Anarchy online was released before WOW so i disagree that all the end game grind became more prevalent during the days of WOW. I haven't grinded end game in any other MMO as much as i did in AO. So far in my experince if MMO has end game grind players are not happy and if there is no end game grind players are still not happy. it is just too damn hard to make everyone happy. So best thing to do is supply what public demands.
I don't know how you can say that with a straight face. Before WoW we had choice in the MMO genre, since WoW almost every game that has released has followed that model. Hell, even established games were revamped to be more like the almighty WoW.
i can say that with straight face because i played AO religiously for 6 years. Grind has always been there even before WOW. And as far as other MMO companies trying to model WOW, whose fault is that?
Yes, there was an emphasis on endgame in SOME MMO's before WoW, but at least we had a choice. However, since WoW it is all we have had and it's been rammed down our throats. BTW the endgame that I am referring to is endgame PvE raiding, not other endgame activities such as PvP, I enjoy endgame PvP, repetitious PvE raiding however... I HATE.
Who's fault is it, you ask? Lots of people. The 12 million sheep that play WoW. The money-men that won't green-light a project unless its all nice and WoWified. The developers themeselves... I could go on and on.

12 million players are having fun, that is all that matters. It's not their fault for enjoying something they like. You are still indirectly trying to blame player base and WOW itself when the entire fault lies on those who try to copy WOW's success model.

Not all MMO's are about gear. Pre-CU SWG wasn't. It had a crafter based economy. If you could save the credits, you could buy the best Composite Armour/T-21 Rifle/Acklay Power Hammer - whatever. Craft results varied greatly depending on the materials used, crafters skill (and skilltapes), and experimentation used. Everyone knew the best crafters on their particular server, they were just as big (if not bigger) celebrities than the top PvP players. Sure there would be strange occasions when a ridiculous item would drop from a mob, for instance one of my guildies got an insane Mindfire Pike from some silly low-level mob on Tatooine. But these drops were totally random and EXTREMELY rare.
Not exactly true, gear ruled in PVP, and always did, also great dot weapons weren't all that hard to find. I had about 20 myself ranging from mind fires to mind poisons, they weren't that hard to get. I had four mind fires that ticked for over 600 each all with 90 pot. Never had a problem finding them.
AoC started out as a PvP focused game where gear meant very little indeed. Fights would be won on player-skill alone. Craig Morrison changed all that with patch 1.05 though. Changed it for the worse in my and most other PvP players minds. Most AoC PvPers rate 1.04 as the height of the game, ever since it has been all downhill. PvEers are delighted with the current state of the game though, why wouldn't they be? The game is now following the WoW model of gear > all. However, now the only servers with a decent population are PvE servers, PvP servers are total ghost-towns.
Can't really blame the dev team for this, for 6 months all you heard was "where's all the gear"?
Personally, I detest the whole gear dependancy, raid-based, endgame, endgame, endgame thing that has become prevalent in most MMO's since the crapfest that is WoW was released. Unfortunately, people like me appear to be in the minority.
I do as well to an extent, but I also realize, gear=reason to do, for many in the genre. The gear dependancy is a direct result of player habit IMO, everyone wants an advantage, that's where gear comes in.

And yet without WoW, I feel MMORPGs would be far more advanced and interesting than they are today. So the question becomes "Is the genre better off with, or without the existance of WoW?" Id have to say it would probably be better of without WoW.

How dare these new fangled mmorpg players like games designed in way's the industry vet's don't approve of, how dare those "money-men" expect an immediate or reasonable return on their investments?!?
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Not indirectly at all, the first thing I mentioned were those 12 million sheep. It's pretty hard to get any clearer than that!
Also, I honestly don't believe that those 12 million people are having fun. A lot of them are not having fun, but are addicted to the game. It's like a herion addict, yeah it's great when they start, but once they are addicted they can't give it up even though they are no longer having any fun.
In summation, WoW is the devil and needs to be purged! It is a greater threat to our youth than heroin and crack put together! Grab the pitchforks and follow me down to Blizzard HQ! Burn the heritics! BURN THEM!!

