I hear their public transportation is amazing, and everyone is told to smile, its part of their job to be pleasant and smile.

Holy Hell imagine trying to get our public officials and employees to smile during their days. lmfao. Lots of our stuff is owned or semi run by the government like our transit systems . Holy f-ing christ, they are the rudest bunch of b-tards you have ever met, and they'll just drive by you at the stop too. And cause we have unions their bosses cant do shit. I wish they'd all seppuku themselves and give us privatized transit, i dont care if it costs a little more. If only to get those lousy bus drivers outta jobs. Bah, i hate buss drivers!

    I wanna move to Japan.

Good luck with that, Japanese are pretty xenophobic and don't accept weeaboos anymore than other gaijins.

True but at least they have better customer service than for example in germany, where the service worker normally points vague in the direction wher ethe item is that you search and hardly knows something about the stuff sold, not to mention office places for people where you dare to force them to work and do their service job :P

The country is as superficial as it gets. No one is honest, everyone has a mask on.

Granted, it can be great going there for a holiday, since they are kind as long as they don't feel threatened. After few months their attitude towards you changes, if you're still there.

There is no such thing as a superior culture, simple as that.

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

Not really true. As long as you get along with them, they'll like you. It is just unlikely because of the huge difference in social culture and mentality. Don't feel bad about it, It's got nothing to do with you being of different nationality. Just wanted to clear that up :]

If anyone ever plans to visit that place, don't even think about going with the weeaboo attitude. Just a warning, it is disrespectful. So leave that in your country, read a bit about social manners in Japan and you shall have no problem.

But yes, you are true about the mask part. But I wouldn't really call it a mask, redefine it to say... a way of showing respect. If they have met a foreigner before and they have had bad past experiences with them, maybe they'll be a bit prejudiced. But I would say they are the most non-prejudiced people in earth, but I don't know alot about how youth are like over there nowdays though. They also keep a lot of stuff to themselves so they may appear shy, so unless you haven't broken any social rules it's no way a sign of them hating you.

This is the best signature ever. Well, it is really up to you to decide. :x

I know, this has nothing to do with the OP subject, but I'd say that wearing masks is common in a lot of cultures, only the masks or better said the behaviour and social traits with which we hide our innermost thoughts or real feelings can be different from culture to culture, whether it's Japanese or American or western European.

They're still masks; only usually we're better and more understanding towards the masks being used in our own culture, because those we've learn to recognize better and are more familiar with.

I think most people in most cultures learn different ways to hide their true thoughts and feelings behind masks and other camouflage, as protection from hurt or as a means of social lubricant.

Yes I agree on this in generally it reminds me about the word persona. Like let us be honest most of us act in the internetw ay different we do in daily live. Part of me would actually goes that far that internet behavior shows someones true self, as long the person thinks it can not hold responsible for this. In that case even someone that totally lies about him or herself in the internet to predict something else shows the true personality. It is kind of interresting how people act if they have nor their cultural envoirement restriction that are around. Like that a vocal issue is normally something that can result in justice punishment. Take away the sort of consequence danger and people show a lot about themself.

A big problem is in general maybe that what we see by us as an standard in nice behavior is in an other culture deep rooted as something really bad. We already have that in religion cultures and I bet someone sure got by some behaviors by otehrs at least at the first moment often a bit alienated. Guess the art in generally is to keep calm and hope to have a chance to get a better understanding of it.

Not to mention a wise sayingf rom Terry pratchett that says that we always forget that in other countries live the same bastards as by us. :P

Ok ok I stop to be offtopic :)

    Edit:

And double face is not only a japan only domaina s said before. It remidns me well of some practical weeks I amde in an electronical market where the  worker, talked totally sweet and with a ncie smile to a customer, and after left diorectly said:'What for an idiot, he sure does have not the slightest idea what I explained to him'

And tehre the customer was just more of a nice old guy. Sinc ethat I am always very carfeul when doing shopping.
