In his latest article about Guild Wars 2, MMORPG.com Industry Relations Manager, Garrett Fuller, talks about the Hall of Monuments. The Hall of Monuments is currently active in Guild Wars and the collection of achievements there will have an impact on a player's experience when Guild Wars 2 launches. Check out Garrett's thoughts about the Hall of Monuments and then let us know yours.
Arenanet has really come up with a great idea here. Guild Wars has been out for a while. It has several expansions and has sold millions of copies. The game was solid and had a huge player base. It still runs today and remains popular among players. Guild Wars 2 is coming and as a sequel pretty much negates playing the original any more. Sure some players will stick with Guild Wars after the sequel, but many will make the leap over to the new game. Other game companies have run the risk of switching a player base to a sequel and in an MMO it definitely carries more weight. However, with the Hall of Monuments Arenanet is giving players a reason to stay in Guild Wars and eventually make the leap to the sequel when it launches.

I bought Guildwars due to the Hall of Monuments. Can't wait for Guildwars 2, and this gives me a chance to know the story, and get some extra fluff! My feeling says this gave Guildwars another boost.
Aye it has boosted activity in Guild Wars for sure. However, we have known about the Hall of Monuments since 2007. It has just been a focus now that the rewards for it have been annouced.
the grind before the game
The recent release of info about rewards in GW2 and the War in Kryta content has bought a flood of players back to the game. The War in Kryta content is a great link in lore for anyone interested in seeing how the story will develop at the start of the 250yrs between GW and GW2, the promise is there's more yet to come in Cantha and we may start to get an idea on how/why Tyria lost contact.
I've been absent from the game for a while, always in contact with my guild and logging in for the events to keep my mask collection up to date, it's been a real hoot going back and seeing a busy guild and alliance again. The long gap has also made me appreciate the content again, it's good stuff
I played Guildwars for a few years before moving on to different games. The Hall of Monuments calculator has me back playing a dedicated amount of time each week to increase my perks.
Anet definately puts it's players first, and my current pastime is showing WoW players how excellent GW2 is looking and watching them drool. lol
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.
Yeah I hadn't been playing until the Hall of Monuments calculator came out, then I jumped in again. I was only at 14 points and am up to 29 within a month. The flood of players has made it possible to make money again, so it's really not hard to get the 30 points for the full set of gear skins (and yes, they're only skins...no special stats or the like). Over 30 points is where it gets really difficult though. Fortunately 31+ points just comes with titles, and hopefully it stays that way. If they introduce more items, it'll be irksome...but then for those who have gone through that struggle, I suppose they deserve it. I'd be more happy if they left it at 30 points, but I won't begrudge players more skins for points over 30 should that eventually get implemented.
I'm not sure I'd bother trying to get that myself though x-x That's when you get into max titles/obsidian armor territory, and that's just too huge a timesink for a college kid like me.
"Forums aren't for intelligent discussion; they're for blow-hards with unwavering opinions."
Indeed a clever maneuver by Arenanet. A 5 year old game gets some more exposure for an upcoming game. I expect other companies that want to publish sequels will follow suit.

I agree that they pitched the cut off point for items just right, it's not too intimidating for new comers or those that hadn't bothered while the achievers out there can chase the max title. I'm aiming for 45/50 'Legend of the mists' but I'm still happy with my current title of 'Ghostly hero', I'm just one away from 'Flameseeker'. I'll do it until I stop having fun
14/50 try beat me lol

Don't forget that they also are going to raise the number of heroes you can tagalong with you to basically make the entire game easily soloable. This way, once GW2 drops, GW1 will STILL be viable for people wanting backstory, basically turning it into a single player RPG (of course, people will still be around, but the population drop will be significant). And then ones Hall of Monuments will still carry over into GW2. Both are really good movies on ANet's part.
Hi. First time poster, and I have to say that this is a well written opinion piece.
As a Guild Wars player myself I have to say that I'm very pleased with the way to obtain the rewards in the HoM. Brilliantly done by Anet. And I look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with them and Guild Wars 2 in the future ahead!
I personally don't work on titles, I just let them come naturally. But it seems that now it's worth it to push for the max title.
I'm planning on pushing one title a day so that it won't get repetitive and old really fast.
Monday - Kurzirk
Tuesday - Asura
Wednesday - Dwarf
Thursday - Ebon Vanguard
Friday - Norn
Saturday - Sunspear
Sunday - Lightbringer
Yup, that's the plan.
Ready for GW2!!!
The HoM rewards news has me playing as well. I've had the game for 64 months. And just now I'm realising how great the story is for guild wars. Before, I never cared or paid atention, but now I'm completely into the game.
its got a ton of content to check out. its crazy.
*Sigh* last time I played I didn't cared about titles or any stuff like that so I just have 10 points. So much to do now then.

