Simple question - should I play this game with a controller instead of keyboard/mouse?
I was thinking about getting this - http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=76273
Thanks!

Yes, definately, and that will do the job.
I got one of those to use just for FF14 and I can't get it to work. It doesn't recognize the right joystick, and sees the left joystick and dpad as the same input. I have the latest drivers, and even tried some 3rd party software and no luck yet. Maybe get the new official controller coming out soon.
I tried for a while playing with a keyboard and mouse but eventually broke down and connected a corded 360 controller and have enjoyed the game much more
I do have a couple issues with the gamepad though. For instance, if you have a buff or debuff at the top of your screen I cant figure out how to get information on it other than putting the mouse curser over it. Like, when you die you get a debuff and I had to use my mouse to find out what effects that debuff had. Is there a way to do that with the gamepad?
Also, selecting NPC's and enemies is quicker using a mouse and just selecting them. Cycling through a group can be a pain with a gamepad.
I would say no. I've been playing a 360 controller and it's such a pain in the behind to target anything since it'll cycle between friendly npc's, hostile npc's, and pc's with little to no discrimination. I looked through the options and can't find an option to set it so that it only cycles between hostile npc's.

I found the game much more enjoyable with a controler with the only downside being that you need your keyboard to chat and if there are a lot of targets in front of you it is easier to target using the mouse. Other than that, the controller feels much more natural.
However, I was not able to get the exact controler to work. I also picked it up from GameStop, installed it with the drivers from the steelseries website on win 7 (64) and simply could not get it to work. The two left hand sticks were sending the same signals and the right stick was sending the same signals as the four buttons next to it. I had to return it.
The 360 controller works perfectly but I didn't go with it because I don't like the how the lefts stick and dpad are switched.
The logitech controller is also a good one. and I was able to use the nyko core though I have heard about some having problems with it.
All die, so die well.
Thanks everyone for your input. I ended up not going with the Steelseries because of the issues multiple people have stated. I went with an AX.1 Afterglow controller made by PDP. I would've purchased a Microsoft brand, but Gamestop didn't have any.
I think MS has stopped selling 360 corded game controllers. I was also told they discontinued selling the PC wireless adapter for the wireless 360 gamepads by themselves.
However, you can purchase a 360 wireless controller with the PC wireless adapter at best buy. I dont think gamestop sells those.
and yes, theyre pricey
Awh that would be why I couldn't find one. If only this damn game would finish patching. Going on about 4 hours. This is ridiculous.
I'd say no
Any and everyone is should be able to adapt to the keyboard with practice, I figure most get frustrated with it early on and waste money on a gamepad. I for one, have 0 problems with the keyboard, and prefer it since I don't have to scroll through attacks during combat.
Try the keyboard for a week or two, if your still having problems then buy a gamepad.
I'm having a lot more fun with a gamepad compared to KB+mouse. Even with the new hardware mouse support I find I have more fun with the gamepad.
Seeing as people are having issues with that specific controller, get a Logitech rumblepad. Mine hooked right up and works perfectly.
Never argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level, then beat you with experience.
Ha, finally figured it out.
If you have a Steelseries 3GC PC game controller, make sure you press the mode button so that the light is red, not green. I got no documentation with mine, and assumed that referred to turbo buttons.
Now that it works, I couldn't be happier. I'll be using a combination of controller and voice commands so I can play on my pc, but sit in my comfy chair. Beats a poke with a soft cushion.
Am I doing something wrong? My PC recognizes my controller, it's completely calibrated, but FFXIV won't do anything with it.
Any suggestions?
did you try to configure it in the FF program?
Where do you configure it within FFXIV?
Has anyone tried a ps3 controller??
Start --> programs --> square --> FFXIV config
Edited to say:
I just spent the last hour trying to get my ps3 controller to work and between drivers, restarts and no success... Pft, I'll just stick with KB/mouse personally. I could go grab the 360 controller, but I've already wasted enough time as it is.
Nice! I didn't know about the configuration program. Now does anyone have any suggestions on a pre-made config that makes sense?
Yes, works fine.

There is a binding for "status effects" in the config menu for that.
Also, you'd be surprised how good you can get at scrolling through things. Selection and stuff is still a bit laggy because everyone is in the same areas and the game was just released. Hopefully sooner than later they will get it working as fast as the UI in FFXI.
Yes, a thousand times Yes, this game seems DESIGNED around controller use... I was getting frustrated at the game and the lack of 'intuitiveness' I was feeling, and gave a plugged in 360 Controler a chance and - Presto!
slick willy!
It then all felt natural, I'm loving it! I highly reccomend it.
oh... and P.S. Macro's really help! Build some, and love life!
zWolf out.
Thank you,
zWolf -out.
I have to agree.
Get a logitech USB Rumble Pad 2. Yes the rumble feature works when you hit stuff, get hit or crit. /thread

For me, using a combination of mouse/keyboard and 360 controller has worked very well. I am a mouse/keyboard player at heart, but have found a mixture to be very effective
I've been using the controller when crafting since that is when I am using the menu system the most.
I use the mouse/keyboard when fighting or interacting with NPCs since I can click/target them with a mouse much faster than tabbing through them with a keyboard or controller.
No game should force you to use something as crappy as a controller. Instant fail !!
I agree. Thankfully you aren't "forced" to use a gamepad. It is an option. In fact, it is not even the default option. You have to turn it on and set up the controller keybinds before it works.
If options scare you, then stick with the games were you don't have any choices.
