I have played the game and tried to blindly like it to support SE, but you gotta call it like you see it and FF14 is just a polished turd. Yea it looks pretty, but it isn't ever any fun and is just so... bland. It comes off as a competetor for EQ1 with pretty graphics. Did SE not get the memo that EQ1 died over 10 yrs ago? SE hasn't made a good game in almost 10 years so I guess them not getting the memo doesn't shock me. I think it may have gotten more forgiving reviews on console only, then again, maybe not. The ps3 alone has an abundance of titles that would be infinitely more fun than this. I'd play Demons souls 1000x over before I set foot in FF14 again. If you enjoy the game, more power to you and I hope they fix things. If not, you are hardly alone and you didn't miss anything but a painfully boring gaming experience that doesn't push the genre forward in anyway but graphically, the genre actually went back 10 yrs with this game. Bioware and Arenanet, look long and hard at this game's epic failure and don't repeat the same poor mistakes that could have easily been avoided.

I don't think you are correct. The story line thus far is better and more involved than any other mmo I have played recently. The targetting admittadly needs some work. The market place needs some work. but other than those issues (which will be fixed) I don't see any major issues.

But it was released on PC, and not only that it is SE's second time in the MMO market, so they have experience making these games, it looks to me like they just simply refuse to do any reasearch on things that have worked in the past. Even FFXI had a market place, so why just not have it in at release in their second game?

the review is crap, lets face reality, he has good points, but at the same time ive never seen such reviewer lack of knowledge towardsa  game in my life as Final fantasy XIV....

It's a real shame, because I really like the game. In fact I haven't liked one this much since I started MMOs. It's a shame no-one seems to share my opinion. Maybe I'm just able to look past faults in the UI and so on. Though accessibility is always appreciated.

Everyone wanted to like FFXIV but SE has put themselves in a position that looks like it will be unwinable. When TOR and GW2 release I doubt many will even look at FFXIV, only ps3 users will which  we all know the pc version is the guinea pig for the cosnole version. Sad really, I never would have thought SE would fail so hard this time.

Well, I'm glad you enjoy it. Really, I am. I would never knock a gamer for enjoying something I don't. I think I am right but that's what opinions are :) The reviews have been spot on for the game and most people think its boring and just isn't any fun. But the bottem line is if you're having fun, Fuck it, keep havin fun. Don't let our opinions deter how you feel about FF14. I hope they can fix alot of problems, but fun isn't something they can patch in. I hope for yours and many gamers like you though, I am wrong and they are capable of turning it around. Best of luck on that man and I hope you continue to enjoy it.

Will that matter though in the end? if it polished by then and successful,  the new PS3 reviews will become the New PC Version review. (minus some UI differences) and a second wind.

Well if you think people would rather play FFXIV over TOR or GW2 then yeah, the reviews would matter but I'm not seeing that happening. I'm sure some would go play it 6 months from now if they fix things right but the majority will be going elsewhere.

Where did you come up with this nonsense? Who knows what will happen when the ps3 release hits? For all we know there are NO mmo players who own a ps3, or conversely every ps3 owner will buy it.

What I'm trying to say is you can't just DECIDE what will happen in the future. If you enjoy the game, keep playing and hope for the best but at least be realistic.

First thing i noticed watching this video review is the screen tearing they were experiencing.  I had the exact same problem with FFXIV.  Only solution i found was to force vsync ON with Ati Tooltray.   Now as far as the review goes, they pretty much nailed it.  At first i enjoyed the game, probably because it was different.  But after 2 weeks i dont see myself subscrbing past the first free month.  However this game will probably worth taking another look in a few months.   For now it's just an excercise of frustration just trying to play this and i dont need more frustration in my life.

I simply can't understand why people are sticking up for the game in its current state. Do you really want to send the message that it's okay to release games like this so long as it has Final Fantasy or any other notable IP in its name?

I played it, I waited five years for it, I tried not to get hyped up but I did. That doesn't change the fact that FFXIV is in terrible shape right now and the gaming media response is a sign of that.

Maybe if the basic elements of the game were explained to the player base...like every other game does...he would have known this...purely his fault for not instintively knowing how a new game works.

Game trailer, Gamespot add to that user reviews everyone is complaining about samething. Unless you believe in mind control i don't know how can you keep defending this game. And i am the one sitting on 6 months worth of crysta and waiting for AH and mail system to be implemented.

Even i am not oblivious of the prbolems and how crap this game is in its current situation. No way in hell i can recommend anyone to spend their hard money on FFXIV. God knows how many professional reviews and more consumer reviews you need to open your eyes.

That is what you these 'omg too many windows' complainers sound like.

