I'm with op.. a lot of mmos, well basically all of them are just giant wastes of time.  Most of my friends play WoW, and it is pretty fun at end game, arena and battle grounds... But killing 10 wolves, boars, wtf ever over and over is boring not fun.  So I'd rather bot a character to max level, skip all the BS and spend my time doing what I actually want to do ingame.

There are thousands of people who play F2P games and a new MMO comes out every month, usually from the same companies. They do this because they make money by saying "This one will revolutionize the genre!!". When people see something fresh, they flock towards it. Creating hype for a game is the easiest thing to do. Telling people they have a "chance" to play in the beta makes them feel like they are part of something exclusive. When it is released to the public, it's just another anime click game, and people quit. They figure "If this game holds 1000 people, this next one will probably do as good".

If you're aware that that's what they do, then why do you fall for it in the first place?  Subscription games don't have the same sort of pressure to try to squeeze revenue out of people.

The only game I cheated in was EQ. It was amazing to me how many people used the same program I was using. It was like the majority of players were cheating, and I had never heard of that particular program until years after it had been around. Honestly, EQ had gotten so tedious I couldn't stand to play it without warping where I wanted to go, zoning to any zone I wanted to go, and then being able to succor when I got into trouble. Also, the macro capability was too enticing, since I dual-boxed. I'm convinced more than half the players in EQ use the popular hack program that I did.

I didn't get into the more crazy cheats that would let you get raid loot, and level up to max in just a few weeks. Only because they were in the hundreds of dollars. Otherwise, I would have done it. The game just became too tedious for the casual player to keep up. I should have just quit, but the cheating kinda brought a new dynamic to the game that made it interesting again.

You hack, you get banned, end of story. So what ?

What a sad thread this is. And no, in this case I do not blame the companies that make the games, in this case I blame the players that don't know what fair play means.

I have never cheated, hacked, exploited, botted, dual-boxed, etc. in any MMORPG I've played, it would completely invalidate why I enjoy playing these games: role-playing, immersion, living in a virtual world.

But then, perhaps, the current crop of mediocre games is what we deserve, after reading this thread it seems that the players deserve nothing better than mediocre anyway.

I maintain this List of Sandbox MMORPGs. Please post or send PM for corrections and suggestions.

    That was cold :(

But it's so damn true. A lot of good games are ruined because most people who cheat don't know when to stop. That and item malls. I can't stress how much these have ruined the genre.(more than hackers >:| )

p.s. I'm not seeking approval. I'm not trying to justify hacking. Save your flaming for people who deserve it. It isn't worth getting heated over.

You do deserve it. You cheat.

Don't have a lot of time for people who hack mmorpg's. Think they are a sad bunch. Getting their self esteem on by cheating and ruining it for everybody else.  Don't know if I should feel sorry for them or repeatedly punch them in their oily skinned spotty faces.

    lolwut.

So hackers are thought of as assholes, while developers who failed at making a playable game yet garnered a decent group of players for their game is considered...? People hack for a reason, y'know.

Really? You have never asked yourself 'why am I playing an unplayable game'?

I can't comprehend your rationalization.  Do you have that much free time that you can waste playing a game (hack or not) that you don't even like?  This has nothing to do with the development studio...

There's a lot of reasons one might be still playing a bad game:

    1. you've tossed a lot of money down and it's out of judgement with your wallet rather than rationality

    2. you have friends who won't follow you elsewhere

    3. it's a game you used to love immensely and you're staying for nostalgia

Just to name a few. Rather than staring at society's common sense then, since it seems to fail in reasoning with everyone, think of the psychological aspects.

If your going to cheat, play a single player game.  Cheating in an MMO ruins it for everyone, regardless of whether you are just using a speed hack to get across the map.

It does effect the economy, even if you are just speed hacking.  It allows you to get gold/items faster, and you then pump that into the economy which inflates and ruins it for others.

I have no love for hackers and very much dislike anyone who does it in any type of online game.  Play fair or GTFO.

I am entitled to my opinions, misspellings, and grammatical errors.

Wtf are you waffling on about little man? There is no justifaction for cheating or shades of grey in this black and white situation. If you cheat you cheat. If  you don't like the game don't play it. That's the worst excuse I have ever heard anybody make about anything.

Maple Story should almost concede and allow them..

95% of every high level characters used the vaccum programs at one point in time.  Leveling in the game was (probably still is?) just so stupid and oppresive that you couldn't blame them anyways.

"Hackers", or children who didn't get loved by mom and dad enough, usually need to find a way to be superior to everyone else to compensate for the lack of this in RL.

    Sad OP, stupid thread.

    Collector's editions are scams.
