Some people say that it's very bizzare to play as another sex in an online game
Some people also say that we don't live on the surface of a globe, but on the inside of a hollow sphere. What can you do about those "some people"? Have a good laugh.
Some people say that it's very bizzare to play as another sex in an online game, do you think it's simply fun and for the look, do people take this too seriously, or is it linked to an identity problem?
These people haven't read the results of the Daedalus Project, a scientific research of mmogs. Google it and you'll find that males playing as females is very frequent. The mains of most of my friends and mine are females simply because they're sexy.
But as you asked it in the GW forum, I find it interesting to note that different mmog communities react differently to this matter. In SWG, my guild found weird that I, a man in real life, was playing with a female character (nvm the ugly models ;(
I know this was asked of the GUYS, BUT......I'm going to turn the question from the OP around and respond to the female version of the question, "Would you play a male character as a girl?"
My answer is:
Definitely yes. I have, I do, and I will. I always have characters of both genders. Why? Because it's fun to role play them and....some classes and races just lend themselves more to the male form to me. My main is almost always female, but I absolutely always have male characters that I play as well.
I see no issues with it for men OR women to role play either or both genders. I mean....these are mmoRPGs we're playing here. I think the RPG part is left out far too often.

WOW i just skimmed thru this thread and have to add my 2 cents....If a person needs to live life with their avatar as a deep essential part of their life, then they need way more help than any single psycologist could handle. they need a team of specialist to help them. In the end they will all become drug enduced and zombiified soles trying to dribble the same swoop of dribble as the zombie next to them, sad sad day.....
I wish some graduate students would hurry up and do psychological profile comparisons for people who like to play characters of the opposite sex, don't care either way, or won't play characters of the opposite sex.
I think it would be really interesting to see the actual reason behind this type of decision.
For me personally, I could care less if one of my friends plays a female character. Although I do mess with them about it. They all use the same lame excuse "I'd rather stare at a girl's butt"... I never have understood that excuse and I don't feel that is is the actual reason behind the choice.
That is unless these people are just so sexually depraved or homophobic that need to see pixel butt / can't stand the thought of looking at a guy's butt.
As far as playing a female character myself, I have in the past... but it never lasts very long. I'm not morally opposed to it, like some seem to be. It's just that when I play these games (starting with MUDs and then UO) I put myself into the game. I try to make a character as close to me as I can, or at least something that doesn't look completely horrible (Aion).
When I play a female, or dwarf, or non-human-ish race I never get very far because I feel no connection with my character. I always end up getting bored and quitting, or rerollling a more male human looking race.
Soooo.... there you go.
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
When I play a female, or dwarf, or non-human-ish race I never get very far because I feel no connection with my character. I always end up getting bored and quitting, or rerollling a more male human looking race.
My friends kid with me because I refuse to make any type of character other than human. When I played WoW with them I had to play a Blood Elf because it was the most human looking character. I refuse to play a dwarf or a gnome or some kind of orc or beast. In War I played whatever was the most human. Bright Wizard was my favorite.
As for male/female I always play a male as my main and I will play females as alternates. I have no problem playing either sex and I do not feel that watching a female butt all day makes me feel more manly. It is a game and I play whatever sex I want. However, I do tend to stereotype.
For example, in Age of Conan, my Guardian and my Conqueror are both male but my Necromancer and my Priest of Mitra are female. In WoW, my warrior would be male while my hunter or mage would be female. This is not something that I plan, it just happens that way.
In Guild Wars 2, I will have a male main character but I have no clue what class I will play yet.
As for a few of my friends, a few of them play female characters exclusively and when I ask about it, I really do worry about their mental health. I have never had a sexual attraction to a computer character.

I'm happily female irl and I play both male and female characters. I create stories for them in my head and in GW2, I'd like to try MMO RPing so in the game, I will pretend to be male when I'm on my male character. I don't view this as any more 'dishonest' than an actor playing a character or just kids playing pretend; entertaining fun and certainly without any malicious intent.
If people want to make the opposite gender just to look at the pretty, I'm fine with that. If others want to play a fantasy version of themselves or how they want to be, I'm fine with that too. To each their own. I don't think that your avatar on a game reflects upon who you are in real life unless you want it to.