I'll fully admit the UI is slow to respond and sluggish though. Luckily thats just the bulk of the character menus and such, i've yet to have any 'lag' problems in combat related to the UI.

I'm hardly a FF fanboy, i've been steadily disppointed more and more since FF3 (or FF6 if you like). But these responses are laughable. Stop weighing the game against 'the best of times' final fantasy, that's ignorant.

And again,I will continue to revel in the fact people will continue to bitch about the game including reviewers while it continues to be successful, and they will still have no idea why because they are not nearly as 'in the know' as they would like to think.

Why do fans of the game constantly make it out to be that if you like this game you are in some way smarter than those that do not? It has nothing to do with intelligence, and everything to do with taste.

I did not like the game, but I'm not a helmet wearing retard. I just found that there was nothing worthwhile for me to do aside from leve's which are just "kill x of y" quests boiled down to their simplest. I've never been a crafter in ANY game, that's just not my cup of tea so this game didn't really offer much for me. How that makes me a retard is beyond me.

It's a rare occasion, when I'll lay out $50 for a game, and regret it within hours of installation, but Final Fantasy XIV definitely meets the criteria.  I had read how poor the game was before I purchased it, but I decided to give it a shot.  "Maybe people are exaggerating," I naively told myself.  Then I installed the game and got to account creation.  It was a mess.  A confusing, tedious mess.  A taste of things to come.

In my opinion, this review, as well as Gamespot's, is spot on.  The only things this game has going for it, are the visuals, which are better than average, and the class flexibility.  And even so, who cares?  Everything else in the game is utter crap.

The visuals are nice, sure, but what's the point when pretty much all of the landscape is copied and pasted.  So they make the "world' huge, but who cares?  It's empty and soulless.  There's nothing interesting anywhere.

Quests.  What a joke.  Why even bother providing them?  You're limited to eight a day, and they're ALL THE SAME.  Run to camp.  Click crystal.  Go run and kill x number of things.  Rinse.  Repeat.  But when you hit your max, you can party up and go....do the exact same quests again...yay.  The story quests are a little more interesting, but not interesting enough to warrant grinding through the rest of the pointless "content" the game provides to get to the next point where you can continue with the story quests.

"Oh but what about the harvesting quests??"  Great.  Run to crystal.  Click on crystal.  Go harvest.  Rinse.  Repeat.  And there's the crafting quests.  Here are materials, try to make them with this "Test Your Luck" mini game.  Deliver them to camp.  OR  go talk to person, and they'll give you materials.  Play the luck minigame.  Give them to person.  Of course, once you burn through your daily allotment of "quests" there's still plenty to do...that is, if your idea of content is killing hundreds of squirrels and bugs.  "Don't worry, there's cooler monsters to fight later!"  Yeah, well who cares?  The game is boring and uninteresting now, why would I want to grind up to higher levels to be bored and uninterested there, too?

I won't even talk about the UI.  I mean, what's the point?  There's only so many ways you can describe something as being terrible, and everyone else has already covered that.

Ditto the "player driven economy".  Lol, market wards.  Good job, SE.

I tried to like this game, I forced myself to play it for a week.  Leveled weaver to 10, conjurer to 10, tried the pugilist, gladiator.  Mixed and matched skills.  Nothing helped.  Combat was completely dull.  Targeting a complete mess, even after making a macro to let me target the nearest npc (which for whatever reason, didn't exist as a basic targeting option?  Tab lets you cycle through everything, well that's great unless there's multiple people standing around"

On the subject of macros, what the hell?  I didn't realize I had to program features into the game for you, SE.  Did you know that the macro shorthand for your offhand is 'sub', not 'off' like it logically should have been?  I didn't, until I looked it up on a website.  That's an ironic feature btw, if you want to learn how to do anything in the game, you need to read about it on an exterior site, but when you alt+tab, the game crashes!  Unless you're playing in windowed mode...which is fucking stupid.

If I had to sum up the game with an analogy, it would be this:

The design of this game is a toilet full of foul smelling feces, and the story is a $1 bill that you can see under the surface.

How badly do you want that dollar?  (Keep in mind that due to the design of the toilet, you can't just reach in quickly to grab the dollar, you're going to have to leave your arm in for a long time)

    /end rant

/flame away, fanboys, nothing you can say will change the fact that the game is terrible

Because it's easier for people with comprehension problems to dismiss other peoples reasons for not liking something by making it sound like they lack the intelligence to think for themselves..

It's their way to disqualify and dismiss your opinions.

It's like when someone states they didn't like a game and someone else asks for a specific reason as to why they don't like it. They want people to give specific reasons so they can pick them apart 1 by 1 to often times invalidate the person.

    basically it's like this:

    Ex-Player: I didn't like crafting

    Player: Why not?