I am for one not sad that MMO is not limited to just basement dwellers and socialy awkward geeks and nerds.
What WoW did was introduce an entire generation of kids to self induglent play style, a forum for the destruction of even the most basic of manners and etiquette. Overall I think WoW probably is and has done more harm than good to its overall player base, both physically and mentally.
You may poke fun and call people basement dwellers and socially awkward geeks and nerds, but I believe WoW is more responsible for that type of stereotype than any other game out there.
Take my brother in law for example, he and his friends are die hard WoW players, and frankly most of them dont take care of themselves, they smell, are unkempt, none have a healthy physique, and even trying to have a conversation with them about anything other than WoW is painful. I actually had to tell him his friends werent allowed at my parties because they made everyone uncomfortable. WoW is a relatively new trend, and it has lots of followers, and has created an unhealthy life style.
You can say that any MMO might cause this, but i disagree, no other MMO has had this much scope to cause so much damage.
P.S. Imo WoW isnt for kids, they dont yet understand the implications of sinking their lives into it. Learning moderation is something you learn as you get older, and I will bet you dollars to donuts that learning process will be hampered with a lot of young people.

Haha funny because i have seen my room mates dirty, unwashed and smelly for days during their marathon, sessions in EQ. And that was years ago. it was called evercrak for a reason. All MMO work on same formula od addiction. how else are they going to make you stay if they don't give you enough incentives to play? also only because you are socialy awkward doesn't mean you are incapable of looking after your personal hygiene, two totally different things.
I know its just a trend these days to blame everything on WOW, what is next, it caused world poverty and hunger?

Your use of the word roomate leads me to believe he is an adult, one who is by the law fully aware of the consequences of his actions. As an adult he made the decision to live that way, to give in to his weakness for the game. Thats his freedom.
But to thrust millions of unsuspecting children into a situation that they arent fully aware of the repercussions is another thing entirely. China for example has put a limit on playtime for their youth, why do you think that is?

Aren't the limits in China placed on all mmorpg's and not just WOW? so how exactly are you turning this into a "WOW problem"? And these limit's are they also restricted to children or are these limits in place for adults as well as children? I think that information could make a difference in trying to make your point.

Let us just say that everything that goes wrong in WORLD is WOW's fault.
However, the time limit in China is for everyone adult or a child, they don't differentiate.

Not everybody quite gives WoW the credit that you do.
There was before WoW.
There is after WoW.
The differences are obvious.
Where it might have gone otherwise is definitely just a matter of speculation...
...unfortunately where it has gone is a matter of damnation.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

Its the medium by which the breakdown is being fed. You can teach your kids til you are blue in the face, but in the end they'll do what they want.
How many people out there have or have had children with addiction to something in spite of the fact that they tried to teach them? How many of them have looked back and said "why didnt I see this coming?"
I agree parental guidance is of the utmost importance, but from my standpoint, WoW is just another unhealthy trend for kids, like tongue rings, smoking, or overeating.
I dont think most parents realize what kinds off assholes their children are on the internet, I guarantee you if they did, WoW subs would drop.

Your point would be better made if you don't talk about just WOW in particular but entire gaming industry in general. Looks like you haven't played much of the so called F2P genre MMO. WOW is like a saint compared to what kids do in these MMORPGS.
Just that WOW is famous and popular so everyone wants a peice of it. Why not just take the entire internet down? there is nothing more harmful for kids than that.
@jax If a bus full of children goes over a cliff more will get hurt than if a carload of children went over. besides that WoW was the game changer that mainstreamed MMOs, and in effect started the whole downward spiral.

Then why are you blaming WOW for that? it is the same for every video game out there. If children are going to do whatever they want, they will well damn do it anwyays. There are more harmful and dangerous things out in real world my friend. i guess some people just need to set their own lives and priorities straight instead of throwing blame on everything else around them.

