"With the transmutation system, you’ll be able to acquire new items known as Transmutation Stones through our in-game store that allow you to customize your appearance."
First mention of the cash shop? Or did I get it wrong? Still, it's a cosmetic feature so it's nothing too bad.
Yes. This smells like first mention of cash shop
Well we should have expected it should rear its ugly head sooner or later. The things started to sound little bit too perfect
Alas. Cosmetic changes. I guess its a reasonable thing to be in cash shop. Lets hope it is the only one.
If you have played GW1 then you would know exactly what will be in their store.
Honestly, I think everything sounds kosher. As the mention of buying this transmutation stone doesn't say from us, it just says buy it. Even if it is cash shop, so be it. As many others have said, the GW1 cash shop is fine, also its cosmetic, and well, its not game breaking. I just hope it's from an NPC, as if I want to change my look every 2 weeks, It won't cost me like 15 bucks or some every month or whatever (Cause i'd rather pay a sub or something like that)
It's important to note ArenNet was upfront about this. That was intentional better than finding this out later in release on our own. Atleast discussions can take place now while the game is still in development and more likely beneficial for ArenaNet to take the feedback. One of the CM said we were going to get more details as soon as they are prepared to do so. Also I noticed the blog did not mention anything about the stones only being available at the store. They might be looking into other options to obtain this in-game so they leave this open-ended.
Playing now: Cities: Skyline / Ori and the Blind Forest / Banished
I suppose it was only a matter of time before the first vague references to the cash shop were given. I'm ok with the transmutation stone concept as long as they have a reasonable price (and by reasonable I mean don't get any ideas by looking at Blizzard). It would be nice if they gave a small rare chance for transmutation stones to also drop in-game though. I would much prefer it if the cash shop were used as a fast-track access to content and items rather than exclusive access.
Pefect as far as i'm concerned. I'm sick of monthly subscriptions. I'm sure there will be enough items in the game i won't need to buy anything from a shop. If i didn't earn it in game, why would i want it? That's just me though. If i find the game is awesome, i will certainly buy their expansions in a heartbeat. I would feel like a fool wearing something unearned in game though.
However, one thing I know for certain is that ANet will be giving it a great deal of consideration before making a final decision. Judging from the outcry, which has largely been the most negative I have seen yet for a design decision in GW2, they won't make the decision lightly.
Like Dookz said, the fact Anet took an upfront attitude mentioning this now instead of doing a suprise revelation when GW2 is launched, tells much about their concerns with what their customers think.

Anything cosmetic in a cash shop shouldn't even be debated. Its good way for them to make money and a good way for those of us who care to look good. Just like in the real world, you can pay 400 dollars for useless shoes, or you can pay 4 dollars for a sweater that will keep you warm.
How are people finding it nessesary to complain about cash shops with purely cosmetic items. Come on people, stop and think.
Pretty much my opinion aswell.
Like in GW1, aslong it's purely comestic and not stat boosting CS exclusive like many games have, we'll be fine. We don't need a CS costume to be more powerfull or resourceful in PvP or even PvE... well, maybe an intimidating looking costume could make an opponent flee in terror
But maybe it's me but i'm not concerned with CS content in GW2 like i'd be with other games. For over 6 years i saw Anet's commitment in providing good balanced quality content to players without resorting to the greedyness many other MMO's have by selling "must have" items in order to be competitive . It became the serie's trademark and would disappoint many ppl if they changed their minds... and they know this.
This new system they are designing sounds great but it made my jaw drop. The reason i am stunned is because the whole premise of this game was to drop the INSTANCE feel,if everything about the game and it's nodes/drops are individual it is the EXACT same thing as being instanced.Even for the groups, each player will be treated as if nobody else is there, just like an instance, really odd they would go for the carrot on a stick ,to attract players to loot chasing. This is what Wow does,it keeps players coming back for loot, and even with this instance type setup, all A-net has to do is lower the drop rate % to give it the same feel as ONE chest oepning.
Why this bothers me is because i really want to play a game for the entire game ,i want feel like i am in a real world,i do not want to play or be hooked into a game, just because they tell me i will have better drops rates.Look no further than all the illegal game servers you see runing around the internet, what do they ALL have in common?100x drop rates,50x drop rates ect ect,i don't ever want to feel like i am being bribed,i want to play because i want to play.
BTW,the screenshots look VERY good,i hope the world has a realistic, immersive feel to it.I really hate what Square Enix does by making a world feel like a console game with tons of limitations,so i hope GW2 has some freedom.I have been basically hanging out in EQ2,waiting for soemthing to come along that is intriguing and fun to play,i will jump into any game that can deliver,i hope GW2 can deliver.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

I don't understand your loot comparison to WoW. In WoW you have to run the same dungeons over and over for the off chance of getting what you want to drop. In GW2 something you want will drop everytime you go into a dungeon. Perhaps it's an item you already have, but this is addressed by my next point. In WoW gear has stats, however, based on what we know so far, in GW2 armor really serves no purpose except cosmetic, the stats on it come from added "runes" (runes may not be their word, but I don't feel like reading through the article again you can just go read the last portion of it). Finally, Anet has returned the focus of running a dungeon back onto the dungeons content and off of the loot. In addition, dungeons will also change over time as well. The first time you complete them the storyline will be heavily emphasized, when you return tasks will change based on your previous defeat of the dungeon and there will be fewer story elements in order to make it faster paced. You can read about that in the dungeons article on the same site as this one.
Also if you want non-instanced "resources" to fight over read up on the Mists, it is an essential component.
i am extremely happy about this game. they have thus far taken a great many things i hate about traditional mmorpgs and tossing them all in favor of happy fun stuff. i love being able to choose the color and style of my gear to create a consistent good look for my character. i also love that everybody gets their own loot. i have always hated in raids how a butt-load of people would participate but only a couple of people actually got anything other than a repair bill. this game wont be for everybody but it seems to be made specifically for me. it's like everything i could possibly want in an mmorpg within reasonable technological limits is in this game. and no annoying monthly fee to top it all off. but now i'm curious about what kind of crafting classes this game will have.

I TOTALLY disagree! They made it for ME! :P

Sounds fair to me. ArenaNet need to make money, and they're clearly not out to force players to use the item shop in order to be the best. So far the item shop seems completely geared towards cosmetic changes, and I'll happily spend some cash every now and then on some vanity items.
Sure, no item shop at all would be better, but I'm sure the majority of people would rather not pay a monthly fee, as chances are the average person is going to spend less than $15/month on cosmetic items in the item store.
Especially the matter with the loot is one thing that tells me that GW2 will be "the next big thing", as they say. I care way more for these user friendly decisions that you get your own loot and no fights over loot, or that each dungeon drops something cool and unique and the entire stuff they wrote in their design philosophy posts, rather than the highly abstract debate whether a game is theme parkish or sandboxish.
I find these many "small" ideas about making the gaming itself less a hassle very important, while I really could care less if a game as much or less story, for intance.

can anyone really saw they will not like the look of their armor
Look at that concept art. Its great.
I wont use this stone system if the armor looks even half as good as the art shows it to look.
