the food chain made the employee look like a moron and pissed you off. Don't take it out on the store level employees. They were just doing their job.

Makes a lot of sense, I wish that I had been explained this by the manager of my store, or infact why not have these guidelines be well known so that you tell the customer this when you pre order so they know there might be a posibility of that happening.
Why have all of you told me that the store level employees are uninformed of policy? That seems alarming.
If you look at this rationally, there's actually a good reason a mixup probably occurred.
Most games launch both editions on the same day. Did you check if that gamestop is having a midnight release net-tuesday when the general release normal edition comes out?
If there is, then I'd say you're overreacting a little and trying to make a problem where there really isn't one. The guy may have just not been aware that SE was doing a poorly thought-out (imho) split-release of the box product, and thought that both editions would have the same release date.
When 95% of companies release the CE same day as regular edition, that's just an honest mistake. Most companies that know how to properly handle head-starts also give out the access code ahead of time and just launch the physical box all on the same day.
Get made at SE as much as you are GameStop for trying to be "special for specials sake" and splitting the release, causing the guy to be mistaken and give you the wrong information.
If you had asked a second time for clarity and let the guy know the CE released the week before regular, I'm betting he'd have corrected himself saying there'd be one for the bulk release, but not for just the CE.

My point is that when I ordered the CE, it was because one of their employees had told me that they were having a midnight release for the CE. She had suggested I order it when I was checking out as an up and coming thing, along with a few other games. Essentially it went like "Hey would you like to pre order any games while your buying this controller? Like Halo Reach or Final Fantasy 14, or Fallout New Vegas etc."
When I asked her for more information on it is when she told me of the midnight release for the specific thing she had suggested, the CE of FFXIV.
So again, if they wanted to try to explain things they should have done a lot better job from the get go, I had asked the Manager for around 10 minutes for details asking him why he wasn't having one and he said he had never heard of them having one for it. Which is when I informed him of his employees blunder, and he shrugged it off as either a lie or as unimportant.