My issue is why is this a WOW issue and not an issue for the mmorpg genre or the internet as a whole? Honestly what numbers do you have to assume that WOW is "full of kids". Atleast to the exclusion of all other games.
WOW serves a gameplay element you have no affinity for so now it's getting the blame for things that existed since EQ1 atleast.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Your point would be better made if you don't talk about just WOW in particular but entire gaming industry in general. Looks like you haven't played much of the so called F2P genre MMO. WOW is like a saint compared to what kids do in these MMORPGS.
Just that WOW is famous and popular so everyone wants a peice of it. Why not just take the entire internet down? there is nothing more harmful for kids than that.
What Im trying to say is that WoW pushed MMOs into the spotlight, and I dont think thats a good thing. The MMO industry was relatively small before the birth of the behemoth.
Honestly I do believe parents shouldnt let their kids play MMOs, I will bet you we see a lot more social problems down the road say 10 to 20 years from now.
To put it in a nutshell, our society is about to hit the fan, grades are dropping, obesity is going up,childhood the USA is going to lose its super power status before too long, but hey, as long as we have a cheap method to babysit our kids, all will be well no?
Im picking on WoW btw because its the beast that made all of this possible
@jax If a bus full of children goes over a cliff more will get hurt than if a carload of children went over. besides that WoW was the game changer that mainstreamed MMOs, and in effect started the whole downward spiral.
So what you mean is as long as EQ1 had adult's acting like asshats and addicts it was ok? Sorry your argument doesn't work for me, it's like saying it's ok to be an alcoholic as long as you only get drunk on wine (EVE) as opposed to hard liquor and beer (WOW).
What's more is I'm wondering other than the natural assumption that with ten times more players than any mmorpg what makes you so certain that WOW has so significantly higher a number of children playing than other mmorpg's such as EQ2,LOTRO or any other mmo on the market.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

yes it was okay, because these were mostly adults making decisions with the capacity to realize that it was bad for them to neglect themselves. I really dont think parents know what kinds of kids their internet is raising these days.

Playing: EVE Online
Played (retired): Anarchy Online, Star Wars Galaxies, Age of Conan.
Awaiting: Star Wars: The Old Republic, The Secret World.
12 million players are having fun, that is all that matters. It's not their fault for enjoying something they like. You are still indirectly trying to blame player base and WOW itself when the entire fault lies on those who try to copy WOW's success model.
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

I do as well to an extent, but I also realize, gear=reason to do, for many in the genre. The gear dependancy is a direct result of player habit IMO, everyone wants an advantage, that's where gear comes in.
For every minute you are angry , you lose 60 seconds of happiness."-Emerson
And yet without WoW, I feel MMORPGs would be far more advanced and interesting than they are today. So the question becomes "Is the genre better off with, or without the existance of WoW?" Id have to say it would probably be better of without WoW.
That is just matter of opinion and speculation. if anything WOW made MMO mainstream and more popular. How can that be a bad thing? more players join the MMO genre the better, its a win win situation for both players and developers.
I am for one not sad that MMO is not limited to just basement dwellers and socialy awkward geeks and nerds.

Truly spoken like a child having a temper tantrum..... Twelve million people happen to like gameplay different than you do and you are looking for someone to "blame" because the genre is passing you by.
How dare these new fangled mmorpg players like games designed in way's the industry vet's don't approve of, how dare those "money-men" expect an immediate or reasonable return on their investments?!?
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
and there it fails "where gear comes in"
me thinks it should be skill.
Generation P
BURN THEM!!
Playing: EVE Online

And the curtain falls on an amazing performance. Bravo..bravo.....refreshments are back stage sir.

Temper tantrum? Not quite. I am perfectly calm and am having a laugh. You on the other hand seem to have your panties in a bit of a bunch. Calm down mate, it's only gaming

Aren't the limits in China placed on all mmorpg's and not just WOW? so how exactly are you turning this into a "WOW problem"? And these limit's are they also restricted to children or are these limits in place for adults as well as children? I think that information could make a difference in trying to make your point.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
