There are many different fun factors which are more or less appealing to different people.
For example, the possibility to explore new places, to create / build something, or to become rich and/or powerful, even if that is virtual. I believe those are common fun factors that can be found in MMORPG. But, after some time, they will go away, because you would have explored all the places, you would have build everything possible, or you are rich/powerful at least to some extent.
So for me, there is another fun factor that seems very powerful because it will usually last longer or even not go away at all, and this is the adrenaline rush you get from full loot PvP games, because each time you encounter enemies, you risk something, and you can also win something, and each time the encounter and fight is quite unique as well.
So, would adrenaline rush be the ultimate fun factor of MMORPG?

I don't think so because I don't get it. Gambler's rush doesn't come to everyone for the same reasons and full loot PvP is one of those things for me. Death is a nuisance, I tend to avoid it, but I don't get adrenaline rush unless there is something at stake for example some E-sport tournament.

I agree. I get no rush from something like that because I see it as more of a waste of my time. Same reason I don't go to casinos. I worked for the money, why would I want to throw it away on the off chance I could get more, and not even that much more? The risk versus reward system in Full Loot games lends itself more towards losing your crap than actually gaining anything from the taken risk.
9 times out of 10, you'll lose your ass so on the 10th time you may win but your still in the hole. Not that thrilling of a prospect to me, to be honest.
The rush is nice, but it's too often met with the frustration of playing under bad overall PvP structure, mechanics, or the entire game design.
Once developers figure out how to make meaningful and risky PvP, without making it all feel like a gigantic waste of time in terms of time spent in a fantasy - I think it would be a powerful feature.
UO lacked a mature structure.
EvE is a spreadsheet with pretty graphics.
Darkfall is a grind and too group oriented.
Mortal Online doesn't actually work.
Lineage 2 was a major grind.
WoW has nothing meaningful, it's all separated from the actual world.
WAR had dreadfully dull mechanics and suffered from bad population distribution, and it was too structured like war was entirely fair.
AoC abandoned PvP.
SWG was a grind and had NGE.
DAoC had dull mechanics and it's too old.

I could go on
I recall leveling my first Horde toon on a PvP server (new server, so everyone was leveling) and after getting into contested areas there was most definitely a more foreboding aspect of it where threats could be around any corner, especially if I didn't have friends on with me. It was definitely fun for that extra bit of a rush and the thrill of PvP in the wide open world, but TBH after a couple months it just got really tiresome always having to watch my back- even in a game with such a minute penalty for death. It kept me a little more on edge and nervous than I care to be while playing a social game.
i agree with u NineDots
if there is limit i mean to reach and then overcome it!
Have you tried Darkfall after the Hellfreeze expansion?
Definitely not the ultimate for everyone. Personally I find open PVP utterly uninteresting and zergy. I get my PVP from good PVP games and my PVE from MMORPGs.
TBH I don't get a rush out of open PVP games at all, because most fights are so one-sided that it's clear from the onset which side will win.

I love a full loot system and pvp without it just seems so dull and boring since I started playing EVE. Back before BGs killed open world PvP in WoW I actually enjoyed the alliance/horde battles at Tarren Mill. We never won or lost anything but it was fun for a while. After playing EVE for a few years, PvP in most other MMOs just feels like I'm playing a mini game of TF2 or CS inside the MMO. Die, respawn, die, respawn...over and over with no sense of victory or loss. Some people are fine with that playstyle, but if I wanted to play a real FPS, I'd jump on steam and play one of the numerous ones on there that don't come with a $15 a month fee. For a monthly fee I expect a game to come with a full risk/reward system.
Skill-based PvP in a persistant world with full loot complete with a conquest system is amazing.

