A little tidbit before hand: I AM NOT A FINAL FANTASY FAN BOY! I have only played Final Fantasy 3 on the DS all the way through. My only real love in this series was the Tactics Series (BEST GAMES EVER) I tried FFXI and didn't really catch on.
Now onto the main part of the post. This game is really engaging to me. I don't know why or understand all the hate. Yes I have played WoW. WoW is a great game, but Final Fantasy XIV feels like a completely different game. It's very engaging with an awesome storyline so far! The combat reminds of other Final Fantasy games which is great that it holds true to the series. The quests are pretty excited seeing as you can do combat and non combat quests. The game itself is beautiful. Fantastic character models and the world is stunning. The UI wasn't as hard to navigate as I thought from reviews and reading, but I can definitely see how this game can be played better with a controller, however it works fine with just a keyboard (no mouse). Anyways I recommend all to try this game with an open mind and don't expect a WoW clone or it to be like any MMO out there and you will love it!

I'm sure people would be interested to know how long you have played so far - just to get an idea of how well-founded your opinion is.
Not to be an ass or anything, but FFXIV is not a good game right now. Most of the players know it, and SE seemingly knows it. You enjoy it which is great, but the majority has spoken and they have said, "This game is not finished. Do not buy it yet."
Sure, it's different, and I like different, but I want it to be different in a good way. The only thing they have done that I've seen praise for, aside from the poorly optimised graphics engine, is the class system, and even that has been done before. I think they spent three of the last five years working on Crystal Tools and forgot to make a fun game.
dont rush in too fast
yes the game is good, but it is also buggy and lackign a lot of stuff to do, if you play too much youll end up in a grind fest
ive managed to get 26 physical, trades to 9-11 and conj to 14 and it is a lot of time consuming grind
enjoy it but dont rush, and hopefully you wont notice too bad and SE will have released more goodies to keep us busy
I've put in about 12 hours so far. I never said this was a full review, but a mere standpoint from how I am doing now. Just because I haven't played all the way through any other Final Fantasy game doesn't mean I am oblivious to how the games play out. I said I beat 3. I've also played a bit of 4,7 and 13. And 1 and 2 on the GBA when I was younger cause I got it for Christmas. The gameplay hasn't really changed. I've also watched friends play in school and stuff.
There are 2 reasons for the hate. First of all is it clear that SE released the game far too early and it is annoying that a company that size does something that stupid, they are not Funcom, Cryptic or Mythic. They should be professional enough to wait until they finished making the game and not patch in as they go.
But more importantly is the user interface. This is one of the 2 worst UIs ever, together with the one Darkfall launched with. There is no reason that a UI should be more complicated than it have to be, clunky menus is what really turn most people away from the game.
There is of course the lag too but I blame early release for that as well.
All this can be fixed of course but it should have been from launch. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy it but I think even the people who enjoy the game see these points. SE should have learned from Vanguard that it is not a good idea to release a game before it has enough polish, that is the difference between many subs and few.
The game have some good points like the graphics but I don't think it will ever truly recover from the launch like VG, WAR and AoC. Too bad but that is how these things work.
I really enjoyed the game at first as well. After I hit the mid twenties that changed. To gain one rank in Alchemist it took 3 hours (gathering mats via botany, as none were for sale) followed by pressing the A button on my controller constantly for 4-5 hours straight (no surplus). The Hardest and longest part was having to rummage through my unsortable inventory each and everytime to pick out the materials. That kind of grind may be tolerable in combat groups with other people, but crafting is a solo affair (as far as actually crafting the item).
And lets not forget the travel. I don't mind long distances I have to travel, but what FFXIV does is remove any real danger from the travel, making it a mindless timesink. The only time you are in the slighest bit of danger when traveling from Limsa to Gridania is the path right before you reach camp Drybone where there are aggresive antlings, but as long as you stay on the road they're no danger at all.
There are many more things that are starting to stress my patience with this game, but these were the two that caused me to quit playing last night and aren't very noticible in the first few levels of play.
Yea your right, game play is final fantasy- thats why I like it, they have that same fighting style which I love myself. Im enjoying it a lot also. What server are you on?
