Can you list the ones you have played, and how long for?
It seems that it is your first, and for many new games are addictive, but I have played pretty much all the main 1`s for many months, and tried most others.
I`m sure many posting are i nthe same situation and can take that experience and apply it too what we see and expect.
which has nothing to do with it. I'm playing it now out of curiosity, i like to play new MMO's. First impressions are that while it is VERY different in the way it does things -- UI etc -- it's not a 4/10 IMO. In fact it's great to see an mmo that doesn't conform to the usual UI and systems.
It has nothing to do with conforming to the usual UI and systems. The UI, market system, no recorded recipes and targeting to name a few are not practical. There is too many unnecessary steps to take for simple actions. With the lack of content, all these things adding up does leave a bad impression on this game. I never played XI, but was really hyped for this game. I got bored with the game on the second day. It does deserve the ratings it gets. Yes they can turn it around, but I will not be supporting them again.
I think it has to do with the expectations. A player getting an indie or F2P MMO is going to have lower expectation than a AAA title with a subscription.
Gotta agree with this. If you're expecting gold and all you get is silver, you're going to think it's crap because it's not gold.
However, XIV is not even silver. It's the dirt stain found on the pants of the miner who extracts the gold. So in this case, the abnormally low ratings may be justified.
I love this game, but at the moment is definitely a 6. It's rating is fair, not to say that it won't be an 8 come march, I have no doubt it will, but as it stands it is definitely a 6-7 rating. The UI is just too slow, monsters are scarce, and market wards are a pain. I'm thinking by december it will be worthy of a 7, and by march an 8.
This is why I do not understand FFXIV players that are backing SE. You admit the game sucks right now but you still like it? Why? Because they will make it better? They promised?
Warhammer?
Age of Conan?
These are great games (at least they had the right idea and then butchered it) but never fully recovered from their flop launch. FFXIV recently gave a free 30 days..... Can you logically explain why? I can... So few players had there subs remaining that in attempts to avoid a complete meltdown SE said "please stay! it's free! what do you have to lose?" and followed up with a nice letter about things they are 'focusing' on to improve the game.... Things that have been complained about since closed beta and ingored.
I hope FFXIV closes faster than APB. I hope FFXIV doesn't even live long enough to get a PS3 release. SE could have avoided this and a company of their status has no excuse for releasing such epic fail.
I think it has to do with the expectations. A player getting an indie or F2P MMO is going to have lower expectation than a AAA title with a subscription.

I don't think the expectation were really that far fetched to be honest. An MMO better than it's predecessor.
I personally didn't expect such a step backwards, when all the groundwork was already there to build on, but i suppose i should have known better.
All the people who've been rating this, on average have put it below games like Fiesta Online, Tibia and other O.K games. I mean really? I got the collector's edition for this, and I noticed huge increases in performance from Open beta to release. That's how hard they are working. Furthermore, the game is so addictive! to be fair, I am surprised I've stuck with it this long, but I just keep liking it more and more.
It is definitely underrated, to say the least. Putting this in the 6s is so unfair, I am gobsmacked! Alright, it's not perfect, but it's not terrible either! I think people I rating this way too low, and giving FFXIV a bad image. Give it a chance people. Regardless of whether "it still has bugs" or "it doesn't matter, it still has bugs!" it's a great game.
This only problem I find is people don't talk enough.
Thanks!
Keep in mind that pretty graphics do not make a great game by itself. Although I certainly haven't played all of the games listed above FFXIV, I have played a number of them and, although lacking in graphics in many cases, they have at least engaging play compared to how I felt playing FFXIV. As several others have posted, you have your opinion and I have my opinion...in the greater scheme of things neither of our opinions carries more weight than the others, but obviously your opinion matters more to yourself and vice versa.
I'm glad you enjoy the game...it is always good when someone finds a game they like to play. After spending hours in alpha and beta, I had to admit that there were games that I quit long ago that I would rather play than FFXIV. Some think the UI is a nice change of pace...but you need to understand that the overwhelming majority see the UI as something that was in a time capsule for over a decade. Some think the time caps on professions as a good way to keep balance...but you need to understand that the overwhelming majority see the time caps as nothing more than a restriction. Some see the large zones as beautiful places to wander...but you need to understand that the overwhelming majority see those large zones as copy / paste boredom.
I can honestly see why some people enjoy the game. I do not. I am baffled as to why the people who do enjoy the game are unable to admit to the flaws of the game that others may not enjoy. Honestly, I think the adamant attitude of the fan boys refusing to admit to obvious issues did more to damage the reputation of the game than anything else.
This game is a 3-5 / 10 at best. An overwhelming majority of websites around the world have posted this. More than half of the "good points" are graphics related which is not even what most people think of when they describe a good game. Of course graphics are nice but that's like painting a rusty car. They took whole plots of land and landmarks and spammed it across every map making the graphics sort of a moot point. Noone wants to run around looking at the same crap for months on end. The gameplay itself is just sad and to slow and not enough feedback from what you are doing to be entertaining past the "shiny" new game feeling. The entire game feels like a bullitin of checkpoints that they checked off as they added them so that they could say they completed development. People saying this game is going to reach an "8" in a few months are full of it. There are whole systems that need reengineered to reach that point which of course they aren't going to do because those systems are what they banked on to make people keep playing FF14 once they got bored of it. Everything in this game is designed to limit what you can do at a certain point and cause you to take branching paths in developing your character so you are delayed in reaching any "end goals" you may have set for yourself. It was done deliberately and is most certainly engineered that way for a reason and purpose. I don't know what they were thinking when they made this game. I guess they thought people were to stupid to see what they were attempting to set up.

