Nothing is filling the MMORPG void

theratmonkeytheratmonkey Member Posts: 684

It seems that  Cataclysm has not lasted me at all, and I'm already tired of it. (I played a Goblin to level 50, got bored, didn't bother with the high level content.)

That's not to say I hate wow now, still think it's a good game, but after 6 years on and off of WoW, I think I might be done with it.

In that case, since the new year, I haven't found anything to fill the void, so to speak. My friend wants me to play DCUO, but I don't want to buy an MMORPG this early after release (Learned my lession with AoC and Warhammer.)

Anybody have any suggestions? I've browsed the game list, but they can only tell you so much. I figure the game that this community slanders the least might be the best bet.

EDIT: Well, something to play until SWTOR comes out at least.

Groovy.

I am of similar mind (quit WoW 5 months ago) but it really depends on your situation. For me, I've picked up lots of cheap games from the Steam sale so I'm slowly going through that.

Divinity 2: Dragon Knight Saga is one of the best RPG I have ever played. Holy molly is it good! O_O

DA2 is coming out on March and it'll have the 'Save game import' from DA1 so you might want to create your 'perfect save' on DA1.

Two Worlds 2 is releasing soon. Yes, Two Worlds 1 was god-awful-that-it-became-good but the sequel looks good.

I hear you. I am in a similar situation as you. I like playing Darkfall but in a game like that you have to start playing the same time as everyone else or you will never catch up mainly because you can cap every single skill in the game and be a demi-god compared to new players when it comes to pvp just on shear skills and stats alone. Some of these mmorpgs give me the same feeling I get when I chew on a piece of gum for to long but I just can't spit it out.

Two Worlds 2 doesn't release until the 25th and who knows that might be subject to change again.

I also have the problem of the OP. All the MMORPGs are launching in march and stuff probably to avoid releasing at the same time as cataclysm.

I have enough RPG to keep me occupied until DA2 if worst comes to worst. :)

Two Worlds 1 was a flawed pile of poo but, it did the whole 'world is alive' thing better than Fallout3 or Obvilion IMO.

Although I really can't get into 'The Witcher'. This is my 3rd attempt and for some odd reason, I just can't get into it.

Games of similar genre try to avoid releasing at the same time. e.g Blur, Split Second didn't do too well. Heck for Call of Duty, every publisher (regardless of genre) steers clear of that release date!

Regardless the flaws Two Worlds 1 had I still enjoyed the game very much, actually the only annoying thing for me was the voice acting.

Since a few weeks playing Two Worlds 2 (pc-version) and having a blast (yes it's released allot sooner it seems in the EU) The voice acting isn't the messed up shakesparian we heard in 1 but is just plain English/American, the story is great, the action/conseqence works very well, love the combat, but keep switching and can't make up my mind if I want to go combat warrior like or mage like. I love the way upgrades and spell making works, love to explore and often getting lost. There are some creepy dark mazes to get lost in. Also the look of the game is just awesome and in a way feel that TW2 is what TW1 should have been.

Which brings me back to OP that yes often with singleplayer games the part 2 might become the better game (obviously not always but often), with MMORPG they got one shot mostly to do it right.

Just to name a few minor things about 2W2 for me would be the same sentence each time you enter a cave/dungeon and that the first update messed up me exe file where I couldn't play/start the game but found out after trying several things like re-install full game, uninstall. Physx and re-installing it again, changing video drivers that I just needed to use the DX10 game.exe to run it. (lol)

Yeah, at the moment I'm playing DAO, trying to get my perfect save ready.

Gonna buy the rest of the DLC I don't have for it soon, so I can not only have a perfect game, but a complete one.

Also, to the Rift comment: No. There is really only one thing that looks remotely interesting to me in that game, which is the class system. Everything else looks...bland.

You could try D&D Online It's a good game with a pretty solid community.

To be honest, none of the DA DLC is really worth the price, except the one for the Golem which is free anyway.

Even the expansion, Awakening isn't too flashy. I'll say the chars are a bit more deep but that's about it. Bioware really dropped the ball on DA:O DLC imo.

ME2 DLC on the other hand is just rock solid awesome!

If you are into D&D, Neverwinter nights 1/2 is fairly cheap (10/20 bucks) and there are heaps of content that the community made.

Might want to just try something different for casual playing. Thats what i did while waiting for a new mmorpg and im still kind of waiting on that. Waiting on DCUO due to Targets failness :( anyways i loved the beta of that game, the combat is my favorite thing about it other than the really cool fact that its a DC universe.

Have you tried Vindictus? I see that as a must try for any gamer.

I like A.V.A. as a free FPS, Genesis A.D. is also another pretty cool free fps, ive enjoyed most of ijji's games. I love another fps called S4 for its anime style.

Gods and Heroes has been puttin out beta keys.

Perfect World is pretty cool and its a bit old.

Two games that im personally anticipating the most are Tera and FireFall.

Single player games: Batman Arkham Asylum is incredible, seriously. Dark Sector is pretty sweet too.

    Im being distracted now, laters.

I know this isnt what you want to hear but...

    Dont play so damn much.

Stop burning through 2 years of content in 6 months and you wont be burned out on MMORPGS.

For me at least, when i had the time to play hardcore, i tend to get burned out and move to a new one, and repeat.  Soon there wasnt really any decent game left to play.  Now with the ability to play mabey and hour or two on weekdays, and one weekend in which to play 10 hours, i find myself enjoying the games i do play much more.  The little things that bother you dont become obvious, and you can enjoy the game for what it is, entertainment, not a full time job.