I would have said yes five years ago but about at that time I started to receave whispers from one guy wanting to have cyber-sex with me so now I only play male chars and don't have to deal with that sort of thing.
Was it Karble? Are you the one who traumatized him?
Useless response is useless but for your information I found it both amusing and creepy at the same time.
A "man" playing a female toon as about as gay as it gets.
I guess you haven't heard of some of the other things gay people do. Men having sex with other men is about as gay as it gets. Playing a female character is nothing.
It is something. It is a sign that you might want to search your soul and ask yourself if you are maybe a little gay if you play a female character.
I mean we are talking about a minimum of 50 hours playing a character in a game like this. That is a long time running around in the skin of a woman. You might want to think about comming out of the closet if you haven't already.
What does 'a little gay' mean, and why do you think that gay men would want to play female characters? It's neither representative of them (because they're men) nor sexually attractive to them (because they're gay), so wouldn't they be the least likely to make that choice?

Haha you nailed that shit on the head. Why would a gay man roleplay as a female? They have no attraction what-so-ever to females at all, playing as them or being with them. So the concept of playing a female toon must make you gay is counter-productive and that accusation alone is irrelevant. So this topic has just become null and void. -- I think the term he was trying to come up with is "Transexuals". But really now, playing a female toon doesn't make you a tranny. Doing things that tranny's do would. So Karble needs to "edumakate" himself. Seems like he skipped a few grades of school and it wasn't because he was an over-achiever...

As long as there are teenaged boys, confused by their burgeoning sexuality, so too will there be threads by aforementioned teenage boys trying to comprehend how on earth any straight guy could ever play a female in an mmo.
The only constant is that 15 years from now they too will be sick of the new generation asking the same damn question all over again.
Personally I prefer to play same gender as myself, but if a class or race is female only (such as a huntress class, or mithra in FFXI) and I want to play that class/race then obviously I will make a female character.

Have you ever been to South Beach or any community where gays are freely running around doing all manner of things?
Facts we need to look at in 50% of gay male relations. One is a top and the other is bottom. Now that being said there is a flamboyant flair that they use with clothing, body language, speech, and cosmetics that totally nails my point to the post for all to see. There are many gay males that find it perfect and "FABULOUS!!" to emulate women in many aspects of thier lives.
So why is it really such a stretch for you to understand them wanting to play as a sexy DIVA in an MMO.
Some people just don't seem to understand what you are talking about, as I am sure what I have typed here will fall on deaf ears of those that wish to think it's all innocent and daisies....until it's to late for them.
People like you remind me a little bit of the movie "Independance Day" when they were all up on the roof with welcome signs cheering.....then kaBOOOOOOOOM! Lights out.
lol......sad.... is just sad
So if we don't put a stop to males playing female characters, gay UFOs are going to blow us all up?

only if you giggled and then went to paint your toe nails.
I know plenty of men that do play female characters... and I make fun of them. As do most of my other friends. A lot.
I don't know many, though I do know a few, women that play 'male' characters. They typically do it so men/boys will leave them alone while they play.
I personally won't play as a female chracter because I would lose any type of immersion that I might hope to have in an MMORPG if I did. Just... no thanks. I also don't play small/fragile races in my MMO's either.... same reason.

Not all gays are flamboyant. Not all flamboyant gays are bottoms. Very, very few flamboyant gays want to be women. They may display characteristics more commonly associated with femininity but that doesn't mean they want to be women. If they did, they wouldn't be gay, they'd be MTF trans, which is something completely different.
As someone whose written from the perspective of both men and women who've had a broad range of sexualities, issues, fears, ambitions, political views etc. I really, really don't see how what gender I play on a video game reflects upon who I am in real life. I am not my characters, nor do I want to be. Actually if a game tried to force me into making a fantasy version of myself, I wouldn't play. I'm not interested in being 'in' the game, I want to play puppetmaster.
