A "man" playing a female toon as about as gay as it gets.
I guess you haven't heard of some of the other things gay people do. Men having sex with other men is about as gay as it gets. Playing a female character is nothing.
It is something. It is a sign that you might want to search your soul and ask yourself if you are maybe a little gay if you play a female character.
I mean we are talking about a minimum of 50 hours playing a character in a game like this. That is a long time running around in the skin of a woman. You might want to think about comming out of the closet if you haven't already.
Yeah, I'm sure when I spent all that time playing Tomb Raider I was questioning my sexuality, and not just trying to get stuck in a corner so I can get a better angle on the polygonal honkers.
Your logic be infallible.
If a game has no choice for you to choose anything about your character, the game itself is 100% different than what has been discussed here. I agree that in those games like Tomb Raider, or Mirrors Edge....you play whatever it gives you and if the game is good you can see past that detail. It is when you literally have the choice of many different looks and types and you knowingly choose a woman that you have crossed an invisible line...one which might make you a little gay.
Oh, the old "It's not gay if you're forced into it" excuse. Did something bad happen to you that you need to talk about?
Yes...
I was playing World of Warcraft when it first came out and I became friends with a woman character in the game which was actually being played by a guy. He never told me he was a guy and in fact made flirts and danced and talked sexy talk as if he was his character. One day I wanted to invite him to a raid our guild was doing but they required Vent for the raid. He gets into Vent and...this is after months of flirting and sexy talk.....I hear his voice and he then tells me and I am shocked to the core that this virtual woman is not a woman at all.
He clearly had some issues and those issues spilled into his game. If you play a female character in an MMO you might be a litte gay. THat isn't so bad to admit. Many here are taking offense to this for some reason.
I play femchars all the time, and when dudes are dumb enough to hit on me, I say something like "that's hot baby! hold on, I'm gonna pull out my d**k". Hillarious for me, traumatizing for them.
Anyone trying to flirt in an MMO has it coming, it's pathetic, and deserves one of those showers where you can't scrub off the filth no matter how hard you try.

Not if I had the choice. I tend to rp off and on and can not think of one logical reason why I would want to be the girl. Guess it is a leftover from my D&D days of sitting around playing through campaigns it would just be extemely wrong to be sitting around a table of your buddies and rping a girl.
Well theres the borderline of it being a problem/not a problem. If you're just playing the character to just play then that's not a problem, who cares what other people think, mainly people troll another for any reason possible just to try and irritate others over the internet about why they are playing an opposite gender. If you are RPing the opposite gender and making people think you are that gender then there's the issue.
This topic is brought up so much I'm surprised the opposite isn't mentioned about females who play male char's. Females who play male char's usually respond with "so I don't get hit on". I believe it's mainly what toon looks more attractive to the player regardless of being male/female. If most females dont play female chars because of reasons for getting hit on in game, obviously they don't know how to foil the situation. They can easily say they are male IRL and get over the topic and move on.
Honestly who cares what people play in game. This is not a social dating network. It's an MMO. If you want to date people go to a dating website, your local popular social hangout and try your luck there. The chances of getting hitched in a game are RARE.
Also about your D&D escapade. I'm sure theres people who are good buddy's with each other and have no insecurities about themselves and wouldn't mind RP'ing a female char to liven up the social event and have some good laughs. I guess it all depends how secure you are around your buddies. You may think its wrong, other people may find it extremely hillarious. That's why we have comedians to this day, because they don't mind stepping out of their comfort zone.
everyone is gay; its just a question of how far you are in the spectrum of gayness(not really a word is it?). If this makes you mad or offended than you certanly are denying your masculine or feminine side which can cause cancer in your brain if you surpress it. Its hard to believe but most football players in the NFL are gay. How could "macho men" such as those noted above be gay?
But yes I play as a female character when I play a monk, healer, cleric because they suit the Role playing aspect of a certain class. To the ones who do it for eye candy ; hey whatever gets you off bud.

Wait wait wait!.... You mean all those fighting games I played, where a female character had my favorite style of combat, choosing her made me gay??? You mean I should've chosen a male character to preserve my mascunality?! Oh the tragedy!

lol Karble has some insecurities, he might be just... a little gay. When he plays a female character on a fighting game, it makes him that much more gay to go home and start putting on womens clothes and makeup.

Yes, all that time you spent playing Chun Li turned you gay. You should have played Dhalsim, like me. It turned me stretchy.

Once again you are comparing games where you played it because the game was good and didn't give you an option of female or male.
If you look at the current MMOs you will also see extremly sexual dancing from the female characters. a great example is
this
This video shows real dances that are performed ingame. Pay close attention the the female dark elf. That is the one this guy was doing all the time in WoW. it is very sexy and very suggestive.

Yeah, I can see how you couldn't help yourself when givin the temptation to hit on some dude. That's pretty hot, and you totally can't see any penis during the entire thing. Anyone could have made the same mistake. *snicker*
Seriously though, I'd hit it, but it's obvious that's a chick. You were narfing on polygons, man.

