Angry much? he wasn't just giving an opinion he was telling us as if he as anuthority on how a Superhero MMO should be made. So yeah who is he? and why should i care what he says? atleast OP of this thread isn't looking at the game through tunnel vision. There might be problems with UI and controls but that doesn't mean one has to ignore the positive aspects of the game. You wanted an article with lots of negativity sorry you were disappointed. Write a letter to mmorpg staff and bit*h about it all you like.

It's all hype, I'll play OB and see if I like it, but I'm not going to ever get hyped for another mmo again. My expectations for MMOs atm are very, very low, and I doubt they will change any time soon. I've yet to be impressed by an MMO over the last five years, and have been especially disappointed by these super hero games. does it play like an  Arcade Game? the combat looks arcadish if so does it loseall RPG-ish feel?  How is player to player interaction/dependency? How is communication? is it menu based "phrase" communication?

There are good things, bad things and different things going on. It's beta. That's all I'll say.

Take the DU out of DCUO and what are you left with? The same pop and fizzle of the previous superhero MMOgen

These two games, being of the same sub genre, couldn't be more different from eachother.

Nope. the only similarity is that they both are superhero games. And the comparison ends there.

My big problem is, aside from CO's major custom options, and the gear you pick up cosmetically altering your character, all these same things could be said about CO.

Heck, CO's tuturial even involved you having to disable 4 machines in order to save the day and end the tutorial.  Much like the "pillars" mentioned, here.

It's quite possible that DCUO could play much better than the mess that is CO, but I haven't moved an inch in my skepticism after reading this article.

Darn it Rob thanks for raining on my parade, I hate CO with a passion haha, well atleast in DCUO's favor I just think most Cryptic games are kind of cheesy and campy which just isn' my style so maybe I could still like the game.  Where CO was concerned though after loading up the trial was unable to get past the second quest because the game seemed so lame.

I remember seeing that game Freedom force on the shelves years back but I was burned out on hero stuff at the time, what was it exactly in FF that made the powers custumization so good?  and more importantly why do you think the three super hero mmorpg's we have now don't follow something along those lines?

My hope is that, unlike CO, DCUO will just PLAY better.  you know, those kinds of differences that aren't easy to describe in a review that can make the difference between trash and treasure.

Stuff like... the controls being responsive, the UI being intuitive, where you spend time in combat doing cool stuff instead of half your attacks hitting dead air due to lag or getting tripped over and over again, spending more time on your back than Pamela Anderson at Hairbandapalooza.  (STO)

FF allowed you to create your own characters, and buy them into your hero team based on points.  Granted, it was a bit weak on character skins and meshes, but many fans of the game helped out on that with websites full of them.

You could customize your powers in almost every way.  The animation used, the colors and/or blast type for cosmetics.  But you also could have the power do damage in a cone, or radius, or line, etc.  You chose how much knockback it did.  You chose the damage type:  fire, acid, magic, cold, etc... And depending on what you chose, it effected how much the power cost, and thus, how much the hero cost.

All you'd have to do to balance this in an MMO is limit the points you can spend.  Or just do it the way Ryzom does.

Ryzom is the closest MMO in my experience to do something like this.  It works off a give and take system.  You could have, for rough example, increased damage but shorter range or a longer recharge time.  It has a number of parameters which you can modify for each one of your skills.

IMO, if you can't do this in a superhero game, it's almost doomed to be a weak experience.

It's quite possible that it's a PvP issue.  That having that sort of framework is just too difficult to balance in a PvP game.  That could be true, though the actual PnP game(CO's namesake) seems to be pretty well balanced.

This game truly is a lot of fun. Will it tear me from my regular game? Probably not. But I am glad to be able to help out with the testing of a new and upcoming game. Who know, maybe I will pick it up and play it on the side from my other games.

And I am playing it on a PC. Tried using a game controller and it was simply too restrictive for my taste.

I have to agree a bit with the nay-seyers in this thread, big surprise.  What people forget is that acess is everything to sites like mmorpg.com.  They make money on ads, and get people to come to their site with content and sweepstakes from game publishers. You know what happens when you make too many negative reviews , especially toward big publishers ? Zero acess, no sweepstakes, no beta handouts, no ads.  Publishers have plenty of other sites to go to who play ball. If you think these are conspiracy theories then you know nothing about the game business.

This preview is suspect not because it is so positive. It is because there is almost nothing negative the player has to say. Now either this game is the end all of gaming, the WoW killer and the second coming of Jesus, ORRRR the guy is just another fluff boy who writes previews for this site.