While I take all reviews with a grain of salt, it does not take 4 proffesional reviews and countless numbers of unhappy players to tell me to wait a year...or two before considering a buy. The only other possibility is that the review sites and other gaming forums are all lieing about the game for...whatever reason. Come on, all the sayings like, "this game is not for everyone" and "its not a WoW clone" are exhusted. But, if your happy playing such...games then please enjoy yourself just try to include the bad parts so that others considering the game will know what to expect. You know, the bad parts that they are planning to fix...someday.
The reason it has such a low value is people don't actually rate the games in a non-biased way, if they dislike it they got rate it all 0/1's so that their favorite game's e-peen gets bigger or something... and then on the other side of the coin you get the people rating all 10s like it's a flawless diamond carefully cut (and not in this game only, in all games the more strongly people feel the more you see it.)
Personally i think for actual rating they should throw out ratings that are all 1 number in both directions and also the highest and lowest number on scale because those are never legitimate reviews of the individual aspects.
A large number of negative reviews have never even played the games they're rating. Why? Who knows. Hell there are people posting here who haven't loaded the game since open beta and they're still. here. posting. using third party information to make their points, we're an online digital world boys and girls. Yeah, it should be even lower without all the people giving it 10s. Metacritic gives it a 54. The fact that this site has player reviews at 6.6 or whatever just shows how unprofessional fans of the game can be with their reviews.

I think thats probably the biggest reason for all the negativity. People wanted better than FFXI, some leaps forward in gameplay and in graphics. What we got were some leaps forward in graphics (I must say they are impressive) but some giant leaps backwards in game play.
Two things are pretty much universally agreed on, the graphics are great the game play isn't. Which makes it a game that most won't play. The people that value graphics over game play can defend FFXIV until they are blue in the face but most people care about game play more.

Perhaps you are correct but one has to stop and think when 4 major review sites and countless numbers of players are on almost every forum complaining about the same issues. There is a thin line between non-bais reviewing and factual reporting. In short, if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and walks like a duck...GUESS WHAT?
No wait, dont tell me, "this game is not for everyone" "upgrade your PC" "go back to WoW" it was just released" "the patch is coming...soon" "you are unable to enjoy it" add infinitum.
At this time the game is worth all the bad reviews it's getting. Maybe in 6 months it would be worth taking a look again. I tried the game extensively, made it to level 11 but the game just frustrate me with bad features, bugs and random problems. Everytime i would play i would enjoy myself for a while then find something utterly frustrating that would cause me to quit. One of the biggest negative is the way the game determine success vs failure, it seems totally random (dice roll) you could succesfully craft something to 80% by getting 3-4 success in a row then all the sudden fail 5 times in a row. It doesnt make any sense. I find myself renaming the game Random Fantasy.

