SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

If you've been considering trying out the free-to-play version of either Dungeons & Dragons Online or Lord of the Rings Online, this would be a good time to sign up. At stake are 100,000 Turbine Points that would pretty much ensure the ability to purchase every item in the Turbine Store. All that is required is to sign up for a free DDO or LOTRO account between December 1st and December 31st to automatically be entered. Already have an account? Not to worry. You can sign up too!

  • What Can I win?

    • One 1st place winner for each game get’s 100,000 Turbine Points

    • Two 2nd place winners get lifetime subscriptions to either game

    • Five 3rd place winners get 1000 Turbine Points

  • Do I have to purchase anything to enter?

    • No, the contest is free to enter, no purchase necessary.

  • Ok great, how do I enter?

    • To enter, go to either www.lotro.com or www.ddo.com between Dec 1 to Dec 31 2010 and register for a free account to become entered in contest.

  • But I already play LOTRO, can I still enter?

  • If I enter to win for LOTRO, do I need to enter separately for DDO?

    • Yes. Each game will have individual drawings. You may enter to win for each game, but you must sign up separately.

ELIGIBILITY: This Sweepstakes is (1) open to legal residents in the United States and the District of Columbia

Taken from  http://www.ddo.com/news/1243-sweepstakes . Would be good to include this, cause it got me down when I checked it >.<

    I find it baffling really.

I mean. It's ingame currency. It cannot be traded for "real" money outside the game. So it has no value outside the game!

So why is this limited to only US players? While (especially for DDO) they have an international customerbase !

    /FAIL !

It also requires real world money to acquire through Turbine. With this real world value as determined by it's retail cost you will be paying income tax on your winnings. Winning this will be no different then winning a car. And that is why it's limited to the U.S.

Sorry, but you can have contests where you win stuff with value be more than just the US, winning turbine points is no different than winning anything on this site, which gee, what do you know, applies most contests to more than the US.

This is more than likely turbine not wanting to deal with any other countries contest rules.

Odd that the Lifer subs are 2nd place prizes.  I'd prefer the lifer sub, personally.  Sure, you can buy everything, but you'd be missing PvP, rest XP, destiny points, and probably some other stuff I forgot.  And anything coming in the future.  I'd rather just have the lifer sub and be done with it.

They and codemasters are separate companies, I'm sure Codemasters would scream something fierce.  Sure, they don't have IP bans, but this offer is basically advertisement.  I wouldn't let Turbine advertise US servers in my territory.

This kind of "contest" would be illegal in for example Sweden since it would be regarded as lottery which we have very strict laws for.

    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

Considering I'm a citizen of the U.S.A. I have an adequate knowledge of this country's tax laws.  I know nothing about Canada's nor do I care. The Internal Revenue Service, the taxing collecting body of the U.S. government gets real interested when sweepstakes and giveaways get to the point where the word 'thousand' is present in a reward. The first prize here has a retail value of $1,000.00.

I hold no ill will when some company in a country I don't live in decides to hold similar contests that restrict participation to it's citizens. Envious? Maybe. Upset? Never. Why do others take it so personally when a company in the U.S. decides to do the same?

Just because the product is available internationally does not mean everything a particular company does must be internationally available.

Laws are lotteries, never really understood it...but as far as Turbine, since I believe they do not run the servers outside the US, I do not think they had permission to give away 100,000 points on someone else's server.

That's just silly. It's like winning in-game gold. The TP is tied to your account. If they really wanted to make this fair, they would have just given a free access to everything  for the account.

So, what about the weekly Turbine lotteries that are open for all accounts (no matter location)?

Are those also illegal in Sweden?

Edit: It was meant as a honest question :)

But it could seem that if things are held completely inside the game it could be legal (which the lotteries are) and the problems occur when it is held 'outside' the game, which this 100.000 TP thingie is.

    I hope I understood it right :)

true as i posted on the forums over at ddo, they could of run this contest in game instead of sperate and they wouldn't have toi deal with laws and restrictions from the real world. But they chose to do this on the side. I guess because you can't award a vip status ingame, but since you can get TP for doing favor, they certianly could of easly gave the winner an excluded quest ingame to award them the points. Oh well grats to the winner anyway

There are tons of Canadian players, not to mention South or Central American players. Do not forget America is much more than only the United States, thank you.

Next time random epics or LOTRO cash shop drops will only drop for US citizens.

im getting tired of this crap.

im active here for a few years now and what can i say:

-only 5% of contests are for EU only. strangely enough US members dare to whine when...

-80% of good contests (i mean random 500 gold in some random asian grindfest doesnt count does it) are for US only

-in worldwide contests 80% of the winners are from US

needless to say, but its obvious this website loves americans much more.

MMORPG.com isn't running the contest. I hate to say it but it's the games industry that loves America.

    Always read the small print.

Why are you quoting a response ot a person speaking about the geographical boundaries of the "America's" when the person you are quoting didn't say "America" but "outside the U.S."?

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

I would agree that because its a prize that income tax would have to be paid on it... but we don't pay tax on points received now. Are they taxable? Are we actually paying tax and Turbine just flips it for us? All I know is if I purchase points, and its $$19.99 worth, I don't get charged $21.39, I get charged $19.99.

However, setting up a free contest requires a LOT of legal legwork, so just keeping this one to the US only is probably the easiest way to avoid all the other legal ramifications and hoops they'd have to jump through.
