In his latest Star Wars: The Old Republic column, MMORPG.com Community Manager Michael Bitton gives readers a bit of history behind the importance of the lightsaber, both to individuals and to the overall lore behind the game. In addition, Mike ponders how the acquisition of lightsabers will be accomplished. Check out Mike's thoughts and then add your own to the mix in our comments section.
With all the talk of Crew Skills (Bioware’s answer to crafting in Star Wars: The Old Republic, for those of you not keeping track) lately , there hasn’t been much said on the assembly of one’s lightsaber. In fact, Bioware’s recent update on Crew Skills is pretty cryptic on how lightsaber assembly and/or acquisition will work, only hinting that we’ll find out more later.

Who cares, no one is going to play a Jedi/Sith in this game. Its gonna be all troopers, agents, bounty hunters and such. I mean, who wants to be a force user anyway....

On the side note, there was never a worse line uttered in SW universe about the Jedi who were peacekeepers and mediators. Lightsabre is FAR from being their lifeline.
Nice article/musing.
Here's where I geek out a bit.
While it's been ages since I read 'Shadows Of The Empire" (great book btw) I recall there being some sort of personal risk to Luke while he was baking the crystal. And that it was implied that it was quite a sense of accomplishment when it was fully completed. Vader even remarked "Indeed you ARE powerful!" as he fired up his captured son's lightasber and saw the green blade in Return Of The Jedi.
It would be cool to see a mechanic whereas that Lightsaber, the one the player creates for themselves, is actually something to be proud of. It always kinda irked me in SWG how players were always encouraged to 'gear up' to better lightsabers, which I always found rather lore breaking (of course... what ISN'T lore breaking in SWG?). As is the trend these days, to be constantly rotating gear in MMO's perhaps it would be best if TOR's lightsabers were 100% reward/looted until end game, when at that time they would finally create that one blade that could be 'your life'.
I disagree greatly. In such a vast galaxy with so many worlds to police, many of them quite violent, a 'peacekeepers' life is indeed going to depend on their lightsaber.
[mod edit - keep it civil]. Everyone knows that Jedi depended on their Lightsaber and without it they were only as much Jedi as they were able to use force, which in most cases were only force lift, force push, force run and mind influence. Jedi NEED their lightsaber to be a COMPLETE Jedi.
There were only, what, 2 Jedi who didn't use a lightsaber?
Side note: "If you desire peace, prepare for war" I believe is how the motto goes.
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
OK, guys let's not focus on some guy's spelling and stay on topic please.
Those concept art of various lightsaber looks so so cool
Yes, I think you'll probably be close to the truth in your assumption that hilts are just a different visual style with different components that are removable, like it worked in KOTOR.
You also have a crafting skill for lightsaber components, so we know these are in.
As for Ilum, that is out of the question because the Jedi is clearly seen creating her saber on Tython and the second planet you go to is the capital world (Coruscant / Dromund Kaas) so Ilum is higher level. Although later on, you might acquire crystals from that place of course.

Hihi, wana bet its not a huge thing to get your own lightsaber?
Tutorial stuff , or well, Story line tutorial progression.
There is always one expert on Star Wars who thinks he has it all figured out.
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