The person was playing a female character and representing themselves as a female in real life.
This is the equivalent to me of abusing MMO ethics. This type of misrepresentation should be a banable offense.
Another example of misrepresentation
It's just wrong on so many levels. BANABLE OFFENSE!!!!
In alot of games I make a few avatars and then see which ends up being my main. Mostly gender depends Class and armor options
It also depends on Avatar creation. COX and STO Are really good at this and both my mains ended up being male.(and if the Avatar creation for WoDo is the same as the new EvE C.C. then I'll probably be a male there too.)
I'm also like alot of other guys in not always wanting a warrior that is a hulking mass.
Frankly I'm glad a guy with female alts isn't such a taboo now, and people got off the high horse they were on.
As far as GW2? From the screens I've seen, I highly dout if I try the Sylvari that it'll be a male, and if I try a Asura I dout it'll be Female. Just my visual taste.
probably 90% of the toons I have in various games are female. I have two young daughters who I let create and name my toons and they always create females. I really don't care as it's just a game. Yes, my toons get hit on at times, but I just ignore the person and go about my business. No big deal really.
I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.
I just don't care what others think. I'm not going to hide my gender if asked when playing a female character but nor do I give a damn about conservative values of some whackjob idiot. I'll play what I want to play.
I've never played as a female character in an MMO before, it's too awkward. I always just make my characters look as much like me as possible, because I'm not ugly or anything (unless I make a goblin or something, then i just do whatever looks... coolest). I'm sure a lotta dudes who make female chars are probably leaning towards gay, or are ugly, "flamboyant", or many other explanations. But if you were gay you'd probably just make a dude and act gay online anyways, i dunno.
If you are a dude, make a female character in an online game and assume the role of a female in said game, you're probably gay or confused, or maybe just really desperate. I don't need to make my character a female because looking at a dude's butt all day isn't as sexy. That sounds like a really lame excuse for someone trying to assure themselves that they aren't gay. Do you also masturbate to your character? Because that's what porn is for (or your partner for sex), so there's no need to do it in a game and that's just pathetic.
Also with games like Tomb Raider or Mirror's Edge (which I've played) there is quite a difference. First, you don't get to pick what your character is like. Second, there's only 1 storyline and that character you play fits into the story only one way (aka it just wouldn't make sense if it were a dude). Third, IT'S NOT ONLINE so it's not like you can "act" like a female in those games anyways. I can't type a message like "thanks for the group sweety! " to a bunch of people and make them think i'm a chick.
Some people say chicks look cooler in games, that the male characters don't look as good for certain classes (like maybe an assassin). Ok, i'll buy that. But that's about it. And that's pushing it.
Every time I talk to "chicks" in online games, i call them dudes because i'm fairly certain about 90% of female characters are indeed dudes. So i guess that just goes to show there are quite a few dudes out there who are fine with playing as female characters, most likely for one of the reasons i listed. I know one guy who made several male and female characters in games, and he's bisexual (and a loser living in his parents' basement, just a side note). I know one dude who made female characters in games and he's my friend, but he's pretty ugly to be honest. I've known tons of people throughout my life who played MMOs, and these are the reasons i've observed as to why dudes play female characters. I for one am proud to be a man, just as women should be proud to be women. If you aren't proud, then get a sex-change or cross-dress, but do it so that all parties involved are aware. Or just be a big loser (looser as many people like to spell it for some reason), i don't care.
Guys who create only male characters are the ones who are insecure with themselves. If you were really that confident about yourself, you wouldn't give a damn if you were making a female or male character. Unless you're a heavy roleplayer, you shouldn't care.

I just read your post and went ... WTF!?
But then I saw your nicname ... you manly man you.
Only if the female character was attractive. And didn't have a really annoying voice (the Miquote in FFXIV come to mind). I already assume that the majority of female characters in MMOs are played by males, and automatically treat them as such. So I guess I really don't see what the big deal is with doing so...

the other side of the coin of course, the female character played by a female, who tells the irrittating 'oink' thats pestering her, that she's actually a male so, leave her alone.. kind of thing.. but the implication too, is that if a female player, creates a male toon, then she must really be a lesbian.... This particular subject crops up so often, its really stupid, the only people who care about it, are generally those whose reasoning is, .. to put it 'mildly' barely out of the gutter.. and their reasons for playing games seems to be more than a little suspect.

That's pretty gay, dude. You'd better check yourself.
Maybe next time, remind yourself not to fall in love with somebody's pixels. They don't always represent the real person.

People really try to hit on female characters in game. I've been playing these games for over 6 years and I've never seen it. I think it's a myth.
Silly thread is silly. I grew up playing as Mario and Link, but my parents never sat me down and asked me if I secretly wanted to be a man when I grew up, or if perhaps I liked Princess Peach a tad too much. The sheer amount of sexual insecurity in these types of threads is simply amazing.
Honestly, the vast majority of people don't care what you play. Just have fun and enjoy the game.
New to MMOs eh? Congrats
oh yeah, especially in F2Ps.

To the homophobes,
everyone is gay; its just a question of how far you are in the spectrum of gayness(not really a word is it?).
-I am here to perform logic

Guys who create only male characters are the ones who are insecure with themselves. If you were really that confident about yourself, you wouldn't give a damn if you were making a female or male character. Unless you're a heavy roleplayer, you shouldn't care.
playing a female character and roleplaying one even while talking to people in /tell is wrong and should be a banable offense if you are a male.
Because you might hit on them and then feel all awkward and insecure about your sexuality when you find out you were talking dirty to a guy.
Rofl. Seeing guys fight with each other over something like this and this thread in general is pretty awesome.
Easy solution, ban the lowlifes who pester female characters in games.... problem solved.
