Like others have said, Rift is a carbon copy of parts of other big name games and brings nothing new to the table. Examples: The rogue class uses 5 combo points to use finishers. The warrior class uses 3 combo points to use finishers. WoW: Overpower/Rift: Inescapable Fury: Keys off dodge cannot be dodged/parried/blocked. Put 2 points in the skill tree, 100% crit. Carbon copy from WoW. Those are only 2 examples but you better believe this is ALL across the board on exact copies of things taken directly from other games and used in Rift. It is not new. It is old and most of us have played all this before. Not just something similar, but the EXACT same thing. There is absolutely no original thought here. They are following the money trail of what worked elsewhere and copy/pasta it. I've played all 4 archetypes to 20 and have seen all the content that is available. The reason people say it is a clone of WoW, is because it is in many many aspects. Along with a couple others.

I played two out of the three rift betas and got an invite to the one that takes place on friday. I can easily say that the game is pretty dam fun and in the end thats all that matters to me reallly. I had a really good time with rifts and the quets werent to shabby and the combat felt extremely entertaining. Many times i forgot that the game is actually in BETA and not a finished product. I have given WoW many chances and I just couldn't get into it. I dont understand how i enjoy RIft but i couldnt get into WoW.
This is how i feel. 99.99% of MMOS that have come out since 2006 have been built like crap. Things were promised from developers that just completely were not deliverd. One of the main reasons why people leave these games after the free trial is because when the game is released there are so many problems. The game crashes, fps, glithced quets, invisible walls crappy ass UI. We have seen and heard them all. I and i hope Rift is not expecting to be a WoW killer because only Blizzard can kill their baby, but i do expect RIFT to be a succussul MMO because of its clean launch and dedicated team. I just hope that after lvl 20 there is a lot more exctiment, we dont want another Age of Conan
Generally speaking on mmorpg.com as well as other forums on the net and baring in mind people have had a very limited experiance of what the game has to offer the majority of posts seam to be favourable compared with other games released in recent years . What appears be different about the like of Age of Conan ,Warhammer and Aion is that theres no glaring issues in terms of how it plays and nor does it appear to be a grinder (any more than any other mmo) . I guess you can take from that what you will . The only time I recall mostly possative comments like this was prior to World of Warcrafts release . Its given me enough confidence to pre-order this game which is the first time since thee release of Vanguard . I could still get my fingers burnt I guess but I've a feeling that this game will deliver .
Rift is made by the best in the business and lead by one of the brains behind Everquest it is basically a blend of many MMorpgs taking what they did right and fixing what they did wrong

Hmm.
So the questing in the game is what was done right? The crafting?
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.

