In the latest MMORPG.com column examining Arena.Net's Guild Wars 2, Bill Murphy talks about the envelope-expanding nature of the dynamic quest line. Designed to cater to all type of players, from the casual to the hardcore, dynamic events are building on ideas from the past and taking them in new directions. Check out Bill's thoughts about what Arena.Net is doing with dynamic events and see if you agree with his conclusions. As always, let us know your thoughts on our forums.
To that end, they’ve designed their system from the ground up to scale with each person that enters or leaves the designated event area. One person starts it, and it’ll be targeted to just that person. But when more come, and the next stage begins it’ll alter the amount of enemies and the difficulty to match the amount of people there. When we asked the team whether they’d taken into account the effects of people who show up and just go AFK or don’t do any work and just hope to get rewards they assured us that the “Karma” system for rewards takes actual numbers and actions performed into effect. They also assured us that the AFK folk would likely fall in battle before they had any real chance to ruin the fun for you and others.

Who wants to play solo with me?
lol
More repeated information...

This is good to hear .
dynamic event makes me think of what eve is/was trying to do[?]
i also think dynamic event might become a little too messy if there are too many players in one place (for example; quest tells you to kill bandits and 500+ people are in the event in such a small zone, the question is will you be able to kill one before others kill it?)
Anet says that they want everyone to be everyones friend - well that's good untill a certain number of people start gathering in one spot then everyone will hate each other. People will get annoyed and become frustrated if there are too many players in the same spot even if xp and loot is disturbuted evenly. i just hope that guildwar 2 will have many servers instead of just the 3 servers for the WvWvW
also i find article title funny cuz last time i checked solo means "a person who works, acts, or performs alone" but together means "into or in union, proximity, contact, or collision, as two or more things" so i'm not sure if it was suppose to be funny or not?
While it's great that more people are jumping on the GW2 bandwagon (the more that play the more fun it is for everyone) I agree with one of the above posters. It's just more repeated information. It's been almost a month since anything significant was talked about, and we want to know what's going on. I understand all the various cons and PAX events the developers are attending are taking a lot of time up though, so I'm trying not to be too impatient...
...omg just release the goddam Mesmer already pls T_T
"Forums aren't for intelligent discussion; they're for blow-hards with unwavering opinions."
The beauty of this system is that it allows player groups to evolve in a dynamic way , it should work out so that players are happy to follow each other through events and build relationships, something that can't be forced and only happens organically, it's a perfect system for allowing the growth of a community rather than trying to force one.
I agree that it's a long and frustrating wait for some new information, but I'm betting that also kind of shows us the timeline for release. If we are getting new release information monthly (roughly) and with 4 classes left to disclose, add in a 2 month OpenBeta/production/PreorderCampaign and it puts release at March.
Which sucks.
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.
LOL!!! I will...HAHAHA!!!
Slow news day. Come on MMORPG.com it must be at least a day since we have had a 'list' as a feature.
I'm not sure if you grasp what they're trying to say. Basically, the game is non-quest related.... there should be no "kill 500 bandits" as it would be more like "Bandits are attacking! Save our town before they destroy it!" So the number would be arbitrary, and as long as you assist, you'll be okay. (I do think the problem comes with scaling... if there really are 500 people in the area, and a dynamic event starts, will the event turn into a boss tougher than the Lich King to take down? or would about 1000 bandits come running at you? Either way, it sounds tricky...)
Also, people grouping together... is annoying? Splitting rewards and exp... is frustrating? Aren't these the tenents that all MMO's strive for, to encourage grouping and make it fun and rewarding for everyone?
And the last paragraph... yeah... it was meant to be funny.
Either way, I really can't wait, but didn't their timeline say that they will release three novels before they release the game? So far, only 1 novel has been released, with a second with a placeholder on different book sites. B&N.com has the second novel listed as Guild Wars: Edge of Destiny, with a release date of Dec 28th, 2010. If the first book, Ghosts of Ascalon, was released on July 27th, thats 5 months in between book releases, which puts the third book release around May 2011, and then I'd expect the game to come out a few months after that... so..... June/July 2011 release?
They were saying on GW2Guru that the information is going to be a lot slower now that the gaming conventions are over with. They put out a lot of info just for Gamescom and PAX. PC Gamer is coming out with their GW2 info in the December magazine and ANet has in the past given them new information to give out. At anyrate, don't expect a whole lot of new stuff for the rest of the year.
What happens when a group of players wanders into the area, the bigger spawn hits, then they pop out? Could be quite the griefers paradise...
I hope it works, though. I'd like to see the MMO genre move away from the current "random spawn pattern of critters with 'kill me' signs on their back" to things that seem more like events and special encounters.
GW2 seems to be reaching for this ring, and I hope they get it...
ya 3 novel have to come out before ;( my guess GW2 will come out during Summer 2011
~The only opinion that matters is your own.Everything else is just advice,~
So the only worry this leaves is botters zoning in and then not carrying their load, plus it's annoying in the extreme to watch bots auto attack and herky-jerky run.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

They said that the event will scale back down in that case. I think we'll just have to see how it works for live, I'm sure they have thought of that but no system is perfect.
You have to set your auto attack to a skill. While it won't stop a botter, I think it will make it more difficult for them.
Well sure, it would in the next "wave". But if the population in the area doubles, so twice the baddies come out, then half the players leave, giggling into the night, the remaining players still have to dispatch those extra baddies or fail the quest.
I suppose they could set it up to where addl' baddies come forth and engage with unengaged players, and if those players bolt, then the excess baddies go running off into the night, presumably to beat up on some other prey...
Like ya said, we'll just have to see. I just know the griefing "community" to be ambitious lot when it comes to ruining good things...
This sounds pretty cool.
Important facts:
1. Free to Play games are poorly made.
2. Casuals are not all idiots, but idiots call themselves casuals.
3. Great solo and group content are not mutually exclusive, but they suffer when one is shoved into the mold of the other. The same is true of PvP and PvE.
4. Community is more important than you think.
They stated that they will not wait the novels to end

If they can pull this off, it sounds like it could be a nice feature.
pie.
I'd like to think of this as one giant World party that all players belong to. No more fighting over the same mob and no ninja looting.
Playing now: Cities: Skyline / Ori and the Blind Forest / Banished
Nice editorial on the game. The playing Solo Together is on purpose folks. Events are basically soft grouping, you are all working twoards one common goal but you don't actually need to use the party system to do so. You don't have to worry about someone attacking this bandit, you have to worry about someone not attacking them. They won't steal your credit, they won't sap your xp, they will help.
Think, why do people hate grouping? The time involved in putting one together, having your build/gear/class discriminated against, having to work closely with other people.
You don't have to do any of that in an event. You just pop in and play in the event chain until you get bored of it. You are all single entities trying to achieve the same goal, a succcessful event.

Ahh playing solo with others.............sounds like the stealther "Solo" Elite in DAOC, always solo, yet always with 10 other realm mates within pissing range ;p
But really I like the public quest model. It does allow people to meet new people. The reward system I hope is much better than that of Warhammer. The gold bag rush and system for getting said bag was not good in the beginning. I'm really looking forward to GW2.
Vack
FF XIV - the single worse game to cross my hard drive, ever.
It could have the opposite effect as well. There is no grouping to the grouping. You show up solo to an event. Kill what ever shows up. Then collect loot and move on. Never talking to anyone and having no community what so ever. I am not saying it will, but never having to group or talk to anyone and yet be able to complete every dynamic event is a soloers dream. They can play solo and still get the gear.
How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them?
