FF2 = Kain/Cecil/Rydia etc etc? That's FF4 =p
But agreed, that was indeed the golden age. Go ahead and add Final Fantasy Tactics, Chrono Cross, and Super Mario RPG to that list...
I don't know what happened either, I've technically beaten all the FF games up until 13... because I got 30 hours into it and still didn't really care about the characters. Especially Snow...
Square needs to look back into the past and understand that great characters and a tailored to match storyline is what makes games great, not the amount of cosplayness in your games.
They need to convince Hironobu Sakaguchi to come back and get the franchise back on track again. Snowball's chance in hell that would ever happen, though, I think.
I honestly, and without exaggeration or hyperbole, believe that in his absence, the remaining devs have forgotten what makes a FF game a FF game. They've lost the "soul" of what - to me - characterizes a FF game.

remakes won't solve anything. unforutnate but true. if they cut down ffxiv because of the bashing (because that is a huge factor on mmo's these days) a punkass idiot looking it up at a forum maybe this one getting the idea this game is no fun at all. maybe he bought it already and now is pissede off. a lot of shareholders seems to be absolute hateful for SE atm so no wonder the big losses.
if SE drops support on ffxiv and closes down server that's when i decide to never buy a SE game again. going out with their usual method failing and then say: ok we back up we have no chance against those flaming Us-idiots. (and by that i mean some certain people including that one opening those nice informations about how bad this game fails and what doom it brings to SE. don't care bout the name of that sucker though).
if they really back down and crawl to all of the fans.... then what? they make a ff7 rerelease? come on don't be so stupid to recognize that ff7 was awesome at it's time and it still has his charme but that's it. it wasnt something totally unusual. and for today it would seems like a typical story everone tells in games these days.
if a ff7 rerelease comes out with new graphics that's when SE goes bankrupt.
Uh... yeah, you take forums entirely too seriously man. Most people don't bother reading forums before making a game purchase, and anyone who does is jaded enough to know that whining on forums is just par for the course. Seriously, I'd say the effect the forums had on FFXIV's sales was miniscule at best. Ya know what did have a big role in it though? It being a terrible game. I had a chance to give the beta a shot right before launch, and I really, really wanted to like it. But you know what? The game ran so poorly on my PC (which is easily powerful enough to run any other MMO out there at mid-high graphics) that I just couldn't do it. I'm talking 10-15FPS, and my attempts to scale the graphics settings down was met with absolutely minimal options, which provided no noticeable difference.
That would be why I didn't buy FFXIV, and I'm sure everyone else out there had their own reasons for it. I don't know whether Squeenix made the right call by releasing FFXIV when they did or not. Whether they couldn't afford to spend more money on the title, felt it would make more if released before the rest of the next season of MMOs, or it was a doomed project and they wanted to get as much of their money out of it as possible before people realised it, the fact of the matter is that it failed. Horribly. Lesser of two evils or not, it's still not good.

I just got done playing Parasite Eve and while the graphics are way out dated the game was still hella fun. Now take the game leave everything the same but with better graphics, IMO it would make it a more enjoyable game, maybe not better though.
IMO i think any game that has the graphics updated but everything else is exactly same would be more enjoyable. I can say I'm a bit of a graphics whore, but I'll sacrifice some eyecandy for better gameplay. But if you can pull off both why not do just that.
Agree with everything here except that FFXI was square enix and was their best game to me. I still say FFXI is best mmorpg ever made no matter what, played 6 years and loved it. FFXIV was my hope to play many years an mmorpg again but I was wrong
I agree totally and feel the same way.I know it sounds dumb but we can sort of blame Wow,well not Blizz or Wow but the mindless dummies who support Wow.I am sure everyone agrees that Wow's success has all these devs thinking, that just maybe they should steal an idea or two from Wow to garner more subs.HUGE mistake.
I think the biggest problem with Square is they are getting greedy, they are trying to whip out games and recover cost much faster, without putting in the effort.FFXI's design took a ton of effrot i can see it in every part of the game.
I think Tanaka put so much of his life and effort into FXi,that he grew tired and wants a break,he wants to sit back now and collect the huge salary.Tanaka let some bumling idiots design FFXIV,Square will never live this down and i still doubt that tanaka wants to spend so mcuh time of his life to once again design something as big as FFXI was.The only way Square could rebound is to hire or put in charge some better people that know how to be creative and think for themselves without copying from other ideas, this may take a very long time.
How much creativity have we seen in the other two camps...SOE and Blizz?absolutely NONE,they do nothing but create the same old over and over again,so it really seems that it will take a very long time before we again get some creative mind or minds to make us a game, the way Tanaka did with FFXi,a game that btw also showed poor direction since TOAU,so this Sqaure debacle has been a long time coming.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Thanks to the OP for the article, It explains why FFXIV was released before it was ready. SE knew they were going to be reporting a 75% fall in revenue for the first half of the year and therefore had to release the game they hoped would bring in substantial additional revenue in order to turn things around and reassure their investors. In the event they misjudged it and 630,000 global sales isn't what they were expecting, I'm sure of that.
Let no-one believe for a moment that the timing of any computer game release is based around the notion of "when it is ready". Some companies have a better record than others when it comes to getting new releases into a fit state before they're required to be launched, but all games are released when the accountants say they have to be, and not a day later. That's clearly what happened here.
Honestly, I don' think the PS3 version is going to be very successful; I don't see it doing much to help out SE financially. The PC crowd is much more geared towards MMO's and FF14 wasn't that well received in the PC/MMO crowd. The console gaming crowd is not that familiar with MMO's and I don't see a very unimmersive and unintuitive game like FF14 appealing to the console oriented players.
I am going to agree with Zookz1 in that I didn't really think FF7 was all that great of a game in comparison to earlier Final Fantasy games. It rode too much on "newness" of being one of the earlier games that moved from 2D to 3D; I did enjoy FF8 a good deal. I played the next FF game after FF8 and didn't like it at all, it was forgettable enough to me that I can't remember the name. I quit playing FF games after that one and recently tried out FF14 because it is an MMO (one of my two favorite genres) and it looked like it had great visuals so I thought the game might be good overall...hated it.
So back to my original thoughts...yeah, I predict that the PS3 version of FF14 will sell less than the PC version.

