Well.... I certainly don't think we need the "poop factor" to increase the realism in our MMO's, but it'snot a bad idea to include a few bathrooms, or toilets & sinks in the game - just for the sake of common sense reality.    Everquest 2 crafters and house decorators have gotten real creative in designing reasonable facsimiles in the guild halls and in the houses.  Now Sony makes available for purchase a "Cherry Wood" sink, and a collection reward "clawfoot bathtub".

I think these are cute, innovative, and even reasonable additions to the landscape that increases the "realism" of the world.  We don't have to "go to the crapper" to recognize the importance of "having a crapper"!

two of my favorite subtle details in any MMOs...

bathroom doors in Anarchy Online that had the typical man and woman symbols except that they were holding guns.

bathroom doors available to place in super group bases in City of Heroes had 'men', 'women', and 'giant.' options.

"Never met a pack of humans that were any different. Look at the idiots that get elected every couple of years. You really consider those guys more mature than us? The only difference between us and them is, when they gank some noobs and take their stuff, the noobs actually die." - Madimorga

Well, if we add bathroom feature. We would have to add food, and water. And maybe sleep. And why does a pooh take 10 minutes. I mean it should be close to instant or maybe 30 seconds or so. If it was longer than a minute it would be just a burden and make the game not fun. I mean the idea is great, I would love an mmo that would include things like this. It would make me feel more immersed with the character, but waiting 10 minutes is a pretty long. Especially if crunched with time in the real world. I wouldn't like the idea of picking it up afterwards. I mean that's just gross and unnecessary.

I thought there were laws against child labor.  Obviously MMORPG.COM has hired a child to write for it.

Surely no adult would come up with this jr. high school drivel.

To paraphrase South Park here a little bit:

Sims already did it, Sims already did it.

Played: Asheron's Call(still the best fantasy MMO!), EQ1, EQ2, Vanguard, DAoC, Horizons, City of Heroes/Villians, WoW (crap), LOTORO, D&D Online, Eve, Anarchy Online, and still playing SWG daily.

ROFLMAO!  That is freaking hilarious, some of it at least.

Goodness, some of the comments too, "...new meaning to Darkfall."  Ha!

I can imagine such a feature being in Haven & Hearth (Sandboxers check it out, browser based, low graphics, awesome open world setting).

It reminds me of the more realistic aspects rarely present in games.  Does anyone remember the Fatigue system and need for sleeping in the first edition of Runescape?

Once you reached a certain Fatigue you became limited in actions and had to go sleep, plus when finally in bed you would actually have to write up one of those CAPTCHAs which meant this worked as bot-prevention.

Maybe crapping yourself isn't as fabulous a feature to add realism to a game but it sure is creative.  I think the Writer would do well in sandbox game design, there just needs to be some management and refining to his ideas.

Oh idea.  Body odour and it affecting others as a debuff would be very applicable as a feature.  Maybe not a result of making a mess in your magical robes but general overworking yourself.  You find that river, bathe a while and smell fresh - Gives some resistance to catching disease, recovers health, avoids leaving scent trails that those naturally smelly PKers would follow you by.

Hey Gamers, you live as various non-humans and otherwise magical humans or space ship controllers in a completely out of world setting, open your minds and chill.  How can anyone be such a tight-ass when their life is full of wonderment, or are you all so lost... Sadface!

I think it would be cool if you could gain level by the type of duty you take, like if you eat alot of meat your turd will be more concentrated and dense.  More veg would give a different effect. This would really give a cool twist on your diet in game. Pretty cool idea

World of the Simscraft? I shudder at the thought.

But MMOs are based on P&P games and books, and the only cases they mention people going to the crapper is when Cthulus cousin is waiting in there, or when a GI is going to wash the camel in the djungel and 2 VCs Alfa Bravos him. You know in any RPG game when the GM tells you yeu need a bathroom break that something bad is about to happen....

Besides, MMOs are supposed to only reflect the exiting part of adventuring. I don't really feel the need to wash my clothes, polish my sword and boots, take care of my mount and so on in a game.

Just polishing up one of my own friggin gauntlets take 4 hours and my sword a lot longer (without technical help but that is cheating. I don't need to do that or crap in a game.

