If the Mmorpg genre makes you unhappy why do you stay?

These are games no? Created to entertain right? If the genre of mmorpg makes you unhappy then why do you stick around? From what I've seen people dislike the way the genre has evolved ( or de-evolved) over the years yet continuously torture themselves by trying new games that all share the same core mechanics that they dislike. So I ask why bother? Why are you here? Why not just play something else or switch hobbies?

In my view, its not the genre people are unhappy with, its the sub-standard games that are being published. People have every right to complain about something theyve spent money on and are unhappy about.

    Masochistic tendencies?

I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil

Cause mmorpg are more addicted then drugs, who said drugs make you happy? They become needed so happy or not you have to get your dose.

I like the genre.  I am absolutely enthralled with the possibilities of the genre, by things I've seen glimpses of in the games I've played.

Am I disappointed in the state of the genre today as represented by the games?  Absolutely.  Even though I have been playing (and having fun in) EQ2 for 6 years, overall, I still think it's a pretty bad game compared to what's possible.  But I still enjoy it on some level.  At the end of the day MMORPGs are the only genre that gives you another world co-inhabited and co-experiences with others.

I guess to me, MMOs are like sex and pizza - when it's good, it's good, when it's bad, it's still pretty good.

Because this genre has infinite potential.  This is really the only genre that has the ability to create games with endless amount of social interaction, exploration, pvp, pve, and any other category that describes a game of any genre.  Any other genre chooses a few of the categories, such as RPG chooses PVE and exploration, FPS chooses PVP and shitty social interaction, MMO chooses all of them.

It would just be nice if they stopped skimping out on exploration, pvp, and pve.  By default social interaction will always be good, unless you're playing with a bunch of 12 year olds.

Edit: Forgot to mention that MMO has created categories as well, any other genre it would be impossible to have an economy.

i am one of these guys, which are sad about where this genre did go. nevertheless, after i quit EVE a year ago, i am monitoring the market and looking for a good game. its easy to avoid the real bad stuff, with all the information available these days. and a few days in an open beta or trial gives you pretty soon an impression, if the better looking games are worth to play or even to pay or not.

i did not give up hope, that we will see a good game anytime. Darkfall and Mortal Online have been promising, but made some other fundamental mistakes. others like Worm Online or Minecraft are too rough for me. and some are not ready to go like Dawntide, Xsyon or ArchAge.

i doubt, that any story-driven, quest-centric game will attract me. but i will have a look at TERA, RIFT, SWTOR and GW2. the better theme-parks are sometimes at least a bit funny  for a few weeks. however, i keep waiting. i am convinced that the professional sandbox MMO is not dead.

There are still a few hidden gems out there. You just have to really look for them now that the mmorpg market has over saturated by clones, heavily instanced, and shallow mmos.

I am not unhappy about the genre, I am unhappy with what it is turning into.

yeah, sorry. i mixed that up unfortunately. actually there have been discussions about a minecraft based mmo. minecraft is just a perfect example for too much sand in the box. ;)

There used to be a take-away near me that did this mean ass chilli burger sadly they got bought out ingredients changed and it went down hill,  for the last 10 years I've tried the chili burger at every new establishment that has opened and none have quite hit the same mark,  it won't stop me trying every new place that opens in the hope one does meet that standard.

MMO's are no different I expereinced a great MMO or 2 in the genres infancy before visionaries stagnated and before communities turned to crap no other game, hobby or anything has provided me with the fun and value for money those early MMO's did,  that solely is why I continue to try them in the slim hope that one day I find that MMO that brings me that same fun and value.

We're hoping and praying for what was good about MMORPGs to someday return, and finding vestiges of it where we can. Currently Darkfall is the closest thing to a real MMO I've played in ages.

MMORPG's just have so much potential, all I'm doing is waiting around for that potential to be reached. I play no MMO at present as they're all very disappointing, but know that one day some company is going to develop one that'll blow my mind. Until then I'll keep waiting.

I suspect that, like me, many of the people here do play something else or nothing at all but still visit the boards to discuss the genre and look if there's any hope left for it.

For example, me, the last MMORPG I bought at release was Ryzom back in the pre-WoW days. After Ryzom I played about a year LotRO and a few months of PotBS, neither of them at release though. That's it, I passed all the other offerings but I'm still reading this website and posting something so now and then. :)

Looks like the companies don't want my money.

I maintain this List of Sandbox MMORPGs. Please post or send PM for corrections and suggestions.

It's not the genre, it's the poor quality MMOs.

I love the genre of MMO. The concept of participating with other players around the world in a virtual world. Problem is, all of the MMOs bungle the core MMO concept these days.

I don't play MMOs that I don't have fun in, but that doesn't stop me from hoping and asking for an MMO that "doesn't suck".

I'm not sticking around.  I currently play NO MMORPGs because, IMO, they're utter shite these days.  They do have the potential on bringing a great gaming experience that few other genres can do, especially over a longer period of time.

Even though I say they're utter cr*p now with the directions the genre has taken recently, I do hope I see something down the road that suits my bill.

So, until then, I'm here voicing my opinion and getting into the occasional Flamethread Firefights (because forum PvP is better than PvP in some of the games out there!).

Also, if you don't like the negative comments and complaints, deal with it.  If it wasn't for complaints, alot of major issues in MMORPGs would NEVER get resolved.  First of all, Fanbois and Forum Defense Force Posters will blindly paint a nice, happy picture on the state of the game.  No matter how many trouble tickets, bug reports, well typed and thorough forum posts, etc. have been filled out by God knows how many people, you KNOW there were issues in the games that never, ever would have been resolved if it wasn't for a major action / series of actions by the players.  Sometimes it takes a flood of flameposts of complaints or people outright cancelling to get the devs to take notice and say, "Oh s**t, something is actually wrong!"

Some of us just aren't placid little sheep.

"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." so if in last few years there wasnt even one good first person shooter should that mean that i shouldnt wait for a good shooter that would live up to quake 1 or 2 ?

same here. there were mmos that were good, others were garbage and even more garbage is being released.

I'm waiting on that one game that's either going to bring me back to the good ol' days or pull me into the new generation of MMO's.

Obviously and not so hard to figure out, we are waiting for an MMO that's worth playing.

Simply because they are searching for something that will reproduce that feeling of "hitting the crack pipe" for the very first time.

We go to great lengths in masochizing ourselves and each other in search of this elusive pigment of reality.

Because Evolution has a chance to occur as a result of stimulus.

In other words, those of us who provide the feedback needed to improve the game are the voice of change.

Everyone else is a placid sheep doing nothing but chewing grass with their heads down.  Not a lot of insightful feedback is likely from this camp.

    Cheers.

I get that the genre has potential but what I don't get is why you guys keep supporting games through box purchases and subs that all use the same basic core mechanics that you dislike? I have no issue if you wanna chill in a forum and bitch that is your right. But for the love of god if you want it to change why support the current direction of the genre? Why not vote with your wallets? And why, oh why put yourselves through the torture of playing these games if you already know what they will be like?
