If you think 'grind' = hardcore, then theres ONE king of hardcore; World of Warcraft! Try do all the achievements there. Then come back and tell us how "easy" that was...

The most hardcore game I have played would be Anarchy Online. If you had a no-brain, you would be gone almost the same moment you logged in due to it's incredible advanced gameplay/character development. Back in it's beginning we used to raid/get xp for 3 hrs, then we used to twink for 3 days... rinse & repeat. True story.

Most other games I have played is definately on autorun compared to Anarchy Online.

Make us care MORE about our faction & world pvp!

Did u play UO pre-trammel in late 90's?

    I smell carebearisme miles away.

Grind is 'not' hardcore - it's an annoying method game companies use these days to keep PvE subscribers.

The harder grind to reach the endgame = more $ for the company.

Instead of in-depth character/avatar customization, content, balance game play, lore - they sometimes focus on wrong areas in their games, unfortunately.

Regardless of what you think of grind, the inclusion of a heavy grind does make a game more hardcore as it introduces a mechanic that has to be surmounted in order to progress.

so sure, if there is a huge grind but no death penalty and one rarely dies, then that's not very hardcore. But a game that has players take a year to level is sill pretty hardcore over a game where one levels every day. It might not be difficult to do as far as the skill involves but it does introduce a difficult barrier to overcome.

I'd have to also say EVE.  I think I had a heart attack yesterday when some punk caught me mining in the wrong place.  I didn't really feel like losing my ship and everything in it.

UO was not my cup of tea, but definately a game I would define 'hardcore' if the descriptions I've heard & read is correct. Please explain what you mean with "carebearisme". Are you accusing me for being a carebear by me saying that if grind = hardcore, then theres one king, World of Warcraft?

Of all games I have played, none, and I mean none, comes even close to how complex and in depth the customization of your class was, and still is, in Anarchy Online. If you spend your IP's wrong, you would definately totallymess up your toon. In mno other game I have played, I have even been near to hopw much work and knowledge I had to put into my class as I have to do in AO. It is a massive beast in that very department. Definately 'hardcore'. If you died in PvP, you also might loose tons of xp, which in many time meant hrs of gaming. Unless you had 'insured' your toon.

I do not rate 'permadeath' or the ability to loot players corpses as 'hardcore'; thats just grief.

Hello Kitty Online, it takes some stones to tell people you play that. Well, and not be a 13 year old girl that is.

Sorry I don't get the whole "hardcore Game" to me any game can be played hardcore or casual as I see it as a playstyle a person might have.

I can not consider steep learning curves to be hardcore.

To me harcore is about how one may play a game, the more one challenges him or herself, the more dedication towards the game, knowing the ins and outs of the game pure by playing it is what I will consider hardcore.

Darkfall is the most hardcore PVE game I have played.

  • rmasonrmason Member Posts: 140

I will even laugh as I post this buy Uncharted Waters Online is the most hardcore MMO I have played aside from pre-tram UO. It has the PVE grind of Everquest, the skill system of UO but longer to advance, has open pvp areas where if you get killed you lose all your $ and a decent portion of your items and if you are a "red named" you lose ALL your money, even the money in your bank. The travel takes forever as it is a historical 1500's nautical game. Sailing from London to Seville takes about 15-30 minutes depending on the winds, boat, if you get ambushed by pirates, stop at ports, etc.

Leveling is painfully slow, acquiring money is even more painful, and FFA pvp on all servers to my knowledge. Additionally, you have a chance of dropping a random item, and you lose a decent percentage of exp on death.

If you want to make the game even more hardcore try to play all the way through as a dwarf. The money grind won't be as painful, but level grinding will be even worse.

you dont drop item now unless your karma is 5 and above.

You use to back in C1, C2 days if a mob got you you had a random chance to drop items.  I remember dropping my Blue Wolf pants because we were deep in a cata and got overwhelmed by mobs...thank god i had a good clan that helped me get them back from inside the cata.

L2 has to be the most hardcore.  Every week going to castle seiges and losing XP to try and take a castle for your alliance.  There were some seiges that people lost an entire level and it was common to lose 10-20% of a level if not a lot more just for a castle seige.  Good times that game was.

Hardcore MMO ... now thats a good question ... I would figure its probably one of the smaller ones.

Vanguard, I dunno. Vanguard had some insanely hard mobs. The times I tried to kill Akande, ugh. Theres also some crazy hard raid bosses. Never had a chance with those - you need a real hardcore guild for those.

P.s.: Cute, I'm at Posting 999 now hehe.

    It's even a double-necro.

First post on 1/14/08, then the thread went asleep and someone necroed it with post #51 on 8/26/09, thread went asleep again and recently got re-necroed. Good show! :)

As to the original question: there's nothing hardcore in playing a game. Nothing.

I maintain this List of Sandbox MMORPGs. Please post or send PM for corrections and suggestions.

well i will have to say Mortal is the hardest hardcore game i have played and i have played eve Mortal  is very hardcore

  • ThekandyThekandy Member Posts: 621

As long as there is no clear consensus on what "Hardcore" actually means it's an impossible question all boiling down to opinion.

  • bstrippbstripp Member Posts: 241

Totally seconded, or thirded, or whatever.

There is no such thing as a hardcore MMO.

    MMO = time = advancement.

Nothing in there is anything to do with hardcore at all.

Fun, well sure, or I wouldn't play them.  However, not hardcore.

  • emikochanemikochan Member UncommonPosts: 290

was gonna say EVE (when played properly :p) but reading about all this L2 stuff (and trying it once and failing out of the gate)

L2 gets the crown imo, for the biggest combination of hardcore elements, some games beat it in areas, but damn it's brutal when it wants to be...
