I personally am more excited about this announcement than anything else on the horizon. I blew a lot of time when I was young on the Tribes titles, being able to play again with updated graphics in an MMO setting? Oh god, my wife would hate it.

I don't doubt that tribes was good, but it was littered with far too many bugs in the 90s that many people left the game and many of the tournament leagues took that game out fast. During the late 90s, most of the shooters in play replaced all the others in a display of near-total dominance.

By the end of the 90s it was Counter-Strike, Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 Arena that were everywhere. Tribes was pretty much forgotten, Not talked about....etc.

If tribes returns without all the bugs and problems it had back then....it can be good again.

Tribes 1 died because Dynamix was killed off by Sierra OL, and there was no protection from the cheats in the leagues anymore. Not because of those other (simpler) games.

TribalWar.com is still going strong to this day. I always considered the "clans" of Quake/UT/CS to be the "script kiddies" of the FPS world.

    Great News!

Starsiege: Tribes was my 1st FPS game, definitely going to keep my eye on this and may have to look more into GA now.

    Thanks for the heads up!

Tribes 2 got me into the online gaming world, I played that game religiously until Dynamix got sacked and thrown away by Sierra.  I am very happy to see this IP getting picked up, and I've played Global Agenda to 50 on two toons, and it already felt very close to the homefront of the tribes scene. I know Hi-Rez is the company to pull this off, I hope they can get some input from former dev's of the original games.

Make it GA2 and furthermore the spiritual successor to PlanetSide.

Oh hey kinda sounds like Planetside.

Planetside and Starsiege: Tribes are my two favourite games, and now you're telling me they're making a game inspired by both of them?

LOL I know.  Who would possibly want a game developed by a startup company that blew away everyone's expectations and made a game that consistantly gets better and has almost nothing but positive reviews.

The dev's that made APB would be MUCH better suited considering the TREMENDOUS success of that game.  Oh... wait

I'm worried about this game. Why? Frankly, I'm worried because they're going to turn Tribes into an MMO. A MASSIVE part of what made Tribes so popular was the fact that it was incredibly easy to mod. The map editor wasn't terribly hard to use, though it was incredibly buggy, and everyone had access to it because it was built right into the game.

An MMO implies a sort of rigidity that the Tribes universe hadn't actually seen until Vengeance came out. Vengeance could have been a good game, but the ability to mod it was completely gutted at the last minute. The community wasn't able to do anything with the game... which is why far more people still play the first two games compared to Vengeance.

So yeah, while I'm hoping for the best on this, I'm not really expecting the second coming of Tribes.

Jesus Hi-Rez is gonna totally MURDER Tribes... After global agenda i have no hopes... at all !

I have yet to play any FPS that meets T2's features and abilities. Custom loadouts, jetpacks, skins, scripting support, vehicles, deployable assets.

I can't remember the name, but I remember one script pack that had deployable forcefields, walls, and turrets.... that one was the best!

    Vengeance sucked compared to T2

Insomniax was the script pack. It included alot of really cool items like deployable rocket turrets, Shotgun, Rocket Launcher (w/ target lock, if your aim was quick and dead on) , Phalanx machine gun. Emp grenade launcher.

Skiing was/is definately one of the skills in the Tribes series that it was recommended that you at least have a basic competance in.   That, and the use of your powered armor jetpack...  For the players in the light armors speed and maneuverability were essential to their survival and ability to capture the flag and get home alive (more or less) with it, or to defend against other players from the opposing team trying to wreck your base and steal your hanky.  Larger armors like the medium and heavy classes carried more weapons, could haul bigger pieces of gear and base equipment around, and - in the case of the heavy - could carry the destructive mortar rifle as well as taking more punishment at the coat of speed and maneuvrability.

although counters for the bigger armor by light players were developed, like throwing a land mine at them and firing a disc launcher shot right behind, using the combined explosive power of both weapons to seriously mess up or kill anything up to a heavy.

but one of the beauties of Tribes is that it was a teamwork game that had a role for everyone if they put their minds to it.  For example my fiancee gets motion sickness in a turning fight, so she couldnt handle a typical tribes outdoor combat, so we trained her tsuit up in medium armor to keep the base iup and running, to lay out remote gun turrets, land mines, sensor equipment, inventories and the like (or what is commonly called the 'turret farmer', 'farmer', or 'turret bunny')   Oddly enough, she doesnt have any motion sickness problems as long as she doesnt have to use her jetpacks, and she knows the base layouts like the back of her hand - so she capped more than her fair share of players who decided to pay our base a visit and met her in the hallways.  Its not glamorous, and sometimes players deride that kind of position on the team, but a good farmer keeps their mind on their job because they are often the support network for the team, and teamwork wins matches.

