At last weekend's New York Comic Con, MMORPG.com hosted a panel featuring several of the top games coming in the near future. One of the games prominently featured was DC Universe Online. In a new article, MMORPG.com writer Drew Wood sheds some light on creating characters in DCUO and the tremendous amount of customization that will be available to players. Check it out!
This past Saturday, the staff over at MMORPG.com hosted a panel for the highly anticipated game, DC Universe Online. With the recent announcement of the delay (pushed back now into early 2011), I was unsure of what to expect from the panel in terms of new information. What we got was a fairly in-depth exploration of DCUO's Character Create system from Chris Cao; Director of Game Development, Mark A. Anderson (or Manderson, as he was referred to); Art Director, and Jim Lee; Executive Creative Director.

check out gametrailers.com, they have 3 new video of dcuo chracters creation and 15min of new duco gameplay walkthrough.
For an article titled "DC Universe Online: Character Creation and More" I was anticipating focus on the actual character creation process, which did not happen here in any notable way. The aforementioned character creation videos on gametrailers.com have actual steps and details, but leave many unanswered questions. At the very least you need to watch those videos, gather a list of questions to elaborate on the character creation process, and then set up an interview with DCUO staff to report on details.
So the whole part about the article being a report on the DCUO panel for New York Comic Con slipped past you? It's odd to expect the author to include information in his report from the panel that wasn't covered in the panel.
If you haven't yet, please take a look at the following article: http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm/loadFeature/4585/Reading-Comprehension.html
So while I appreciate your suggestions on how the author and myself should be doing our jobs, I think we'll stick to handling that internally.
Cheers,
Jon Wood

Oh please, stop making excuses. Note the following sentence, "What we got was a fairly in-depth exploration of DCUO's Character Create system," the content of which is completely missing.

while i am looking forward to this game, i dont think this helped any. i see that there are a lot of choices, but i'm not really seeing the huge amount that seems like should be there.
the things that concern me with this game is the lack of info that they put out. here is no real exception. i dont mind the visuals and can get a basic idea of how character creation works, but as Velnias said the content for it is mostly missing. However that said, i think the game looks good and am glad they pushed it back all things considered. hopefully this gives them more time to get rid of the kinks and gives us a clean start instead of another rushed product.
Hell yeah : STAFF ! I'll finally be able to make my Gambit-like character... Really need to see more of that one.
Anyone else noticed that the every created characters look a bit weird standing next the DC characters ?.. Like they don't belong in the same universe ? Almost every characters I've seen were very metalic, robot-like toons. While DCs are more like spandex with underwear over it...
For those thinking they'll be able to make Marvel-esque characters with the DCUO character creation tool, tread carefully: City of Heroes/Cryptic got into a lot of trouble with Marvel over copyright infringements, namely where subscribers to the game created characters almost identical in appearance to Marvel identities.

The case has since been settled, but with such a powerful character creation tool, why would you want to create something that's been done before? Sure, use your favourite superheroes as inspiration, but don't replicate. Use your imagination!
Three colors. Six years later, and CoX still does not have three colors. So many costume pieces cry out for at least three colors.
Considering the "Four Color" history of comics, I'm surprised we do not have four.
It is nice to see that DCUO is going to sport three... perhaps one day CoX will catch up, eh?

The problem with CoX adding an additional color to the costume piece customization is that EVERYONE would have to redesign their costumes and a lot of people would complain about either their character's look being ruined by the change or the new color is superfluous and they just set it to be identical to one of the other two colors on their costume pieces. That's the problem with making a fundamental change to a core system in a game that's already been out for a while. Remeber what happened to Star Wars: Galaxies when they alienated most of their player base with a fundamental change to the game. A brand new game like DCUO gets to learn from what previous games did wrong and do it right straight out of the gate, and nobody complains because they're starting fresh and have no preconceptions about how things are supposed to work in the new game.
Hey, I liked the aarticle. I learned a lot that I didnt know.
The game is still too much "flowers & sunshine" for my tastes. I still probably wait one month after release and read all the reviews before I decided to try it.
But I do like the fact they are adding lots of (that I could gleam) options to the character creation and "faction" choices.
"I understand that if I hear any more words come pouring out of your **** mouth, Ill have to eat every fucking chicken in this room."
Well that would require a total and complete re-design of all the player textures in the game... Not something i would belive is easy to do.
Not that some textures arent in dire need of a update but still i have a hard time teeing htem doing it. If they should work on any thing it is bringing back the ability to set different textures for upp and lower part of pants... I still have a CoH hero that i can not take in to the tailor because he have a nice star pattern on his lower pants legs.
This have been a good conversation
You would expect DCUO to do better in the graphics department than CoX which was released five years ago. But I question the three colour scheme, for one piece of an outfit that is fine. But this seems to mean that you can't have say black/blue/brown but with dark red boots. That is more restrictive than CoX. Being able to have three colours on one piece of your outfit will go some way to countering that of course, but its one of those things you would have to do yourself to be sure of the ramifications.
At this stage in the game, I have to say that I am happy that they are finally getting around to changing the originating location of some of the powers...six years later. Heck, it took them five years to do the color customization for the powers and to add some additional animations. It was always a sore spot in regard to the claims to character customization.
Initially, I did not have much interest in DCUO (aside from the more Dark Knight arcs for Batman or Vertigo books, I've never been a DC fan). However, I liked the dark tone of the cinematic trailer and some of the character customization information looks good.
I had high hopes when I had first heard that there was going to be a CO, thinking about how customized characters were with the Hero System - but when I saw the game, it felt like a toddler's version of CoX...
...I still have the problem in CoX that I cannot make the hero I want. It is not even a case of wanting to make a godlike character - simply a case that the way they have the archetypes set up rules out the vast majority of characters most of us grew up with in the comic book world.
DCUO has a real opportunity here... hope they do not blow it.