Orrr maybe you didn't read the preview and realize that it pretty much only sums up character creation and the tutorial stopping short of playing in most of the open world.

Its amazing how ridiculous this community can get sometimes.

I wasn't really consider getting this game before I read the review, however, I am slightly more interested now.

However, I must comment on a few of the above posts. Follow the "about us" link at the bottom of page...I doubt that these people are in collusion with the gaming industry.

I am 100% sure you didn't read the entire article because it was clearly mentioned that....

'I can agree with Drew Wood’s earlier assessment that DCUO will not be an MMO for everyone. Many traditionalists might hate its console-esque style combat. But I, for one, am very pleased to report that DCUO may be the first superhero MMO that truly makes you feel super."

    Reading is hard i know.

Not to address anyone specifically, but this is part one of a multi-part article.  It does indeed only cover the beginning aspects, with my opinions of what I've played thus far included.  The second article next week includes more specifics, but will still have some things missing that were available to me during the 1-9 section of the game.  Mainly because I don't want to bog the articles down with too much minutia.  There's a lot to cover even in these first few levels, so I beg pardon if I leave some things out.

As for needing negatives to somehow make you feel better about my preview... ice has one bugged power.  Sometimes the your new gear doesn't show up right away on the character panel when you equip it.  And I got stuck inside Raven's tortured mind once.  There are plenty of little bugs in the game, but nothing that hampered my enjoyment of the title.

The second part does indeed mention some negatives, but by and large I really do enjoy this game... READ: WHAT I'VE PLAYED OF IT.  So you'd better get used to reading about how much I like it... shockingly, I'm paid to give my opinion and this happens to be it.

From everyone I know who is in the beta, they all say, "Not as good as Champions." That's not saying much to me, considering I never really cared for Champions. Also, I wouldn't buy an SOE game until someone I know and trust plays it and tells me that it's good. SOE has burned me to many times.

Hey guys, I just wanted to remind everyone that this game is still under NDA. While you may discuss everything talked about in the article and gathered from other news sources, talking about anything other than that is against the NDA for DCUO. Thanks.

When i first heard about this, i was very dubious. another superhero genre game. But i must admit i am starting to look forward to when this comes out. there are certain aspects of the game that look exciting rather than the "smash the bad guy" routine. I was scheptical of the power system and i guess i still will be till i actually get a chance to play the game, but the idea of evolving costumes sounds interesting. match that with the chance to play along side the dc heroe's/villians i think its a good idea.

I do find people are rather cautious with new things (systems or games) these days as they are unsure as to how it will work. but hopefully things will change and we will see some changes coming out for mmo's

Hm ic... guess I chose Luthor as Villain. The Joker might as well shoot his followers out of a whim and Circe... nah.

@ALL: Sheesh, why can't a writer have an opinion about a game? Yes, you are free not to like the game. But no need to attack people. *rolls eyes*

That's because Cryptic's using a shallow game engine that doesn't allow for much besides instanced grinding.

Funny, you didn't mention anything about any bugs in the actual article.  I do agree this is just your opinion, wheras it should be a critique.  Saying that a game is consolish when it is made for a console ... not really a negative if you think about it.  People wouldn't be wondering where mmorpg.com's loyalties lie if this wasn't one of many such marketing previews.  It isn't a conspiracy, it's just the reality of doing business. Anyone who claims they can get insider info and exclusives and be fully critical of the publisher products is either naive or a downright liar.

I can't believe you played the same game I did. While the name DC and its associated supermen are nice, the game is very repetative & boring. The graphics are very simple and unimpressive. The AI is a joke along with the animation; it feels very unpolished. Character customization is very limited and as far as I'm concerned, this game, except for optional targetting, is just worse than Champion''s Online.

The only good thing was the opening movie and I'm betting that we'll never see anything like it again! I'm NOT going to be buying this game and will check out the periodic reviews over the next year out of curiosity.

Does anyone have any input on how this plays on PC vs PS3? Is gameplay identical? Any forecasts on player numbers etc?

I'm a purist, and have never played an MMO on anything other than my PC, but I just picked up a PS3 for GT5, and looking at some of the game-play, I'm thinking I may get more out of playing DCUO on my PS3 and approaching it as an online action game rather than a traditional MMO.

Marvel universe is a bit better, I guess, but Mark Hamill voicing the Joker = win!
