You're not ever going to convince me that its not on blizzards end.
About 4-5 years ago I tried Wow (not my cup of tea) right before wiping the harddrive and reinstalling. Since then I've built 3 new computers never once installing wow or logging in to blizzard...ever. A couple months ago I was at a friends house who was playing wow and went to log on and check out my character and it was hacked.
No chance of it being a keylogger, virus, malware, phising or anything on the client end. Password used was, of course, unique to blizzard.
Most security breaches usually come from within a company though, (disgruntled workers can mess things up along with someone selling account info for personal gain, etc.) so I would guess that this is where the problems might be.
Yeah I'm going to call BS on this, for one you tried it when wow first came out then stopped. All of a sudden you log back in and found your character hacked ? Never got an email about password change from blizzard? Never got any email from blizzard regarding changes made to your account?
Yeah I call bs, if you're going to make things up at least make it believable.
I have a junk folder completely filled (as most people I know do...even those who never played wow) with emails about wow account hacked, update password, etc.
When they first started showing up (a long time) ago a quick search on google showed that these were phishing attempts.
So why would I take any of them seriously? especially if I could care less about a blizzard account of which I have zero interest in?
I get 5-15 of these a day.... I'm sure not going to waste my time checking the sender to see if any of these might be actually from blizzard.
If you havent already I would change your email password and check your email. 9 out 10 times they get into your account through your email. In fact if they added an authenticator to your account Blizzard will send you a notice in the email that it was activated. If you never saw it I would check your trash bin chances are they have your email password and they just got your password with that then added an authenticator so that they wouldnt be interrupted while they were doing whatever. I had my account hacked and I know for a fact they did it by going into my email which at the time had a crap easy password. But If you got your account hacked that is the first thing I would change.
The authenticator apps are free for iphone. So it doesn't cost you anything. I think it also may be for other companies as well. But seriously, this article gets front page?
I think its fairly common knowledge that if you don't have an authenticator on your account. Don't just assume that it will be safe. Also, staged? Really? C'mon, your not that important that Blizzard is running conspiracies just to sqeak out $6.50 from your pocket. Chances are.... yea. It probably was your fault.
That is crazy.
HOW are these accounts getting hacked? Why are authenticators needed? Blizzard has a problem.
Before you answer listen to my situation:
I left WoW two and a half years ago. I have the email confirming my account cancellation.
I decided to come back for Cataclysm and when I went to log onto my Blizzard account it said I had the wrong password. In fact, my account was tied to a Battle.Net account ( I didn't even HAVE one back then). My account was hacked.
IMPORTANT FACTs:
1. I have never had WoW on this PC (built it in June).
2. I did not have WoW on my previous PC (built about two years ago...it's my hobby, I like building PCs)
3. When I did call Blizzard to get my account back they said the account was hacked (only activity) TWO MONTHS ago.
HOW DID THEY GET MY PASSWORD?
Did I buy Gold? No.
Did I give my account info to someone? No. I'm an older player, married with an infant daughter in my own house.
So how did this happen?
I haven't been able to figure it out. I don't think it's any kind of conspiracy but I would love to know how these accounts get hacked!
I've have never had any game account hacked. Am I lucky? Not sure. I think the majority of people fall for phishing scams that spoof email addresses. Blizzard will never send you an email about your password being reset, account getting hacked, etc. Never click on a link in an email. Always type in the address for yourself. While you are at it make sure you use a 2nd email account for junk/game/whatever. Don't use the same ID and password on every site, every game, etc. Change your passwored often and make sure it is complex...numbers, special characters. If the system will allow you to use pass phrases use them. "The d0g is F4st!" is an example.
How much of this shit is it going to take before Blizzard owns up and does an investigation, because they ARE being compromised. There have been far too many people with no legitimate reasoning as to how their login information could have been leaking, waking up to find their accounts compromised.
Oh wait, they won't. They will continue to blame the players (which granted, often are at fault in this case) and keep bilking people for money.

This is a strange story.
Even though you claimed "the game wasn't your cup of tea" in the first place, look what you're doing.
I'm still not sure why you'd try and log into your OLD account after FIVE YEARS just to do.. what..... exactly?
You claim you had "zero interest" in the Blizzard account, yet you go to your friend's house half a decade later to log in and check your "old character", of which you have zero interest in.

Someone who gets access to your email account has all the information they need to hack your account, hack it repeatedly and remove any evidence that they have access to your account.
I haven't played in a long time, but my account was hacked as well. I downloaded the expansion, and tinkered a little on it, but I've never bought gold or anything, or given out info, and mine ended up hacked. I'm not sure what's going on, but blizzard needs to do something about this rash of hack breakouts.

I was at a friends house (who's big into WoW) . He was trying to get me to try it again so we were curious as to level and where he was parked as well as seeing if I were to play if I should just start fresh or continue on with him. Tried logging in. Pretty unbelievable eh?
I've logged into other accounts after not playing for long periods of time as well. Tried EQ1 after not playing for a couple years...... Tried LoTRO again after not playing for awhile (lifetime member so easy to do).
Never checked in on an old MMO after a period of not playing?

