Hello there !
In a mmo immersion for me is crucial. I MUST be immersed in the world to enjoy the game.
That being said, i'd like to hear about the size of the world and how immersive it is..
as exemple of BIG and IMMERSIVE games i could give you, Ryzom, Darkfall, Vanguard..
not so big but immersive, WoW, LOTRO...
neither big or immersive, AION, Warhammer.
Would you answer that ? i'm in the fence for this game...

Preface: Only seen the training area and one zone so far.
That being said, it has a very WAR size and feel to it.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.
just buy it and play the free month.

The world (so far) seemed big enough for the content. There were plenty of big vistas to see. There were not too many wide open spaces - large plains covered in grass, that sort of thing. One thing I did notice is that the zones are not distinct zone types...i.e. one zone is a mountain, one zone is a swamp, etc. The zone I saw was a mixture of terrains. This gave it the impression that it was larger than it actually was.
I was not immersed in the storyline...but I don't tend to read quests beyond what I need to get them done. *shrug* I was kind of busy just doing stuff and didn't pay that much attention to what was actually happening. At one point I looked up and realized I had stumbled into a 40 man raid on the side of a mountain to try and stop a dragon from taking over the whole area. It was kind of cool. I supposed if I had bothered reading the quests instead of just doing them, I might have a better idea why these guys were trying to summon a green dragon. :-)

ty , this helps alot...
Dont expect the epic feel from Rift. It's visual design is minimal, static meshes and building structure are underwhelming. Each faction "city" or base is nothing more than a few huts and a big building OR (defiant) a large set of stairs and a few hallways. Quest hubs are mostly one tiny building, ill proportioned and low poly. Trees so far are tiny, the landscape usually bland.
In short (pun), you feel like a small character in a small world. Its completely underwhelming in its visual design. Remember you spend over 30% of your leveling in a fairly small intro zone. The map shows a world that should be much larger and better layed out. Honestly I think you should hold off and wait before spending any money on this product.
Hmm, I must have been playing a totally different game, I guess. I loved every texture I saw, every bit of the graphics were stunning to me. Maybe not as good as AOC, but still damn beautiful. I think this is a subjective thing with most people.
I couls sit for 10 minutes watching the rays of light dapple through the tree limbs, if that is crappy graphics I guess I haven't seen good ones that will blow my mind even more.
Same here. I'm not sure what game Rabenwolf is describing, but it's not Rift. Did I see an epic world? No...but I only saw the first 20 levels. The very first couple of quest hubs (through level 10) were small, but the scenery was large...actual mountains and architecture in the distance, not just a skybox, textures matched the buildings I was seeing, etc. Level 15 and up there was a whole town plus a college and the main city (at level 20) was large enough with enough faction vendors, regular vendors and quest givers to take several minutes just to walk around, much less explore. I'm not even sure that's the main faction city.
Have no idea if the world as a whole is huge...because we've only seen a small part of it. My impression, regardless of the size, is that it's very well put together and the content exceeds the physical size of the land itself.
*edit*
This is a lot of what I saw while playing in Beta 3:

Yes I concur you seem to have been playing a different game.
Graphics looked meh to me. But..that's besides the point.
The game routes you through the same area to get more quest space which is efficient. It isn't big nor immersive though.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.
I hate to answer a question with a question, but Vanilla WoW nor Aion weren't big immersive worlds?
i thought the game would be as big as Vanguard =S
what a shame then...
Zones are not that big imo and theres not that many of em. Think only 7-8 on each side. The zones are divided by ether mountains or bodies of water so even if they dont have any loading screens dividing the overland areas it still feels artificially compartmentalized. I would put it above Aion/War in design but below LOTR.
hehe...okay. Won't answer my question, but none-the-less, I hear Vanguard is looking for some subscribers.
i haven't seen your post. sorry
look at the posts time and you'll see why...
I havent played WoW Vanilla... though WoW is not so big but Immersive... as i already said, but Aion, neither immersive or big.
Lets focus on the Thread topic.. please, i dont want to discuss if A is bigger or whatever than B... i wanna know about rift, only.

