Same could be said about a themepark, but hey both have their drawbacks and both have their enjoyment players find worth playing.
I would love it if Blizzard would make a sandbox mmo. They are one of the few Devs out there that could do it right imo. I am not a huge WoW fan but that doesn't mean I haven't played it or appreciate it's polish. If only other Devs out there could polish their games as well.
What if they did make a sandbox mmo? Would it be any good?
probably. they're an excellent developer and most of their games are quite good.
Would their be any themepark elements in it as well?
probably. the only fully sandbox MMO is maybe second life, everything else that referred to as "sandbox" is still in part themepark. just like every themepark is in part sandbox, it's just the degree that varies.
If it was a huge hit would that cause other developers to persue a sandbox style game?
yes, but that has nothing to do with blizzard or sandbox. any huge hit would inspire immitation.
Would they rip off some of minecrafts uberness even though they're probably well into its development cycle?
no idea, i don't know what minecraft is.
Would it quiet Blizzard naysayers at all?
if it was popular? no. if it was good? yes. if it was both? probably
What kind of design do you think they would use?
Blizzard tends to "go big or go home", so my guess is they would use one of their 3 key franchises. Sci-Fi games lend themselves better to sandbox, so Starcraft Online would be my guess. Though possibly the'd create some kind of sandbox add-on to WoW meant to appeal to additional market. It can go a lot of ways. I honestly don't see why McDonald's (blizzard) would suddenly jump into the Fine Restaurant (Sandbox Games) market. It just doesn't make any kind of business sense. They are really good at making big, simple games for the masses. They make tons of money doing it. Why change that?

In all honesty.. I don't think Blizzard has the brain power to understand what a sandbox is... Sandbox games target the social player.. and from what I've witnessed by Blizzard, is their lack of understanding what social is all about.. LFD option is NOT a social tool.. Being social is more then clicking on an "accept" box to a group that kills a group of mobs that takes 15 minutes then disband.. Here's hoping that one day a good sandbox, or social themepark comes to light..
Obviously blizzard understands the themepark market far better than anyone else does, so I suspect they would understand fun gameplay through a sandbox game if they so desired to make one. It is pretty much what they do when they set out to make a game.
You are complaining that the looking for dungeon tool isn't as if that proves blizzard couldn't possibly understand a sandbox game when that was never the intention of the tools design. The LFD tool wasn't designed to attract sandbox players or build communities right. It was designed to get players together who do not know each other and allow them quick access to dungeons. It achieved that in spades and resolved a problem players were experiencing. A problem that players in other games have expressed interest in blizzard solution. Anyhow, players can still join random groups on their server if they wish and it happens all day long.
By your line of logic we might as well say blizzard doesn't understand starship combat, because goblin rockets can't fly into space.
I'm sure if any company could do it would be blizzard. Can honestly say I can't think of a game they made that isn't worth the money(that I've played anyway).
However with the unmatched success of WoW you can't fight the fact that themeparks sell better. Sure true mmo lovers may not feel they are as good but the masses out way the passionate few when it comes to making money.

True, but the sandbox group would say that the reason themeparks sell better is because no one has done a AAA sandbox with a big budget. Which is why alot of posts on this thread are positive towards the idea. As am i. Though the sad reality is that it isnt likely to come from Blizzard. But you never know.
Theres been alot of great discussion on this thread, and since i rarely post a thread and usually stick to replys, id like to thank everyone for their replys. It was something i thought needed to be asked. And im surprised at the amount of responses. Its been a great read! Hopefully theres still more opinions on this subject out there though!
