I'm happily married, but know a hot looking character when I see one. Whether it's games, comic books, or what have you.

It's natural to lust after something that is attractive. There's nothing wrong with that. Obsessing over it is another story...

Oh now there's a revelation ... everybody thats ever played Tomb Raider is perverted ... lol

not quite.  you're FORCED to play a female in tomb raider.  in most every MMORPG you have the choice.

Well I was only joking ... but hey loads of guys  play with female toons or girls play with male toons ... I'm sorry but I disagree its in no way perverted , they are just games dude .  ;)

i look at it like this.  would you wear womens clothes and go out in public?  i mean, they're just clothes right?

It really depends on a number of factors which differs from game to game.

Like in LOTRO my hobbit and human toons are Male but my elf is female because I really don’t like elf males, they just seem so pompous and they stand weird...they look like they have a stick up their ass

The guys that say that they like looking at a girl are either pervs or don't get out of their computers and see real women (sorry if i offend someone). One good thing that girls have is that in many games, they have better-looking gear or avatars, sometimes on a girl the gear looks awesome because its more stylish or tigh and on a guy it just makes him look fat because they try to make the character look all big and strong.

Lol, there is a difference between liking something and getting turned on by something. I like how certain of my characters look, I spent a lot of time making them look exactly how I think they should look with both appearance and gear, what sex they have matters little but I kinda feel a bit of pride when I made a character to look exactly that right way.

But the minute I would get turned on by one of them (again male or female, neither is a good sign) it would really be the time to get laid, really.

As for female heroes, I meet this female fighter pilot during my time in the airforce, she were considered slightly insane by the other pilots and Swedish fighter pilots are usually considered pretty insane all of them. I think she actually is the only person I met that really felt like a hero, hard to explain exactly how but she had the same look in her eyes as Bruce Willis had in "Die hard".

There are a few real historical heroes that were ladies too. Bodicea to mention one, she burnt down Londonium and had everyone living there killed. Always be careful when a lady have a spear....

I have never been able to play an elf avatar. Even a female one. They're just too...   well, it's like vampires that sparkle.  They don't work.

Hell yeah I play as a female. Then I try to get other guys to cyber with me and blackmail them after they give me their facebook page. :P

But really, who cares? Most of these games I'm playing while on ventrilo or some other voice thing anyway. I play the hell out of female characters all the time. It's not because I prefer one ass over the other. It's because while I am creating a character, I choose to create whatever I think will be a great character to play.

It's kind of like people getting upset over a male author writing female characters in a fiction book. He has a vision of a character and then makes it a part of whatever story he is writing. I have a vision of a character and make it part of whatever story I am playing.

I  think the only time I have ever playd a female character was way back in Metroid. In mmos I always play as a male and will never play a female. Just a personal preference some of my firends prefer to play female toons but it never sounded appealing to me.

     I don't know? Would you?

Seems to me your comparing clothes that are designed for women and video game characters. I've not heard of a video game character being classified as "women's" video game characters.

Either you're comfortable with playing a female character or you aren't. There really isn't any right or wrong to it.

I'd like to think that most men that play female characters aren't trying to pass themselves off as female players. But you're getting into a whole different story when you discuss the person behind the action.

This will be the last one of these threads I bother to post in (there are like 10 per week across the few mmo-related sites I browse).

Here is the correct answer to this thread:

Yes, I am willing to play a character of the opposite gender and have been known to do so at times.

No one needs to know whether I even have a reason for this beyond basic inclination, nor would they need to know what that reason was if I had one.

The usual dichotomy presented for playing opposite gender characters is a false one (i.e. You either are chauvinistic toward your character, or you have deep seated emotional issues).

TLDR: Yes I will, if I want, and it's no one's business why.

As a guy, no I would never play a female character if given the choice. Mithra like races don't count.

    A few simply reasons:

    1. I never need a kid who sees a female avatar to think it's cool to hit on that female avatar. Especially me.

    2. I use it as an easy representation of who I am in real life, that being, it's a boy. Beyond that - I have no reason for choosing male over female in terms of identity. It removes the question of "Are you a chick?"

    3. Once you put on all the armor, the only difference is the voice, the boobs, and the size. I like mine bigger, in all those categories but since guys have 2 of the bigger options... it's an obvious choice.