We only know about the training area and the first zone of the game world. We don't know how big the Rift World is. Only the alpha testers and the developers have any idea how big it is.
There was enough space for the content of levels 1 through 20 on the Guardian side, with some extra unexplored spaces left over. A large hedge maze kind of thing and some wilderness areas. On the Defiant side, I believe the content and the space are pretty tightly matched. I'm not sure if there's any extra space or not. I found the Guardian side better developed overall compared to the Defiant side of things.
I did not find it immersive as in I thought of myself as a Guardian or even as if I was role playing a Guardian...but my brain doesn't work that way at all. I never developed the role playing brain cells or something. Can't really speak for anyone else. I did find myself losing track of time while playing, being engrossed in the game itself and the game mechanics (sometimes I find the game mechanics more interesting than the games).
I do not believe it's large as in having sheer physical space or square mileage to top or compete with other games (from what I've seen so far). They do make very good use of the space that they've shown, which I do like. Empty space in an MMO is wasted space (imo).

i got the invite to BEta 4 !!!
now i'll be able to see for myself how the game feels
ty for your posts...
you can still give your opinion though
The size of world is just right. it is neither too big or small however you won't find it empty like huge worlds vanguard has.
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

Im picking on WoW btw because its the beast that made all of this possible
have they told anything about Flying mounts ?
if it's not big as Vanguard, i hope at least it has a great feel as WoW and LOTRO, where you know the map is not that big, but still you feel the "hugeness" of the world...
I hated the claustrophobic feel in Aion and Warhammer....
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
You have never pressed M during the beta have you? I suppose to the person who didnt actually think about it, they would assume its large... but you can actually tell how big the world is based on the size of freemarch and silverwood, the land mass they take up on the map. During the beta phase, I had already scaled the mountains around silverwood and unlocked the map information for the surrounding zones as well. Not only are they either smaller or equal to the starter zone but apparently have less going on within them via map markers.
This makes sense? Why? because pulling the enemies from those zones shows that they go up in 5 level incriments. This means that the starter zones are over 30% of the entire games leveling content. If the max level is 50 and by the time you get out of your noob areas (freemarch and silverwood) you will have to be level 20. Every zone after will have a linear pattern where it will be lvl 21-25, and the next 25-30....ect this is why they are intentiallly small.
Furthermore, if you DID look at the map, you would notice the entrance points which are represented by circles. This shows two things. The first being that zone progression is very restricted. It reveals a linear progression point. The second thing is where each faction starts from. They cannot cross the bridge between freemarch and silverwood, which means that the top half of the map is the linear progression placement for the Guardians while the lower half of the map is for the Defiant and their leveling path. What this does is essentially cut the content in half as its divided between both factions and their leveling path.
I do not see how guardian faction players will be able to play normally if they some how manage to make their way to the southern half of the map, which would require trion put a magical portal or that they would need to go through all the guardian content first (which would in turn force them to be max level anyways). The contested regions are mostly where the two factions actually have bordering zones.
The brillant part of WoW's world design is that both factions occupy the same space as they level. Its clear that this is missing from Trion's world design.
As for them making good on the physical space.. I dont think so. Freemarch was mostly open land with a road going from point A to point B. The trees in the game look more like shrubs and quest hubs are just small static meshes that represent a tent or a house. They do not make good of physical space because at every two steps the player will run into some red flagged mob who has a grudge against the player. IF you just haphazardly cover every inch of a small space with hostile mobs, it shows then that they wanted to slow down the pace because THEY KNOW its small.
Small space is good for games that will have low populations, it forces choke points and easy funneling of players. Large worlds need larger sub numbers. Its a double edged sword in a way. Good space management and design can have the best of both worlds. Something Rift certainly does not do. Its cheap really.
Perhaps you didnt know that Rifts spawn at the same locations every time and that their invasion spawns go down the same way point set tracks, every time. Rift chose to go small for whatever reason.
i'll play it today and see how it is like... but as it seems the world is not big as i wish it would be.
Yeah see it for yourself during beta. People here who dislike a certain MMO have tendency to overblow things to make their argument.

The real answer is only the Alpha people know...It won't be huge by their admission though.
They were tasked with making 'real' content in each zone, and not just having cut/paste filler zones. Supposedly all the zones were to have dungeons and such, and having played beta 1-3, we have only been shown a small area. They want you to have just enough lower content to level and not make it a grind, then have things in place for meaningful endgame....
So only a alpha person would know, and they are still under NDA, I guess. This beta opens 1 more zone and the limit to 25, so we will see a little more.
I have a feeling things will open up a little more, atleast I hope so.
I cannot see paying 50$ for this and having to pay a monthly fee. With Vindictus being such a fun game and its working from a free-MMO standpoint. The Rift gang should consider selling the game at a cheaper price and offer a transaction store to really propser. Otherwise you'll be seeing threads about how no one plays and sever shutdowns blah blah blah.
Momo sucks, I have proof.
Would you mind telling me Why ?
