Its ok but it really depends on your playstyle. Mmorpgs are poor in comparison to other gaming genres (bugs, exploits, missing content e.t.c). The only thing that is saving this genre as a whole is the "awe" of getting to interact with thousands of people. Once that "awe feeling" wears off its pretty much a turn based strategy game with lack luster graphics.
Overall it probably is the best. But there are indivdual things that other games do better, so for you another game may be the best. For example:
1. DAoC better PvP 2. AO has better instances 3. Many other games have player hosuing, WoW does not 4. I personally feel that EQ II has a better charcater development system, and a crafting system thet is much more fleshed out 5. Shot-Online has golf, if you like golf in your MMORPGs it's better 6. SWG has the best space battles 7. CoH has much better character creation
So while WoW is the best overall (imo), depending on what you look for in a game there is very likeley something else out there that would suit you better. If you aren't experienced enough to knwo what you want, WoW would be the perfect game to start with.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
WOW has been the top MMORPG game since its release; its been rated, by actual players I'm presuming, 8.6+
Since November 23, 2004 it has maintained the #1 position here at MMORPG.com but again its all how you look at it, also depends on your computer specs as well.
Personally since EQ2 came out, my MMORPG has diminished a lot since half my guild left in EQ1 which really made me stay with Online games but with EQ1, EQ2, WoW and SWG I found they are still good games for the casual player like I :P
Id say WoW is way ahead of EQ, and its not built on EQ at all. Everquest and WoW gameplay is very different. Actualy, WoW is more like Morrowind, then Everquest IMHO
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

so, no. its not the best mmorpg. the "best" mmorpg in my eyes is coming out much later in the future, where you put on a headset thingy that covers your eyes and you actually play as your character, see as your character, BE your character. THAT will be the best mmorpg, right now, its EQ with their original fomula.
Its because Eve is for a very small circle of people. It has a lot of debth, but at the same time it is too complex, too hard to start and too repetative (grind=boring)
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
I'm sorry you can't describe EVE to people who don't get into it. It is what you want, and if you play it like a grind it will be a grind. You can approach it like any other MMO and it won't seem much different then any other thing on the market, that's called "Playing" EVE. On the other hand, you can approach EVE as if it were a real world, with a constantly changing environment - that's called "Living" EVE (and I'm not referring to the amount of time you spend in the game). It sounds cliche because every MMO claims that its a living, breathing world, but EVE actually does it. When an alliance takes a hit in EVE, it's felt by everyone. You hear about it in the news, on boards, through your friends - in extreme cases you can even see the market change and see as corporations collapse and others rise to fill the void in 0.0 space.
For anyone who has played, they understand - could you imagine if Xetic disbanded and released control of its 0.0 space? Imagine the power void created, the corporation shuffling and PVP situations it would create. Anyways, just my two cents on EVE. What EVE is can't be described unless you've experienced it.
No offense to anyone who doesn't like it, I understand it's not for everyone - definetely a niche game. But for those it is for, it's a very unique experience. Just as I'm sure WoW is that very same experience for someone else with different tastes.
it is the best so far even though i just cancelled my acct. most mmo can't keep me interested for more than a month. i usually get bored of them all quick. WoW kept me interested up to the pt where i couldn't get a group and had to wait in IF for hours just to realize that i wasn't gonna get a group anytime soon. I'm a 60 rogue of course. but the 2+ months to level to 60 was the best time i ever had with any game so overall it is still the best mmo of all time.

