I must be a sexist asshole because I pretty much refuse to play a female character in any game. I frequently play League of Legends (DoTA type game) and it has many female characters. I have been playing since beta and to this day I have never played a female one.
Yes, all my characters are female. I'm actually a woman trapped in a man's body. I just cant wait for my waiting period to be over so I can get the surgery finished. Then I'll have to see if there's a way to change my voice so I don't have to use an electronic voice changer in vent.
I will most likely do what I did in GW1; if the male looks ok then I will choose male, but if the male looks like an idiot or is waring a skirt (Im looking at you paragons >_> ) then Im more inclined to choose a girl charector.
Considering the amount of customizablitity for charactors they plan on giving us I dont think this will be much of an issue, so I'll just stick with a male.
I play guys most of the time, like a guy said earlier, i feel more identified with a male character than a female, i don't roleplay or anything but i don't get that feeling of me being a "hero" if my character is a girl. The guys that say that they like looking at a girl are either pervs or don't get out of their computers and see real women (sorry if i offend someone). One good thing that girls have is that in many games, they have better-looking gear or avatars, sometimes on a girl the gear looks awesome because its more stylish or tigh and on a guy it just makes him look fat because they try to make the character look all big and strong.
Lol, there is a difference between liking something and getting turned on by something. I like how certain of my characters look, I spent a lot of time making them look exactly how I think they should look with both appearance and gear, what sex they have matters little but I kinda feel a bit of pride when I made a character to look exactly that right way.
But the minute I would get turned on by one of them (again male or female, neither is a good sign) it would really be the time to get laid, really.
As for female heroes, I meet this female fighter pilot during my time in the airforce, she were considered slightly insane by the other pilots and Swedish fighter pilots are usually considered pretty insane all of them. I think she actually is the only person I met that really felt like a hero, hard to explain exactly how but she had the same look in her eyes as Bruce Willis had in "Die hard".
There are a few real historical heroes that were ladies too. Bodicea to mention one, she burnt down Londonium and had everyone living there killed. Always be careful when a lady have a spear....
i'm Not saying They can't be heros i'm Just saying i don't feel lime one in most mmorpgs, because most of the time They Just try to make them Look weak, and there are games that I do feel like a hero being a woman like in metroid (well you don't even know she's a girl until they tell you xD)
I either use male or female character depending on what I think suits the role best. For example in GW1 I had a Male Warrior, Male Paragon, Male Ranger, Male Dervish. I also had female Mesmer, Monk, elementalist, ritualist, Assassin.
So basically if it relies primarily on brute force I use a male character and if it uses magic and likes stab you in the back it should obviously be a female character.

Jajajaja stabs you in the back, good one. And yeah that's also anther thing, like in rakion the ninja and archer are female and they look better than if a male were any of those classes, because females don't have all hat muscle so they look like they are faster and have more agility
I'm sure this has been discussed, but I'll throw in my 3 cents:
I don't take video games seriously. I don't actually believe that I am a dwarf, or sexy-ninja-ranger, or a demon hunter, etc, in real life. I can separate reality from video games.
I don't believe my pixelated avatar is a representation of me either, in any way shape or form... any more than a character in a book I write, or a character in a movie that I watch.
I don't RP like some people do (in which case playing a female toon might seem slightly strange to some). I just use the character as an interface with the game world.
I'm fairly hetero, and so some eye-candy isn't a bad thing... and the way I've always really felt about it was: I'm a dude, I like girls, so the character would naturally be a girl too. The style of lots of video games is pretty harsh on women these days, and the "chainmail bikini" can get comical at times... but for RPG classes where a female is appropriate, I always choose the female over the male. But while they're sometimes nice to look at, I won't pretend that they turn me on or anything quirky like that... that would be a little extreme.
Good to have everyone's opinion! I think it's fair to play any gender virtually as long as you don't pretend to be something you aren't in real life. It's just for the style and character look in-game right?
Typically I just sit out and watch but for this I thought I might just sign in and give my two cents.
My friend is openly gay and he use to play only female characters so that kind of made it weird for me but I knew plenty of more manly men who would play females to so I never considered it to be that weird.
In WoW I have all male mains however my banker is a sexy little blood elf that I have in a very skimpy outfit. Of course this is just my banker and fun eye candy when I am working with that end of the game. I will probably eventually get Cataclysm and will roll a female goblin to level up. Why? I think the female goblins are just awesome looking.
As far as GW2 goes I love the way female Norn look but I want to play a charcter with a big hairy beard. So maybe if they give the females a bearded option you might find me playing one but I have a feeling that is unlikely.
Meh, never have and never will play a female character. Just not my thing. Just play what you want and don't worry about what anyone else says. I generally won't throw my two cents in unless I hear some asinine comment like "Well, if I have to stare at someones ass all day it might as well be a females" and other such garbage lol. They're just toons for crying out loud lol.
I still don't understand why people even question this but....for conversations sake...
I'm an RPer...I enjoy to RP and I RP female characters just as often as male characters.....I'm not into ERP regardless so it makes no diff to me......I think it's fun to play as kickass female chars as well as it being fun to play as emotional wreck males.
PLAYING: NOTHING!!! PLAYED:FFXI, LotRO, AoC, WAR, DDO, Megaten, Wurm, Rohan, Mabinogi, RoM
I can't think of any good reason I wouldn't, but I haven't. I'm tempted to say that I simply identify with male characters better because I'm male, but that kind of flies in the face of the fact that I tend to play non-humans whenever possible, so who knows?
I can very certainly say, though, that I'm an exception to Raph Koster's quote from Avatars Offline:
'Not only does it matter, but it appears to be hard-wired into the human brain that we must know the gender of whom we are talking to.'—Raph Koster
That is simply not so, with me. I've never asked, and when offered the information, I have tended to forget.

