Anything that is a Real Life belief will always consciously or subconsciously influence what you do in anything you do.
Anyone who says otherwise is either lying about their real life beliefs or can't acept what they are.
This is a strange topic because logically their is only one answer.
So do you believe in slaying hordes and hordes of grunts in real life? Or do you only play the non-combat element of games or slay only frogs and spiders (that still pretty evil).
To some degree. In any game where I'm given a choice, I usually play the good guy. Case in point, since I was playing it again recently, in Bioshock 2, whenever given a choice to harvest or save the little girls, I always saved. It had nothing to do with bonuses at the end, that's just the kind of person I am. I have no fun playing the bad guy so I just don't do it.
Surprized how many Yes votes there are, but for me my real life sort of ceases to exist for the majority of time I spend gaming lol, it's kind of the point of playing for me, a glorous escape to relieve stress, so I try to drag as little of RL into it as possible and just try to have some harmless fun :P
This is my 1st post so here goes! In RL i tend to make my own path, sometimes people follow me, sometimes they walk beside, and sometimes they lead because im not opposed to good advice. I have a strong sense of what i believe to be right and wrong, and a live & let live policy as long as it doesnt infringe on others not asking for your input! I tend to get my social interactions out of my gaming experiences as opposed to in the real world because people have a perchant for taking advantage of my kind nature and i have learned to insulate myself. If someone abuses that in a game there are effective ways of ignoring them.
As to the creation of a character i have many on 3 accounts in EQ but my main of 6 years is a Cleric. I lean towards caster classes, but have a couple melee i am getting quite effective with. Happy/sad, to me at least, its time for me to move on to a new game, Rift. EQ was an incredible experience, but the stuff I'm experiencing in this new environment is awsome, and there are a few threads on this very subject. I don't believe one faction is good and the other evil. I chose defiant because it more suited my RL personality and i want to have affinity with my character.
If I'm playing a necro, for instance, I will likely be more violent, greedy and just plain as evil as possible.
If I'm playing a paladin, I will go all out righteous.
For the generic characters (warriors, mages, etc.) I normally have something in mind for some sort of back story when I create them, normally based on their race.
Nice thread indeed! A breath of fresh air around here.
It depends a lot on are we talking about interactions with NPC or players, and roleplaying or being your "real life self". If I'm being myself and interacting with other players, I never takes sides, try to be fair, don't kill weaker players, and even though the pixel items doen't really mean one bit, people want them more or less, so ninjaing items is basically the same as stealing in real life. It happening in virtual world, partly anonymously doesn't change anything, it's just a better test of your morality.
If it's roleplaying in question, I usually let my personality come through quite a lot no matter what character I am roleplaying, but a lot of time I also do something completely different. I might believe in a docmatic religion, I might be a woman, I might be sarcastic a-hole, I might support slavery and other cruelties. Same ethics are mostly still in effect, but I take certain freedoms when roleplaying.
Then there's EVE, where I don't roleplay, but still am greedy bastard and forget all morality. Well, not quite, but for example I can steal stuff and sometimes kill weaker players. EVE is different though, everyone (most anyway) agrees, that it is how you can (should even) behave in EVE. As long as there's common understanding and agreement between players, things work, no matter if it's carebearing or killing eachother.
Interaction with NPC I do quite morally as well. I don't enjoy brainlessly killing wildlife at all, which is very popular theme in games. If there's options given, I most often choose the "good" path, and replay through the "evil" path later on just to see the content. Very often though, the evil side is only superficially evil, as in they ave dark clothing and fearsome appearance, but in reality there's just two equal sides trying to get the otherside killed, driven away or whatever. So in those cases I just choose the visually more appealing, which is usually the "evil". But if there's "neutral" side available, that the one I always take, and that mirrors my real-life personality quite well, as I'm always the sideless, non-opionated one.
To a small degree, maybe. I am not absolutely in favor of welfare, entitlements and socialism, which I find more elements of in themepark mmo's. But I do find more elements of capitalism in sandboxy games, which is why I might lean toward favoring those types of games more often.
Religion is retarded. As I see religion for what it is, retard disease, I have no moral or religious issues with gaming. THat doesnt mean I am an asshole. I dont behave like a jerk, KSing or stealing loot. I also do not kill animals in game that are not red to me. I never understood how people would just walk up and kill that cow or whatever for no reason. I always found it odd, sorta serial killer odd.

Yes, my real life beliefs and ethics strongly dictate my in game behavior, therefore I tend to assume (probably incorrectly) that the same applies to everyone else.
I have a hard time believing that someone who plays a ganking ass-hat in an MMORPG isn't a jerk in real life. Sure, they may keep their behavior in check due to RL consequences for their actions, but some players I've met in game are so sociopathic I can't believe they are RL serial killers or something.

Well myself yes, but sometimes its fun to play the bad guy..
but having said that I agree whether you play good or bad, ppl who are dicks in game and gank level 1's and ninja and stuff are probably the same way in real life. I mean why else would you ruin peoples gameplay.
I have a really hard time role-playing. I always find an excuse to talk about my real life, because it effects how much I am going to play MMORPGs. If I have a lot of free time, then I tend to become a hard-core player, but if I have very little time in real life it is going to reflect that in the game. Or sometimes I just don't want to play as much no matter how much free time I am, like now, so I become more of a casual player. So does my RL belief (or ethics) influence my gameplay? Definitely! I can't play someone who I wouldn't be comfortable playing as, whether that is my morality, my seriousness (and sometimes humor), or my style of play. But that doesn't stop me from trying to be someone else, as I never play as a human in a MMORPG unless I'm forced to. Then again, it is my RL belief that you probably shouldn't play as a human, or at least someone who looks identical to you in every way in a MMO because I think there needs to be some kind of role-playing intact, even if it is completely depthless.
Religion is retarded. As I see religion for what it is, retard disease, I have no moral or religious issues with gaming. THat doesnt mean I am an asshole. Religion is not logical no. But the main thing to not be a jerk is respecting other people even if you think their ideas are somewhat silly.
As for animals, they are often collateral damage. Do you think my evil wizard would care if there is a cow close to the goblin? Of course he is lazy as well so he wont waste a good fireball on a cow unless hes had a really bad day and needs a beef.
I wouldn't call it seriel killer odd to kill animals randomly, rather cowardly evil RPGing and that is fine if you play that kind of character (evil cowards could probably be somewhat amusing to play). It is when palladins start to do it you should worry about psychotic behavior.

Just don't then. RPing is not something everyone enjoy, just avoid RPG servers and RPG guilds.
It is rather annoying with people who hate RPing that plays on RPG servers, it is a question about respect, like I respect that you don't RPG (unless you are on a dedicated RPG server).
Some people kvasi RPG, others can't stand it at all and it is up to everyone to find the playstyle they prefer. The key to happiness is finding out what you like and do it.
The King is a fair and just ruler of men in real life. So in the pretend virtual worlds I usually take such a role and lead fortunate to follow me men and women to ultimate and complete victory.
There are times when I have to act swiftly; whether to reward a noble deed or put right a foolish act. Like all great rulers I carry personal responsibility for those in my ward and therefore expect each of my loyal subjects to behave just a benevolent as their fearless leader would in all actions they take during their occupation of the 01101010 realm.

Read what I said .... you may do whatever the game requires but to an extent it will influence in the back of your mind.
