Well there's perpetuum, but I mean if I wanted to play Eve i'd play Eve.
There's Archage which looks awesome, but they have a very small penalty for dyeing so there's no risk vs. reward but idk not much info is released. The videos look freaking epic however, the graphics are awesome. My only complaint is I am slightly tired of fantasy.
There's Xsyon, which looks like it's going to crash before it takes off, one guy is developing it, and tbh it's absurdely ambitious, far far to ambitious for 1 person.
Everyone is talking about GW2 and SWTOR, but what about ER? Could it be the sandbox mmo everyone is looking for? It seems to be far more then just a world death match like DF or MO, with much much more depth and the devs seem to get that the sandbox genre does not = just pure pvp, even though it is open pvp it seems to be a more deep game like EVE and it releases on Feb. 4.
The thing is that the Beta video doesn't look very good...well actually to be honest it looks horrible. They have a new beta build in they said so maybe that will help, hopefully it doesn't release half completed like MO.
IMO the game will either be epic win or epic fail, but not in between.
What do you guys think since everyone here is clamoring for a good sandbox? Any other sandboxes coming out?
Comments
Earthrise is the only sandbox close to release that looks any good.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
I currently play and love Darkfall. It is a Sandbox that has slowly but surely been getting sand. It has a free trial that you can play. It is supposed to be getting a few interesting patches within a couple of weeks and a major expansion (Darkfall 2010) that has been delayed should be coming out soon (hopefully).
It's a game to play for years, not months. PVP with consequences. You only have one character so you can and will make a name for yourself...for the good or bad.
It's not perfect but AV is dedicated to it and it is improving.
Every few months I take a good hard look at the games out there and rarely does anything ever grab my attention. Part of that has to do with how long I have played games. So much of it have already done before before before before.
I love Darkfall, I like Fallen Earth, the only game I see upcoming that is even remotely intresting to me is World of Darkness which is so far away it could easyly never happend.
Unless a game is revolutionary in ways I dont expected i doubt I will leave darkfall or my backup fallen earth for any other game that is fantasty based, doesnt contain group crafting and dosent contain some form of empire building.
The game that would blow me away is basically a current time themed MMO RPG RTS in FPS mode.
I had hoped that Darkfall would have brought FPS RPG and RTS together in one game and I still think its been a good try but the RTS part needs some hel and the community to be frank keep missing the point in that area. Hard to build a zerg in a game designed for zergs when nobody wants a zerg.

i see a bigger risk with Earthrise than with Xsyon. the Xsyon guys seem to be pretty serious indie-developers, they dont hide the poor status of the game and tell you pretty open, that they need the money now. Earthrise does not.
i am very interested in Earthrise, but i will wait until i see some very detailed reviews this time.
played: Everquest I (6 years), EVE (3 years)
months: EQII, Vanguard, Siedler Online, SWTOR, Guild Wars 2
weeks: WoW, Shaiya, Darkfall, Florensia, Entropia, Aion, Lotro, Fallen Earth, Uncharted Waters
days: DDO, RoM, FFXIV, STO, Atlantica, PotBS, Maestia, WAR, AoC, Gods&Heroes, Cultures, RIFT, Forsaken World, Allodds
This is a small peeve, but a peeve none the less. In Xyson, everyone looks like they're walking about with their eyes as wide open as they can make them, or their irises are too small for their eyeballs.
Also, I think I'm more partial to the hi-tech environment than the primitive post apocalyptic environment. A post apocalyptic environment with old buildings, guns, etc. like Fall Out is fine, but if you get too far in the future, it loses something for me.
Definitely tired of high fantasy though.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
I'm not sure about Earthrise. They either lack budget or interest in promoting their game very close to launch, which does not bode well for the game.
uncharted water online = best sandbox game from asia
now available to western player after 5 year of success ^^
completely off topic for a moment, you signature of games you have played is very intresting. The pattern itself is revealing to the industy as a whole. A great deal many more options but none of them worth staying for more than a few months (although I clearly disagree when it comes to Darkfall but in general I agree with the patteren.

