there is a reason why AO vet are voicing their discontent.

Spoiled former AO players, I know enough about them. Good riddance. I am glad to see many of them gone from the game.

As for the sloopy performance issue, when i encounter it 1st thing i do is check the official forum and guess what....a lot of people are having the same problem. I'm not sure if currently it's fix or not but based on your arguement i would say maybe it's fix now.

Yep, game runs great now, and it also did a year ago (january) earlier this year. I might think the connection to my toons feels a little more "in touch" now, like how smooth like it is in WOW, but not sure. It is any way running great.

Contrary to your belief, we AO vet are fully functional human being just like you. When we see a dog shit, our brain can analyze just like you do and come to the conclusion that it is a pile of dog shit.

Again; former spoiled AO brats almost caused AO's doom. No news there. Why not check out the current status before posting ancient "news"? If you are a "fully functional being", are you not able to understand the difference between to past & now? Theres no problem digging up tons of posts in WoW forum where people are whining about its performance. That doesnt make the game 'unstable'. Whiners are the ones who cry loudest. Those who are pleased are usually keeping their mouths shut and focus upon the game.

So instead of posting childish post like "don't believed those vet player they don't know shit" why don't you go to the official forum and maybe you can dig up on problem what we vet have face.

Those 'childish' words are yours, not mine. Grow up.

I am not interested in multiple forums. Beside, AO forum is notoriusly known for being packed with angry & bitter fanbois bashing the game for whatever they can. Definately not a good place to be.  Worse than WoW forums. Full of people I am not interesed interacting with whatsoever.

As a die-hard AO fan RL friend of mine described AO forums; "I refuse to use it, it is full of arch-trolls."

But i'm kinda happy for your blissfulness of the lame dev and their effort to improve the game.

Poor you; did the devs not listen to you years ago? Game has improved. You might not think so. That doesnt mean everyone needs to swallow your opinions. You do understand that people are fully capable of making their own?

Recent addition of cash shop selling armor bleh...

Here you nail 'it' just as I suspected. Former vet players suddenly not so "OP" anymore. The inevitable has happened, and that was just exactly what AO needed. 1 player away & 10 in = win win. I am more than happy spending my hard earned cash on cool items ingame. No need to be jealous just because you cannot afford it.

You should know that the real life is way more harsh & unfair than the virtual life you are offered in AO.

More modern games? I have played most MMO's, and your opinion here is just subjective. Of all games I have played, theres absolutely none who offer so deep & complex game mechanics as Anarchy Online. You find better graphics ofc, but those I have played are a shallow shell where you dont need to use your brains at all; They are 'right click' & autoplay.

Ok i rest my case. I see no point in even making any point.

May you enjoy yourself in AO and have a happy life.

    Cheers and happy hunting ^^

I can argue some points here. Deep char customization? hardly, each class has prefered skills so anyone with half a brain goes for those, aka Cookie cutter builds.
Almost everyone ends up using the same weap and armor in the end too.

If they going to make it modern they need a complete overhaul of models (especally player models) to textures and then some, adding prettier water or shadows is not near enough to consider it "modern".

P.S. I hated the UI change I prefer the old orignal UI the game had, I've hated all others since due to them making it take 2-5x the amount of clicks to access the same stuff that you used to be able to do in one.

I quit AO because past a certan level soloing becomes a non-option due to how the enemys scale at higher levels, either take forever to kill even for greens with you having to spam heals, and if you can't heal yourself.. well forget soloing past lv 130 or 150. Quests could use some better implementation yes the mission booths is nice but I'd like some real quests in game, even if they just end up being mission instances in the end. Sounds wise.. I never had an issue with AO, spell effects.. yeah they could be prettier, almost all NT spells are bascally the exact same effect with a diff color variation for example.

I been thinking of making a froob acct just to see how populated the game is, and then maybe opening my acct. I am actually fairly shocked AO is still around now a days. So many mmo's from its time have been long shut down.