I have played female avatars in the past, but I never really gain anything from it as a player. At least with a guy avatar, it's more akin to wearing clothes befitting a guy, rather than you know... "Juicy" across the back of your shorts. If I am going to play games, at the very least I am going to try to immerse myself in them. Women are a daily feature in real life, and 9/10 are more appealing than pixels.

Doesn't bother me. I do not consider my character to be the embodiment of myself in a game. Its just a character.

I tend to make a lot of alts so at least 1 of them will be a woman.  My main is always a man though.

“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

Check out this WoW-based study on this very subject.  There's a good amount of data, analysis and intelligent discussion.    (There are also several other intriguing studies on their site that have been performed over the course of several months).

Im fine with playing both female and male characters..

I dont find them to be an extension of my real life self.I really just do it to mix things up a bit.

When I play as a female char,I dont give them a full on female name either.Alot of times it'll be a name that can go both ways.

  • rsrestonrsreston Member UncommonPosts: 346

Yes, even though being a man, I'd still play female characters in GW2 or in any other MMOG, as I've been doing for years now. BUT as long as the female models and armor are sexy. If not, I'll stick to men.

It's a trend for men to play as females in MMOGs, for that same reason: we'd rather spend ours looking at a female's ass than at a man's. Not all are like that but you can find more info on that - scientific research, actually - googling for the Daedalus Project.

An interesting question would be: would male homossexuals play with female characters, regardless of role-play?

I play mostly male characters, because it's easier to picture myself (if I want to) as being a hero that way since I'm male. Plus, call me old-fashioned, but it bothers me more when my female characters die than my male ones, which is another reason why I just stick to male avi's...

    Gutlard Out!

    What, me worry?

  • DeienDeien Member Posts: 121

Well in gw 1 my first char I lvled was a guy after that was all female why cause they looked good so why not.

  • trembulanttrembulant Member Posts: 101

in most games if  the guy characters look gay or lame, i go with female chacters, but if the game has a cool looking male character to play i will play male, like conan for instance, but usually the male characters are pretty bland or fruity.

besides i rather like female heros in movies and such a hot female who is badass is much more entertaining than a typical male hero type. i think anyone who is strictly male in gmaes and wouldn't play a femal character due to the fact they think people will think they are efeminate or whatever are the ones that may have some security issues, closet tendencies maybe?

I wont read every post. I'm just going to respond to the OP.

I tend to play about a 50/50 mix of female and male toons.

But I like the subculture or ethical divide that you find in the video game community.

I think you can break video game players into two very basic groups.

Group-one) Some people associate with their toon, as in they see it as an extension of themselves.

Group-two) Some people see it as nothing more than a character in a video game.

People from group-one may feel uncomfortable when they learn that the hot blood elf they've been calling sexy and typing /flirt turns out to be a guy. Because they tend to project their view onto other players. i.e he must be gay or a wannabe tranny because he's playing as a girl.

Some of them have a hard time understanding the view of group-two. Not all of them have a hard time, but I think most feel that if youre controling the toon then its acting how youre making it act, so 1+1 makes 2, youre gay.

Group-two people tend to be just as extreme in their view of people from group-one.

i.e. they must be a homofobe or narrow minded, or whatever PC statement that tends to be most popular atm. Because how can they be uncomfortable when they found out it was a guy playing a girl, its just a game, finally youre true colors are showing, you fascist.

I fall in group-two, just not in the extreme version. I understand why some people from group-one get upset, but I still think its silly...it is just a game. *shrug*  :)

The only problem with playing a female toon as a guy I've encountered is being hit on by 14 year olds lol. Due to this I tend to stick to playing male toons and just remember that the "female" I'm grouped with is probably one of the M.any M.en O.nline R.oleplaying G.irls.

  • BelgaraathBelgaraath Member UncommonPosts: 3,205

This is such a funny thread lol. Its 2010, who cares if males play male or female characters in an online game. Most grouping nowadays use vent or some voice interface. When Barbarella speaks and her voice sounds like Michael Jordan, then we know that is most likely a guy. I know straight guys who play male or female and I know gay guys that play male or female. Its a game, do whatever you want.