Conquest system in Darkfall. I can't tell you how awesome it is to fight over cities...
You should check out Darkfall -- it's the perfect FPS+MMO combination.
Different strokes for different folks.
I go to univeristy, a crazy family, have a job and a girlfriend. My idea of fun isn't stressing out whether I'm going to lose something or not. I have plenty of stress and drama in my life and that's why I stay away from Eve and Darkfall for the most part.
My idea of fun isn't going up against someone with nothing better to do than to try to grief other people. Being discouraged from socializing with new people because double crossing is considered a 'tactic'. Sorry but I'll pass.
For me, the ultimate fun factor is group play. I'm talking about fun group play, not zerg rushing with numbers like most RvR games like WAR, Darkfall, Aion etc.
I used to play a MUD Avendar that had all the drama and full loot pvp that paved the way for some of these sandbox MMO's. Back then I loved it. However, as I've gotten older and things in my life have advanced, I simply don't welcome the drama anymore.
Just because there is risk involved doesn't mean it has to be stressfull... how could a game cause stress anyways?
If you have to ask, something tells me I'm better off not trying to explain.
^ for real.... i'd much rather play a game where i stand to lose something when i die...... pvp with no consequnces is lammeeeeeeeeee

I'll split the gold with you.
I have played DF off and on for a bit, but I just cannot get into the locked 1st person view. I know it's vain, but I like to see more than just a hand or odd staff on my screen. EVE is my choice for quality PvP in an MMO.
Darkfall has a standard 3rd person view, you're only first person when casting spells or shooting arrows, to aim better. Use a melee weapon or sheath and it's 3rd person...
On topic, Darkfall provides the ultimate adrenaline rush for me, after an intense fight I can feel my heart beating. Amazing.
It's too bad Darkfall is full of griefing sociopaths not unlike EVE.
Most people don't care for the adrenalin rush of griefing and killing noobs.
Do you even know what griefing is?. Or are you just using it as a subjective term of feeling grief. Therefor you must have been griefed?
Not everybody take to the adrenaline rush very well. I've experienced many gamers influenced by adrenaline during and after a PvP confrontation, them being emotionally distressed for various reasons. Particularly if they didn't expect it. Hell i have been called an ahole and a jerk only out to make people quit many times in the past just catching people by surprise
Just to clarify following some of the replies, the adrenaline rush I am talking about is the complete opposite of stress in my case. I am super excited and I forget all my troubles, my job, my crazy family and stuff.
I tried Darkfall, but the game was just too dreary and uninspired. I can't live on PvP alone - there must be something larger to "fight for" - and a good reason to exist in the world.
It's an amazing feat for the team - to be sure, but unfortunately the game just isn't vibrant, visceral, or inviting enough.
It's sort of like EvE. Great meta-game - but pretty boring actual game. Sounds are crap, animations are rather poor, and the UI is awkward.
Well-funded developers need to understand that it's fully possible to have an immersive world with fantastic PvE - right alongside meaningful PvP with risks and excitement. What they have yet to understand, is that you can accomplish that with a smart design - and you don't need to compromise if you implement the proper mechanics and the right choices for how to separate those who want PvP and those who don't.
It's like all the interesting PvP happens in the small productions, because developers who care about such things can't get funding.
What we need is an AAA MMO with proper PvP and PvE - and I know how it could be done
Cool bro because you know me? lol. What I'm talking about is getting killed when you have to AFK to take a phone call for work and losing weeks worth of work over what, having to take care of real life?
I've played full loot MUDs, hell your character would eventually die if you died enough times. I really don't need a lesson on how much fun PvP with something to lose is.
Killing lowbies, harrassing someone because they are a girl, killing someone that's AFK. Zerging 1 person etc. Griefing in general, you should know what I'm talking about. It just blows. Full loot PvP brings out the worst in some kids.
The idea that there isn't fun to be had without something to lose is just ridiculous. By that theory you wouldn't play sports with friends because there's no championship at stake?
The idea that there's no enjoyment to be had
I get that rush from successfully completing challenges and excelling at what I do. Taking unnecessary risks (and pretty much evry risk in a MMORPG tends to be unnecessary) goes against that and creates stress that makes me lose that rush. The best rush I get is from taking an inherently risky situation, finding a risk-free aproach and beating the situation that way. That takes way more skill than just gambling and feels really good when you succeed.
I have hard time to believe you really get an adrenaline rush for this... certainly you can be happy, but really excited about it, I do not think so.
I do not know if it is actually an adreline rush but the feeling is 'nerdgastic'. You are trying to work out a problem and all of a suddend everything is falling into place. All your brain cells seem to work in unison and all your neurons seem to fire at the same time. It's an amazing feeling.
On the other hand I find rollercoasters to be a bit of a downer.
You get that from playing a game? Games are pretty easy, dude.