Grinding in my opinion is "repetative action to gain something tangible, whether it be EXP, MONEY or skill raise". In Eve, there are the following ways to gain ISK (as far as I know): mining, manufacturing, killing and looting stuff. There are quests in Eve too but they are pathetic and non rewarding (in comparison with time invested per reward). Mining - youd need to be advanced for that, and have a big ship in order to mine a lot of stuff. If you are new player, without big financial support, you are stuck mining lowgrade ore in safe areas. And since I cant afford a big ship, I keep going back and forth the station every 2-4 minutes.
Manufacturing - once again, youd have to have big skills to make something usefull, otherwise you would end up like I did, selling junk for peanuts. Plus you gotta rent manufacturing plant, and buy resources (or mine them, se above).
Killing and looting stuff- thats a bit more fun at first, but its repetative and here lays the biggest grinding part. All mobs are practicaly the same. The only difference with them are gun, there are only a handfull of those. So basicaly every mob is just slightly different from others.
Although in general i did like Eve, it has some realy nice idea. But it has been made in a bad way.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
WoW is probably very close to being one of the best mmorpg's around today. The game has its ups and downs. The ups being the graphics, gameplay, fun quests, raids, lots of servers to play on, gigantic world. The only problem with the game that I have experienced so far is that Blizzard's technical support is horrible. Overall the game is great but I think that Guild Wars will be a way better choice when deciding whether WoW is the best mmo.
I liked WoW better than EQ, but I like EQ2 better than WoW.
There are more quests in EQ, and I can do more of them because they are good XP and rewards. While I liked that I could see the rewards in WoW, it led me to quest-sniping. I would quest for what I needed and grind XP to get to the next area when those were done. Levelling was too fast for me personally. Level 30 in 3 weeks. That's just way too fast for me.
I think the heritage, hallmark, access, and prestige quests scattered throughout EQ2 have given me a more casual levelling approach, while the mysterious quest rewards cause me to do nearly every one of them as opposed to the sniping I did in WoW. Of course not everyone feels this way, but I liked finding odd quests as drops in EQ2 (much more rare in WoW), or inspectable items too. Sort of more bonus for exploration it seems to me.
WoW is certainly more polished as a game, but I can't necessarily say that makes it better. I thought it would, but after my first month of EQ2, I found I liked that game better. Just an opinion, mind you. I do like WoW, but I can only afford to pay for one. If I could afford both, I would play both.
Other things I like more about EQ2 is the guild and status implementation. Recently the first guild to level 30 found that they were able to open up a new lvl 40 armor recipes for their weaponsmiths. But they didn't have any that high, so they all are working together to level him up by making stuff for him to combine for XP. I think that kind of thing is really cool. That aspect got the whole guild working together, and it is that kind of guild/player/economy interaction that I think is the kind of innovative idea that gets spread and perfected in future MMOs.

too complex for 12 year olds, maybe. That's what makes the Eve community one of the best.
WoW and Eve are different types of MMORPG. The 'best' can only be based on your own style of gameplay. In terms of the pure concept then Eve is way better than WoW.
As for grind. Your probably so used to doing it now (in games like WoW) you play all games the same way. You do NOT need to grind in Eve.

How can you say that? This question is certainly an opinion based question. WoW is a great mmorpg, but I'm sure that a lot of other games outdue it. Guild Wars for one. Guild wars is good because the servers are never down because all the updates stream to your computer while you play, compared to wow when the servers are down for 6 hours every tuesday. In wow when a new patch is released, their servers usually always crash. Also Blizzard's customer support is mediocre. Currently I do play WoW, but will be switching to Guild Wars and Lineage II once my game time expires. Man, I still can't see how you can think that wow is the best mmorpg right now.
Well, for my 2 copper: Whether you like it or not, WoW is the current king of the hill. It's going to be for a long time. The game and community has it's flaws, but the game succeeds in one critical area: it has a sense of light-hearted fun. Other games I've tried don't have the sense of humor and appreciation for fun that WoW and Blizzard has. Games are supposed to be fun, and that spirit of fun is what Blizzard has captured so well.
Comparing WoW to some other MMOs are like comparing a Saturday morning cartoon to a session of C-Span. Some people like C-Span, but a lot more are going to choose the cartoon. Even if they don't care for cartoons, it beats boring ol' C-Span.
Right now, are choices are more limited between the cartoon of WoW and C-Spans of other MMOs. There aren't that many well known MMOs out there yet. This is still a relatively new genre. But from coming here, I can see the genre growing. And there are MMOs lining up around the block to get their piece of the action. Once more and more quality MMOs step up that are just as fun as WoW, WoW won't look so big anymore.
Since they released the expansion and level 4 agents they have added deadspace complexes and player owned structures as well as a bunch of new ships, they have introduced 2 new classes of ships in between the previous ones to make the transition to larger ships easier and they have been making other improvements to the game over time.
As far as "grinding for isk goes" in eve it is entirely optional to do so, sure you won't get all the big toys that the large alliances/corps play with, but then again you don't need them.
Seriously if the last time you played the game was before Exodus was released then give it another try, you will find a lot has changed for the better. It sounds like you tried the game ages ago and the opinion that you formed is not accurate with the current state of the game.
As far as WOW being the best MMORPG, hardly, they took a cookie cutter formula and plopped it into the warcraft universe, the devs are clueless and are making the same mistakes every other MMO developer has gone through rather than learning from others mistakes, sure their numbers are strong now but it's mostly based on their passed reputation, which they are ruining at break-neck speed.

I would say that it is among the best, but the "best mmorpg" to me is Everquest II.
I judge based on which I prefer to play. If I had to judge based on a set of categories, maybe WoW would be best. It certainly is a very well made mmorpg. Everquest II surprised the heck out me with its completeness and polish, though. I would have thought that WoW would ship much more polished than EQ2, but that was not the case at all. For this reason, I still am not decided on which I would say is the best. I played them both and love them both, but I would go with Everquest II, I think.
Heres a quick rundown of some categories and how I would rate them:

Roleplaying: EQ2