"An MMORPG could be completely diffirent from WoW. Just look at games like Dofus, Wizard101 or EVE. But as it is, most of the Western MMOs are trying to succeed by out-WoWing WoW. It's like an army of 10 sports games made about same sports, and barely none about other sports. WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words."

Good lord, I just checked screenshots of this aging game and saw that it still has the same lousy gfx after all these years. They have been talking about that new gfx engine for years now and I think it's safe to say it will never materialize .

If you are a min-maxer only after getting the absolutely best out of your toon, you  will be a standard 'cookie cutter' toon, like in every MMO. If thats what you seek, so be it. Game is very advanced, and it offers a variety of playstyles within each class. Today I even saw a L21 trader with Stygian Desolator. You may claim everyone is standard, but it is not true. Let me take doc for example? I think the doc can use about every single weapon category, and still be effective. Theres tons of weapons to choose from. Same goes for MP. How many different weapons for the soldiers? Tons as well. Adventurers? Likewise. It seems you have forgotten how the game works, or you are just after the last 1%. I am always trying to come up with something new. Too bad you seem unable to renew yourself.

If they going to make it modern they need a complete overhaul of models (especally player models) to textures and then some, adding prettier water or shadows is not near enough to consider it "modern".

Time will show how the GFX engine will work. I was myself a bit sceptic to the GFX after I thought I too had become a GFX addict. My son used that as an arguement too before returning. I asked him today about the graphics, and he, like myself, concluded we dont mind. I am not paying any attention to the GFX. It is not something I reckon as bad, nor as 'great'.

P.S. I hated the UI change I prefer the old orignal UI the game had, I've hated all others since due to them making it take 2-5x the amount of clicks to access the same stuff that you used to be able to do in one.

I truly hated the UI before. Because I am 100% keybinder. It was always the reason why I did not return to AO before. Just by a coincidence when I was so bored in a trial on EvE I checked AO; I instantly became very hyped when I read the patch notes about all keys could be reassigned.

I quit AO because past a certan level soloing becomes a non-option due to how the enemys scale at higher levels, either take forever to kill even for greens with you having to spam heals, and if you can't heal yourself.. well forget soloing past lv 130 or 150.

Heres a leveling guide for you. Enjoy. (Was not hard to find. Google next time perhaps?)

I agree. Game would definately benefit from more quests. This is me and your opinions though. Theres enough themepark MMO's on the marked. I also like it as it is, so it is definately not a must from my side.

I never had an issue with AO, spell effects.. yeah they could be prettier, almost all NT spells are bascally the exact same effect with a diff color variation for example.

12 million WoW players seems quite satisfied with the same casting & attack animations; they havent even got as many colors as cast animations in AO. Minor concern from my side. Theres better way to improve the game I think.

I been thinking of making a froob acct just to see how populated the game is, and then maybe opening my acct. I am actually fairly shocked AO is still around now a days. So many mmo's from its time have been long shut down.

I was shocked last night when we came out of the grid in Borealis after being in Temple of Three Winds. It was packed with people all the way from grid to past Fair Trade. I first thought there was some attack from either Clanners or Omnis, but it was just people hanging around. Fantastic! Honestly; it was like back in the good old days :)

I hope you will enjoy your return. GG!

I have been speculating a bit aobut this myself; so much work that has been put into this, why seem it all just a waste? Well, new Gaming Director, Colin 'Means' Craigg meant that former 'man in charge' Gaute Godager was sent out the doors. What I am sure about  is that there was probably lots of commotion in FC's HQ both before and after this. So far, Means seem to be doing a great job in FC. The GFX project has been postponed so many times before 'Means' arrival that the whole GFX engine went out of date. Today I personally belive we will see the GFX engine hitting the servers next year. I would defintately not put any money on that a year ago. Unlike today.

I stumbled across this thread while searching for information on Anarchy Online (had nothing to do with what i was looking for hehe). I figured i would give my two cents to the future people who stumble apon this thread.