In my case I'm kinda old at 41, my reflexes are not nearly as fast as the players in the lighter armors, so I play heavy with the job of pounding the opposing base and players into dog food with the mortar, grenades, and anything else i bring along with me, and dusting the enemy base is a great help in winning a match by keeping the opposing team off balance and unable to grab better gear (or, they so have their attention on getting you dislodged from their base their that they forget about defending the flag..)  Like my fiancee, I also do turret farmer duties, since it helps me keep the layouts of the bases that I often have to destroy in mind, and it helps our team when I do my farmer john bit.

The point of this is that Tribes has always been a game with  a role for many kinds of players and many styles of play, so I would hope that an MMO would keep this aspect and the teamwork aspects alive.

Seriously, do people even read the news releases?

    http://forum.globalagendagame.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=27767

Seriously, please read it, it gives good insight, and well, then I won't have to waste my time reading posts like "please don't make it into a MMO!" or "Is it Global Agenda 2?"

I mean come on.  Simple google search even if you didn't play GA would show that post.

Tribes was the defining FPS for me long long ago.  The use of jetpacks making combat less 2D as it were, was strategic and I liked that.  Much like how ShadowRun FPS was.  As horrible the use of the IP was, the combat was very innovative, and stil has one of the better intros that I can remember, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErVyG19vnfo

I do hope that Tribes gets revitalized with this and they do it well.  And yes, the disc launcher was the greatest weapon.

Very excited by this news, especially as Planetside is one of the main inspirations for the game; its my all time favourite MMO for a whole slew of reasons.

I have played all three PC tribes titles and enjoyed them all to differing degrees (T2 the most admittably).  I have looked around the net at various Tribes websites I see huge amounts of bitterness towards not only T:V which seemingly flopped (good review scores though) but also towards both T1 and T2 in differing amounts.

HiRez did a good job of making a game out of GA (its not an MMO by my standards though) and I am hopeful they will do a decent job of making the Unreal engine work with large scale battles.  My gaming community is going to be keeping a close eye on it; PS is where we started and large scale tactical PvP twitch gameplay is what we love.  Reading through that feature list and you could have PS right there, and with the addition of the tribes universe with its jetpacks and HERCs, it could be amazing.

Anyone interested in setting up a fansite?

Tribes 2. Wow. Its my first online game ever too. I was addicted to it for 2 straight years until they canned Dynamix (they moved on to developed Planetside...If i remembered correctly; which I was also addicted to it for several years to followed). I loved team base game. Anyways...for those that have never played Tribes 2, here are some clips for you to get an idea of what it was like.

I was one of the most die hard Tribes players and fan, I can think of only about 5 games in the last 15 years of gamining that really and truly struck a cord with me, games that I could never get enough of.....Tribes was one of them, I really hope it turns out well, I even mentioned on Global Agenda's player surveys "Old games like Tribes was free to play and much better, common guys you can do alot better"

    This has made my day!!!

  • Matticus75Matticus75 Member UncommonPosts: 396

In fact what is funny, when I posted my last comment, I have my Tribes 2 CD on top of my computer, I pulled it out a few day ago.........lol

  • Jairoe03Jairoe03 Member Posts: 732

Yeah include me as part of the group that used to play Tribes 2 on a regular basis. That game was great on so many levels and sad to see none of it evolved or built upon, just forgotten amongst the Halos and Counter-Strikes that followed it (well think Counter Strike came along side it but you know what I mean).

Being able to fit out different armor sets specific to the roles that are no longer available to me in todays shooters has me reminiscing of the days of setting up whole defense networks around generators and flags to protect (and sometimes attack) bases. These days the closest thing I have is Team Fortress and Engies only can lay out 1 turret (boooo..).

I too love Tribes 1 & 2 they were trend setting for FPS games, though seeming gone un-noticed and forgotten about.  I remember Variant MOD, you could deploy mobile force fields, shock fields, many varieties of turrets, even a deployable mobile base that came complete with a round ceiling and force fields for walls with the Invo station inside of it, one only needed to place a force field at the doorway to stay relatively protected inside.

I Love those days and you still can too.  I recently found a gem of a website that has given new life to Tribes 2 and it's called TRIBES NEXT.    http://www.tribesnext.com/   It is completely FREE and easy to download and setup with only the one patch to run, which configures the game to run with the new user created Hosting Server Databases.  If you are an old player from back in the day, I highly recommend looking into Tribes Next, all of the favorite popular servers have been revived and it's like Tribes 2 never really died.  So get your FREE copy of Tribes Next today and get back into the Tribes scene.

I played Tribes 2, the Renegades Mod, for a good while.  It was some of the most FUN I've had online.

It wasn't just the pew-pew factor either.  It was all the tactical options, landmines, deployable turrets and radar, stealth and motion detectors.  The ability to engage in offense as well as setup creative defensive emplacements.  Raw, face forward and face paced nukage or stealthy stalking and a long-range pop with a Rail-gun to the head!

Thanks for the info.  The prospect of a potential revival is a smiley.

Wherever you go, there you are.