Negatives always outweigh the positives because for some reason people like to go post negatives on games they don't play and have never played based on 3rd party information... i really wish there was a way to validate who had a game before it could be reviewed, might get something other than 'hype/infamy' based rating, go look at the last 10 reviews of ffxiv if you want an example, there is probably 1 10 but i guarantee you'll see several of the lowest rating on the recent reviews page. Shrug.
Reviews, especially those by people who don't even own a game, are particularly pointless... but that's something most of the games on the site have to deal with at some level or another, the higher profile the title though, the more they have to deal with it (which is why you often see very popular aaa titles being beat by indie titles and f2p games in the ratings.)

The game was a worse flop than AOC. They let a lot of people down. I don't have the exact numbers, but out of all the boxes they've sold so far, 75% of them haven't resubbed after their free game time. That's saying something.
Huh? The first possible original resub date would be 10/22(21? depending on loction?) Now it isn't until 11/22 with the additional 30 days given. Now if you said, 75% haven't logged in and meant that instead, I'd be inclined to agree.

So all the fans rating 10 are unprofessional and there reviews should not count but the haters who rate it1/0 are spot on and should still count towards the actual ratings??
Its funny how you ppls always seem to be able to only see the stuff that benefits your opinion right now.....
O.o a rating of 6.6 on this side but Metacritic only gave it a 54 u all have to be stupid to rate it higher.....why do some ppls just dont wanna understand that thinking for yourself and having an own opinion is not a bad thing....
Also why would u only refer to a lower rating there r ratings over 70 as well why would u not refer to them...oh wait i know u didn't really wanna make a good true point u just wanted to rant a bit right??
I do not say now that a rating from 10 is right hell its not but your point was just plain stupid....cant we all just play nice and fair?

I was just messing around. It seems ridiculous to me to think that the reason this game is rated low is because of "haters". It's rated low because people don't like it.

I apologize if i did misunderstood your intentions but would like to point out 1 thing tho
The fact of me liking or hating a game can not be of any concern when i rate a game if it is i will not rate it fair and therefore would only state my opinion but not an actual neutral rating. Now most dont understand that and therefore most ratings we get r merely opinions which shouldn't count at all anyway and if u have a game which for whatever reasons is not liked but a lot of ppls u will get lower rating only because of the mass of bad opinions. That however cant and shouldn't be taken as proof of the game being good or bad for all it really shows is that a lot of ppls just dont like the game (say because its not there style of game)
This is an unfounded myth that negatives outweight positives, any psychologist would agree.
Humans have a tendency to over estimate positively. In fact, that's probably why you think your myth above is accurate. You want to justify you're right so when you see a negative review, in your head, you conclude your hypothesis is correct that most people post negative finds more often than positive ones, which just isn't accurate based on the data.
Not trying to criticize you, just pointing it out. Also, just look at reviews in general. Statistically a 5 would be average but we all know that a 7.5 is more like the average and a 5 is considered terrible.
Yeah, apparently the people who review games for a living are wrong and youre right. Yep i dont see that being the case.
I think they should have went in a deifferent direction with questing, but my biggest concern was the lack of a open environment. "OMG this looks so amazing!!!" well of course it does they took out environmental substance and substituted prettiness. I cant walk over this 3ft high mound....but at least i look good notdoing it. I have to follow this annoying path to some objective. Did i just get two shotted by a ladybug? Dont get me wrong i was close to liking this game i just want more freedom in my mmos. I like running into the wilderness and jumping off hills exploring mountains, caves, ect. It seems they just added unnecessary crap to prolong your journey through the world.

Tibia was one of my first MMO experiences... And it was a great game for its age. FFXIV is supposed to be a AAA game. You should compere it to those.

Two things are pretty much universally agreed on, the graphics are great the game play isn't. Which makes it a game that most won't play. The people that value graphics over game play can defend FFXIV until they are blue in the face but most people care about game play more.
like i say ,no ssd or somekind of high speed raid set-up ?then you will hate this game just because of the loading time.
we dont even speak of the game yet

I wasn't putting down either game, friend I love both games too. You're right, Tibia is a classic.
I was merely using those as example for less budget game comparisons.

IMO underrated is an overstatement.
