I'm really disappointed that this list didn't include Nemesis from City of Heroes. He was the epitome of a mastermind villain. You never knew exactly what his angle was, and half the time you got tricked into doing his work for him. Even if you beat him...you would only find out later that you really hadn't. Even though there's only so much you can do with storytelling in a MMO (especially given CoH's limitations), he's been one of the only baddies that's had me shaking my fist at my monitor shouting "I'll get you next time Nemesis, for real!"
The Clenched Fist of Hate from SWg was mentioned, and he is a fight to remember.
Also, NK-Necrosis was a real badd a$$ that used to take good teamwork to beat. He is easy to solo now, but what a fight when he was first introduced with RoTW
The necro from eq 1 in qeynos hills was Tovax Vmar and anyone running from qeynos to the karanas plains has been killed by this guy many many times. I remember when i was higher level on my ranger, everytime i came through there I tracked him down and killed him for all the corpse runs i had to make cause of him.
Son of Arugal in Silverpine Forest in WoW. Each time I levelled a newbie toon there he would pop up in the middle of a quest and eat me. He had a very wide wandering area and always seemed to show up at the most inconvenient times. Most satisfying to go back and kill him at higher level for revenge!
Similarly I would add Lunn the Warmonger from Age of Conan. That guy would smack me so many times when trying to quest in Thunder River. Bit difficult to get revenge though seeing as he was a wandering raid mob!
He's the first necro trainer. Sure, he's a bit dark and creepy, but hey, what do you expect? He's a Necromancer. Then, the Searing. He goes completely insane, and starts screwing around with magic taboo for even Necromancers, and you have to take him out. Later, we find him screwing around with his own cult, and getting skills named after himself.
If there's one villain who would just not go away, Verata's it.
Originally posted by nerrollus Seriously? That's the list? God, I swear WoW has ruined this genre... What about D'Vinn from EQ1? That mother dropped more noobs than any of those top 5 combined.
Love this game, too bad graphics engine seems to be dead in the water. AO is a much better game then any of the others mentioned here.....What happened to complexity being a positive?
New engine goes live in Q1 2011, perhaps a beta in Q4 2010 already. So its not dead, its very much alive!
I would'nt hold my breath on that date. That engine was supposed to launch back in 2008, 2009, 2010 and now 2011.
Ambassador Dvinn Is there anyone who played Everquest who didn't go to Crushbone? Is there anyone who has gone to CB who hasn't been slain by this Dark Elf in a massive train?
For AO's new engine the 2011 seems realistic estimate finaly, atleast they are working on it and adding "features"...
Still, I don't understand why it's said to be so bad...
Griefing Uncle Pumpking Heads are comming ;D Hard to say if there is any realy decent baddies around in AO, it's gotten bit easy... Might be Master of Time and Space, those exposive adds spawned, they can insta-kill... On other hand there is some ecounters which are annoying and quite deadly...
He always caught me by surprised and ended up giving me corpse runs =(
Kizdean Gix from Everquest
Kizdean was memorable for me, because of how long I had to camp him for the dagger, and he was an under-con and had crazy run speed, he was fast even when snared.
UO
Minax- The Dark Mistress (She was played by a GM during the live event where she invaded Trinsic, . She also showed up during the event for the Age of Shadows expansion)
I really wish people would stop mentioning things in Eve unless they have played the game at least long enough to understand the ins and outs of the game. It just makes them look stupid.
Hmm. . I agree with Vancleef he was a lot of fun back in the day and I look forward to fighting him again in Cat. I remember when he was bugged and you could get THREE of him and his guards coming at ya. That was some crazy fun!
I'd put up IS-7's from WoT's. When I first ran into them they'd always just waste me. Sure now that I'm in a higher tier tank they don't scare me like they used to but now you see them everywhere so it's worse. (Still fun though)
Current Game: Asssasins Creed 2(PS3, Gamer Tag: Happy_Hubby) Current MMO: World of Warcraft and World of Tanks Former Subscribed MMO: Star Trek Online, Aion, WoW, Guild Wars, Eve Online, DAoC, City of Heroes, Shattered Galaxy, 10six. Tried: Too many to list

+1 for Kiz.
I was up way too late one night before flying off on holiday. Kiz snuck up and one hitted me (I was a dress wearing enchanter). Some of the guild turned up to look for my corpse but it was nowhere to be found. This was a big problem for me as all my kit would have rotted by the time I got back from holiday.
I petitioned and a GM turned up to drag my corpse from the "underworld". It makes me realize how much care I had invested in that character, and how little I care about most modern toons. I only get a buzz from Eve now as it is the only game that makes me risk anything.
Has anyone mentioned GWULIN from DAoC- Albion - near Albion bridge next to Salisbury Plains???
Gwulin was the towns person you could actually attack (something about a spy or quest or something...but he was attackable, but did not aggro you!)
I must have murdered Gwulin ten thousand times per alt (and I played DAoC with about 30+ alt's on albion side)
The quest was so minor I never even did it, and thus never knew why he was there or why I was allowed to murder a townsperson. But i did. Thousands upon thousands of time, until it developed along with my best friend Kyle as "IT'S GWULIN! GET HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!" even at level 50.

Hate to break it to yo, but Son of Arugal wasn't a named mob :P
That is the generic name for a minion of Arugal (a werewolf)
The reason he had such a wide wandering area and always seemed to show up at the most inconvenient times is because there were probably hundreds of thousands of them roaming around the zone area throughout the time you played :P
Sorry...but I only learned this bc I also thought Son of Arugal was a named mob, until I began seeing Son of Arugal on every mob in that one dang keep.

No EQ1 mobs? And Foxbat?! He was great in the old Champions PnP...I think this week's column was made drunk and at the last minute >.>
SO...made normally?
LoL...

Or more seriously, The Sleeper (eq1 Spirit? Dragon) for the reason that it created so many myths among players.. why was it there, could it be killed, was it the ultimate mob - No one knew and all the xpeculations that made it epic.

What no spriggarns?
http://rose.webhowl.net/DAOC/Dark Age of Camelot Rise of the Spriggarn.htm
I freaking hated those things. That damn scream they did every time they attacked...
I thought the coolest mob in all of DAoC was the Glimmer King. But that's just me. All the rest of these baddies on the list are beyond meh.
Ahh DAoC how I missed you.
Verata the Necromancer from GW1.
He's the first necro trainer. Sure, he's a bit dark and creepy, but hey, what do you expect? He's a Necromancer. Then, the Searing. This was going to be my pick too. I hated Dorn, lol.

Dorn B'Dynn was a wicked bad ass too...
<ooc> What's Dorn drop?
<ooc> Noobs
lol
How about reds in UO pre trammel. I know that I pooped myself when I saw them coming after me! Goon swarm smoon schwarm.
If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25 cars that got 1000 MPG - Bill Gates

eq2
That gargoyle mob in the graveyard in ( just outside ) freeport. Especially when they still had XP debt and shards.
Kizdean was memorable for me, because of how long I had to camp him for the dagger, and he was an under-con and had crazy run speed, he was fast even when snared.

Just about any Dark Elf NPC in EverQuest 1 was a fucking terror. They were always way under conned and would destroy you.
Hmm. . I agree with Vancleef he was a lot of fun back in the day and I look forward to fighting him again in Cat. I remember when he was bugged and you could get THREE of him and his guards coming at ya. That was some crazy fun!

I am surprised no one has mentioned Drelzna yet.
She might be a more memorabe "baddie" for other reasons. Like the number of players she turned into bad guys....
Kizdean Gix and Holly Windstalker are both worth mentioning also. Both had a knack for showing up at the worst time.
Donkey Kong !
