The "Gaming Connoisseurs" have steered clear of FFXIV for good reason.
This simply isn't true. I'm not going to say all connoisseurs have the same taste, but we've definately got some professional reviewers out there who rather like what the game is offering, even though we have some that don't. (Last count, it was something like 3 positive, 3 mixed, 5 negative.) They haven't steered clear of the game universally.

There has been zero reviews from professional (and known) critics that have recommened the game. In fact its been universally panned.

I didn't say anything about reviewers, I was talking about those with a refined taste that only indulge themselves with the most refined games. You know, those people with a taste for fine quality. The "Gaming Connoisseurs" won't touch anything sub par, it must exceed expectations in all areas.
Or are we finally done with this "Gaming Connoisseur" crud? People that enjoy the game do so despite all it's flaws, they don't like it because it's flawless.

Every source which has had something good to sday about the game that as a metacritic aggregate hadhundreds if not thousands of reviews, and they're paid to make reviews, so like it or not, those are professional/known critics.

So where did I say differently? All I did was maybe suggest it takes a connoiseur of games to be able to overlook the flaws, since the average joe who doesn't know much about the game certainly wouldn't be as prone.

LOL. You sure love changing your scope when you'r[e] called out.
Looks pretty cut and dry to me. Maybe you should take a little responsibility for the falsehoods you tell instead of ad hominem ploys like this?

Nah, trust me a connoisseur has no issue pointing out that a wine is to bitter or to tart even if the do like the bouquet. Your average joe is less critical than a connoisseur anyways.
But in any case, since this is seemingly going to go no where as you are set on trying to make it look as if those that do enjoy FFXIV are in some way superior to those that do not (I understand though I truly due, it's like back in highschool when someone didn't want to be picked on for something they liked but others didn't they tried to pass it off as cool by saying something along the lines of "well I can understand why you don't like it only cool kids like it"), I guess we should just agree to disagree and move on.
Well, the review in and of itself shows that even someone who has been and to this day still is playing feels the game is poorly done. The guy even posts his character info.
Also, professional or not, he does go into detail of his experiences with the game and how certain dynamics seem to be more of a hinderance than fun.
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
"...Stop thinking, pretending, and saying that you are too smart, enlightened, and above other people for them to truly understand you, and perhaps people will stop disliking you. Do you really think anyone will respond to you well when you effectively say, "I'm better than you, you can't understand me, and I refuse to be burdened by your stupidity, plebeian"
this response to one of geldonyetich's blog entries says it all. Just stop responding to him. he'll lose interest if he stops getting the attention he so obviously craves.
Meh, I don't think the "haters" want him to stop posting lol. I mean, sure many of us have issues with the game but it's not like it's the anti christ. It's just a game at the end of the day and most of these discussions talking about why people don't like the game would end fairly quickly because it just ends shortly after it starts with everyone participating in the discussion agreeing and making a few jokes about it.
Then you through in someone like "an un-named poster in this thread" (if I name him he will try to report me lol) who keeps throwing gasoline on the fire instead of letting it burn itself out, well the negativity surrounding the game just gets blown way out of proportion lol. People start to take it personal and even more negativity starts to be generated.
In the end, a poster like "un-named poster" gives haters something to hate and it becomes some form of entertainment. Everyone wants there chance to trip him/her up and hopefully make him/her look silly.
It's sad because the poster has no idea that while trying to defend the game in threads that have any form of negativity about it they are actually doing the game harm lol.
It's okay to like the game, it's okay to not like the game, it's okay to voice your opinion. But you should never feel the need to justify your opinion nor should you try and deny another theres. And for the love of jeebus don't try and take the whole, "well since you don't agree with me then that makes me better than you" like "un-named poster".
Guys, I don't like reporting your posts. Stick to the topic at hand and stop with this baseless flaming out of apparent resentment I have anything good to say about the game. This thread's probably going to get locked with a reminder to pay attention to the terms of service because you couldn't stick to the subject matter and decided it's just easier to tear into me.
I've figured you out Geldon. Bad thing about egos, they trip you up sometimes.
Has anyone else figured it out yet? Geldon pretty much spelled it out right here.
He enters the threads he doesn't like, makes just enough remarks to get people's attention on him and his remarks, thus "derailing" the thread and then reporting those who respond to his remarks with the right amount of flame which he was baiting for. He then consequently hopes to get the thread locked, and thus the review and/or thread he doesn't like gets shoved off the main page.
So this is the point where I simply put you on ignore, Geldon. I don't normally announce to people I'm putting them on ignore. In fact, I don't even have anyone else on ignore. But since you feel announcing that you are ignoring certain people or reporting them is somehow a good thing, I'm going to return the favor to you.
Not only am I going to ignore you, but I am going to send a recommendation to the community manage Mike Britton to look through your recent posting history so he can see the pattern of flaimbaiting you have been employing and act accordingly.
Good day, sir.
Yeah, he's been flame baiting non stop and reporting anyone he can catch in his net.
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb
Technically speaking, I did the freelancer writer gig for a now-defunct professional gaming site ventue in the past. It's not that hard to do.
Geldonyetich, being a writer myself, I have to point out that the reason this "professional gaming site" you freelanced for went under could very well be because they hired people of your limited caliber. Let me elaborate: you're not intelligent. I'm sorry for being so blunt, but it has gotten to the point where I wince every time I read one of your posts. Your self-aggrandizing and transparent attempts to appear erudite are like nails on a chalkboard. Putting your video gaming tastes aside, your writing ability alone speaks volumes about your lack of education and formal training with regards to prose narrative structure.
Let's take the first sentence of your FF14 review:
"Being a true gaming enthusiast entails being more enthusiastic about games than most by definition."
The very first sentence of your magnum opus defense of a game that you hold so dear is a convoluted mess. It doesn't mean what you want it to mean. It's nonsensical. It reads like a parody of bad writing. A caricature of style. Never mind the missing comma or the backwards sentence structure, just focus on your contrived attempt to sound like an authoritative source for knowledge. Big emotions don't come from big words. It's writing 101. Yet, this transgression is committed time and again in your review. It's peppered with improper turns of phrase, poor grammar, tense confusion, sentence structure and spelling errors. Every stylistic and grammatical fault is magnified by your clawing attempts to be taken seriously.
In your blog, you stress your age, the length of time you have been a gamer and your gaming pedigree. You stress this so much, in fact, that you hope credibility will be bestowed upon you due to chronology rather than any cognitive growth you may have experienced throughout the years. Why should I value the opinion of a thirty-year-old man who doesn't know the difference between a hyphen and an em dash?
Here is another sentence from your review:
"While it is a bit more bloated than games which made mass compatibility a priority, Final Fantasy XIV will run on the overwhelming majority of computers which are reasonably up to date even if you may have to lower the settings in a few places. "
Disregarding the sloppy stylistic choices, there are four errors in this sentence. Can you pick them out? Of course you can't. That's the reason, to you, writing seems like it's "not that hard." The person who linked the article about the Dunning-Kruger effect was spot on. And as much as I hate to see you continue embarrassing yourself, I know you shall because you will take my post as an attack on your character and reply with scorn. Please don't. The day a person realizes that they aren't as smart as they had originally assumed should be one of reflection and study. One day your opinions may be worth what you believe them to be, but that day is not today.
In the meantime, please stop disparaging my profession.

