Fact that it only has 500+ threads on MMORPG.com, which explains the hype, interest and how successful launch the game will have.
Fact that many of the current "bored" players decided to try and abandon it in late 2011 due to SWTOR, GW2 etc.
Fact that DCUO sales and subs have direct impact on the future of the game, its content updates and development.
Fact that too many players are spread out atm with other indie/nitch MMORPG's and that is like 45% of the MMORPG market, rest 55% are all still in WOW.
The only player base I see DCUO attracting right now is players left without any single/MMORPG game atm. Also this is a very short period before the big "SWTOR/RIFT/GW2" arrive. Many of the superhero fans are also already supporting other MMORPG's where they invested their time in like CoH/CoX, CO, which are also another competitor, especially how CO going F2P within a month or so.
If SOE decided to make itself more competitive with some F2P model or cheaper sub plan as well as cheaper box sales past launch it might've lured more players later on. SOE should be realistic that DCUO will be mainly considered a backup MMORPG due to its heavy competition this year. SOE will need to do more than just getting attractive IP and some actors to deliver a quality MMORPG if it wants to attract the mature/experienced vet gamers.
It's crystal clear what kind of audience mainly the game will have atm and it doesn't surprise me that two of my friends clearly showed no interest in it when asked them to try it despite the cheap promotion that ends tomorrow.
DCUO only advantages are the fact that everything else is bad if not worse that's released, so players like me from total boredom would end up spending extra $ to kill few months. It will grab extra subs from the PS3 world, but not a lot. It took me 3 weeks to consume Cataclysm, but i'm aware many will take a month or two at least before uninstalling it and considering something else. So yea sad days for DCUO.
The beta was in a really bad time when Cata was launched so I was too busy enjoying it that I completely forgot on my DCUO beta key in my mail...
I hope SOE will learn from this experience and come back even stronger in 2012+

I think you're a bit of a negative Nancy here Kopo. I believe this game is going to have a pretty good launch. How many subs it keeps after 30 days will be interesting, but from everything I've read I think it has enough to keep people interested for several months. How successful DCUO is after that is up to how much content they add over the next 2-3 months. If they add a lot, then the future is bright.
Also the IP will be a great help to the sub numbers.

I hope it has a good launch. The fact they got reduced price for preorder is one great thing SOE was able to do to help its launch. Also SOE did right by investing into graphics over content so they can upgrade the game and add more mechanics, features like player housing, storyline missions, better PvP concept. Instanced arena PvP and useless open world PvP is clearly not gonna cut it. Also SOE is split btw PvE raiding and instanced PvP. It needs to focus on what probably the majority of players want and thats more conflict between villians and heros in the open world.
This is a superhero MMORPG at the end, and if SOE fails to make players feel heroic in the open world, RIP DCUO.
The game was designed to be F2P...
However, they are starting with P2P... to see how much money they can get out of it.
Pretty much. I think you nailed it. In fact, the only reason i've done any research on the title at all, is because I felt pity for how low it's hype has been despite the impending release.
The number of threads attached to an mmo determines its launch success......lol
SOE's been running add's for DCU on tv, I even seen one during an nfl playoff game....
Way to pull numbers and percentages outta your ass....You have no idea how to tell how many people are gonna be appealed by the IP/Combat system etc, Toss in the fact its a multi platform game makes the forecast even foggier.
You guys need to give up on hopes of F2P hoestly....The game is fully voice acted by hollywood talent, The IP itself cost alot of money to acquire, Multiplatform means multiple studios worked on the game....At the end of the day this game is easily one of the most expensive titles SOE has ever produced.
The combat system looks great. I only got interested in the game a couple of days ago and from the videos I've seen, it's different than any other mmorpg. It's hack and slash and more action based. As long as the content is there, it has a lot of potential. I'm willing to give it a shot.
Everyone is precongnitive these days.
Why worry about how the game is going to do? If it's a great success...hooray.
It's a massive failure, oh well....there will be other games.
Worrying, fussing, and arguing about it just doesn't make sense.
Soe had nothing to do with the price drop at D2D.

