I often play female characters. When there is no stat difference, I pick the smallest character I can manage. This tends to be females.
I also prefer pvp MMOs, and a smaller character can be slightly easier to hide/slightly more difficult to target, depending on the game. That's my reasoning behind it. If the male character is the same size, I play a male.
I play female characters very often..They're prettier to look at, and like others have said it's different experience. I usually play a male as my main character and females as my alts. But there are some cases when I prefer to play a female as my main, when the game doesn't have a race that appeals to me (I usually want my main male character to be something dark and rotten, kinda like the Undead in WoW :P).
Whenever I have a choice of gender at character creation for any game I play, I always choose to be a guy, since I'm a dude and it's a hero fantasy. The one exception is the original Guild Wars. The guys looked a little too pretty and unmasculine, which I didn't like, so I went for extremely pretty and unmasculine. I might do the same with my human, norn and sylvari characters in GW2, but I'm waiting to see how the males turn out. The female charr look pretty cool as well, but I'll definitely play as a male because they're so badass.
Some people say that it's very bizzare to play as another sex in an online game, do you think it's simply fun and for the look, do people take this too seriously, or is it linked to an identity problem?

look, some guys like the look of female models, it isnt complicated. It has no deeper meaning for that guy, it's just a nice picture to look at while playing (in fact I would say the guys that are freaked out by it are the ones with the hang ups).
It's no different then a guy playing Tomb Raider or Perfect Dark, or whatever.

i dont play female toons unless i have to (witch elf from war). i keep seeing people say they dont want to stare at a guys ass all day. maybe its just me but i dont stare at my toon at all. im looking at the world environment. but i guess im the minority.
Yep, I love playing female toons, no I'm not gay, and if someone asks me ingame then I will tell them I'm a guy, I don't flirt with my female toons or try to use their female charms to any advantage. I also don't care what anybody else thinks about the fact I like creating female toons. I just prefer the female look and they often have much nicer clothes in the games, especially the shoes
I ama guy and I like to play female alts to dance naughty and flirt with other guys. It's all in good fun and I suppose they know I am probably a guy in RL but they flirt back. I never tell them anything to let them know I am a guy because that shouldn't matter. It's all just make believe and fun for everyone involved anyhow.
For those of you out there that say that a male playing a female toon is weird.. well it kinda is in a way.. and the arguement that 'i would rather stare at female ass all day' just ads to the odness if you look at it from an outside point of view... like watching anime porn.. wtf is so hot about pixels in the shape of a drawn female boob? ugh i remember when conan came out and all the sad 13 yr old logging in and running aorund tortage naked screaming BOOBIES... disturbing..
Anyway personaly.. im messed up but it realy comes down to race/class for me.. I.e
Caster clases i just play as a female.. something about a male in a glorified dress kinda wigs me out..
warrior classes normaly = male! why? cuz normaly you can make warriors bad ass.. spiky armor bigs swords.. oh big weapons.. sry ladies if this is offenceive but i know most women cant lug around some the of weapons these games portay.. expecialy with the way their bodys are like.. all slender and such. I mean realy.. last time my wife or one of her friands tried to even hold my claymore well.. I laughed... and then picked it and them up.. put it back.. and laughed some more. Nothing against women but skinny sexy women probably cant weild a (insert curse word here) 2h weapon verry well.
now rouge classes are tough.. ranger classes =male and assassin type classes = female.. why? well the thought of a femaly manovering around silently in skin tight leather and carying dagers is kinda sexy to me lol.. and the ranger.. well.. running around in the woods = dirty.. well formed muscles.. and normaly not so shaved.. get the hint?
priest clases are mixed..
also the race maters alot 2..
Beast type = male like in gw2 char,asura, norn would fall into this catagory.. hopefly the charr is self explanatory sylvari are weird and somewhat remind me of elves and for gods sake male elves to me alwayes seemed like 1 step away from a belly shirt, belly button piercing and a lisp.. nothing against those type of people.. actualy have a few friends like that odly enough just aint me! lol.. If i were to make a female norn i would be way too tempted to name her 'bertha' or 'helga'.. figure it out.. and human would direct twords the class (read above). and the asura im not realy picky on but i just cant seem to see myself playing a little football head female with huge eyes/ears who due to world lore would come off as a stuck up (insert cure word here).