There are no absolutes. Conventional mainstream means of questing is still incorporated, is familiar and follows a story-arch, like many other mmo's.
Then there is the unconventional questing, Rifting and ensuing Rift battles that I actually get the feeling that within Rift, by its very nature, will lend to a more organic environment that promotes a server community. Your quest or factional motivation, I get the sense, is to combat the Rift invasions that move across an entire map. I think it will require the server, at various locations,to work together to hold them back. Perhaps,in many cases, an entire zone can be over-run without the server working together, which might make it easier for the opposing faction on our PvP server to take over a hub.
So, mainstream, conventional story-arch questing and non-conventional, continuously on-going, dynamic event questing.
Crafting is never deep enough for me in more mainstream mmo's, and either is the importance of player-aligned crafting, merchandising and economy, versus quest gear. Though I might have enjoyed the importance that Aions crafting system was. But aside from a real sandboxy game like EVE, Darkfall or soon-to-be released Earthrise, I haven't experienced the depth or importance of player-centric crafting in any of the more mainstream theme-parkish mmo's.
I've been in every beta so far, and this is the most polished game I have ever beta'd. This game reminds me of AOC's beta where yoou started in Tortage, and that was the only polished zone. This game is just like that, except the whole thing is polished. There are a few kinks that are to be expected with beta, but they all get fixed rather quickly. I myself reported a water walking exploit, and it was fixed by the next beta phase.
This game to answer all of your questions is like a mix of warhammer, and everquest. The pvp is warhammer'ish which was good fun, while the pve actually forces the use of CC. Most noobs whiped repeatedly in the first dungeon that was playable, "excluding realm of fae because that was a joke". If you're looking for a game that is typical mmo with all the past ones incorporated then this is the game for you. If you are looking for someting fast twitch paced I'd go with DCU.
The options are out there, but generally most are tired of WoW. I'm going to pre-order this game, but I have played the beta's as well so I know what I'm getting into. Give it a month if you feel hesitant ordering this game, and just continue to read the forums here to find out if the game is a bust, like stink hole FFXIV.
people are too quick to pull out the fail card on new mmo's ..give it some time for gods sake...look at vanguard.it was a shell of a game on release and now i bet if they rereleased it eveyone would pick it up and play it ..it is that good of a finished mmo..now if we can just get soe to add some lovein to the franchise but thats another story...sometimes better things come to people over time...it may have a rocky start / lauch and people / fanboiez of other mmo's / games will be quick to pull out the fail card ...im just saying give it some time..its not even out yet lol
So we all run over to "WURM ONLINE". Lol....highly doubt it. I'll bet it doesnt fail within a year.
But most mmorpg gamers 'opinion' of success or failure has really been lowered over the course of the last 5 years, to where just about every other mmo launched, hasn't maintained more than 2-300k sustainted subscribership 6-months to a year out.
So it depends on what your definition of "failure" is.
You my friend are a clear example of how people go broke from gambling. Your bet is lost already and you don't even know it. And the whole Wurm online thing.....omg
Here is a game right up your alley.... www.ogreisland.com
It has reviews that might be more with your line of thinking.

How exactly has he "lost" already? Rift will lose many of its initial buyers around the dreaded 3 month period and usually more around that 6 month period. Unless something magical happens after launch, Rift wont have enough to really hold its initial surge.
WoW is one of the very very very few mmorpgs in history to actually have a growing subscriber base past 6 months. Rift is part of the over saturated market, it has too much competition for 2011 and not enough design features to warrant a huge hit.
It is kind of sad when those who chose to be "fans" of a product end up creating some sort of self belief that it will be a huge success just because they bought it. I know no one wants to feel like the product they purchase will not do as well as they hope, but they need to get used to the market not sticking around for these kinds of products anymore.
I actually thought Rift was going to be the next best thing since sliced bread. I spent a lot of time at their E3 booth and was very impressed by their sales pitch....then I actually got to play the game and what a dissapointment. Generic and subpar titles cannot captivate and hold a market anymore. Rift will be lucky to have Aion's numbers before a years end.
The odds are against them and its mostly due to their design choices.
Raben, I have enjoyed and agreed with everything I have read that you posted about RIFT. It seems to me we are looking for the same thing (along with my 5 rl friends) let me know if you find anything, I am tired of sampling every game. Nothing stands out.
As to RIFT, they try to sell the game as next generation, all new stuff, but nothing (NOTHING) they have in game is unique or groundbreaking. The took some good parts of alot of games, but failed to implement a good crafting system, a horrible pet system, and a terrible pack/storage system.
Hardcore option (keep in mind this is what I pushed from day 1 of forum launch)
When I first read of RIFT I was hoping that the game would be like this. You pick a soul lets use Rogues for a sample. I chose Ranger. I then level up my Ranger thru the coarse of the game, random occurances may happen, for example you kill 100 assassins in PV and you unlock your assassin soul, you kill 1000 Marksman in PVE you unlock that soul, you sell 50 Major Rifts and get the Riftstalker soul, etc. But these souls start at level 1, and you have to level them seperately.
Eventually you could have your rogue be level 50 (in all 8 souls) and be able to activate each tree. With the First tree having 51 pts avail, the 2nd 21, and the 3rd 11 or so (that could be adjusted).
Anyways I am very disappointed it is basically a 1st person treadmill so far, there soul trees are familiar but nothing unique, all rogues and wars have similar skills. I would have been happier if their statement was
Wow is doing very good, so we are gonna try to capitalize on that and change a few things, at least I wouldnt have been hyped so much

I saw this game at PAX along with GW2, TOR, and Tera. And between the four, Rift was one of the least impressive. It was just as bland then as it is now, Maybe it's because my gaming preference has changed over the years to where by I can't stand to even look at a tab-target game.....looking at you Aion =_=