Not to totally go off on a tangent since this is a DCUO thread but I do not think it would be terribly difficult for CoX to "upgrade" to a 4 color system -- it would likely take 1 coder to update the costume creator, 1 coder to update the player model, and then take on some interns to play with the existing costume part textures. Over-simplified here but, very doable.
Very excited about this release but as with Champions Online there is a 'plasticy' sheen to the graphics I don't care for (CoX seems to avoid this thankfully). I think the delayed release will be good for the finished product though and the thought of interacting with some of those great DC characters and living in 'that' world is really cool!
More in depth about character customization can be seen from these videos:

Watched the videos and have to say I am a tad bit disappointed, but understand the reasoning.
You can't color individual pieces of your costume. You just pick the 3 colors for your entire outfit. You can't make your gloves black and your pants red or vice versa. If your gloves and pants are both considered a primary color, and your primary color is black then both are black. There is no way to change it. The character creator is much more limited than CoX. Even though CoX only offers 2 colors, that is 2 colors per slot that can be setup. This is 3 colors overall.
But like I said, I understand their reasoning. They don't want people looking like Rainbow Brite in their universe. CoX had some people with really fugly costumes. On the flipside they also had some very creative people that pulled off amazing looking costumes.
My main disappointment right now is no GL inspirations. Come on DCUO the movie is coming out soon. GL is my fav comic.
Well then... watching part three of that when they got to the colors... using my best Captain James T. Kirk typing here...
...leaves me completely disinterested in the game.
I was going to say, the costumes looked very basic in many of the trailers - this would explain it.
That is a shame.

Watched the those videos last night. An came to almost the same conclusion.I didnt like the ui for the character creator it felt to me like it makes it look like theirs more options than their are with the big names on the side.I knew their had to be limitations since it was gona be on ps3.But i didnt expect a robust 3 color systme well being so clunky as havieng to color the whole body .
So it be realy hard to make say legs an boots green an uper body orange...Good thing dc doesnt have annnyyyone like that huh?
I did like the archtype conecitons to icon heroes an costume presets for fast play.Ill keep a eye on it as i plan to add this to my station acess. But if it was a seperate mmo an paying the 15 a month for it i doubt it very much.As i play coh an im realy happy with it atm.An they are going back an retexturing old costume peices as well.
"Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing." Robert E. Howard, The Tower of the Elephant (1933)
looks amazing to me, I can't wait. Ps3 is the selling point since I won't have to upgrade my computer now.
Cant wait for it to go to beta then come out fully.
Few points:
1) There's plenty of info about DCUO out there, especially character create. Look elsewhere for it.
2) It hasn't been mentioned whether or not individual pieces can be colored, but a sub-menu of the "color gear" tab has "customize gear colors" as an option that is not clicked on in any video to date. Perhaps it's something being tweaked. Personally, I expect it to mean switching around colors (ie, blue red yellow on your gloves instead of red yellow blue) but until that's confirmed, take it all with a grain of salt.
3) Costume options will, as we know, drop *in force* in DCUO. You will most definitely have a crapton of look options post-endgame.
4) There is more info on character create out there. Look for it. Do not rely on one site for all of your info about one game, particularly MMORPG. With so many games to cover, this site cannot devote the neccesary time to one game that it would need to to have all or even most of the info available. DCUOSource.com would be a good place to start, but i emphasize looking for yourself.