I can buy that I need to eat and I even like the idea from that Finnish game where you need to light a fire sometimes to not freeze. Some realism to a game is fun. But there is a limit and this is past it.

Although the article does it with allot more humour and shock value, I could not agree more that biologiccal imperitives should be included in MMO games with the same seriousness as combat and commerce/crafting.

I have played several MMOs that had the food and/or water drink imperitives included and when they are done tastefully and propperly  (unlike some of the above suggestions) it actually adds a wonderfull amount of depth. I really sucks when it is done wrong or heavyhanddedly.

Freinds and I have been discussing this for almost a decade now, and if it is included in the base mechanics for the game from the start there is no reason why it should't work outside of a player just not liking it, like some don't like PvP and some don't like crafting.

    Um... no.

The immature already have enough of a run with whatever ammo they are given in the MMO's today.  If they are supplied with garbage like that... it would get very, very out of hand quickly.

    Just no.

    Wow....

This guy I think is out of ideas and should move on with his life...this is why newer games are fun...for only less then 30 days.

Quickly sumed...Just make an emote if he wants turns and crapping in a game for his own sick tastes...."Whats jimmy doing?" Says the guild leader. "Looks like he's taking a crap...he'll brb"

No need to make it Lessen the fun from a game. This is seriously a waste of time.

    An MMO Trail freak.

YOU see if there was a diet system you could gain xp for the type of duece you drop. Its also a good way to see if your cook is on top of his skills. If your dropping nothing but diarrea for days you might want to get you food goods elsewhere because your cook sucks. Also if  take one with mad corn in it , These are things that will get you caught by trackers or a pack of wolves. I think Turd isnt as bad of an idea as some people think

you would get goldsellers spelling out their websites with lumps of crap all over the towns.

People late to the game would get one shot by the diseases in the newbie starting zones where malicious people have been setting up grief areas of actual mounds of crap several months old infested with maggots, flies, larva.

How would tradeskills not be griefed?  Some dude is cooking up some raid quality food and then someone comes and takes a dump in his oven?  Try and do some fishing when theres a group of punks group crapping in your fishing spot

That being said..adding a photo of a real old woman with lame text is prolly not the best move to your thread...funny to some but offensive to others including that grannies family...

The subject has nothing to do with sandbox. Dont even bring the sandbox name.

Waste of time. Low quality article. It just brings this website another step down. How come they let him write articles?

Its so bad that I feel like bringing a cloud of negativity to the writer and the website.

I think if you where actually gonna do something like this make it so your character can do it while offline. I mean actually do it not pretend he does while he's really just dissapeared from the world, so when you log off your character goes around eats, sleeps, sharpens his sword's etc. getting themselves ready for when you return.

Why? cause the added realism some people would enjoy, and others would enjoy being able to go to a nice restaraunt with their character (it worked for the sims).

Even if you do all that however I'd be hesitant to add poop'ing, reading this article and the replies are a pretty good explanation of why.

I realize this wasn't a serious post, but I am going to make semi-serious commentary on it anyway. Sue me.

Since I am an EQ vet, where you had to carry food and drink but the consumption thereof was (mercifully) automated and invisible, I rather assumed that the other end of the process was the same, and I was really ok with that.

I don't want to have to sleep in game either. If I could avoid it IRL without consequences, I'd never sleep. Or go to the bathroom. Or eat. I have other stuff to do. I certainly don't want to manipulate my in-game puppet to do those things when I could be spending that time doing something productive like  smacking around goblins or sewing new coats.

i'm certain people would be going to bathroom if there was a buff to be gained

"Relieved: +5% to all your actions; 10 min duration; 1 hour cooldown"? :)

Sleeping in a game is out.

I could imagine that you had a body temperature meter that forces you to get in the shade or take a bath in certain hot zones and warm up by a fire or inside a tavern in cold zones. Not too often unless you swim in a cold river or something similar and your clothes and magical gear could impact it as well but chainmail bikini and arctic climate should force you to warm yourself at times.

Food should be handled in a different way. You should put up a stack that you can fastkey and between combat you eat to get health regen and drink to get mana regen. It works no matter if you have healing in the game or not, you can ignore it and really slowlyy self heal but it is better to get a bite between combat.