    Ex-player: Just didn't

    Player: Explain, give an example...

Ex-player: It felt boring and the process was tedious

Now this is where they hit...

Player: It's not boring/tedious, you just don't have the patience and/or the ability to adapt to something different. It's not teh games fault, it's yours...

    or...

Player: Sorry its not rofleasy-mode like wow...

    or...

Player: You are just a retard

Sorry, guess I should have prefaced it with almost everyone I hate dislikes the game, but I do not hate everyone who dislikes it heh.

I hate crafting in general as well, which is why i'm not doing any of it. Seems like a popular method is to level up a adventure class then when bored/fatigued go craft. I've opted to simply level up 3 adventure classes, mix them up, and skip crafting. Works great.

I'm not a huge fan of this game, but it's catching 'random WoW hater' levels of shit for having systems that are simply different. they work perfectly, but since they don't work like most other MMO's they seem to get a thumbs down on that alone. I'm more disppointed in the gamer community and their petty complaints about the game than anything else. I imagine I'll drop from this game as well for GW2 or Rift if it doesn't improve quite a bit, but the amount and magnitude of the complaints for such small things is just ridiculous.

Apparently if those games don't have keys mapped to inventory, bags and character sheet and a 30 minute tutorial they are in some serious shit though.

Seriously it would be different if peopel jsut said 'i dislike this main menu system' because frankly so do I. But what I see is "its fucking bullshit i have to navigate through 4 windows and hit like 10 keys just to get to my inventory!" because:

    A. its not even close to true

    B. what kind of lame spaz has this insane exaggeration response to the reality that is having one more key to press?

     Touche'

I believe  you just hit the nail on the head.

I'm not here to bash people who like the game, or try to take any of their enjoyment of it away. I come here to read other people's opinions, and ingest what I see.

Also, anyone else feel that the best combat in FFXIV comes from reading these forums?

I feel you man. I'll not say that this game is "bad" in the general sense, it's definitely in a better state than a lot of releases over the past few years, but it just doesn't mesh with me. I wanted it to, but wanting wasn't enough. I will say that I hated FFXI, but for reasons that have nothing to do with the menu's and ui differences from other mmo's.

I hated FFXI because you literally fought rabbits, cute rabbits no less, for the entire 25 levels I stuck through.Though, I probably didn't give it a fair shake if that was what drove me off haha. Well, that and I could never find a decent group of english speaking players to group with.

Yes. I'm sure these game reviewers couldn't tell 5 minutes after starting to play that it was a chore to control your character. I'm sure, since the game drops you into a major city, that they couldn't tell that there was no centralized buying and selling system. I'm sure after 10 minutes they couldn't tell that the UI lagged so bad that it almost got them killed. When the game is so BRAZENLY flawed, it doesn't take hours or days to figure out it's a bad game. But still, let's assumethey play their mandatory 4 hours they normally spend on the game. That would also allow them to get the leves done....I'm sure they spent their last hour looking for something to do besides grind mobs. When there is nothing left to do past the initial 4 hours, it's pretty easy to issue a review based solely on that 4 hours.

HA thats another thing. shit if you guys don't like FF14 you should go try out FF11. Holy shit you guys would have a gd field day hating on that game. almost every aspect of FF11 is improved upon in FF14 except the market system imo. tons of shit is more needlessly difficult and slower to do. Think crafting on FF11 is more simplified though.

Review wise the biggest mistake FF14 developers made was not to do the typical "first 30 minutes" gameplay polish. Remember when Age of Conan came out? And the first 20 levels were awesome? and the rest blew nuts? and it got good reviews? Again, design wise they did something different, they didn't spend a ridculous disproportional amount of time on the first couple of levels/minutes of game play, spent their time laying groundwork. Reminds me of CoH release actually. repeatative content, bland environment but excellent ground work for better content to be put in later.

that was funny, i have to admit. Although, this isn't a cookie, its a computer game, and there are more than enough buttons on a keyboard to support something that is already in almost every other computer game out there. (not just MMO's)

its one of those needless inconviences that stack on themselves. like when an automated system asks you for your information before connecting you to a live assistant, then the assistant ask you for the same info because its not transfered with the call. repetitive, pointless, and over the course of enough repitition becomes frustrating and not fun, something games should try to sprint away from not towards.

thats the problem people have with it. its pointless, there is no reason for doing it other than the sake of doing it.

For someone who enjoys this game so much, you sure do spend a lot of time on these forums instead of playing the game. What's the matter? Your leves on a 36 hour cooldown?
