Because the very first contest I ever won here was a boxed copy of AC2.
AC2's closure was announced a few days later.
So what did mmorpg.com give me in place of AC2?
A beta key for The Chronicle.
So a somewhat good game was closed down just so I would have to be exposed to the lunacy that was Rapid Reality Games and their short lived The Chronicle.
It was all an epic scheme on the part of Turbine to piss me off.
So screw AC2.

All you guys saying Come on turbine, it wont actually help. You'll have to start up a petition form and get signatures for it. Maybe then they'll hear our call. It shouldn't be that hard to release the source code for the game and let the fans throw a server of their own if they're done with the game and want to focus on other things.

Turbine is not going to release the source code for AC2. It is an earlier iteration of the Turbine Engine (TE2 I think) that is used for both DDO and LOTRO. We already saw what happened when a group tried to get an emmulator running - a Cease and Desist from Turbine. Now some are trying the open source route, but it has been slow going. I do find it ironic that people are still trying to get the game back approaching 5 years after the servers were shut down, which is longer than the game was live. It is a bit of a testament to how loved it was, and is, but its loyal fans.
SO SAID TURBINE COMMUNITY RELATIONS MANAGER FOR AC1, MUST BE TRUE FOR AC2 AS WELL!
I will let you all peek behind the curtain here for a sec... A while back, long before DDO went FTP, AC was discussed as being the first one here to go this route. It made sense after all. So we did some investigation, and found that due to the way AC was coded, how the billing system works with AC and how the server communicate with our Authentication servers, we would have to re-write pretty much the entire game in order to make it work the way we as a company wanted it to. We are talking an enormous amount of time and money for something unproven.(FTP)
So then after looking at DDO, it was found to be much easier because the game and all related things were better designed to handle a switch like this.
Now this is not to say we won't ever take AC FTP, but there are no plans for it right now. I will however not say this won't ever happen.
Would you pick up this game again if they did a relaunch with their expansion "Legions", made some system improvments to bring it up to par with the LOTRO engine, but made it a Free 2 Play MMO?
I could actually see them make a AC3 in the future, it was a long time since they made a game last and I think there actually is a market for a new AC.
But I don't see them digging up AC2, I don't think they would get in the money for all the work to make it F2P. A fresh remake would be a different thing it I am pretty sure they would make it F2P then.
AC do have a good rep with older MMO players, enough to attract a large enough community. But relaunching AC2 with another engine would cost almost exactly as much as making AC3 which I am pretty sure have potential to get more players.
It was a long time ago since Turbine made a game and it is time soon. It could see AC3 but not AC2 as their next game.

I was not really a fan of the content of Legions. I think it was amazing what they were able to make with such a small dev team for that expansion. There were alot of the boring kill x mobs y times and collect z item from q mobs quests.
If AC2 is ever to be updated re-released. It needs to be more pvp oriented like it was at launch. Turbine needs to distinguish it from its other titles and all the other generic theme park games that litter the market now. AC2 was faction themed in its storyline and thats the direction it should head. Most of the reasons AC2 failed had nothing to do with the direction of the game at launch. The game was too buggy and the engine was too new. Executed properly a new AC title with Turbines new F2P model and leveraging all their existing tech should easily be able to hold a couple hundred thousand players.
This may sound a bit weird but I would actually prefer if they relaunched it with a monthly fee. I'm not rich.. Not even close. F2P games just ALWAYS attract all the wrong people it seems. A lot of my AC-love comes from the community in those games and I would hate to see it turn into a 1337-kiddie spam fest.
Of course they couldn't expect to get $15 like new games but the costs of running an older game can't possibly be anywhere near the costs of a new game anyway.
F2P: I probably wouldn't play it.
Smaller monthly fee: I would be there the second it reopened.
I wouldnt worry too much about leet-kiddies playing AC2. I assume they wouldnt last long in a game they couldnt reach level-cap, almost no gear rewards for big quests/raids, and very little solo quests available
I wouldn't worry about anything because a game like that wouldnt survive six months... You guys sure know how to make a game sound like crap... hope you never do any PR work lol.
I would not play AC 2 if it came back as f2p. I enjoyed Asheron's Call a lot and it was my first MMO love, but I did not care for Asheron's Call 2 very much because the gameplay and character systems diverted so much from the original game. The gameworld in AC 2 felt more closed off and less open world like the Dereth in the original Asheron's Call. If Asherons' Call 3 came out and it was more like Asheron's Call in gameplay but with current gen graphics/visuals and a improved combat system I would go for it, but not AC 2.

I believe there is a market for an AC2 type game - a game somewhere between hardcore and casual. Is this a game for everyone? no, absolutely not. If you like the bait & switch, lvl-cap, solo based mmos then sure, AC2 wouldn't be for you.
For the things I mentioned:
A soft-cap balances PvP. Much like the Trolls so in monster play in lotro,
No gear rewards because everything was crafted, which creates an in-game economy

Another AC1 player puts his dislike of AC2 on MMORPG.com. What else is new? :P
I have yet to see a AC1 fan post a text of why he wants AC3 to be like AC1 without mentioning his dislike of AC2 - and funnily enough, their statements of what AC2 lacked is usually false. (not aimed at your personal complaints of AC2, Ryukan)
OMG I was getting excited when I logged on here and saw this post in the history list. Just another what if thred? Hell yeah I would play it. If it had never shut down I would have never played another game cause I'd still be playing AC2! Don't do this to me as my heart cant take it, it almost jumped out of my chest when I saw this thinking it was actually happening! I hate you!
