What's up with the lack of hype about DCUO?

holdenhamletholdenhamlet Member EpicPosts: 3,772

This game is awesome and people are talking about Rift of Guild Wars 2 and those games aren't out yet.

DCUO is out NOW and it's really good!

What the heck, I remember way more hype surrounding Champions Online, STO and FFXIV and those games were all AWFUL.

We finally get a good MMORPG for the first time in years and where's the hoopla?

Most people seem pretty positive about DCUO so not many trolls around and so the fans do not need to tell everyone how great it is.

The hype for CO, STO and FFXIV was very negative but on most gaming sited when people talk about DCUO its almost always positive. Makes me want to try it... :p

Just a small thought from my side is that the combat just scares people.

Guild wars took a leap only giving people a small selection of skills ( forgive me if they where not the first mmo / online game to do so ) and on top of that speed was added.. Theres stunning, bigger stuns, blocking, and 3 different types of movement.

It's pretty damn hard coming from an ex WoW player who never really plays action games :|

Edit : having said that, It's just different from most mmo"Rpgs" with its combat, and doesn't attract the same audience.

The thing this game was advertised as the messiah of mmos. Imho, even for people attracted to actiony consolish games it has fallen a bit short. DCUO is a good game but by no means "the game".

SOE has heavily advertised(even on a football game)  so I am also surprised that it is not so hyped. The game has potential for a  niche market, mostly is love it or hate it. Therefore, it was expected the fair share of fanboys and haters in these forums.

Honestly when I saw the title, I was like where has the op been,  this game for the past 4 months has been hyped here and seen the staff has had several blogs.

I don't know where you been hiding but I don't know how you missed all the blogs from even the head guy on this site about dcuo.

I almost had to ask were you trying to be sarcastic?

If the game had released 6 months ago the hype would have been big but now the focus seems to be on Rift instead. Rift is releasing in 5 weeks and many people here have already tried it in beta events.

Fantasy games are just more popular than superhero games.

But it might actually be a blessing to not have a hype, people don't expect so much of the game and they might get a pleasant surprise instead of getting disappointed like they did with Champions.

GW2s hype is different and based on the fact that Arenanet are a very popular developer, SOE on the other hand have a kinda bad reputation since they NGEd SWG and introduced RMT shops in P2P games.

Sadly I agree. People are playing and not here discussing the game as much because they do not have to chime in and set the record straight against the "MMO X Sucks" crowd.

Negative stuff always gets hyped more.

DCUO is a fun, fun game that I am really enjoying. I have only two real issues with it.

    1) Chat is terrible and not enough social capability. This needs to be changed fast so grouping and talking is easier. I find myself virtually pounding on the enter key in frustration so I can simply say something to someone, even in a group I am in.

    2) Content: I reached level cap in beta but have been taking my time live so my highest character is in the mid 20s. I am hoping they quickly add content or the game will give me a few months of great fun at best. If they meet the monthly add of content, and that content is fairly hefty, I can see playing for a long time.

Outside of those two things the game rocks for me.

I bet the game is fairly decent by the way it looks from the videos but it just doesn't interest me. I have a lot more going for some other close releases such as Shogun 2: Total War, Dragon Age 2, World of Tanks etc. I know I would be playing DCUO for only the first month, so why waste my money on it? I'm still in the process of finishing of Dragon Age 1. After that, I have to get all the shinies from Guild Wars 1 to Guild Wars 2. I want my fellblade, goddamit!

Plenty of games to play other than DCUO. Gotta have my priorities...

Honestly, the game isn't that good. It's an MMO designed for consoles. It's fun for a couple of weeks, after that it's pretty boring.

This, pretty much.   It's not overly terrible, yet it's not really that great (as some may state, like the OP).  It's just middling, and thus there's no real discussion about it.

Maybe Smedley will learn from getting beat by a beta.

Timing counts for alot and Trion / Rift owns Q1 2011.

Or he will not and relaunch Planetside too close to Rifts actual launch.

I tried the beta and got excited about it for a week. Then my interest just vanished out of boredom. It's a solid game and a great take on the DC Universe. It just gives me that "Meh" feeling

It looks, feels, and plays like a console port. Nuff said.