Initially, I would have disagreed with this because it seems to me that FFXI did fairly well on the XBOX 360 and PS2. However, with the amount of bad media exposure this game has received there is a good chance that it will have an effect on how FFXIV does on the PS3 now.

I would love to play the real second half of Xenogears where it is obvious they had to cut the game short and use monologues about what is going on by the characters sitting in a chair.
Then again, I see your point about letting the new guys touch the old stuff.
FFXIV was going to fill a gap in my MMO line up until DCUO (which was previously scheduled for X-Mas '10). I played the beta. After having Beta'd MANY MMO's, I did not take the "It's a beta, they'll fix it" approach. I thought that with Matrix, I thought that with Horizons, I thought that with CO, I thought that with STO. I'm not falling for it anymore.
Here's my opinion: Any game that comes out doesn't need to be huge but there needs to be plenty to do. It's EASY to add on lands and items. It's NOT easy to launch with NO real objectives and NO real sense of community. If a MMO launches, I expect roughly 30-40 hrs of MAIN questline. 15-20 seems to be the norm for a console game, 20-30 for a RPG, I expect slightly more. Let's be honest, 9/10ths of your quests will be Fed-Ex or Go-Kills. These are BASE requirements. This doesn't even delve into the IMO necessary RvR or PvP. This doesn't include end-game content. Frankly if you rush to end-game you deserve to sit there for a while. Next time you'll read the freakin quests and lore.
Right now, I have Cat (yes, going to TRY it atleast), then DCUO. FFXIV PS3 launch MAY get my attention but they need to fix it ALL. They changed a bunch with FFXI so I have hope but there's SOOOOOOO much missing in the disaster that was FFXIV.
I never want ANY MMO to fail. I think a LOT of them have their own reasons for existence and having a good selection is better than almost none. Just do it right. There are BASIC rules for a launch and if you fail to pay attention to them (and your community) then this is what happens.

there is no close shop time happening anytime soon :P wow would be the last game to cause that also lol....

I know I didn't. Even if I decide to never play this game I still wanted it to be a game to reckon with if nothing else to push games I am playing to try and compete by trying harder to develop content and innovate more in order to stay competitive.
All this shit did was have them breathe a sigh of relief and say, "One down, two to go." Doesn't benefit anyone far as I'm concerned except in an odd way possibly those associated with FFXI because I would imagine maybe some headed back to that game to get their FF fix.

When will they learn that the final fantasy franchise (spelling?) aren't mmo material? Ofc they want a wow success but they will not get it with such a slow pace game. Focus on other games that are not for the mmo genre perhaps? Someone ougth to tell them that no one will pay a montly fee for a game that sucks in multiplayer. I, for one, want to control my whole team and give them commands in any given fight, I dont want to depend on someone else at all times.
Keep the Final Fantasy games in singleplayer and take some other game and make it MMO if its subscribers they want. Hell buy the wow engine off blizzard and moogle it.

I'd say Final Fantasy does have some unique obstacles to overcome in order to make it a MMO, but XI was pretty darn good when it released in NA, and that was after a year overseas. I'm not sure if anybody knows exactly what SquareEnix was shooting for, not even them, but we can all tell what they shot.

when they decided to get rid of Hironobu Sakaguchi the father of final fantasy and then merge with Enix who made shitty rpgs from the first place, I dont care dragonquest was lame and that was enix's best rpg or something.

1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
I knew a few people that were waiting for FFXIV and then were disappointed. They went back to XI and said they'd never play XIV again. :

i have roms of those games. i wouldn't trade hard-drive space of those games for anything that's currently out.

I think FFXI turned out to be a pretty good MMO.
when they decided to get rid of Hironobu Sakaguchi the father of final fantasy and then merge with Enix who made shitty rpgs from the first place, I dont care dragonquest was lame and that was enix's best rpg or something.