ArcheAge is out best shot. Its got a large budget and is made by industry vets. Won't be out for a while though.
I also want Earthrise to be good and I hope it is. But im not holding my breath.
Remember Old School Ultima Online
Darkfall.
The definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
I'm afrad an open word death match doesn't equal a sandbox.
Dawn Tide lol
Surprisingly to me, TERA is billing itself as a sandbox. Either there's a heck of lot more there than I'm seeing or the devs don't really know what a sandbox game is. I guess we'll see. In any case, it sure is pretty.
"Soloists and those who prefer small groups should never have to feel like they''re the ones getting the proverbial table scraps, as it were." - Scott Hartsman, Senior Producer, Everquest II
"People love groups. Its a fallacy that people want to play solo all the time." - Scott Hartsman, Executive Producer, Rift
How is Dawn Tide?
I'd disagree with the question's premise: I do not believe that everyone is clamouring for a [good] sandbox. I think that there is a sizeable number of players who maybe are clamouring for more old-skool 'open world' feel - and less 'on rails' gaming mechanics. But I would be wary of extrapolating this into a soaring demand for sandbox.
I'd also disagree with comparing either DF or MO with Eve Online because the comparison isn't apples with apples, but with apples and oranges. Eve released 2003, and I had 4 spells (subs) with Eve since the summer of 2003, and Eve back then ain't Eve 2010/11.
There is also The Secret World in development and due to be released by Funcom; however I believe it's more a hybrid rather than a pure sandbox, because it purported to be story-driven, although it is skill-based (no classes or levels), faction driven (3 factions and you cannot change), so isn't 'here's a box with some sand, and a bucket and spade to make sand-castles type game'.
I'll take a look at Earthrise, as well as keep an eye on Archage. I'm happily playing Ryzom for the time-being (which is pure sandbox), but my medium-term focus will be the TSW, because I'm intrigued by the setting (urban horror), sandbox elements, factional play and PvP, as well as the story-telling aspects and how all of these are woven into the game.
It might be an idea to re-edit your original post to include a list of games which are sandbox, as well as their current status i.e. development, alpha, beta, released, etc.
"If you think I'm plucky and scrappy and all I need is love, you're in way over your head. I don't have a heart of gold or get nice. There are a lot nicer people coming up. We call them losers."
Earthrise has open PvP right ? I am a terrible coward I need flagging and choice .Will there be like servers that cater to that in Earthrise ?
Want a sandbox with risk, Darkfall. Simple.
Darkfall is a steaming pile of.. you know what.
Honestly, you'd have to force yourself to stay logged in for more than a few hours for that game, you can tell it's made by some unknown Devs who's first and last step into the MMO world this was. No offense, but even Fallen Earth with some problems it has is a lot better.
I'm still waiting for Linkrealms and Dawntide. No idea in what shape they currently are. Xsyon lacked so much features, polish and funds, when they were going to release it almost a year ago, so that I can't even bother to check it out again. Earthrise didn't look so appealing with the WoW-like action bars and non-FPS combat, as it appeared in the videos.
As I see it are there 2 interesting sandbox games in the making right now.
1. World of darkness online by CCP and White wolf. Gothic horror game, what little is known about it sounds great, for one thing experienced players can make "quests" for newer ones. What little we seen of the graphics also seems very cool.
2. Whatever Bethesda is working on. Most likely a Elder scrolls MMO.
As for the rest there are a few indie games in the working but these 2 devs (or 3 counting WW) have actually proven themselves before and have a good budget. And I am really looking forward to see what will happen when actual P&P devs make a MMO together with a competent developer.
Problem with DF is that PVP is all there is in the game , that and grinding for skills, mats, mobs, there is nothing else in the sandbox for us to play with if you really want to call DF a sandbox, more like a arena deathmatch MMO.
Dawntide isnt in very good shape. Its in open beta so go see for yourself if you want.
Darkfall is the best MMO created in at least 4 years, most likely longer.
Period.
That said, more different options in the market place would be desirable please, not more RIFT
The only thing I see of intrest coming is WoD online which is many years off.

I have been playing Darkfall since around June of 2010...a little over six months as of this writing. I have to say that everyone keeps saying that Darkfall is a "sandbox" game. Well, maybe it is if you were playing at launch. For a game that bills itself as a sandbox game, it really has never felt that way to me. To me, it is essentially a different type of FPS game like Call of Duty or Battlefield on a larger scale and in a fantasy setting. I define (and maybe you don't) a sandbox as an open world where you have lots of options to change that world in many ways. Well, as a newer player, my only options are to grind skills/traits and PvP with very little PvE available to me. I can not create a city. I can not have a merchant if I decide to craft and sell my wares. I can not even own a house. I CAN grind skills/traits and PvP. That is about it.
Let's party like it is 1863!
haven & hearth is prob the only true sandbox game out right now.