I have the same issue with Witcher and can;t quite put my finger on why I just can;t seem to get into I have had at least 10 attempts and I always get to the first stage in the labs and then log out of game never to return.

Anyway to the OP in short theres nothing I might just might take a look at Earthrise on the 4th Feb,  It's initial goals way back in 05 when I first heard of it won me over and whilst very little is known of it and a couple of uninspiring video's I have a soft spot for indie developers,  especially ones that design a game that on paper sounds like my perfect game.

Likely it will be £40 down the tubes but thats no worse than going out and getting hammered except with ER I won;t get a hangover.

IF you played WOW for 6 years ... Have luck finding something to replace it. But you will need more than luck.

Like lower the expectations, ignore a lot of shortcomings, ignore content, choices and yes simple good old fun.

Then become a hardcore fan of the new thing and try to post about it on mmorpg.com that despite all the above it is the best thing on earth.

Chances you will find "it" for longer than 3 months will be slim though.

There is far more chance you'll end up posting on mmorpg.com as a prime activity and empty the stomac every few hours on WOW and the failing industry to deliver.

Chances are mmorpg.com will be you main stay for the next 6 years, instead of joining an mmorpg for years...

And - of course - it is the fault of Blizzard.

I bought DCUO with the full intent of treating it as a single player game with online interaction (taking the free month and that's since I'm on break from college).  Been a week, played it for around 100+ hours and had a blast, and I can definitely say I've gotten my "MMO fix" from that.  I'm not even subbed right now but it definitely gave me enough fun/excitement to warrant the 50 bucks.  If you look at it from a different perspective it can be a lot more enjoyable.

Should also note I played WoW for 5 years and have tried at least 50% of the MMO's that have come out (LOTRO, Vanguard, DDO, EQ2, AOC, WAR, COX, etc.)

I just crave the "excitement" from an MMO and this left me completely satisfied.  Like I think I'm good on MMO's till GW2 or STO now (or maybe The Secret World or the Warhammer 40k MMO).

I know the feeling, i havn't sat in one place so to speak for a long time, i'm in and out of games after a few months at most it seems, trying to find that game that can keep me. I just ordered Amnesia: The Dark Descent, so i'll play that, but as for MMORPG's I don't really know what to look forward to, perhaps RIFT. :/

But if you want something fun to play for a few months there's plenty out there, problem is your looking for another game to hold you like WoW.

    As has been said, minecraft.

I have also been playing The Witcher. Though Rift is looking increasingly interesting I must say. More of the same but at least a little different, hopefully enough to pique my interest.

  • PlasmicredxPlasmicredx Member Posts: 629

I think I finally found a new game to play. DC Universe. Before today I was skeptical that I could ever like a super hero MMORPG after City of Heroes and Champions Online. In those games I got bored before I even got level 5. In DC Universe? Well, I just played for over 10+ hours today alone. Just got it too.

I even recorded some of the footage and I can't get enough of it. I'm not very good at making pvp vids though so it'll be pretty raw.

Yes the DLC for DA is a waste of money, Awakening was kind of needed though since it completed the story of the original game, but the rest just felt like add-ons and not much more.

I totally agree about NWN1&2 though, they are huge games, and DA was basically a newer. shortened, and simplified version of that series, actually even the main plot to DA is eerily similar to NWN2's lol. I loved the first nwn but passed on the 2nd, found nwn2 in a bargain bin for $4.99 last year, and it was more than worth that price. The ammount of content makes DA look like a joke in comparison, and that's not even including the 2 or 3 expansion packs available for it.

Just be prepared to do a lot of manual searching and patching, because NWN2 straight out of the box is kind of broken and doesn't look or run as well as it should, but some offical patches will improve visuals and fix performance issues.

Earthrise is coming out, no idea how it is though, looks interesting, but the no trial or much of a beta, and still under NDA gives you pause.

All the people that are tired of WoW, but keep getting drawn back, you might as well quit it.  I did the same with EQ for a bit, and you just remind yourself why you keep quiting after 'x' amount of time coming back to a game...If it was worth your time to still play, you wouldn't of quit it, as someone that has gone through it....

As for WoW, I played the WoW beta, never looked back....It reminded me of a couple games, and like it wanted to be a DAoC, but without much going for it when it first came out, since it didn't have a fleshed out RvR/PvP with a real purpose at first...Sure its a good game, or it wouldn't do so well...I can see though, where it is probably 50-70% of most peoples first big MMO.

UO and EQ were my top two favorites, so it wasn't as 'new' to me as a first timer I guess.

As mentioned WoW is definitely hard to replace since every other game is just replicating it.

I like The Witcher, it is hard to get into because the combat is a little different. Increase your mouse sensitivity and make sure you actually have your pointer icon on the enemy and its easy going and the game turns into fun. :p Thats how i felt anyways, mostly it was the controls weirding me out when i first played it.

I like Allods, its another game similar to WoW a bit more grindy i think.

DCUO is definitely a good change for people like me and some posters here that have played a game like WoW for 5+ years.

I also bored of CoH and CO quite easily but i had beta'd DCUO before trialing either of them.

WoW game with super hero theme: boring.

DCUO awesome action combat: hells yeah.