A fair enough rant, but you misunderstood what I wrote. I was saying that it was easy to get published under the title of a freelance writer in certain places on the Internet. I wasn't disparaging the entire writing profession by saying something as silly as it's easy to survive as a freelance writer - far from it, it's a cutthroat world that I don't find your time away from to be a good investment.
Furthermore, I find your taking a personal blog entry which has never seen an editor's touch as a sign of how intelligent I am to be an insult upon your english degree. It's not intended to be used as a blugeon, no matter how much you may have decided the recipient is deserving. Your sweeping generalizaitons of intelligence do the word very little merit.
I'd like to address your individual points further but, frankly, they're way off-topic here and that I am replying to you, on the subject of abject negativity you have broached, wanders dangerously close to a violation of this forum's terms of service. If you have anything negative to say about me, perhaps you should do so in a private message instead of this kind of self-deprecating, public declaratory manner.
When you guys are done with this strange writing talent posturing, please be aware: his name is Mike Bitton.

Technically, it's Michael Bitton, at least that's what he puts on his emails.
"Britton," blargh, even though I quoted that from somebody else when I wrote that, I confirmed that against my email and still misread it. Hey, I might like to say I'm moderately sharp (which apparently paints a gigantic bullseye on your forehead no matter who says it) but everybody makes mistakes. Einstein had the right of it:
"It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer." - Einstein
You've got to admit, I've been staying with the negativity here waaaay too long.
You are certainly not alone. I too can admit the same.

I was going to note this in the opening of my reply here, so thanks Cecropia.
In any case, this thread has gone severely off-topic and the targeting of any particular user is really unacceptable. I am not going to discuss whether or not this or another user is in violation of our Rules of Conduct on the open forums, but what I will say is this: if you do not wish to see a particular user's posts, use the Block button.
I really should not have to explain this to you all. This incessant back and forth arguing between the same users is really getting out of hand. Keep things civil if you do not wish to run afoul of our moderation staff, and that includes making baiting or harassing posts.
I am locking this thread and creating a sticky for FFXIV off-site review links, as well as a separate sub-forum where you can post your own FFXIV review threads and discuss them.