I am an average computerholic I have played numerous MMORPGs some from betas if that is going to give me a Certificate for giving my opinion (lol): Matrix Online , Starwars Galaxies, Everquest 1 and 2 , World of Warcraft  and Anarchy Online of course... i still play most of them (Eq2 for life!) that are still around but when it comes down to it I prefer Anarchy and EQ2 ; Yes Anarchy has outdated graphics but when i see updates to the news section regarding graphical changes i think common sense tells me that they are infact working on change.

Secondly regardless of how many people play i have never seen Anarchy Online get less people such as Matrix online ( one time a couple years ago i logged on and there was only 4 people online) the people(s) complaining about the LAG... I have played the game on a very old gaming system and my alienware laptop and i have not experienced any lag the person in previous post has stated except a few years back which was taken care of just recently.

As for it not being populated i guess it depends on if you like to solo or like to be in a group; i personally don't care: being in Tower/Temple of Three Winds  soloing by myself , enjoying the scenery then having a trail of mobs come attack me due to some dink training back to the beginning of the dungeon , but there is still A LOT of people that play that game.

Chrisel's posts regarding Anarchy Online has been the most helpful that i have read if i was looking for it  and i do agree the game is complex and is a challenge for thoes looking for it and it is what keeps me coming back to the game and will always no matter what... if that is not your type of game play then stick with the fluff games that you can auto-follow and one click.

Regardless I may have not played the game from the start and i may not be a so called "Veteran" but i have enough common sense to know if i enjoy a game ( maybe not agree with some little UI issues , etc) im still going to play it BUT PLEASE if you are going to leave a small review from PAST  experience atleast do CURRENT research and get the information before being misleading to people looking for a new and free mmorpg.

Seriously makes me wonder how many of these people are going to contradict themselves when the game's new engine comes out and end up playing again.

AO I've tried and AO has failed to draw me in.

Its just dosnt feel right, overly complicated and so frustrating to use.

I just felt stressed playing it!

I have just started playing again after reading this thread. Have to say I am having a good time with it. Yeah, but it does feel very outdated and unintuative compared to modern mmo's which it is clearly not. It's the core gameplay that grabs you here I think  and it still has a lot to offer. Nooby island is full of people playing at all hours. That does change when you get into the game itself but even so. There is a much larger population than I first realised. Don't know how long i'm sticking around for but having a blast playing it right now.

    Thanks jfad432! Thanks spookydom!

Most appreciated feedback; I cannot tell you the joy of others reporting the same about the game as I do. Hopefully 'some' mindless bashing of the game will stop as well as lots of personal attacks upon me.

As I now write, I am counting no less than at least 25 ppl just outside Fair Trade in Borealis. This is though, nothing compared to all the people I saw in Borealis last night. People are all over the place, running in & out of the grid, lots in TOTW etc etc.

Too bad you are unable to get into it. I met many who, unfortunately, said the same. No idea for how long you tried it? I can assure you that, when you learn it, it is might rewarding though! What level did you get to? If you struggled at lower levels, and had trouble understanding the game, I can try help you ingame. Just send me a PM if that is of any interest, then we could meet ingame when time allows?

Cheers all, I am happy :)

*IF* the new engine comes out, I'll likely give it a try. It was a fun game for its time. But we've been hearing about the new engine for literally years now.   As it stands, time has passed AO by.  That happens with any game, and AO is no exception.

Right now it seems AO is quite capable to keep up with the time considering all the activity online. AO might have played it's role for you, but that doesnt mean others can't enjoy it, like me. Even though I used to play it at it's release.

In the end, GFX aint what really matters the most anymore, even though I admit I used to be a GFX junkie myself. I love the variety, all the classes it offers (I prefer classless system) and the deep character development unrivalled by any other game I have played. On top of this, AO has gotten a cool item shop which I love to buy from. I definately used to be an 'altoholic' in WoW, but in AO it sure has a new meaning; Dual playing, with alts on both paid accounts, as well as a couple free2play accounts. It has plenty to offer for a restless & chaotic soul I possess.