Hmm Seifer, Hate...much? You speak of WoW worse than those on this site speak of FFXIV. It is good you found a game you enjoy playing however, the quality is certainly questioned. I mean several Professional reviewers/countless players and a number of FF old school fans would disagree with your concept of "a very nice game" as it is.
Whoa, is this the spot where I tell a person their opinion is wrong? Maybe my opinion of their opinion is wrong. Maybe your opinion of my opinion of his opinion is wrong. IMHO, play time, post counts, age, rank, etc....don't lend any more or less weight to a person's opinion.
But that's just my opinion...
Gutlard Out!
What, me worry?
The quality is very questionable. The game certainly lacks a high dose of fun factor, but SE probrably already have long-term content planned. It's just mind-boggling that they thought the base game was ready to be released 2010 with all the basic features missing.
SE (Square, anyway) obviously have the talent, but they are also a greedy, ignorant company to boot.
I'm a old school fan an yea I think the game is "a very nice game" this game gets deeper an deeper... just like the other ff's pretty much. the quality of this game is questioned because it just came out an some people I think honestly won't make it in this game whether or not its fixed or not. game actually does take a lot of time, This one is much harder than ffxi was.
FFXIV is just another one of the successfull scams to check off into the failed MMO realm. Anybody who bought any of these listed at release, did not or will not get their moneys for at least the first six months or so...
This is listed by content, quality of release, customer support, bugs, and overall what state the game was in... Subjective opinion on whether the game is 'fun' or not doesn't factor in. I am an admitted sucker to three of these games, and the fourth I got free from my friend to play with him even though I realized it was terrible.
Vanguard - check
AOC - check
WAR - check
STO - check
MO - check
Crimecraft- check
Everybody please welcome
FFXIV
lol its funny because its true. I still log on to do my 8 levequests then back to game "X" for another day or 2.
You're talking raw opinion. Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion but it's also obvious that some opinions hold more weight. If Einstein said string theory was true and a 12 year old with no concepts of physics whatsoever said string theory was wrong, while both are entitled to their opinions, its safe to say one opinion holds a lot more weight than the other.
If you joined the forum yesterday, expect to have to earn a little credibility, that's common sense. If it's specifically about gaming, play time makes ALL the difference in an MMO. If you played WAR or AoC for 2 hours, you'd probably conclude it was awesome when they came out. Then you realized both were lacking a lot down the road and a monthly fee wasn't worth it.
Age, this only a number on the surface but underneath is experience and wisdom. If you're 12 and have only played WoW, your opinion isn't going to hold any weight to someone that has played every MMO since Ultima.
So if it's not clear yet in my argue, what I am trying to say is... your opinion is wrong.
YEA this game more an more addicting. alchemy atm smashing down crystals to make shards. FUN! watching the moon an day of the week effects crafting in this game, more imersive. playing multiple jobs at once. fun! everyday now we are gaining more linkshell members
Spending time doing remedial stuff that is 4x as long as other MMO's for no reason or due to laggy ui....FUN!
I've been playing the game since closed beta and I too am still enjoying the game, but we are only part of a small minority my friend. Many people despise this game at the moment, and they have warrant to do so as well, the game is not finished. But I expect by march of 2011 for this game to have all the bells and whistles one would expect in an FF game.
oh yea it only gets better
Still enjoying it as well and I can't wait to see what the future brings!
Currently, FF14 scored 4.0 in Gamespot and other gaming websites, I wish it could try to raise up score to 7.0 at least. The Sims Online not long ago only 3.5, okay, FF14 is higher score than The Sims Online. But the difference is only 0.5 point. My confidence to FFXIV only when SE regain their game point on several gaming website/magazine. Or at least one gaming website holds different review like Gamespot. It seems that all gaming websites have similar review towards FFXIV.
I wish I could enjoy a game with score 4.0 like you guys.
Well tehre is an easy trick, just ignore the scores from the 'professionals' and the mob and just play the game if you like it.
Neat trick, locate content and enjoyment from a 4.0 game that has been rated too high. Perhaps a little alcohol or better would make the journey to find...something above what everyone admits is in the game.
So ignore the "professionals" and listen to nobody? I can give it a try. Hmm, will nobody became "professionals" as well?
... what games do you like? :P
Reviews suck when you want to know about a game you will always see opinions of other people I prefer watching clips on youtube or trying it myself in beta before purchasing a game.
