A scifi mmo: would you rather have it be steampunk or cyberpunk?

GintohGintoh Member UncommonPosts: 329

I like both of these, lets say there was a scifi mmo, not fantasy coming out It's a sandbox game. If you had top choose would you rather have it be steam punk or cyberpunk and why?

Cyberpunk.  The environment creates the ability for devs to make anything and have it fit.  Thinking along the lines of eXistenZ, 13th floor, Dark City etc.  The game can go anywhere and anytime in simulation and it still makes sense.

Cyber. . you should add a poll maybe.   I can't stand steam punk. . it is what turns me off of so many MMOs out there.  I don't want to see people casting spells and others driving around in crazy cars with large gears and blue hues. . . cyberpunk is long overdue!

    cyberpunk. because it's cool.

tho, i would like to see something like Final Fantasy 7. the setting, not the system.

I would really like to see a well done sci-fi / fantasy cyberpunk mmo, like the shadowrun system, cause it fits in every way.

Id say steampunk. It wouldnt really have to have magic. Something akin to the novels Leviathan and Behemoth (Clankers vs. Darwinists) would make a fantastic MMO. (NO magic in this IP)

Another good example would be China Mievilles Bas Leg books - Fantastic Steampunk setting (with Magic)

Id like Cyberpunk but I dont know how well things like Hacking could be added & made to work in a group setting (Minigame??). Plus to make the huge urban sprawl of a world would be a bit of a resource hog unless the buildings were all just there for looks and you couldn't enter them.

Really either setting would be a welcome departure from the typical Fantasy/SCi FI/ Super hero genres MMOs are stuck in.

For an MMO, I think I would rather Steampunk. It's easier to work into lore and gives a better feel in a game world.

However, I enjoy Cyberpunk much more than Steampunk. It would be alot more work and planning to do Cyberpunk properly. Otherwise, it's just going to turn out looking like crap, no matter how good the graphics are.

Neocron was cyberpunk but I never played it. :(

Perfect MMO=SWG crafting+Eve depth and territory control stuff+Cyberpunk System+Skill based FPS combat system. Oh and Open PVP, but with tough consequences for criminalsmaking it so that you have to be skilled and cunning to be one, not like MO where you can just run around ganking people will nilly like you feel like it with no real planning involved. I would say in Eve Terms, 40 percent would be high sec, 40 percent null sec, and 20 percent low sec.

I hate how Sandbox games turn into gankfests, I like PK's to be in the game, but make it so that they are real life crims where the risk of being one is great, but if you are clever and avoid the penalties and bounty hunters the rewards are great.

A question: Would there be some way to merge steam punk and cyberpunk into one unique setting that is separate from both genres?

While not MMO's, I loved both Shadowrun for the genesis, and Arcanum for PC. I guess my vote is one for cyber and one for steam. Make 'em both.

    Tyrust - EQ
    Proximo - EQII
    Proximo - Warhammer Online
    Fogerty - Vanguard

Would love to see a full-on steampunk MMORPG with a unique setting.

That said, a Cyberpunk MMO could be great too.  Sort of an MMORPG take on Dystopia (HL2 mod) might be fun.  Corps vs. Punks.  Real world and Cyberspace.

Although the more I think about it, neither feels like a great fit for typical MMORPG gameplay.  I'd be a little apprehensive about cutting out the elements which don't fit perfectly either (like crafting: you can imagine program-creation as crafting, but really cyberpunk isn't really much about crafting at all -- and yet that's one of the feature-pillars that makes MMORPGs work well.  Remove that feature and I'm not 100% confident that the results would be fun.)

So perhaps I'd actually prefer non-MMO entries for both of these settings.

    Cyberpunk, blade runner style.

Or maybe even a Paranoia mmo, although that would be hard to pull off as an mmo.

Would like to see them both, but if I had to choose one would probably be cyberpunk. In the William Gibson sense of the word.

Why would a Cyberpunk MMO not have crafting?

  • pierthpierth Member UncommonPosts: 1,494

I'd have to vote for cyberpunk. WoW seems to have a really bastardized steampunk atmosphere that feels completely disjointed with swords, bows, tanks, motorcycles and magic.

I don't really know the difference between the two, but whatever Shadowrun is. I'd love, absolutely love, to see a Shadowrun MMO. I hate Microsoft.

    ditto on the Bladerunner cyber

Victorian-age Steampunk would be awesome. (like steamboy anime for example, or automail from FMA)

And ofcourse with only humans, different races would ruin a good steampunk game.

I would make a difference between nations instead of races. Every nation should have it's own kind of steampunk. (no magic what so ever)

I would love a setting like shadowrun for an MMO, with both fantasy and cyberpunk elements.

Actually this is one of the things i like about WOW (or rather the whole Warcraft IP), it manages to combine a high fanatasy setting (with elves, orcs, swords and bows) with a pretty advanced technology level (tanks, planes, mecha-like constructs, AI... hell it's more advanced than IRL) without making it one big nonsencial mess, and without relying to deeply on magitec.

WHFB was supposed to be something similar, bot they never got it right.

    Cyberpunk

Steampunk is passing trend, and it was never really fully realised. How many books or tv shows you know with true steampunk theme ?

    And its fantasy

On other hand Cyberpunk is pure Sci-Fi based on facts , and is probably what await us in close future

  • ShadusShadus Member UncommonPosts: 669

I'd prefer cyberpunk over steampunk although a nice magi-tech/steam-punk jules verne theme would be a nice change from all the high fantasy.

My first thought would be steampunk, but as stated above, steampunk is more a fantasy setting than sci-fi one. But if a real sci-fi steampunk would be made, where we fly across the stars with some off gnomish device, I'd jump in for sure :D

Problem with cyberpunk (to me) is that it's too much computer based. Read the player & GM books of the Alternaty RPG system for instance. A whole section about cyber is spend there, and it's also warned not to overdo it, since it's mostly bits & bytes you play.

Then again, I guess with cyberpunk OP means a technical, non-fantasy sci-fi setting as EVE has brought it. If that's the case, I'll pass and stick with steampunk.

  • GintohGintoh Member UncommonPosts: 329

I mean like Deus Ex cyberpunk. Bleak dystopian future setting with a Film-Noir feel and some stuff to do with corporations and nano bots and computers as those seem to always be part of a cyberpunk setting.