After half a decade??? Nope.
If I'm gone from a game that long, it's kaputskis.
If I was gone THAT long, I don't care what happens to my account or my toon as long as someone didn't steal my credit card info.
But then again, after half a decade... that card was LONG expired. Besides, if WoW wasn't your cup of tea, why would you check in just to see the toon since you already knew you weren't going to be resubbing and playing WoW?
You could just lok up the toon on Blizzard's website by character search to do that, not log into an account.
As a matter of fact, if I had any interest in looking up old toons... I can do that with just about any game out through their sites and character search so...

Thats you... not me. In fact, my current MMO I'm playing is Age of Conan which I started at launch and left and just recently tried again.
If you think I'm lying then use your character search on Age of Conan's website and look at the recently reactivated character "Palazious"!!

One would think that the longer time goes by, the more interesting it would be to revisit an old mmorpg (assuming the game was alive and well). A RL friend encouraged him to do it. Hell, if I had any RL friends that played and they tried to get me to check out the game again while over at their place, I'd probably get some booze and say wth, let's do it.
What are you really getting at here, I just don't see your issue?

My account was hacked once.. I was letting my nephew play on my account as I was not using it (due t a deployment) and I'm pretty sure he gave the info to a guildmate (fake friend) and they changed the password. Blizzard was really awesome about getting my account back. I'm on the East Coast, so luckily, I can call til 11pm. I did wait on hold for awhile, but once I got through they were awesome and fast about getting my account back and getting my stufficis back.
Less the hold time, I would give their customer service a 10.

Yeah... I'm going to have to go with everyone and and say that there's plenty of reasons why someone might try out a game again several years after quitting.
There are several reasons why someone might quit a game. Becoming too busy in life, being bored with the game, or frustrated with bugs, balance, stability of the game, etc. Any number of these issues being resolved is a reason for a player to decide to try the game out again, even several years later.
I know I've done it before. I quit Ultima Online 6 years ago, and just a month ago I came back for a bit just to check out how the game was. I didn't stick around, but the point is that I was curious enough to check out my old stompnig grounds.
Oh god it's so hard to download a free app on your phone or dial a 1-800 number. Are you really complaining that blizzard gives you free options to secure your account?
Oh god it's so hard to download a free app on your phone or dial a 1-800 number. Are you really complaining that blizzard gives you free options to secure your account?
Not everyone has a smart phone to get the 'free' mobiel authenticator.
Besides, this still just ignores the likelyhood of a security loophole in Battle.net.
But it's the user's fault, always. Even if Blizzard makes a crappy authentication system, it's still the user's fault. If the user doesn't plug Blizzard's security holes themselves, it's their own fault... yup... Blizzard is really doing a bang up job, well, for what they can do with their millions of dollars in profit.
played wow off and on for a year or so before the whole battle.net thing was forced upon us and never got hacked...within a month of re-subbing and going thru battle.net...hacked
got it back relatively plainly enough and yep was a gold seller...
so got the authenticator and played for awhile got bored with wow and unsubbed, within six weeks start getting emails from blizzard(and yes it was blizzard not some phishing site) saying that I had requested a password/username change...I was like wtf i'm not even playing and sure enough tried to log in to wow and even tho authenticator was on the account...could not log on after trying to get support for my issue...haha...what a joke...was like f' this, same day got another email from blizzard saying that my account could be suspended cause it was suspected that I was trying to sell my account, at that point wrote an email to blizzard and told them where they could stick my wow account . then I proceeded to uninstall wow from my pc and my life...good f'ing riddance. never had a problem with hacking until battle.net forced down my throat, g'd blizzard buncha f*cktards lol. and before anyone says I did this or that to get hacked...no I did not. guarded my account info like it was gold, didn't use addons or go to suspect sites.
I think a few different things have happened over the years. First was the B.net merge, which is how my account got hacked the one-and-only time. Not even a week after I merged with B.net (on an email I only used for WoW and the password was vastly different), I lost access to my account. Way to go Blizz-tard!
The second is a few months ago, many of my friends (many non wow players) had their Hotmail accounts hacked. Even people who hadn't used their Hotmail in weeks had their accounts hacked, so I think there was a huge security issue with Hotmail there for a while.
The third thing perplexes me and while I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist, it makes me wonder. How is it when I create a new account (whether it be a real new account or just a trial), and use a brand new email, I somehow get an email shortly after from a bogus sender talking about how my account has been hacked and that I need to click on the link and log in with my username password. (Obviously not going to do it because it's obviously a phishing site) How do the hackers know my new email already? Either the hackers are in the WoW network somehow... or I don't know.
P.S. I'm earning my degree in IT Security and I was hacked, so for you idiots who think you are paragons of security and protection and think that you are secure: Nothing is secure. It's just a matter of how hard someone wants to get the information.

This may surprise people... but hackers also use brute force crackers, so the complexity of your possword is key.
Also, any Blizz employee selling account info would have to be decently high up to not get busted for it, just a thought.

What are you really getting at here, I just don't see your issue?
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb
6 years, me and my fiance play all the time. 6 years, no hacks.