Outside of those two things the game rocks for me.

Let me add another one to that, where's all the descriptions for the abilities. For example I went nature, and shapeshifting. There's not description on what the abilities for the different shapes really does, how much damage they do. I finally found out a way to see some names for the abilities on your hotbar by pressing F1 and scrolling down(which don't work some of the time).

The game seems good, I hit level cap within a week. And i'm thinking maybe that's a new thing that they want to try for now, an easy way to get max level(due to casuals I suppose), and then add more and more content/levels so that more ppl is coming along. I mean if someone were to start WoW now, without RaF. It'll be hell.

And as mentioned, the game is a port, and it shows, much harder than in CO. And there's alot of bugs with the PC version, sound dissapearing not to mention everyone talks ontop of eachother at times, if you say enter a solo dungeon, and talk to an NPC there, it'll be like the NPC talking, and your mentor(becuase of a quest update), and if you then click on some missions in your journal, it's bad.. And video settings not saving windowmode, or somehow resets it when the game starts and plays the first video.

The game has alot of abilities in the skill system, but where the hell should you put them all. I was like level 15 and had too many already. Moar action slots plox! And screw PS3 users that wants it "easy" or they can have two versions of the game, as they don't play with eachother anyway, so what's the point in having all the same stuff/UI/Chat?

But again, the game is new. And I tend to like the possibilities to make combos and the constant action in addition to the old "press 1 for fireball".

Agreed. OP, this is not the site to launch that complaint on. I think mmorpg made last week DC week with a new featured article every day.

This is at the core of it... DCUO is 'ok' for what it is, but there are just better games to play right now for a lot of people. DCUO dosent even register with me as a MMORPGer... if I wanted a action game there are better ones (imo) and although I love comics I don't get any thrill from the thought of being told what to do by superman :/

oh, and I won't ever support SOE again (have decided to not even go back to the EQ prog server) due to their double dip rev model.

This game is getting a lot of coverage in the mainstream though (yahoo, orange and others are hyping it) and will do really well I think. At least in the short term.

The only games that get any hype nowadays are absolute crap, the drama hype machine just can't be stopped. And f2p/b2p games because you just can't compete with the shere number of cheap ass bastards in this world always thinking they'll get something for nothing.

SOE by the title turns off many folks.  Nobody wants to buy a game to be hosed 6 months later.

Other reasons is that the game is, allegedly, designed for consoles in mind and the lack of MMORPG elements in the game (e.g. crafting, housing etc).

DCUO is quite a different experience from your standard MMO and not everybodys cup of tea because of that.

I wasnt even going to try it out, seeing i am not that into superheroes, especially not the DC ones, but a friend litteraly twisted my arm into getting the game. She just wouldnt stop talking about how much fun she had in the beta so i said, heck it is just 50$, i spend more on a decent dinner out so let's give it a shot.

And she was quite right- although i hate console style games- DCUO is just so damn fun. It is like a breath of fresh air i needed after realizing how horribly same-ish to all standard MMOs Rift was after one boring as heck beta weekend.

After 6 years in MMOs i needed a jolt from the staleness of the genre , and i guess DCUO was that for me.

But i dont expect everybody to feel the same and go into a mass frenzy about it and start hyping it to heavens. Time will show just how good of a game DCUO is and first two weeks of hype or no hype wont change that much.

Well OP it's like this, Hype and buzz pretty much surrounds yet to be launched titles as people are anticipating it's eventual arrival. When a game launches hype tends to be transfered to the next yet to be launched title. Right now it's on Rift because there hasn't been much new info about GW2 yet, as soon as there is though the hype will shift back to GW2 in an instant lol.

With all being quiet after a games launch it generally means people are busy playing it rather than coming to forums and such trying to bash it or defend it.

Wait a few a month or so and talk will start back up as people start to get bored. Happens with all MMO's.

Unless it's a game as bad as STO or FFXIV things just tend to go quiet after launch as people spend most of there time playing.

    Lack of hype ?.. maybe...

Still, it's the top voted game here right now...