First let me state up front that I have pre-ordered the game, although I haven't played in any of the betas.
It seems to me that many ppl are critizing the game because there is nothing earth shattering. That it only takes good points from several different games and repackages them. IMO this is fully acceptable since I often think, this aspect of one game or another is a good thing. Putting them together into a new MMO should make for some fun. I don't need an earth shattering breakthrough in MMO technology to have fun. If I have 3 or 4 months of fun, It will be worth the 50 bucks and whatever the monthly subscription is. I spend more money on crap. Hell, go to a couple of movies and your at that price and only had about 3 hours of 'fun'.
If you can afford it, give it a shot. It won't be the best thing ever, but I bet it will be fun for a while.

Let me guess. WoW is the best?
dont know where in my post I even said WOW is the best, or even made a reference. My end statement says I wish RIFT just told us they were making a WOW clone with less innovation and a few changes, That way I would know not to waste my time. Just like I knew not to bother with LOTRO
as a matter of fact I rip RIFT for taking wow's crafting system, tree system, skill system, combat system, and failing to take what WOW has done better then any other MMO (The Pet System) They should have started with WOW pet system and built upon it, allow us to armor our pets, equip them with sharpened claws. What kinda of Beastmaster has the same pet as every other BM
I think I am going to be passing on Rift as well. While polished, fun, and engaging to a degree - it just isn't as compelling enough to draw me from my current game. And I think that is what most criticisms will attempt to say, and I think that's Rifts biggest hurdle. The soul system is great. Rifts are great. But are they great enough to keep players around?
If you liked WoW or LotRO but want something new - Rift is your game. As I was telling my friend - its essentially what WAR should've been (granted, we have yet to experience pvp).

This is a fair criticism of the game. What's been driving me crazy is all of the hyperbolic hate toward it from some folks on this forum. I just don't get it. Its at least a competent additiion to the genre, how about hating something that deserves it like FFXIV

Yeah this is all I've been wanting for almost 2 years. Why do all the decent games come out in the same 12 month period lol. Its been dry forever and now we're getting TOR, Rift, GW2, TERA, etc at the same time. Dammit!
Its at least a competent additiion to the genre, how about hating something that deserves it like FFXIV
Amen.
What I've played in the beta was a lot of fun to me (albiet very familiar). So I'm pre-ordering now, and look forward to testing out the Warfronts tomorrow.
it's a measly $50 to try it. And the first month is free...
If you preorder for like $5 at Gamestop you can try the rest of the betas and never go pick it up if you don't like it.
If you like it you will have it from the start, and be able to see how the game changes over time.
If you don't like it after a month, who cares, it's only $50.
You're looking for something to play, right? GW2 and SWTOR are still a long ways off. And WoW blows. And they killed WAR with the 1.4 patch (omg i thought you stood around and waited on timers too much before, it is unbearable now). FFXIV sucked/continues to suck. DCUO is ok if you want to play something designed to work best with a controller. Etc. Etc. Etc...
Seriously, wth else are you gonna play for the next 6 months?
There is so much BS floating around on these forums that if anyone is relying on what's posted here to make a decision they are boned anyway. Drop $5 on a preorder and check it out yourself.
What a find interesting is that after researching a lot about GW2 recently, I notice similarities. GW2 takes it to a completely new level, but Trion gives you a taste of what Anet is talking about.
Funny thing is they are both telling the truth when they say their game has dynamic content. GW2 just takes it further. Now we have to see what makes it into the game, but Anet (like Trion) seem pretty darn confident of what they say.
Now I'm not looking for a flame war, so let me detail more. Anet talks about events in the world that trigger when you get into the area. These event have objectives that show up on a tracker like other games. When you complete an event you get a special karma reward. Rift have rifts/footholds/invasions that work very similar to this. The difference is GW2 takes this concept to a new level by incorporating this into quests.
So to answer your question, 'Is Rift Crap?' The answer is no. It honestly is the next evolution of the MMO. It's just when GW2 comes out it will be the next evolution from Rift.

I self identify as a monkey.
Dammit!