That is all I have, I need a few more mission in Nightfall and Factions, I have completed GWEN but it needs more grinding to get any points from it. I also work on WAR in Kryta, playing whatever I feels for at the time.
Today it was Faction missions.
It also annoys me that I have a black dyed regular Kurzick armor on my ele, I thought it looked better than the elite one or I would have gotten it instead, I think I spent more time getting all the black dye than I would have for an elite armor.
I am going to be a complete pain in the neck and say the writing style wasn't very interesting. Otherwise, I agree. It is a pretty fantastic idea.
got 47 points on my main account and 20 points on my 2 "mule" accounts :P

I don't like the idea one bit! So it's even grinding BEFORE launch now! Great... and giving GW1 gamers an advantage doesn't sound too good as well.

You gain no advantage from anything obtained from the HoM (with what they've announced so far). It's all purely cosmetic. Even the weapons don't have stats they are purely to get the skin aka the look from items in GW1. For example, lots of people like the Fel Blade look therefore you will be able to skin another item to look like Fel Blade in GW2.

You are more ambitious than me. I have been playing Guild wars since the beginning and have no desire now or ever to grind PVE nonsense in order to gain 1337 lewtz. I am a PVP kind of girl. This just doesn;t rock my world. I am not too keen on their implementation of the Hall of monuments into guild wars2, makes it seem more like an expansion manuever than something appropriate for a new game. I also think it will have a negative impact on the new player base, and may be more limiting than beneficial to the game. Instanced PVE just isn't my thing- so if it isn;t fun for me, no matter how shiny that carrot on a stick is I am not going to do it. * is stubborn that way*
Though I put many hours into the Guild wars series, paid my way just the same as everyone else, this is not doing anything for me. Oh well, I play games to have fun, not be given shiny carrots.
it's just COSMETIC rewards for GW1 players who played for years
it's not meant for *new* GW2 fans who didnt play the original games, though im sure they wouldnt mind if you pick up GW1 now for the HoM rewards
we know abt HoM's link to GW2 since Aug 2007's release of Eye of the North
Have fun storming the castle! - Miracle Max
A ranger's pet is more than cosmetic, they raise it, it attacks on it's own. There is a difference. I have already owned Guild wars 1 since it's release, and all the expansions as well as extra slots. But since I am a PVPer and not " into" PVE this does nothing for me. Yea, I have known about it, I am saying I could care less about it. I paid my way the same as everyone else- and this does nothing for me. Yea, yea PVE complains PVP gets all the cool real prizes. SO be it.
PVE players may love this, as a PVP player it does nothing for me. I am entitled to not like the idea, just as you are entitled to like it. Should I like it just because you do? LOL
girl, i was addressing Elikal's post
and yes you are entitled not to like HoM, but it does nothing for me too
Have fun storming the castle! - Miracle Max
damn im glad i dont have to do those run anymore...me and my ele both cant stand it
all i REALLY wanted was the Deldrimor Mace for the Norn warrior i plan to make, but having the goal out there in front of me gave me the motivation to go back and get enough stuff finished off to get to 30/50.
BRRRRRING ON ZE LEWTZ
Charr: Outta my way.
Human: What's your problem?
Charr: Your thin skin.
I only read the first page of comments looking for an answer, so sorry if this is a repeat question.
Why is it called "The Hall of Monuments"? Is there a hall with monuments in it?
When I originally saw the article and read the intro paragraph, I thought they were going to put momuments to players from GW into GW2 (time line backwards for that?)... that would have been cool.