Explain this too then.

In November I made a poll and this is clearly the WORST outcome DCUO could hope to achieve. And some of those 6-7 just voted cuz they felt so sorry for the amount of votes the game received.
I guess that clinches it. You did make a poll after all.
You're placing a little too much stock in that.
There are plenty examples of games that have been quite successful without having to have a majority popularity.
Look at City of Heroes. They're going on 6 or 7 years and they're still turning a profit.
They aren't free to play either.
I think DCUO is going to be plenty successful. They may end up a niche game, but that really doesn't matter.
I don't think DCUO will last long . Hardcore player reach max lvl in 2-3 days ..casual player will take a week at most.
The rest of the time is farm gear.. 3 week of that will kill the game lol
Pvp is fun , but after a while it will get to you(like all games) ..
i did some raid ... in Pve is all about how fast you can nuke down a boss
That sounds very similar to a game that a lot of people think will never die.
Is can game iz gud,...harcare play lvl n 2-3day.
Gear 3 week...don iz gud.
I did sum raid 2...in Pve it all about you iz beening fast ur gud for nuke boss.
yea lol
funny bout that. lol
I like polls but I don't think most on here who want to play DCUO or are going to play even knew this poll existed till you put the link here.
"You think this "A" stands for France?" Captain America
WHY are ppl even talkin about going f2p, i mean CO wil go f2p because well...cryptic aint good in making games themselfs...lotro whent f2p for well, dunno why it whent f2p rlly, anyways because 3 or 4 games whent f2p dosnt mean EVERY game that comes out this year will go f2p some games just stop there service like MXO or those couple ones from NCsoft, my point is if you expect a game to go f2p because its a ''hype'' now then the game will fail for sure because ppl are waiting for it....and if it is f2p then ppl will complain it dosnt have much content so they leave...well ye no shit because nobody was playing when it was p2p...just get used to pay for your games and content....if you dont like to pay for it well...to bad for you but dont expect us paying players to feel sorry for you. there are plenty of games for us all to enjoy
if you dont like paying a monthly fee for an mmorpg...play a f2p game
if you dont like the content in an f2p or the graphics or whatever.....go p2p
if you dont like both (f2p and p2p)...go play some other game that isnt mmorpg and dont complain about ''awh do i need to pay a monthly fee for this...then screw it''
they only do p2p for the mean reason to keep the game company's up and running...if there werent any mmorpg AT ALL we wouldnt even have games today because everybody was downloading them...an mmorpg is sort of the only chance for a company to get money for sure, so again....if you dont like paying for something (supporting the game company's to keep the bussiness up) then go play something else...look at bioware even they are making an mmorpg just to make more profit because all of there games were as far as i know singleplayer so why wouldnt we download it (more % of the players were downloading games)
The hubris surrounding this game reminds me too much of the hysteria before the launches of Hellgate London, Star Trek Online, and All Points Bulletin.
I personally played the beta of DCUO and feel that while it is a fun and pretty game, it is too content light to keep me entertained long enough to justify me spending any money on it. And I feel that just like Cryptics assembly line MMO creatiing system, this lack of substance is intentional. Sony knows that they can do a half baked job and still laugh all the way to the bank with this big name IP.
However then as now the gamers suffereing from MMO starvation do not want to hear any rational argument about what they hope will be their next savior from having to actually interact with real live people.
Oh well its your time and money people. If you want to waste it on yet another empty hole in the sand in which to burry your head, its really not my business. However after the pathetic and continuous stream of crap games produced in the past two years I would think that some of you would wise up and get tired of being given far less than the value of both your patronage and your currency.