Im picking on WoW btw because its the beast that made all of this possible
Sadly, this is exactly how I'm expecting TOR to play out.
To be honest i was hoping for something similar to a lightsaber that you craft after some kind of training and the crystal is attuned to you and grows in strength as you level or something, the hilt itself can be upgraded in parts and thats where you get your defensive or offensive stats from.
This isn't to say I want to change out lightsabers like I'm changing armor sets or blasters on any of the game's other classes. Bioware really needs to separate lightsabers this way, by focusing on the lightsaber as a vessel, with the upgrades consisting primarily of new components such as beefier crystals and better parts that confer better stats.
Do this and you will go down the same road that SOE found out the hard way to be so destructive in SWG. And no, i am not talking about "alpha" class issue. I am talking about the issue where dev time starts to get devoted to one class above all others, so much so in the end you start seeing entire patches about only one class and nothing is done regarding issues that other classes have.
I would only hope that Bioware would have learned this lesson already.
Regards
I like the idea of stripping looted sabers for conponents but it's probably way too late to change whatever current system they have now :[
The components for an average light saber might be common or uncommon. However the components for a great lightsaber might be very rare indeed. Rare drops or rare mobs or hard long quests would make these lightsaber components stand out from the riff raff.
Have you seen the cinematic (ingame) where you finally get your lightsaber? It looks pretty sweet.
As I remember the lore the lightsaber was not used for some time after "jedi" came to be.
I do have issues with the "FAR from being their lifeline" comment. It is a vital part of the life cycle of a Jedi Knight. Now, I am not willing to say it is of the upmost importance but it is a bonding experience with the force. Even peacekeepers have to have the methods to defend those that can't defend themselves, for them it is both the force and yes their lightsaber.
I recall the first TOR video I saw a while back of a Sith Warrior and Bounty Hunter running an instance, the last boss was a Jedi and he dropped a lightsaber. The Sith placed it in his offhand so he could dual wield.
I would imagine your fist lightsaber will be a Quest/Mission reward and subsequent ones will be future rewards or loot drops.
I am quite sure that many people here are such devoted fans that they will the deny the utter disaster that the prequels are. To them I suggest the Plinkett reviews, which completely destroy both episode I and II in 90 minutes or more. Please be educated by these reviews. You can find them on redlettermedia.com.
So our first lightsaber does look like it will come from a quest on our starter planet. We will then construct our own probably at the end of our 10 or so levels on the starter planet. This will be our 'first' created lightsaber. We will not be very strong in the force yet, and will not be able to control the process as well. So I see the Jedi/Sith going back to the starter planet a few times to construct a new, better quality, more powerful lightsaber later.
We know from dev interviews that they want us to go back to the starter planets at higher levels through story. They want lower level characters to see higher level players running around. So lower levels see what they can become as they play the game type of thing.
As far as crafting lightsabers. I see it as something that can help the economy. Many people are complaining that the Force users will have an advantage because of the lightsaber creation vs every other class having to make, buy weapons. So I see the Scavenging and Artifice skills as finding and creating Jedi or Sith artifacts. These artifacts can include parts to lightsabers.
So with a scavenging skill, you can pick up a dropped lightsaber off a mob and recover usefull material for creating artifacts. Then sell these to Jedi or Sith to upgrade their lightsabers. Don't know if this will include crystalls, but I don't see why not. Only the Sith or Jedi should be able to work or shape the crystal, but harvesting should be for anyone.
This would mean the Jedi or Sith would find and create these artifacts and crystalls with the crafting skills Scavenging and Arifice. Or buy them from others or the AH. Then use these items in a lightsaber crafting station on your ship for upgrades to your current lightsaber. Or with a quest a "X" level, you have to collect required items to create your new lightsaber back on your starter planet.
This would make all classes equal in crafting. No advantage to Force users because of lightsaber creation. If you have to have artifacts you collect through crafting or AH to upgrade or create a lightsaber. It will be the same for all classes with their crafting and gear.
How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them?

There has been a release of the quest/story cut scene where you attain your first ls.

yea, you have a training saber with no crystals till level 10 i think and then you get the quest to make your own saber. the only thing that worries me is that they demo'ed a gameplay video of combat jedi vs. jedi and they showed that they looted his saber and equipped it. there may not be any hope for saber customization at this point and eventually everyone will have the same epic/legendary sabers..
oh well, i'll still be playing either way
This was also alpha or prealpha phase systems, their system to actually create lightsabers may not have been implemented yet but they needed to create full lightsabers to test mechanics.
I'm not saying you're wrong, you might likely be right, just saying don't base what you think you know from some video of a game still in development.
