ThomasN7ThomasN7 87.18.7.148Member CommonPosts: 6,690

For the past year all we been getting is alot of single player rpgs and it has been awhile since i played a really good multiplayer rpg. So I was wondering if you guys can name the best multiplayer rpg to date because in all honesty, I can't think of one.

I think it will usually come down to Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate (any) and the games of the like.  Yes I know they're old but it just goes to show you that they don't really make them like they used to.

I was playing The Witcher the other day and thought to myself about how nice it would be if I could have a buddy along for the fun...

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

Neverwinter Nights 2 for sure when it comes to the player crafted online servers.  Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 as well as the expansions are the best story of any RPG that I've ever played.  Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn is the best one of the series.  It's a shame that Bioware didn't release a real toolset that allowed players to create online servers.  I'm EA had everything to do with it though.  I can't stand EA.

BG were great single players games but sucked for multiple players.

I had been wondering if somebody would post an actual MMORPG, but so far it has just been a collection of SPRPGs with online co-op play.

Would have to say pre-NGE SWG myself.  Though there are many games that I prefer or preferred over SWG, most of those could fall into that MSORPG category.  So yeah, would have to go with pre-NGE SWG.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

NwN and Diablo 2 were great for multiplayer. NwN had so many modules and so much player-created content.

Diablo 2 - I am surprised there are so few online action RPGs and all of them are crap except Diablo.

I played on persistant servers in NWN. Persistant world, crafting, grouping, quests. That was mmo enough for me.

96 people per good server is not "massive"....

edit:  But it is more than just a co-op, so I take back what I said...

Neverwinter Nights by far.  Dungeon Siege 2 wasn't bad if you like a more arcade action feel.

Nothing seems to come close to the orignal days of Everquest 1 feel.

OP, When you say multiplayer rpg are you speaking of co-op games?

    kinda like Diablo or NWN?

Borderlands is probably the best co-op rpgish experience ive ever had that didnt come form a mmorpg itself.

If you don't consider Borderlands a real rpg i would go with Diablo 2 or NWN.

Of the newer games I'd have to agree about Borderlands. From all of the games it is Neverwinter Nights, no contest.

Well i play Borderlands but that is more of a rps (roleplaying shooter) but jeez, NWN and Diablo 2 is old. I can't believe nobody has made a great an online rpg since the NWN and Diablo days. I think we seriously need a great online rpg again.

My favorite was Phantasy Star Online on Sega Dreamcast...and later the Game Cube (I think, anyway). Diablo 2 comes a close second for me...and I give honorable mention to the first Dungeon Siege. Does PSO count as an online rpg...or is it simply an MMO in most people's estimation? I am not sure how to define the difference.

Actually a MMO is by definition more than 64 players online on the same server. So yes, NWN could be a mmo

Source? I'm not being a dick, or saying NWN can't be considered an MMO (a lot of people seem to classify D2 as an MMO), but 64 people isn't really what I would consider 'massive'.

Everyone makes their own "rules" as to what qualifies a game as an mmo. Just look at crap like Hellgate: London, Global Agenda, APB, and other recent "mmos" that really weren't, they just slapped the moniker on it to charge for subs.

Personally, I don't consider anything with less than 500 people per server minimum to be an mmo.

Izork's definition would make Battlefield and other online FPS's "mmos".