As he flies on
The wings of a dream
Now he knows his Father betrayed
Now his wings turn to ashes
To ashes his grave
Fly on your way like an eagle
Fly as high as the sun
On your wings like an eagle
Fly, touch the sun

I paid 60 bucks for Pac-man on Atari 2600, it was horrid. 50 bucks for this won't hurt. Say I work an hour of OT, buy the game and get 40-50 hours of "fun" from it, not too shabby. It's irksome to know publishers cut every corner they can to charge you fifty bucks but in the end it's not like I'm shooting money out of a cannon.
P.S. I'm not really disagreeing with your message just the severity. And I agree with you, we have been trained to embrace suck. Consumers as a whole are horrid enablers.
The hubris surrounding this game reminds me too much of the hysteria before the World of Warcraft, City of Heroes, and Final Fantasy XI.
See, I can do it too.
Just because people threw a fit about a game and it did poorly doesn't set precedence for any other game.
You know people threw a huge fit about World of Warcraft when it was coming out too.
There's plenty of games that do just fine and end up doing so for quite a while.
But lets just continue to postulate one way or another for no particular reason, other than we want to.
Actually you can't. All three games you mentioned had a long delvelopment and beta process and launched with enough content to keep players playing for more than a single month.
All three games I mentioned had a ton of DEVOTED FANS expressing concern that the games needed work only to be ignored, TO THE GAME CREATORS cost.
How about next time you post you actualy list some of your own ideas as to why I'm wrong and this is a brilliant game rather than making more puff posts about why everybody else's opinions suck?
"Gypsies, tramps, and thieves, we were called by the Admin of the site . . . "
I think too many people look at MMOs like relationships instead of games. "Will it keep me happy the rest of my life?" types of questions, along with all the drama involved. Expectations are always way too high. Then far too many start to become disillusioned when their favorite thing isn't the game.
It's a game. Play it while you are having fun. If the game dies out, and you no longer have fun, then move on. It really is that simple.
Actually, I can.
All the games I listed took time to develop the kind of content that kept them running for so long. World of Warcraft didn't have an endgame when it came out. It didn't even have all the instances and quests or zones it boasts now. Final Fantasy didn't have the the dozens of jobs it has now, nor did it have all the zones and story lines it has now. City of Heroes didn't have all the powersets, zones, or task forces that it has now at launch either. None of them had even a third of what they have now, yet they all did fine.
Some them even went through massive changes that rivaled the Star War NGE. Hell, even the gripe fest over that and the that game is still there.
I did beta for two out of three of the games that I mentioned and I can tell you that we were telling them that the games were not ready as well. Every beta you get a number of very vocal people that always calling for a game to be pushed back for x, y, z reason. Eventually the game gets released despite the glaring errors anyhow.
The problem with your argument is that you take a pretty reasonable opinion and start it out with a ridiculous statement that isn't possible to evaluate. You say that they exhibiting hubris in their launch, but many games that were very successful took the same approach, release before we deemed them ready. If you want to assume that doing so is arrogance, I guess.
Tons of Devoted fans for Hellgate: London? Ton of devoted fans for All Points Bulletin?
You're making assumptions again. I beta tested STO and I'll give you that, they definitely had a lot of devoted fans urging changes, but that's a game based on a long standing IP, unlike the other two. WoW already had a solid following from the prior Warcraft series and so did Final Fantasy, as another long standing IP. Those two did just fine, even with people stating a ton of displeasure prior to release.
Despite the flaws the games I mentioned had, people supported the game, and content came over time. Is DCUO light on content? Yeah, I think so. But, the game is good enough to support its evolution and that turns out to be the case of most successful games.
The game has great storylines, a new fast paced combat style, the support of a strong IP, an interesting gear and costume system, and it has easily seen potential. The fact that you can see the potential and see the many options they have in expanding in the DC Universe makes quite the difference than a game IP that doesn't have a huge background to work with.
And as for your last comment....don't get full of yourself calling yourself "Everybody".