It's my experience that this excuse only comes from homophobes. They are scared that being a known 'mangina' will make them gay in the minds of others, so they try to turn it into something macho and lecherous. It's hilarious.

Exactly!
I play RP both too. Every character I make in any game is built in my head before they are ever made in the game. I decide on a name and from there I build the persona and history. If that name/persona happen to fit a female more than a male then I make a female character. And once the character is made I usually stick with it from that point forward in thier life. If I want to play a different persona I make an alt. Each character is its own entity to me, and while I am playing them I try and stay true to that.
That being said, I never attempt to hide the fact that a man is playing behind the keys of a female character if someone asks. But, if they dont ask, I dont tell either. I'd prefer they looked at each of my characters for what they are, individual characters. I dont actually like having people link my alts together since I normally dont in thier lives. They may know of each other, or have business with them, but thats about it. And having other players remove the persona, referring to every one of my alts as me, well thats just not the point of an RPG to me. If I want to play me I'd get out of the office chair and go play me, I dont need a game for that.

notice how it's role playing, so for all the guys who play female character, you're not happy of your own gender in rl so you play a female in a rpg to satisfy yourself.

Apparently 90% of players aren't happy with their species either, or so it would seem.
There are times when a developer makes the female versions of their characters so enticing, I have, I'll admit, made one or two just to sit and stare at them...../drool.
BUT...
Once waaay back during SWG days (beta, then release) I did in fact play a female toon as a dancer, for kinda the same reason and she was also a miner/artisan. I had a really fun time playing her and crafting seriously cool stuff.
I did though feel weirded out when approached by male toons in the game who were straight crazy rude and disgusting in their words and at times actions. (I just never had those bones or tendencies, and have always had my fair share of action) . I'm extremely liberal, but there was one point it was way out of hand, and I swore off playing female toons after that. (other than creation and staring at the dev's work in the newbie zones).
I give women who play female toons alot of credit for dealing with many of the guys (well who knows if they are male) in MMOs, and in real life, lol.
Some people say that it's very bizzare to play as another sex in an online game, do you think it's simply fun and for the look, do people take this too seriously, or is it linked to an identity problem?
whoever said that has some problem
i play female and male chars, and i am quite certain about my sex. no problems or personalitysplices here.... at least no major ones :>
started roleplaying at the age of 12 (pen and paper roleplaying games, not the pervi ones hehe), my first female char even was married to one of my friends chars those days ^^
not weirder than slaying dragons, basilisks and saving virgins, is it?
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"
I like playing male characters myself being male, but have no problem at all with ppl who play opposite sex characters than they are irl. Ofc saying that u r female when u r male is whole other thing...
The only ones who find it "bizarre" to play a character of the opposite gender are adolescents, who still suffer from certain insecurities that come with this age. For everyone else there is nothing to talk about here really.

I play female chars always, i like wachting at the female toon, even if it's just pixelated. Maybe I have some kind of mind problem, but I dont care.

That's so narrow minded it's beyond belief. ANYONE BEYOND THIS MARKER HAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THEM!
No, I just don't identify with a female character, just like you PROBABLY don't watch certain television shows because you can't identify with it. I totally know the kind of man I want to be, so it's easy to project that into a fantasy setting as something glorified and amazing. I don't want to be a woman, simply because I can't imagine an interesting female character; it's not my mindset. I'm sure there's plenty of females who feel the same way...
...and they're not INSECURE for it, they just might identify with a character more like themselves.
